Suppress Finder's "Cant Find Network Volume" Message @ Login Time

I manage 200 Mac desktops and laptops - all running Leopard. I manage the Macs with Open Directory via MCX policies using Workgroup Manager. One of the main things I manage for my users is Login Items. For example, various SMB network volumes get mounted at login time. When a Mac user is on the LAN and able to access the domain and file servers, the SMB volumes get mounted "automatically" via MCX computer and group policies. The mounts are mounted in /Volumes and appear on the user's Desktop. This is great for desktop users with static Ethernet connections, but for laptop user this poses a major problem which could easily be "fixed' by Apple. Let me explain:
When mobile users (laptop users) are off the LAN (i.e.; they are on the road, working from home, etc) the Mac attempts to find the SMB network volumes that are read part of the locally cached MCX policies when the user(s) log in. Of course, since the user isn't on the LAN (or connected via VPN,etc) Finder throws a generic error "The network volume could not be found"). This message is easily dismissed,and isnt a big deal if it only pops up once, but my users have SEVERAL SMB mounts configured as login items, and thus my users get prompted with the aforementioned Finder error messages several times. Each message stacks up top of the other as each connection attempt times out. Ouch! This has become the #1 complaint my Mac users have and it has reached the ears of senior IT managers and directors. Keep in mind most of my laptop users travel the planet on lecture tours and are on the road for weeks at a time, and thus they deal with the Finder messages several times a day for weeks on end (and sometimes in front of an audience if the said laptop is connected to a projector for a Keynote/PowerPoint presentation etc). The message provides no useful info. My users are savvy enough to know the auto-mounted network shares aren't available - they dont need "help" from Finder.app. They want to log in and get to work, and not be bothered by the barrage of redundant errors from Finder for 10 minutes!
I have attempted to design an AppleScript that could "intercept" the Finder messages and dismiss them automatically, but it hasnt worked thus far. I have also researched autofs and other Apple technologies to figure out a way to avoid these errors. No luck.
Request:
I would like to request a way to set the preference to have these messages ignored/bypassed or disabled. A simple check box to avoid these messages is all I want.
I submitted a bug report to Apple requesting a "fix" (ticket 6172962).

Two suggestions. 1) post AppleScript queries to its forum under OS X Technologies. 2) post server queries to the appropriate server forum.

  • Why don't network volume mounts (login items) configured in Profile Manager show up

    Using Lion server and Lion clients.  Bound both the server and client to Active Directory and successfully got Profile Manager up and running.  All I really need from Profile Manager is the ability to mount network volumes so when the user logs in it mounts their home directory.  Please note we do not specify any home directory paths in AD.  I can login with my AD accounts on the Lion client and get other Profile Manager settings to work, however when I try and mount a network volume via login items nothing happens.  I am using SMB for this.  If I try to manually connect to the same path via Go -> Connect To Server it works fine.  For a simple test I even created a folder on one of my Windows servers D drive and shared it and within profile manager configured it as SMB://server/share and still nothing.  I tried setting it in the Dock section as well which I read in another post somewhere but all I get is a question mark.  I have tried all variations of server name, FQDN, ip address, etc.  I know it's not permissions since it works when I try it manually so am really at a loss here.  Is there any way to log what happens at login to see if it's even trying to mount the volume?  I do know the client is getting the profile since i can see it in system preferences but it never works.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

  • Find tool cant find photos

    I am trialing Lightroom 1.2 from Win XP Pro with all updates applied. If this matters, I have done both manual Metadata writes and auto-writes to my images. I am having a problem with the "Find" feature. Basically it can't reliably and consistently find anything. Specifically, if I give my photos numerical titles like 01234001, 01234002, 01234003, etc then try to find them by going to FIND, clicking the TEXT checkbox, selecting TITLE, then selecting RULE contains, contains all, or starts with, then type in my search criteria (lets say 012340001), I might get no results or sometimes the single picture with that title. If I search for 01234, I may get no results or usually only one or 2 results even if there are dozens of pictures that have a title beginning with 01234. I get similar odd behavior if I search using ANYWHERE rather than TITLE as my criteria, including finding photos that don't have 01234 anywhere in any Metadata (or at least none that I could find).
    Anyone else having this issue? Any solutions?

    So do I. When you have a stack of paper, and you want to search through that stack, what's the first step? You have to spread it out, "expand the stack" so to speak.
    This makes sense to me intuitively. When you have a stack of prints on your desk, you can't see, search, or modify anything but the top one. The only thing the stack does all together is to move around (grab the stack, put it where you want it).
    Let's consider some possibilities.
    When you click a stack, and use the panel to add a keyword, should that keyword be applied to all images in the stack? I'd say no, but my observation of those around here indicates most would say yes.
    When you click a stack, and use the metadata panel to change the filename, should all the images in the stack change to that filename? Again, I'd say no. You?
    When you click a stack, and use the toolbar to change the rating, should all the images in the stack change to that rating? I'd say no, on the assumption you've stacked similar images with the best on top. You?
    Let's say you've stacked similar images with the best on top, then gone through and rated your stacks. When you want to check to make sure you've rated all images you ask the filters to show you all un-rated images. Should the images beneath the rated images in the top of the stack show up? Again, I'd say no.
    Last one. Lets say you get all your your stacks rated and you choose the best ones. You rename the top images to 001-132. If you select find and search within that folder for "076" in the file name. Should it find the stack with 076 on top? Of course - it's visible. Should it also find IMG_2076 inside one of the stacks?

