Switching to AT&T questions...

Hi,
1.) You can order the iPhone 3GS online (AT&T, Apple etc)... and have the phone shipped to your house. I assume this means you can activate it on your own as well?
2.) If I'm going to transfer my number (during the ordering process) will it cut off my service that I have with T-Mobile as soon as I place the order or will the physical change happend when the phone gets activated?
Thanks.

In most cases, yes.

The number doesn't port until the iPhone is activated.

  • Switching to Mac: MBPr Questions!

    Hey all,
So I've been a Windows user my whole life, but I've finally decided to switch to Mac after witnessing the beauty and grace of the 13" mac book pro retina that my friend just bought. It's astonishing. Plus, there's no better time to switch than when you have a 3 year old HP laptop and are in university.
Since switching to Apple is bloody expensive (nearly double the budget of what I usually spend on laptops), I want to carefully calculate my decision.
I know that the most recent MBP to be released was in October 2013, and it updated to Intel Haswell processors. BUT I also happen to know that Intel Broadwell processors are coming out within the next couple of months, and are said to be around 30% more efficient. Do any of you know if Apple has the tendency to regularly update their MBPs?
The reason I ask is because if there won't be an update to the MBP until October 2014, then I might as well invest in one now, but if there is a chance that a newer model will be released in the coming months, I'll definitely hold out until then!
    Also, another couple of questions:
Without tweaking the MBP (by adding extra ram, processing power, etc...), how well will it run software like Ableton Live, as well as various games such as call of duty?
    Thanks a bunch everyone,
Hopefully I'll also be part of the Mac family soon!

There will always be some kind of upgrade to the macbook pros every year. You shouldn't stress about trying to keep up with technology I have a 13" retina late 2013 and am very happy with it.
I did do some research and found out that  Apple will not release the Broadwell processors until late 2014.
    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/broadwell-to-launch-2h-2014,24765.html
A $300 PS3 can run Call of Duty so of course a $1,000 +Mac will run it just fine. Ableton Live will run great.
If you are going to have lots of apps open, then the 4GB ram on the base model of the 13 inch might not be enough and I would recommend upgrading to 8GB ram or get the mid model 13 inch as it has more storage anyway.
I do not recommend getting the 15 inch as it would cost you over $2,000!

  • PC switching to Mac - software question.

I am switching from a PC to MacBook Pro...
I am not sure of the best newsgroup to put this in, but I will start with this one.
I have installed Parelles to run a particular Windows app; most others that I use have a mac version.
I have a considerable investment in Win software (i.e. adobe software, Office 2007 etc.). To get the mac version, do I just have to buy it and loose my investment in win software? Will software key numbers from windows work while installing a comparable mac version? My question is about mac software, not win software running under Parallels.
    Please advise.
    Bob

To get the mac version, do I just have to buy it and loose* my investment in win software?
    No, you can either:
    1. Ask if a crossgrade is available from the software vendor.
    2. If none is available, sell the license for your PC software and buy a Mac software equivalent.
Will software key numbers from windows work while installing a comparable mac version?
That varies by software title. Some allow you to change licenses. Check with the software vendor.
There are some almost free and free equivalent software titles to Windows software available for the Mac**:
    http://www.macmaps.com/crossplatform.html
    - * Just for your information, the word is lose, not loose. It is an easy mistake to make, which I have in the past when I wasn't as familiar with English spellings and meanings.

  • To switch to 5S or not to switch, that is the question?!

I own the 5 and I just got the 5S as a gift.
My problem is that the iPhone 5S is 32GB and my 5 is 64GB and after I synced the 5S I saw that I only have 7GB left.
Should I switch to the 5S anyway or should I keep my 5 with the 64GB?

Only you can truly answer that question.
if you want the lastest and greatest, then switch to the 5S.
If you want more memory, then stick with the 5

  • Potental switcher with some Mac questions...

