With the US keyboard it's Command-` or Command-~
which should be Command-< or Command-> with the French keyboard.
Look in the "Keyboard Navigation" section" of "Keyboard Shortcuts" in "Keyboard & Mouse" system preference to see if it has been changed on your system. Does it work in other user accounts"?

How to switch between 2 windows of the same application using Cmd+Tab

Hi,
I am using my mac now since about 10 months. I was used to work with Linux and Windows XP.
Something I am badly missing on mac os x is the possibility to switch between 2 windows of the same application using cmd + tab just like it simply works for Linux and Windows (and maybe many other OS out there!).
Very often I have 2 text files open in 2 editor windows (e.g. TextEdit) and need to copy and paste text from one window to the other. I was used to simply use ALT+TAB. But here I have to get my right hand away from the keyboard and use the mouse to change the focus from one window to the other and then use the mouse again to get the focus back to the previous TextEdit windows.
THIS REALLY *****!!!! It makes me crazy. I cannot believe that such a "modern" OP does not support this action. I must be doing something completely wrong or did not understand the mac correctly. Right?
Does anyone have an idea how I can get mac to do something all other operating systems so easily do?

well what you are saying is obvious to me. This is not the point for me and not what I wanted to know. But I think you answered my question anyway: OS X is unable to switch between windows of the same application as I mentioned in my example.
WHY NOT???
Every other OS is able to differentiate between windows and not just applications.
Another example: The Mail application and an Email editor window. When you are writing an Email and you want to switch to the main window of the Mail application to read something you must again use the mouse!
I mean Apple seems to be "somehow" using FreeBSD in the background and even in FreeBSD's window manager it is possible to switch between windows of the same application.
Well, in the Apple world it is always the pour user who is not intelligent enough to understand Apple's philosophy ;-(
To me this is not modern, it is simply a weakness of the OS.

Quickly switch windows of the same application

Hello,
when I have a lot of applications open, I can use Command-Tab to quickly switch between applications and this is working great. I am looking for a similar functionality to quickly switch between windows of the same application. For example, I have 10 Safari windows open. I am looking for a keyboard shortcut to switch between all open windows of Safari (like you can do with Command-Tab for applications).
I know I can use Expose but this is not convenient. I also can do "click and hold" the application icon to do Expose just on the specific application but if you have a lot of windows open, it is not easy to find the one you are looking for. A keyboard shortcut to loop through open windows in an application would be better.
Any idea?

It depends upon the application. But command-tilde will move you to the next window and command-shift-tilde will move you back in many applications (including Safari).

Communicate between two (same) Applications

Hi there,
I've written a server application in java.
This Server is always running in the background.
For restart/shutdown or similar purpose I want to communicate with this application.
Is ist possible to start the same application with a args-flag that causes the running server to shutdown.
I know it's easy possible by doing this via the socket connection.
Because of security-reasons I want to avoid this. To limit this to the localhost is to insecure.
Any ideas?

Ok, I will explain it in detail.
I don't want to open a new Port for this,
so it is possible to use the existing open port.
The idea to limit control sequences to localhost can made by Socket.getInetAdress() (maybe insecure (fake IP)) for the existing port or via Konstruktor of ServerSocket for a new port
The point is:
I dont't want to grant access to other users on this machine!
And I don't want to limit a port for localhost from the system-enviroment via root-possibilities.
If there is no other possibility, I think I try to use a new Port for this. I just wanted to know if this is the only possibility or are there other easier ways.

Sharing applications between users on the same machine

I am new to the world of MAc OSX, I bought my mac to run a specific application, No problem there, However that application needs to be accessed via multiple users on the same machine. So far I have created the user logons, But each user gets a new iteration of the same application. How can I make one copy of the application together with all its data base files accesible my other users, Also when the user that owns the application logs off...the application is terminated... I have set up fast switching...as a work around so the application will stay up, but Other users cant see it...Help please

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
However that application needs to be accessed via multiple users on the same machine.
If the app is in the HD/Applications folder, all users can access it and use it. Then it doesn't matter of the other users are logged on or off. It's not a different iteration, there is no duplication.
To share the data: as Kappy says, put it in the Users/Shared folder. Each user can see into another user's Shared Folder.
Here's a question: if each user has to use the same app plus the same data, why have different accounts? The whole point of different accounts is to keep data separate?

Move an iTunes library between users on the same mac

How do I move an iTunes library between users on the same mac?
I accidentally created a secondary user on my mac some time ago when using the migration tool and am now going back and transferring all my files from the secondary to the admin user profile.
I wanted to know which itunes files/folders need to be copied over.
Is the process as simple as replacing the itunes folder on admin with the copied itunes folder from my secondary profile or do I need to delete the admin folder first and then copy the old folder over or do I delete the contents of the folder and replace with the copied contents?
I am using shared folders to move between users, but want to make sure that I am picking the right files to transfer.

Assuming you have left iTunes to default settings so everything is still in the iTunes folder the way iTunes likes it to be, copy the whole of the iTunes folder to the new location. If it is in the default directory (Home > Music) for iTunes the application will automatically use it there for the new account. If you put it elsewhere you will have to start iTunes and immediately hold down the option key to direct it to the new location.

