Support for an Upgrade and issues with Hard drive full.

I am on 10.6 Snow leopard and I need to get migrated into something later so I can take on better technology such as the ICLOUD and maybe get more productive. I am out of space on hard drive also and I have an older MAC. What can I do to keep going and maybe get upgraded and also not loose data. ? any suggestions, The Maverick upgrade says my older mac is not compatible.
Thanks
Steven Moore PS

I would be 'careful' and cautious with WD MyBooks anyway, but FW800 can be a great external off line backup.
What I would do is split two 1TB drives:
Drive A: OS and apps, 2nd partition for backup of Drive B which has all your media and data files.
Drive B: most all of your documents, video, music, photo, etc. which gets backed up to the 2nd half of boot drive.
Also, leave room for a backup of Drive A's OS and applications and for repairs and such like Disk Warrior.
It makes a "criss-cross." Great for dual drive setup.
I'd put your 250GB drive in FW case for backup also running Disk Warrior maintenance.

  • Will time capsule support Airportextreme 802.11ac and an external hard drive on my iMac (late 2011) with Yosemite?

I want to set up a new Airport extreme 802.11ac with an external drive as a wireless back up for time capsule. I have an iMac (late 2011) running Yosemite. Will this work, and if so, what are the recommended external hard drives that work the best.
The rationale for not buying a time capsule is that I have had 2 hard drive failures and replacements on both my iMacs and I am afraid if the time capsule drive fails, it will be yet another apple hard drive that has failed on me. I currently back up on G drive external drives.

Apple does not make hard drives. They may be using the same drive that's in your G-Drives.
You can backup to an external drive connected to the newest AEBS via USB.

  • Palm Zire 31 sat idle for too long and then my hard drive crashed - I have recovered my palmOne files from the hard drive but don't know how to install to desktop?

Since this product is no longer supported by the manufacturer, I hope that someone out there will be able to help me find a way to get my calendar and contacts restored to the desktop.  My handheld sat unused for a very long time, but my desktop calendar and contacts were current up until my hard drive crashed.  I was able to recover the PalmOne files from the crashed hard drive but all I can see are *.dat files.  When I try to import or restore, the *.dat is not a supported file extension.  HELP!  I have the original installation CD. Thank you

.dat are the actual working files Palm Desktop is looking for - you can't import them.
Just create a user in Palm Desktop and copy the .dat files (that have more than 1k of data) over the existing address.dat and datebook.dat (or calendar.dat, I forget which existed on your device).

  • Odd issue with hard drive renaming itself on reboot.

I have an odd problem I have no idea what is causing it. I have a mac pro and I have multiple hard drives internally and i also have two esata hard raid drives connected to the extra esata ports using the cable extender. Anyways, one of those drives renames itself on reboot, causing all kinds of problems when i then try to access files on it. For example, if I had a program that had its files stored there it wouldn't be able to find them when it went looking because the volume all of a sudden is "missing" but what happens is it will attach a 1 to the end of its name. Then when I reboot, it will remove the 1. On next reboot, it will repeat and so on. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

My guess is that there is something wrong with the connection between the computer and the drive. The commonest cause is backup software that is in the middle of backing up something when the connection to the backup drive is dropped, so that the backup software creates an actual folder inside the /Volumes folder with the name of the drive and does its backup to this folder. The result is that the next time the drive mounts it gets the "DriveName 1" designation, and a bunch of space on your startup drive has mysteriously disappeared. So I think what is happening is that you are intermittently losing the drive. Whether the problem is the cable, the connectors, or the drive itself, you could try experimenting to find out. Try swapping the cable for another, and if that doesn't work try plugging the cable into a different connector on the computer, and so on.

  • Issues with Hard Drive & Disk Repair

I keep getting the following when I try to verify my hard drive with the Disk Utility:
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
It won't let me go on to repair the disk and I can't find my Install/Restore disc anywhere. Is there a simple step-by-step way of fixing this?
    Many Thanks
    BH

    Ben
Something to try if you can't find your Install disc is a Safe Boot: see Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode and Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?. You should be aware that because of the disk checking, Safe Boot Takes Longer Than Normal Startup.
Safe Boot will run a full disk check, and re-run if it finds anything to repair. If it completes the booting process, it will have repaired your disk.
If your machine halts during Safe Boot, you have something seriously wrong with your disk: Mac OS X 10.4: Computer shuts down during Safe Boot.
If the latter happens, remember this quote from the Disk Utility screen:
    • If Disk Utility cannot make repairs, try other disk repair programs or back up your data and erase the volume. One popular Repair Program is DiskWarrior.

  • Issue with hard drive

Alright, I have a folder with an exclamation. Yipee, ya know. So I put it into disk mode, and plug it in hoping it will finally dock with the computer. nope. In the usb under system management it says its there as a mass storage device but it wont load up the volume, wont give me anything under Itunes, my computer or any of that... I cant get into diagnostic mode either. So any ideas?