Hey all, I'm an XP user who is thinking of buying an iBook. I'm a college student, so having a laptop to take to class and school would really be a great plus for me. I've tried out iBooks at my local Apple store and I've done some initial research, but I still have a few questions. I'm hoping that somebody here will be nice enough to help me out at least a little bit.
I currently have a desktop PC with Windows XP running. Since I divide my time between this computer and the computers at my college, I have a folder marked "Active Files-Spring 2006" on the desktop of my PC. I have copies of these files in two other places, a Zip drive (the computer is old) and an iPod Shuffle that does duty as a flash drive. Since I use the computers at the school more than my PC, I mainly use the files on either the Zip or the Shuffle as the main files (what I start the files from) and use the folder on my PC as a backup. When I change a file or folder, say in the Shuffle, for example, I then use the in-folder menu to make copies to both the Zip and the folder on my PC.
My question is this: in Tiger, is there an easy way to perform a similiar operation? If I had an iBook, I would then reverse the way I operate: The files on the computer would become my main files, with the Shuffle acting as a backup. Can I create a folder that holds all of my active files and place it on the right side of the dock? If I can do that, can I just copy and paste files from that folder to my Shuffle? I understand that if I drag and drop in between folders on different disks, it makes copies, whereas if I drag and drop between folders on the same disk, it moves the files. Is this correct?

Hi, nathan. Welcome to the Discussions.
FYI: When asking multiple questions, it helps to number them individually. That way someone can respond without quoting the text so that their answers relate directly to your specific questions.
    1. You wrote: "My question is this: in Tiger, is there an easy way to perform a similiar operation?"Sort of.
    2. You wrote: "Can I create a folder that holds all of my active files and place it on the right side of the dock?"Icons in the dock are actually aliases, ala shortcuts in Windows parlance.
You'd create a folder, say in your Home folder, called "Active Files" and keep your active files there. You'd then drag the icon for this folder to the Dock to have quick access the "Active Files" folder or its contents via the Dock.
One does not copy/move files out of the folder in the Dock. One places a folder's icon in the dock to quickly open the folder, or open a file in the folder, or add files to the folder.
If you want to copy/move files between "Active Files" and your Shuffle, you'd click "Active Files" icon in the Dock, which will open the real Active Files folder and then make the copy/move operations you desire from the real folder to the Shuffle.
You wrote: " I understand that if I drag and drop in between folders on different disks, it makes copies, whereas if I drag and drop between folders on the same disk, it moves the files. Is this correct?"Yes, but there's an important difference between how Windows and Macs work in this respect. Let's say you have a folder named Project in the Active Files folder and a copy of the Project folder on your Shuffle. In Windows, as I understand it, if you drag Project from the Shuffle to the Active Files folder on the PC, it essentially copies the changes on the Project folder on the Shuffle to the Project folder within the Active Files folder on the PC.
In Mac OS X, if you dragged the Project folder on the Shuffle to the Active Files folder on the iBook, it would warn you that you are about to replace the Project folder within Active Files with the Project folder from the Shuffle. If you approve this action, then the Project folder in Active Files would be completely replaced by a copy of the Project folder copied from the Shuffle.
A number of Windows users unfamiliar with how this works on a Mac have been surprised when they thought that only the differences would be copied, as opposed to it being a complete replacement. Mac OS X uses the literal interpretations of the words Move, Copy, and Replace.
    Good luck!

  • Thinking of switching but have some questions?

I'm thinking about using my upgrade and get the iPhone...I currently have the Blackeberry Tour....I also have an iTunes account...how do I get the phone up and running?  I always purchased a new phone at the store and they set it up for me.  Will all of my information from my BB transfer to the iPhone?  Can this be done from the store or do I have to do it at my with my iTunes account?
    Thanks!

