Svchost.exe -k netsvcs constantly downloading

I was asked to move this here from Microsoft Answers.
I am working on an XP Home SP3 computer that constantly downloads using system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs. It will download as long as the computer is connected. Before I realized the problem, it downloaded 1.4GB. I am using Netbalancer to watch the process.
Things I've tried:
>Turn off windows auto updates. The computer was up to date last week.
>Scan with Malwarebytes, Security Essentials, MFRT, AVG, TDDSkiller in windows and safe mode when possible. Avg found 6 corrupted google toolbar.exe in Temp files. Others found nothing.
>Turn off system restore and rescan with AVG while the computer was connected.
>The computer has always had Norton antivirus installed. It found and removed 1 virus in setup_lib_srf[1].exe which contained "Downloader" in 2009.
>Disabled Backgound Intelligent Transfer service but netsvcs still downloads and the BITS service goes back to Automatic after a reboot.
>Ran svchost.exe fix from Microsoft which is for high cpu use but thought it might help.
> The remote ip address netsvcs is contacting belongs to Akamai Technologies when windows auto update is turned off. With auto updates on the other ip addresses belong to Microsoft.
I ran Hijackthis if you want the log.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply and help. I haven't looked for specific dll's yet but process explorer found "Mutant" files in every instance of svchost including this: Mutant    \BaseNamedObjects\SHIMLIB_LOG_MUTEX.... along with a few or several other
mutants. I hope it's ok to post the saved file from one of the svchost instances because it has obvious concerns.
I need to know if: 1.Deleting the Temp files and Temporary Internet files along with .dat files and cookies listed in the file could clean the system. 2.Is the system to compromised to try to save. It will be interesting to try though.
Thanks, Tom

  • Svchost.exe k netsvcs

I am having the same svchost type problem others have had. Within a minute of booting up an svchost.exe will start running, using up my whole CPU...so I can't do anything with my computer. The only way to proceed is to go into Task Manager and stop the process.
If I do that all is fine except that I can't get any sound on any video, etc (system sounds still work).
I've tried to use Process Explorer to figure it out...but I can't get far with it. The svchost.exe function (k netsvcs) that's causing the problem has a long list of at least a dozen functions. I'm not a software professional, just an old guy trying to use
his Win XP Svc Pack 3 computer that otherwise works great. That notwithstanding, I'm often able to figure out the solution to problems, but this one has me stumped!
I've done a full Norton scan, and also tried a couple of suggested malware products, non of which find any threats. My windows update service is set to notify me of updates...not to update automatically. I don't seem to be getting any notifications anymore.
    :<((
I need help, please, to solve this problem.

    Bob,
A Christmas miracle. Today it worked. I checked the box for automatic installation of upgrades, rebooted, and what was soon awaiting on my desktop but some downloads waiting to be installed. Puzzling: for some reason the system isn't recognizing how the
boxes are checked. In any event, I don't know it it was that or the steps I went thru yesterday from Ehow, but it worked. I had earlier today confirmed thru Process Explorer that it was in fact the automatic update service that was causing the problem. Whatever...I'm
happy, and thanks for your help!

  • Svchost.exe with "Dhcp, eventlog, lmhosts" services is generating thousands of page faults and I/O reads per second?

On one of our Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise (SP1) servers, we're noticing a strange phenomenon.....that the svchost.exe that hosts "Dhcp, eventlog, lmhosts" is constantly generating page faults....a few thousand per second, accumulating to billions of total
page faults.  I/O reads and I/O other are also rising every second.  Cpu is consistently 2%, and memory is constant. (~40M).
I'm guessing that it's the eventlog service because our HP openview log reader (opcle.exe) is also working hard to keep up.  I've searched for others posting a similar problem but am coming up empty handed.
This is a MS Analysis Services 2008 server, but we haven't noticed any problems coming from SSAS.  We have other file sharing-related jobs that interact with this server, that sometimes take 30 min and sometimes 6 hours, for the same workload....and
we're thinking that the 6 hour runs are somehow related to this process's unusual page faults.
Anyone else seen this eventlog strange behavior?
    Thanks
    -Mark

    Hi,
The best thing would be downloading the Process Explorer and analyzing the problem.