How can I make different windows of the same application I have open remain on their respective desktops/spaces after reboot?

I use the same applications for work, entertainment and other personal activities, so it's impossible to simply assign different apps to different desktops/spaces. Thus, I have open windows of the same programs (Pages, TextEdit, Preview) arranged on several desktops. If I reboot my laptop, the windows are just crammed on Desktop 1. Can something be done about it?

many thanks for your efforts and your time (preparing and posting the screenshot, answering to this question,...).
Unfortunately, moving the focus to the next window only works with windows on the same desktop.
btw, using a german keyboard layout and german language settings the shortcut is "cmd+<".
I can switch with this shortcut between different windows of my Safari which reside on the same desktop, but I cannot swith between different safari windows distributed over several desktops.

I am developing driver and i need to communicate between two thread.

Both should run in the same process so HAL will run as one thread and driver as another thread in the same process .I don't want HAL to wait for completion of request and also i don't want driver to be blocked .
We are planning to use a File Interface for communication between Hardware abstraction layer and Driver
HAL will send the command or read/write operation to a file interface and driver will get the command or read/write request from the File interface
There is a flexibility to change Hardware Abstraction layer and also the Driver
Is it possible to use IOCTL between two thread under same process? if not what other options do we have.

How to avoid multiple logins to same application

Hi, I am using APEX version 4.2.1.00.08. I have a function for AD LDAP authentication. The authentication scheme has Set Cookie Attributes, Cookie Name SESSION_COOKIE. I have been using this for years on previous versions of APEX. As part of the 4.2 upgrade I would like it if users did not have to log in many times a day to the same application. I email links to the application, but even if they are already logged in, it opens page 101 in a new browser window and requires a second login. The email contains a link like this https://server/apex/f?p=102:2:::NO::P2_RECORDID:200000:/ I have read multiple posts, for example "Access two applications with one log in" and http://apps2fusion.com/at/64-kr/413-maintaining-authentication-between-apex-applications but I am still clueless. If a user has logged in once and has an APEX session, is it possible to click the link in the email without having to log in again to the same application? There is an after submit process Set Username Cookie and Onload Before Header process Get Username Cookie. Do I need Set Session Cookie and Get Session Cookie processes? Thanks for your time.

I'm not familiar with LDAP but from a security point of view, I think it is wise to force your users to login if you sending them a link to a protected site. Just in case they forward the email or sharing the same computer. Could you post some of the code that you use to produce the email? It maybe that you need to concatenate &SESSION. where the session id would be in the url

How to install several instances of the same application on a computer?

I have an application in LV 2009, where I have created an installer. The installer installs to a directory called \Receiver relative to the Program Files directory. If I install this once to a computer, everything is OK.
However, I want to install the same application twice on the same computer. There should be no conflicts between the two applications, since I can configure them to work on different directories and ports. But if I call the installer again, and selects another directory, nothing is installed and I get the message "Installation Summary - No software will be installed or removed". It seems like the installer ignores that I have selected another directory, and just uses the default directory, relative to the Program Files directory.
Anyone knows the trick, how to install several instances on the same computer ?

This is so because each installer has a GUID that is used to check whether the application needs to be upgraded or not. (It's a Microsoft function).
What you can do is create a new installer with a different GUID (copy the installer in the projects), and check witha text editor whether this GUID has changed.
But any specific reason you need two seperate installs? You can run the application twice with a specific INI token:

Swapping between 2 Oracle instances and Discoverer

We have this strategy of swapping between 2 Oracle instances every month to minimize downtime for our users. Our data warehouse is refreshed every month which takes about 2 to 4 days. Instance 2 is being re-loaded with next month's data, while users are currently pointing to Instance 1, loaded with current month's data. Once re-load is completed with Instance 2, users will now have to point to Instance 2. This goes on every month. How can we implement swapping, without our Discoverer users even knowing that the database had been swapped?

If you are using Discoverer on the web, every two months you can change the TNS entry for the database on all the Discoverer server machines. That way the users type the same database alias (or you can code it into the URL so they don't have to type it), and Discoverer will connect to whichever database you have defined for that alias. Since the TNSnames.ora file is not on the users' machines, you can update them as you need.

How to swap between iTunes accounts

I have 2 iTunes accounts on the one computer. How do I easily swap between the accounts? The only way I have been able to do it is by deauthorising the computer for one of the accounts? Suggestions

Both accounts can be authorised on the same iTunes at the same time. You can swap between them if you want to make purchases with the other account by logging out of the current account (Store > Sign Out) and then logging in with the second account (Store > Sign In) - only one account can be signed in at a time.

Is it possible to reuse views between components of the same project ?

Does anyone knows if its possible to re-use views/viewsets which maybe common between components within the same project ? I am trying to use back common views where possible so that it will be easier to maintain the application should there be changes in the future. Having identical views across the components will mean that there is a need to maintain muliples views when updating/amending. Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you very much Bharathwaj. I am not very keen in using JDI (lack of usage knowledge + current project to small to use JDI + insufficient time) and hence I guess I will need to continue to look around for another solution.