  • 3550 Switch -Fiber interface VLAN question

    Hello,
I will deploying two Cisco 3550 Switches and connecting them via a ordinary multimode fiber with GBIC 1000BASE-SX - transceivers installed on each switch. Here is my question: I will be configureing about half of the ports on each of the switches to be in one of two VLANS. I would like to configure the two vlans to run over the single fiber line. Is is possible to configure one fiber port, with the GBIC 1000BASE-SX - transceiver installed, with two vlans and/or subinterfaces each with half of the 1000mb of bandwidth, or will I need to run an additional fiber line connected to the second fiber interface on the 3550 to accomplish this. I really hope not to as I don't have the funds to run a second line at this time. If this configuration is possible could someone please point me to documentation on how to configure this and\or give some advice. Thank you.
    Regards,
    JPS

Just set up the link as a trunk , this allows you to send as many vlans across that link as you want . On each side just do the following.
    switchport
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk mode dynamic desirable
Verify trunk status with the "show int trunk " command.

  • Need help on my conditional logic (to switch or not to switch, that is the question)

I'm trying to write a function that will evaluate two variables, $misc1 and $misc2, they may or may not contain text. Essentially the possible outcomes are this:
    1) $Misc1 is blank and $Misc2 is blank
    2) $Misc1 is blank and $Misc2 has data
    3) $Misc1 has data and $Misc2 is blank
    4) $Misc1 has data and $Misc2 has data
    if 1, return $null
if 2, return the value of $misc2 + 5 blank spaces
if 3, return the value of $misc1 + 5 blank spaces
    if 4, return the value of $misc1 + 5 blank spaces + $misc2
Can I switch this, or does that only work on a single variable?
    [email protected]

Thank you mdkelley, ended up with this:
    Function Misc-Blank
    Param
    [string]$Misc1 = $Misc1,
    [string]$Misc2 = $Misc2
    if(([string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc1)) -and ([string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc2))){return,$null}
    if(([string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc1)) -and (-not [string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc2))){return, " $misc2"}
    if((-not [string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc1)) -and ([string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc2))){return, " $misc1"}
    if((-not [string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc1)) -and (-not [string]::IsNullOrWhiteSpace($Misc2))){return, "$misc1 $misc2"}

  • Basic switch negotiating/fixed port question...

    Hello,
Is there an issue with Cisco switches not negotiating port duplex and speed issues? We are finding ourselves running around having to fix these settings on most ports and on various switch models. Any thoughts or suggestions or comments, greatly welcome.
    TIA,
    Gary

Usually when one side is hardcoded with the speed/duplex, the hardcoded side will not be sending pulses to negotiate with the auto-side.
Therefore, the switch-end configured as "auto" sends pulses (i think it's called fast link pulse) to the other end & also waits to receive flp from the remote-end to determine the right port speed/duplex to use, but since the remote-side NIC has been hardcoded, it doesn't transmit it's side of the pulse.
Resulting in no-nego. Therefore, causing mismatch since it is unable to determine the duplex to use.

  • Switching Sides - A few questions about this build

Well, here I am... A Final Cut Pro user building a new box for Premier CS5. Would you believe it? I'm mostly working with AVCHD / H.264 hopefully natively depending on how the system performs. Mostly just editing in Premier and converting to MPEG, and H.264 for the web and blu ray.
Here is build that I have came up with. I love the case, it looks huge.
Antec Twelve Hundred Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
    GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R
    Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz
    Mushkin Enhanced Redline 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
    EVGA 012-P3-1470-AR GeForce GTX 470 (Fermi) 1280MB
    CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-650HX 650W ATX12V v2.2
I have a few questions if you guys don't mind:
    1) The RAM i listed is speed 6. But it's only 6gb. I could spend more and get 12GB but it would be much slower (speed 9). I'm really only using premier, encoder, and encore. Little if no AE, etc. Will the performance gain be worth it to invest in slower 12GB ram?
    2) Any experience with the Matrox card? Everything I make gets exported to blu ray and some of it online (h.264). Seems like the $500 would be well spent.
    3) What is the cheapest version of Windows 7 that has the features someone like me would need?
    4) Is the PSU enough @ 650w? I plan on it powering 6+ HDDs.
I greatly apprechiate any help! Thank you so much!