  • How to stop svchost.exe to connect to internet?

I used a software known as TCPview. I used it to monitor what are the services that are connected to the internet. In this I found out that svchost.exe is always downloading something. It is not the automatic windows update since I changed the windows
update to manual. So please help me since my internet speed is very slow & in that svchost.exe is always downloading something....

On a newly setup system svchost.exe is the process that runs a lot of services. This means that some service may be downloading something that is important to it. Or it may always be a different service.
The resmon.exe can tell you more about which service is downloading stuff. Under network you can look for the PID of the svchost.exe that is downloading and then go to the services tab in the task manager. There you look for the PID again and hopefully find
a useful description that let's you decide what to do.
On the other hand svchost.exe is a very loved name by some shady programmers looking for new bots for their networks or for some useful login or credit card data. Meaning is all of your software and especially your windows up to date and have you an always
watching and updated anti virus software installed? Even if so a virus might be something to consider

  • Windows Server 2008 X64 - gpupdate takes 10min - svchost.exe (gpsvc) pid logs 8.5 million events in procmon

    Hello,
We've seen that on our 2008 x64 servers the svchost.exe that holds gpsvc in it takes up alot of CPU-time. Upon further investigation I saw that when it refreshes policies it holds 1 core for 10 minutes. I setup a procmon and filtered it on the pid off the gpsvc-svchost and saw that it logged 8.5 million events.
It keeps looping events where it seems to be checking history-data under "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Group Policy\History\<GUIDS>".
We are using GPPreferences. Has anyone seen anything like this before?
I have the .PML-file from procmon, however its 350MB zipped so I dont know how to attach it to case.

    Hi,
To better understand the issue, please help confirm the following:
    1.    Do all computers encounter this issue?
    2.    When did this issue begin to occur? Did it coincide with any events, such as the installation of some software?
Meanwhile, please perform the steps below to see if the issue goes away:
    1.    Delete the contents in the "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Group Policy\History\" folder.
    2.    Please perform a clean boot on the server:
    1)    Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    2)    On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    3)    Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    4)    Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    5)    Click OK.
    6)    When you are prompted, click Restart.
If the issue continues, please help collect the following information for further research:
    1.    Enable gpsvc.log:
Please create the following key in Registry Editor:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Diagnostics
    Type: DWORD
    Value: GPSvcDebugLevel
    Data: 0x30002 (hexadecimal)
    2.    Please run gpupdate /force to reproduce the issue and then collect MPSReport on the server:
    1) Download the MPSReport from the website below:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=CEBF3C7C-7CA5-408F-88B7-F9C79B7306C0&displaylang=en
    2) Double-click the executable to launch the report gathering tool on the computer.
    3) Follow the steps as guided by the Wizard.
    4) On the Select the diagnostics you want to run page, select General, Internet and Networking, Business Networks, and Server Components.
    3.    After that, please zip the gpsvc.log (%windir%\debug\usermode\gpsvc.log), MPSReport and the PML.file and upload to the following space:

  • SVCHOST.EXE Overflow and WMI Crash

    Hello, collegues!
I faced with a problem after deploying SCCM 2012 Agent and SCEP 2012 on clients on Windows 7 SP1.
The WMI Compent crushes and svchost.exe proccess for netsvc services got overflowed and it uses a lot of RAM Memory and grows and grows.
I found out that this error appears when the agent tries to ask WMI and recieves an error ".....WBEM_E_NOT_FOUND....."
Also i found some hotfixes from MS how to solve this problem, here they are:
    KB2492536
    KB2465990
    KB2492536
    KB982293
    KB974930
Anyway, these help only before installing SCCM 2012 agent, afterwards i need to rebuild WMI Repository for system working correct. By the way there is no log information in Event Viewer, provided by system. I found this error only in log files of SCCM agent
    located localy in the System.
Did anyone faced with this issue?
Is there any normal solves provided by MS or maybe is it known?

Since no one has answer this post, I recommend opening  a support case with CSS as they can work with you to solve this problem.