    I'm on osx 10.7.2 and once I click the soundtrack pro icon I get an error message. I had problems with logic pro & my digi002r soundcard midi drivers but now is fixed (using a midi adapter).

  • All Network Volumes set as Login Items open in Finder on EVERY startup

    ...after updating to 10.5.8
    I have a Mac running on an otherwise all PC network. Before updating to 10.5.8 I had 5 network volumes set to "connect" on startup automatically (System Prefs / Accounts / Login Items). This worked perfectly and connected to these volumes silently without me having to ever worry about it. I didn't even have to check the "Hide" boxes.
    After updating to 10.5.8 however, it became completely annoying. Now it still connects to these volumes, but opens up every single one in Finder upon every startup. That's 5 windows I have to close every time I startup my computer. It may not sound like the worst thing in the world, but mind you I have to log out and back in every day for work. Even checking the "Hide" checkboxes don't do anything.
    Anybody experiencing the same problem? Anybody know a workaround or fix? My company has a rather large and complex network so staying connected to certain folders that I use is a must. Thanks.

    One of the possible workarounds posted there was to use a third-party program that I found difficult to understand and use. Instead I took V.K.'s advice and made an AppleScript and then made that script launch at login. Works like a charm.

    Then I made a script and saved it as an application. I then put that application in my Login Items (System Prefs / Accounts / Login Items).
    If you're having trouble finding the mount volume (or server) address, here's how you can find it: If you are currently connected to the volume(s) that you want to use, left-click it and hit Cmd+I (or right-click, Get Info). Use the address next to "Server:" - That's it!
    Hopefully Apple will fix this bug soon so people don't have to make AppleScripts just to make the OS work correctly.
    I wouldn't bet on it for leopard. leopard development has stopped now after snow leopard has been released. historically, Apple only releases security patches for old OS versions once a new one comes out. Interestingly, this bug is present in snow leopard too! or maybe they don't consider it a bug and this is how it should work. one can make a case for this, I guess.

    I have been having a similar problem for the last few days.Without warning the signal will just completely duck out leaving the device searching for several minutes before settling on a no signal message.
    Sometimes restarting the device, toggling data and 3g settings or toggling Airplane Mode will set things right. However, a lot of the time I've been left without a working phone.
    I don't believe this is a SIM issue, as I had to change my SIM only one month ago for another signal related problem. Again any help would be appreciated here as well.

    Yesterday I install You App AIO Remote on Windows Phone 8. I have connected to wifi HP 7150 aio printer, but phone cant find this printer... I have Lumia 1520 and Lumia 920 smartphones both is connect to this same wifi network like printer, but You app on both Lumias cant find printer, again but no problem is to connect to printer WEB interface from this both Lumias, so wifi network is correct configured.
    I have two tablet more in this same wifi network, both with windows 8.1 x64 systems, on this, You Windows 8 modern App AIO Remote find this same printer without problem...
    So what is wrong ? printer config ? eprint is on, ipp is on, bonjur is on, ip is static.
    Please help Me becease I wait for this app and now i cant use them

    Welcome to the HP Support Forums.  I understand that you are trying to use the new HP AiO Remote app for Windows phones to print to your Photosmart 7150 printer.
    The Photosmart 7150 printer only supports USB connectivity, I have include the Photosmart 7150 Printer Specifications for reference.  To be able to use the HP AiO Remote app the printer needs to be connected to a wireless network. 
    If you accidentally typed the incorrect printer model, please let me know which make/model/product number of HP printer that you have. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?

  • Problem with JDK 6 update 5 - Error Message says cant find java compiler

    Hi i am a complete beginner to programming and i am having trouble with the latest java development kit. jdk 6 update 5.
    The problem is i have set the path and the program cant find my compiler.
    I have installed the latest java development kit 6 update 5 on my windows xp machine.
    I have created a simple program as shown below:
    class Hello
         public static void main(String[] args)
                   System.out.println("Hello from java");
    saved the file to my desktop as Hello.java
    I have set the path variable like so:
    Go to control panel then click system icon then click advanced tab then click environmental variables.
    Now in system variables the path is shown as this - %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_05\bin;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn\
    I then add this to the end;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_05\bin
    This is the location to the things like compiler, applet viewer etc.
    No in the command prompt i type javac Hello.java and i get this error message:
    C:\> javac Hello.java
    javac: file not found: Hello.java
    Usage: javac <options> <source files>
    use -help for a list of possible options
    The jdk is installed properly im sure but it can find my compiler.
    What mistake have i made in setting the path because im guessing that is related to the problem?