    My CS5/AVCHD 1st Impressions http://forums.adobe.com/thread/652694?tstart=0 includes a link to what I built
According to other messages, 12Gig gives about a 30% performance boost over 6Gig
Win7 64bit Pro is what I have, and what I would use again if I was building
    What Matrox card?
The GTX 470 is the current "sort'a budget" card, with the Hack http://forums.adobe.com/thread/629557?tstart=0
A 650w power supply is not enough... get 850w as a minimum... not only for the drives, but the GTX 470 uses a LOT of power... for you, 1000w may be better for that many drives (plus, of course, your burner)
Get any optional case fans for your model... I do not overclock, and I bought an after market CPU cooler to replace the stock Intel model, as well as two 120mm case fans to blow directly on the CPU cooler and GTX 285
Buy http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-linux.htm and use it to make full boot drive image backups after every step of your build, when you are sure everything is working well, so you may easily restore to a known good state if you install some piece of software and it screws up your system

  • 802.1x Dynamic VLAN Switching Question

Trying to set up 802.1x dynamic VLAN switching, and have a question. I think I've gotten it working except for one part. The VLAN on a protected interface is never getting switched. I can see an entry in the ACS stating that it applied the appropriate VLAN via RADIUS response, but it never changes on the switch.
    Environment:
    ACS Express 5.0.1
    C3550 running c3550-ipbasek9-mz.122-44.SE6.bin
    Switch config:

    radius-server host 10.10.1.4 auth-port 1645 acct-port 1646 key 7 01000307490E125E731F
    Am I missing something easy?

It looks like "aaa authorization network default group dot1x" was the missing command I needed to get this working.
The only issue I'm having now is that if the client fails to meet the authentication requirements, the line status gets set as "down"

  • MacBook Pro Trackpad Secondary Click not working properly - switching apps

I have a MacBook Pro 15" (new Core 2 Duo) with 10.4.8. On my main account, when I try and use the trackpad's two-finger-click to perform the secondary click functionality, I have a problem where instead of showing the secondary menu (same as control-click) it instead shows me the application switch screen (same as you see when entering command-tab).
I logged in under a new user account and enabled secondary click and it works properly -- so this appears to be either a conflict/issue in a plist (though I deleted the plist for mouse and keyboard and the issue still remains) or possibly with some other application/utility that is installed.
Without recreating my world one-by-one, any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Brian
MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 15" 2.33 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Using SOHO Notes, Yojimbo, StuffIt, and QuickSilver

    Update on the situation:
    1) Reboot in Safe Mode (shift-key down at start-up) -- secondary click still shows the application switcher.
    2) Ran Onyx -- Execute the defaults (no others) in the Automation tab and after rebooting the issue still persists.
    3) I removed the Microsoft drivers from my system and all plist files -- and reinstalled the MS drivers. On first use of the right-button on the mouse, I got the same "secondary click" response that I get with the trackpad. Before the uninstall it had worked correctly. I remember looking at the MS Mouse config options and it showed the right button performing a control-click. Now, with the preferences at their defaults from the software removal and reinstallation, I see there is an option -- and it is the default option, that the right-mouse button performs a "secondary click".
So it isn't a trackpad or mouse issue, it is an issue that somehow the default system behavior for a secondary click has been changed from displaying the alternate menu to showing the application switcher.
So the question is, what application or utility changed that? I was evaluating the Apple Mighty Mouse a few months ago and decided against it -- the right sensor seemed to fail often. Did that have an option to modify the secondary-click? I have Google and searched for tersm like ["secondary click" setting change modification hack, etc] and haven't seen any mention of that ability -- but clearly on my machine under my main user account, this is happening.
I hope that helps get one step closer.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Which is better for switch recovery