  • SVCHost.exe

svchost.exe, is consuming 200-600mb of memory on start up and does not stop until i kill the process then does it again x2, then the display settings go from the sleek design to a windows 98 look then svchost.exe stops leaking but
why is svchost.exe leaking in the first place after not doing it for 2-3 years of owning this computer running the same os.
    os: Windows 7 64 bit - fully up-to-date
    thanks in advance

    Hi Huzaifa,
Please make sure the svchost.exe file is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32. In other cases, svchost.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm. Also check the user name of the process, it should be SYSTEM、LOCAL
    SERVICE or NETWORK SERVICE.
This process manages system services that run from dynamic link libraries (files with extension .dll). Examples for such system services are: "Automatic Updates", "Windows Firewall", "Plug and Play", "Fax Service",
    "Windows Themes".
First you need to know what service/dll sys is running by SVCHOST.exe.
Download Process Explorer from this website
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
    Information about pool monitor

Open Process Explorer and find the problem SVCHOST.exe and check which service is taking resources.

  • Router continually accessing svchost.exe, cycling through all ports

    Hi,
I recently did a clean install of Windows XP, since then my firewall (ZoneAlarm) has been continually blocking access attempts made by my router (WRT54G) to access svchost.exe, as shown here:
    http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/9425/89700028.png
My router has a wired connection to my PC and by disconnecting the wire the access attempts stop. I don't know what is causing this or how to resolve the issue. So far I've only tried hard-resetting the router, which didn't help.
    Any help would be appreciated

Firstly, thanks a lot for your help, I appreciate it.
Secondly, I'm reasonably sure that the problem isn't malware. Like I said in my first post, I only did a clean install of WinXP yesterday and since then I've only updated to SP3 and installed Firefox, ZoneAlarm, AVG, Adobe Reader and Flash. Just incase I just installed and ran Malwarebytes and Hijackthis and I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. Of course I want to make sure that it isn't malware.
I've done what you said (this version of WinXP doesn't have tasklist apparently but I downloaded "Process Explorer" which serves the same function) and tried to find the process which needs those ports. The problem is that the ports accessed began at 10xx and continued all the way up to 25xx and probably would continue beyond. The svchosts with PIDs running in that range are running about 20 services... I'm not sure how I can find which service is causing the specific problem. I'm not even sure what services should be provided in the normal running of Windows.
e.g. termsrv.dll -  Remote Desktop Session Host Server Remote Connections Manager
rpcss.dll - Remote Procedure Call (two instances of this running under two different svchost processes)
ssdpsrv.dll - permits discovery of UPnP devices on your home network
Should all of these be running normally as part of Windows? And seaching all of these processes on Google says that they COULD be a trojan/malware but I don't know how I could find out which are (outside of virus scanning - which I've already done). All are located in the windows/system32/ folder which makes me think they're not anything untoward but, again, I don't know for sure.
I appreciate that you can't help any more than you have but given everything I've tried is there anything else that I can do?
     Thanks again.

  • 100% CPU Utilization by svchost.exe evidently due to Acrobat reader & Adobe players

I have been working on a PC that was rendered inoperable because svchost.exe pegged the CPU @ 100%. After working on it for a couple of hours, I reformatted the HD & restored the OS. In the process of re-installing programs, when I got to the Adobe products (Flash, Shockwave, Air & Acrobat reader) again svchost.exe was pegging the CPU @ 100%. So I removed the 4 above mentioned & restored the PC to just before the installation, and the PC was back to normal. Next I re-installed Acrobat reader, and svchost.exe pegged the processor again at 100%. After removing Acrobat reader & going back to the restore point, everything was normal again. The next time I tried just the Flash & Shockwave players, and pegged again. Would draw the same conclusion as me that there is a problem with the Adobe downloads? I have another PC on my bench that seems to have the same problem. If there is anyone from Adobe that would like to address this issue please contact me. [email protected]

This is a user-to-user forum, and it is very unlikely that someone "from Adobe" will contact you. It is not recommended that you post your email address in a public forum, as it will only attract spambots.
The fact that svchost is using high CPU resources (without any of the Adobe products actually running) indicates to me that you have something in your startup items that triggers svchost usage. Examine your startup list and eliminate anything that could doing that.