I strongly suggest that you should find a Mac :-
Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
From my experience - It is closed to 90% of chance that a problem of Folder with exclamation mark can be solved
Tip - Try to do several attempts - Go to an apple shop if you cant find any friend using Mac computer

  • Constant issues with hard drive, overheating in a new MacBook

I purchased a MacBook Pro 13" less then 4 months ago. I have also recently visited the Genius Bar due to overheating/battery issues of which they ran their tests and told me everything was fine. Since then I have had constant freezes (not due to heat), which are a regular occurrence (in the past there had been a few separate occasions where the log in screen froze but no serious issue). My computer is repeatedly freezing on the log in screen as well as when I'm on Facebook. It will often freeze several times in the space of an hour when the only thing running is Facebook on google chrome (that is what is running while on standby as well). The only solution has been to turn the computer forcibly off. However, this issue has progressed to the point where I am no longer able to long onto my computer due to an inability to accept my password. In an attempt to fix this I shut off my computer to find a folder with a question mark of which I can not progress past.
I am extremely frustrated as I just spent a lot of money purchasing this computer and that everyone at the Genius Bar, while helpful, have been unable to actually find an issue. If anyone can help that would be extremely helpful.

the folder with ? mark is a sign the system can't find a bootable OS to start the system. Or it is because the drive has failed.
Boot to the Recovery HD, hold down the Command+r keys at startup, and use Disk Utilityu to verify disk and repair the disk if needed. If that fails then it is time to take it back to the genius bar for a checkup.

  • Issue with hard drive showing up in Finder/Desktop

I have a Fantom Drive 1Tb that is hooked up through firewire 800. The unit used to mount fine, but all of a sudden it stopped showing up in the finder and on the desktop. I can find it through a spotlight search of items on it, and it shows up in disk utility without a problem. It is formatted Mac OS Extended. When I locate it through finder, it shows up in finder via column view, but is greyed out. the instant i close all finder windows, I have to go through and search again. I clicked "get info" and unlocked it, and ignored ownership, but it doesn't matter, i cannot get it to show up and stay in finder or anything.
    This is driving me nuts

normally you'd have to put quotation marks in both commands. They are needed to interpret special characters and spaces in drive name correctly. However, since your drive doesn't have any of those in its name you can actually dispense with quotation marks and simply use
    sudo xattr -d com.apple.metadata:kMDItemFinderComment /volumes/music
    and
    sudo chflags nohidden /volumes/music

I have a tesco router and an external hard drive attached to it as a network drive (shared) for my macbook and MB-Air. Have no problems with my MB accessing it, but with MB-AIR it says -  'the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. pls contact your system administrator to resolve the problem'. MB-Air uses maverick downloaded yesterday - upgrade from mountain lion. MB uses snow leopard still, as i am quite used to it and am thinking of upgrade if mavericks work fine on air. Also have parallel on snow leopard but it is no longer supported according to mac website - if i upgrade am i going to lose my parallel and will have to buy a new one!!!

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

i am using for first time the time machine and an external hard drive because I want to erase my macbook and start from zero files. Am i keeping my files in the portable hard disk when I will connect it again with the macbook or the time machine will erase all?
I would like to know if after I erase all my data, empy hard drive inside the macbook, the time machine will erase all my files that I have saved in my "WD "My passport" external hard drive

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine has to erase the external disk in order to make backups. Before setting Time Machine up, copy the files of your external disk to the hard disk of the Mac in order not to lose them, and then, set up Time Machine. The first backup will start automatically.
If you want more information about Time Machine, read the Pondini's site > http://pondini.org

  • Can anybody explain what is support for ADF Project and to solve the Issues

    Hi,
I am new to ADF and i am currently associated to ADF Support Project.
Can anybody explain what is support for ADF Project and to solve the Issues when the ADF Project is in Live.
we are getting the Tickets for the Issues.
    Thanks in advance.

    I agree with Timo.
It depends on the size of the project, user base, technologies, etc. We use lot of technologies in fusion middleware stack. We get tickets in many areas.
In your case, it could be anything like user training issues (user may not know how to use the some system features), browser issues like blank screen, bugs in code like JBO errors (failed to validate, another user has changed row, failed to lock the record, NullPointerException, IllegalArgumentException etc), business logic issues, page may not render properly, performance issues, partial commit issues, application server issues, authentication issues. If you use web services you might get web services related problems.

Snow Leopard is a Mac OS X version. You say that it's the version you have in your Mac (10.6.8). Do a back up of your files, format the hard drive (using Disk Utility) and reinstall again

    Hi Bob,
Yes, this info got burried.  Basically, it's a tool for building LabVIEW-based software products.  It is highly flexible/extensible and tries to fill the holes left by LabVIEW's built-in Application Builder.  Here are some good links to more info:

  • Where is the support for system upgrade malfunctions?  I lost PDF options

and I am getting no resolution to the issue. My computer was fine before the most recent upgrade. I even tried to download the 10.5.7 combo upgrade several times after it was suggested. The download not only took forever but I had to restart it several times after it timed out. Once it finally completed and I installed it, I still am having the same problems including no PDF print options and my Pages keeps quitting.
What is going on? MY COMPUTER AND ALL ITS SOFTWARE WAS FINE before the most recent upgrades.

What is going on? MY COMPUTER AND ALL ITS SOFTWARE WAS FINE before the most recent upgrades.
This might not actually have been the case. One of the top reasons for an upgrade failing is for there to be some kind of subtle underlying problems that the user might not yet have been aware of. For that reason, it is strongly recommended that you repair the boot drive and repair permissions before every system update.
The other likely possibility with 10.5.7 is bad RAM, as it seems to be picky about that. However, bad RAM would not show up as a lack of PDF print options or a single app crashing, so that makes it unlikely in my eyes.
Also, *never ever* restart your computer in the middle of an update, unless you are reasonably sure that it has really, truly frozen. If such a thing does happen, you should download the combo updater rather than using Software Update and try that. Of course, if you have installed the update without doing the preemptive diagnostics, you should go and repair the hard drive before trying to update again.