    The jdk is installed properly im sure but it can find my compiler.Of course it can! It just can't find the file you are trying to compile, because that's not in the root directory.
    I suggest you make a directory C:\java and save your source file there rather than on the desktop. In the command prompt, enter cd \java to make it the current working directory and then enter javac Hello.java.
    @Pravin: The question is about compiling, not running. CLASSPATH has nothing to do with this problem.

    If Join was on then your home wi-fi must be set to Non-Broadcast.  If you did not set this up (maybe your provider did) then you will need to find the Network Name they used, and any password they used.  The SSID is Security Set ID and to see more try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSID .  Basically it is the name used to identify your router/network.  A lot of times the installer will leave it set as LinkSys, or Broadcom or whatever the manufacturer set it as for default.  Your best bet is to get whoever installed it to walk you through how they set it up, giving you id's and passwords so you can get in.  HOWEVER, if you are not comfortable with this (if you set security wrong, etc.) you would be well ahead of the game to hire a local computer tech (networking) to get this working for you.  You can also contact the vendor of your router and get help (if it is still in warranty), or at least get copies of the manuals as pdf files.  Sorry I can't give you more help, I hope this gives you an idea where to go from here to find more.

    It should keep asking for the password, because it's trying to check for purchases... As soon as you login, it will see you have pending downloads and create the downloads section on the left below Purchases under the Store section. Then it will start the music downloads there, as they will be listed one below the other.
    You could just try to check your account balance or view your account and that will trigger a password request too. You can just click on that and say that now iTunes keeps asking for the password and ask him to help you with that. Trick would be to interrupt him so that he carries on with another task after, so he doesn't notice the download. Or you carry on with email or browsing which you were "busy" with when iTunes interrupted you for the password (stupid iTunes)

  • Cant find instant message on my mac book pro

    im running snowleopard on my mac book pro and i cant acess or find my instant messaging, no icon, and cant find it in finder or anywhere??? i bought it in 2011, its actually my sisters, my 2009 MBP works fine, any answers out there?

    In answer to your second question, it wouldn't matter much on your sister's MBP, as Snow Leopard doesn't support iCloud for messaging (or for much of anything, though you can force a few things). Her iChat is limited to AIM instant messaging and such.
    On your MBP, which according to your profile is running Lion (10.7.5), you also won't have access to iCloud messaging (iMessage) unless you installed the beta-test iMessages application and somehow kept it running. (I have heard it can no longer be installed and may no longer work at all. That's third-hand; I haven't tried it.) Your iChat will also be limited to AIM and such.
    For those with iMessage-capable phones and computers, there is a choice to be made. Apple's apparent concept for iCloud would suggest that you would use a single iCloud account for all of the devices you individually own or use. (I do that; my wife does also, with her own ID.) That model works well when, for example, you want to receive all the same iMessages on all of your devices. Even if you don't, there are ways to keep them separate (e.g., use the phone number to send/receive iMessages on your iPhone while using an email address on the MBP).

    We use a java application to manage advertising.
    This application must reach a smb network volume to access to
    the files. On the other hand we do not want that the users can access to
    this network volume (to see this network volume on the finder).
    It is possible to hide a network volume on the finder.

    Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop and uncheck the 'Connected Servers' option.
    Alternatively, if you want to leave other servers showing, you can manually mount the volume at any other point, bypassing the /Volumes directory:
    mount smb://server/sharename /some/other/mount
    This should mount the share at the path /some/other/mount rather than at the default /Volumes/sharename

  • Blackberry 8900 says 1 message but cant find it.

    Yes i know this is a repeat of another post. but the other one doesnt answer my problem and i still cant find out where the hell the message is.
    I have tried searching for the message in question but i cant seem to find it using the search option or entering different folders.
    it happened after i linked my email to the phone but its not in my email inbox or junk.
    any help appreciated... thanks.

    It's unfortunate you didn't provide us a link to the other post you tried the instructions from...makes it a bit difficult for us to avoid redundant information. But, since that is the case...here's what I have to offer...
    Homescreen > Messages > > Search
    Set as follows (may vary depending on your device OS level):
    Search Type: Local
    Name In: Any Address Field
    Subject Message: <leave blank>
    Include Encrypted Messages: Yes
    Service: All Services
    Folder: All Folders
    Show: Unopened Only
    Type: All
    That should return to you all unopened messages from all message conduits.
    Also try making sent and filed messages visible...it could also be one of those.

    Line6 POD Farm
    McDSP plug-ins (some software purchases include a green iLok key)
    MOTU
    Overloud
    Pro Tools
    Serato
    Virtually all Digidesign (RTAS and TDM) plug-ins
    Virtually all Waves Products
    So if you have any of there, they might be the cause of your problems.