  • 100% CPU utilization on svchost.exe or Automatic Updates service

We have upgraded from WSUS 2.0 to 3.0 SP1 and now have few Windows XP SP2 PCs that are extremely slow because the CPU is at 100% utilization running a process called "svchost.exe."  If I go into services and stop and disable the "Automatic Updates" service the CPU drop to normal almost instantly.  I tried forcing a reinstall of the Windows Update Agent.  After I enable the "Automatic Updates" service the machine works fine for a day, than after a reboot it goes back to 100% CPU utilization.  We need this fixed so we can get these computers updates.

    Hi Ryan / Folks,
NO CA Products here - but I have had the same issues with Microsoft updates!
Here's the install path I used during my experience :
Cold install of XP with SP1 on the PC (Full factory system restore/rebuild).
    Acer - Semperon 1.8GHz + 1GB RAM - 8Mb ADSL connection to Internet
    XP SP2
Windows updates OK - used to install IE7
Reason - I found IE is compromised if you go straight to XP SP3
    XP SP3
    Next Office 2003 Pro
Switch to Microsoft updates - Custom Updates - SVCHost issue - Still checking for updates after 15 minutes
Switch back to Windows updates - Custom Updates - NO SVCHost Issue - Checking complete after 2 minutes
Tried both Microsoft fixes mentioned above
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891
Same report back - i.e. SP3 newer etc.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 - Method 2
    Seems to install ok
    Reboot PC
Swich back to manual Microsoft Updates and all is not really rosey as the initial "checking updates" scan can take at least 5 minutes with SVCHost at better than 90% CPU usage. So I believe the issue is not fixed, but it is just about useable.
Interestingly, no issues on my work LAN where I am the systems manager - 20 PCs and 8 servers using WSUS. All units are up to date and no SVCHost issues.
So.... No fix yet here, however my solution is as follows:
On the problematic PC I decided to switch back to Automatic Windows Updates. This keeps the PC up to date with all Operating System patches. Performance is not affected. I have decided that I will manually switch to the Microsoft update system once every couple of weeks or so to catch the updates for Office etc. I'll just have to set the updates scan running over a quiet period I suppose.
Plan B = Manual Office Updates http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/downloads/default.aspx - Left Pane - Office Updates.
    Hope this sheds some light.

  • Many itunes install/uninstalls...hangs on shutdown - svchost.exe memory err

On my new desktop, I've been fighting to install itunes. This was frought with problems from the first try, but I'll skip all those sordid details. Escalating from some earlier more simple attempts to uninstall & reinstall iTunes, I just went through what must be the Ultimate exhaustive complete uninstall process, shown at support.apple.com/kb/HT1926 (Completely Remove iTunes and Quicktime). As this section instructs, I then reinstalled iTunes from a fresh download. Between the uninstall and reinstall, my system shut down normally, with no hangs. As always, though, with itunes installed, I get an interruption at shutdown:
    svchost.exe Application Error
The instruction at "0x77dd6bcc" referenced memory at "0x77dd6bcc". The memory could not be "written".
Three more clicks of "cancel" on that advisory only serve to shift the code a few digits or letters (i.e. 0x77df5655, etc), and then the system is hung for good on "Saving Your Settings..."
This hang did't happen before my attempts at installing itunes.
On my last two attempts at this, at least the radio function has come back - nothing worked before. But I can't tolerate a hang at shutdown in my life - it'll happen every time from now on & who knows what else will be affected by this.
    Any help appreciated.

  • Svchost.exe crashing - anyone help?

    I have a 865PE Neo2 running a P4 2.4 800fsb and BIOS 1.3 and a Geforce 4 Ti4600.
I started to experience the system freezing up/hanging on a regular basis. As a result I attempted to reinstall windows XP.  ?(
Now every time i boot the system up, within 2-10 mins I will get an error message saying the svchost.exe has encountered a problem and has shut down.  This results in Windows shutting my whole system down.  ;(
I have spoken to friends about this and they say it maybe a memory issue, but i tried running 1 of my sims at a time (2x 256 DDR 400) and i still got the same error.  :O
    Can anyone help??
I have ready about BIOS 1.3 overclocking graphics cards could this be the case?