Currently we have a process that captures the output of show tech detail to a text file and that gets piped to a txt file and then copied to a server. This whole process was created back in the 2.x days. Now I see the option to do an image of the NVRAM to a file that could be copied off the switch. So my question is which one is better to recover your switch from or is there really no difference? The output files seem to be the same (they look the same in notepad but . . . )

Show tech detail would be much more than you need to recover a switch. I know early on (like in SAN OS 2.x) there was an issue with how the text output of a 'show run' was parsed, that resulted in some issues. Those have been resolved in the 3.x levels. I would recommend using the output from a 'copy nvram:startup-config' command as the recovery file for your switch configurations.
    Hope this helps,
    Mike

  • "Accounts" questions

I have a slot loading iMac that is shared by my wife, 2 kids and myself. I have 10.4.7 setup with Accounts so that each of us has a separate login. I have fast user switching enabled. Two questions:
    1. If I am running a program that requires Classic to boot up and run then when a user switches (instead of logging out) then the next user cannot run a program using Classic. The first user must totally log out and then the next one can run what she wants. Anyway around this?
    2. Similar problem with listening to iTunes. If music is being played then on switching users the music stops. Anyway for me to allow it to be played, sort of in the background?
    Thanks for the help

Similar problem with listening to iTunes. If music
is being played then on switching users the music
stops. Anyway for me to allow it to be played, sort
    of in the background?
It used to work that way under Panther, but not anymore under Tiger. It's not just iTunes; it goes for ANY sound outputting. Sounds are only audible if they are being output from the user account that is in the foreground.
This is a big annoyance with my family Mac. My wife uses Skype to chat with relatives overseas, and under Panther we'd hear her incoming calls no matter whose account was in the foreground. Now we can't hear any of her incoming calls unless her account is in the foreground. So when I'm using the computer she misses all her calls.
As far as I know there is no workaround for thie problem. I've posted about it on this discussion forum, on Usenet, on MacOSXHints, an OS X audio discussion board, and even phoned Applecare. Nobody knows how to fix it. So if you find a solution PLEASE PLEASE let me know!

  • Routed or bridged mode + licensing question

    Hi Cisco ACE gurus,
I have the following questions and I would be grateful if anyone could answer them.
    1) As we know the basic license for ACE limits its throughput to 4Gbps. What does it mean? Does it mean that only load balanced traffic is limited (policed) to 4Gbps? Or any other traffic passing through ACE is limited to 4Gbps (from what I know ACE is a cef720 linecard having 20Gbps to a switch fabric)?
My question comes from the following scenario. Let's say ACE is deployed in routed mode and it has 1 client vlan and 2 server vlans. There are VIPs, serverfarms, rservers defined etc.... Now there is a need for a rserver from vlan1 to communicate with a rserver from vlan2 (directly and not through a VIP). In this scenario def gateway of both servers points to ACE (ACE is doing inter-vlan routing).
So in this case in order to allow for that communication I would need to create ACLs and apply them to ACE interfaces.
Does it mean that the traffic would be limited to only 4Gbps?
    2) let's say I have 2 DC (2 different geo locations). ACE is located only in one of them. Real servers are dispersed in both of them. ACE is deployed in routed mode. Is it possible to configure ACE in such a scenario (to server VIPs for clients when rservers are in 2 different DC)?
My assumption is that it is possible and in order to do that I would have to use NAT (and source NAT client traffic) so that traffic sent from client to a VIP could be src natted and go to the other DC (through client vlan), reach the rsevers in the other DC and come back.
Is it possible to also do that while ACE is deployed in bridged mode?
While reading about ACE and NAT I came across the sentence "ACE is not able to NAT bridged traffic". What does it mean?
    regards

sorry Marko but I am lost. We are talking now about one-armed mode of deployment. There
are 2 contexts and the same vlan is used in both of them (that's why it is shared). In this case I don' understand what you wrote "you have server A in the shared VLAN of context A, you can not reach a VIP from context B" ... that is the same vlan so I can't see any problems..... unless you are describing situation for bridged mode deployment of ACE.