I found out what this is: its a virus  ;(  :O
but one thats easy to fix  :D

  • I have three email accounts on my iPhone.  one account is now constantly downloading old emails as unread.  I am know into the thousands.  How can I stop that

I have three email accounts on my iphone.  one of the accounts is now constantly downloading old emails and marking them as unread. I can I stop this from happening?

iPhone mirrors the content of your accounts. You can turn off that account by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > account > turn off mail. Then access your email account via webmail/website and delete them there. Once you turn on the account again in your iPhone it wont download them all. Otherwise to leave it downloading then mark them all read once downloaded.

  • Memory leaks- high memory usage svchost.exe

    hello!
im having a kind of a similar problem. Im using a Q6600 with 4Gb of RAM running on Windows 7 x64. My physical memory usage history is 1.75GB idle but my CPU usage looks good ~ 0%.
In Windows Task Manager when i arranged the memory column, the process with the highest memory usge is svchost.exe with 116,572K. And i have 14 svchost.exe in my computer! I opened process exporer and check the legitimate of all those svchost.exe
and they are all legit. When i look at the properties of the highest svchost.exe in process explorer, the services which is running under it is as follows
    AudioEndPointBuilder c:\Windows\System32\Audiosrv.dll
    CscService c:\Windows\System32\cscsvc.dll
    hidserv c:\Windows\System32\hidserv.dll
    Netman c:\Windows\System32\netman.dll
    PcaSvc c:\Windows\System32\pcasvc.dll
    SysMain c:\Windows\System32\sysmail.dll
    TrkWks c:\Windows\System32\trkwks.dll
    UxSms c:\Windows\System32\uxsms.dll
    wudfsvc c:\Windows\System32\WUDFSvc.dll
    All are legit DLLS.
Is it normal to have 14 svchost.exe running at the same time(system, local service, network service in Task Manager)
and how can i reduce the memory usage of the svchost.exe?

    Hi,
There can be multiple instances of Svchost.exe running at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that separate services can
be run depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started.
If you would like to reduce the usage of this service, I could share the following article with you:

    Hope it helps.

  • Having problem with svchost.exe/ntdll.dll errors causing GPSVC (Group Policy Client) to crash preventing users from logging into the server.

Recently (within the past 2 weeks) I have noticed a few of our servers will have problems with the svchost.exe application causing the GPSVC (Group Policy Client) to crash. The only fix at that point is to reboot the server since the GPSVC service is tied
to svchost.exe and therefore is protected from being manually restarted.
I noticed the following errors when this occurs:

I've searched and cannot seem to find any information as to what may be causing this, or even really where to start. Would someone be able to help me identify what might be causing this event, specific with the Exception code: 0xc0000024, which causes
the Group Policy Client service to stop?

You still out there looking at things? If so I have an update. The issue hasn't stopped, even though it did seemingly die down for awhile, however, it is now back with a vengeance.
I am able to force it to happen by killing the svchost process that is hosting GPSVC. If I run gpupdate /force, then logout/login it does get GPSVC running again. Furthermore, if I simply start svchost again via the Task Manager GPSVC starts running again.
When I access the server remotely with KVM it acts just like it does as if I'm logging into it via Citrix/RDP which for Admin IDs gives an error saying "Failed to connect to a windows service. Windows could not connect to the Group Policy Client service...",
however, normal user accounts just get a message when logging into the server "The Group Policy Client Service Failed the Logon. Access is denied."
I haven't opened a case with Microsoft yet, but we about ready to because of the increase in these errors.
If you have any further suggestions that would be great, otherwise I'll provide an update once I get word back from Microsoft.
**EDIT -- apparently I mistook the the server's SCM's actions as my own. I was able to successfully crash the GPSVC service by killing the hosting svchost process, however, after I crashed it and let it sit crashed for awhile when I attempted
to restart either by starting a svchost task, or running gpupdate /force it failed. Either that, or there is a timing issue where if we don't restart the svchost process, or run gpupdate /force quickly enough it won't be able to recover without a reboot.
