Sychronizing lightroom on two computers

I have Lightroom on both laptop and desktop. When traveling I often do preliminary editing, emailing, web posting, etc., from the laptop but then I get home and can't figure out how to transfer what I've done to the desktop. (Of course I can easily transfer all email copies and original photos I've created.) Is there a way to copy the Lightroom "thumbnails" I've created on the laptop to the desktop for use there?

Not sure if you have found your preferred method or not, but what I do is use keep my PC and my laptop in sync. I use my laptop while travelling, and I tag (keyword) them on the road, then when I return, transfer it to my PC using a tool called Syncback Freeware. It was a complicated process to set up as shown here:
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?128@@.3bc340dc
But now that it is set up, I load the software, click on the lightrooom group, and let it run. My preferences, keyword sets, keywords, library, and pictures are the same between the two machines.
NOTE: I am not a professional, so I have no backup when travelling other than a copy of the folder with the new pictures. So if my drive was to crash on the road, I am relying on it being recoverable by a data specialist (but I have also researched the common ways that my hard drive has failed in the past.)

Can I use the same Lightroom software on both of my computers?

The license stipulates that you can install Lightroom on two computers under the condition that only one installation is being used at any given time. Lightroom does not have an activation feature, so there is no way to police your activity. The serial number is also cross-platform, meaning that you can install it on a Windows machine and a Mac.

  • Lightroom for two computers

    Hi there,
I have lightroom on my macbook, and now bought an imac. I'd love to install lightroom on there as well. I read that it's possible to install lightroom on two computers/laptops.. but how do I go about it? I downloaded the test version, and tried to enter the license key I used for my macbook version, but this doesn't work...
Thanks a lot for your help
    Cheers

  • Lightroom on two computers

my second computer is not recognizing the same serial number..I installed directly from Adobe and it's the latest version..
    what to do ?
    thanks

The basic answer is no...you cant. Lightroom requires that the "catalog" be located on a local drive, not accessible via a network. The images can indeed be stored on the network volume and be accessed by two separate catalogs on two separate computers. But Lightroom is not designed to have the same catalog accessed by two computers at once. This is a limitation of the way the database has been set up, not a piracy issue. In order to have two users access the same catalog, a lot of work would need to be done to Lightroom to be able to have two simultaneous users so that the last done operation was checked in and you didn't have data collisions leading to major problems...seriously, the problems would be considerable...

  • Synchronizing Adobe Lightroom on two computers??

    Hi,
I use 2 computers - a 17" Macbook Pro set up as a desktop, and a 13" Macbook as a laptop. Is there a way of synchronizing Lightroom on both of these machines? I'd like to be able to edit photographs on one or the other and have it mirror the work onto the other. Does anyone know how I can do this?
    Many thanks for any input!
    Nigel

No easy way to do this; it's export from one machine and import to the other.
This isn't a Mac OS X question, though -- you'd probably have better luck asking on Adobe's Lightroom forums.

  • May I install Lightroom on two computers?

Sorry if I have posted on the wrong forum.
I've installed Lightroom on my personal desktop. Does the license allow me to install on my personal laptop computer as well?

Yes, your license allows for activated installations on two machines.

  • Technical question:  Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??

    Technical question:
Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??
Here's a little more information on what I am trying to do.
I have a desktop computer with 4tb worth of pictures that has Lightroom and Photoshop on it. I also have a laptop with Photoshop and Lightroom. I would like to be able to edit those same pictures with their current edits that are currently on my desktop on my laptop. If this can be done, I'm sure I need to be on the same wifi network for my laptop to be able to access my desktop's photo library. I am technically savvy enough to map a network drive, but how do I get my two Lightroom catalogs to sync when I make a change on one of my computers? Would i be working only on one catalog? Or two separate catalogs that would need to be manually synced to the other computer? Would it be beneficial to put my lightroom catalog on something like dropbox?
I'd appreciate any information or tutorials if someone knows how to do this.

I do this by having my LR catalog and photos on an external drive that I swap between the two computers.  I am on Windows and have the same drive letter assigned to the drive on both computers.
Because the photos are on a portable drive I back up the portable drive to another hard-drive every night or after important work, because portable drives are susceptible to damage or loss.

My assistant and I are using two Lightrooms (i.e. two serial numbers) and need to share between our two computers. I provide originals to her onto a flash drive. She tags them and returns them to me. I then copy the photos from her flash drive onto my computer and load them in my LR. The photos appear but witthout any editing or tagging. We need to be able to have her working on the photos on her computer with her copy of LR and me on my computer with my version of LR being able to access what is already tagged and given back to me. This seems hard. We need advice on if it is at all possible to have two computers simultaneously working on LR . I bought her her own version because I was told at the time of purchasing that that was the only way to share. Please advise urgently! Thanks.

Sounds like your assistant isn't instructing Lightroom to write the tagging and editing to the files themselves, so wehn the files return to you, they don't have editing and tagging information. She need to select the photos in Lightroom and then Ctrl-S (Cmd-S on Mac). Or alternatively turn on the option to autmoatically write this information to the files.
If you are using RAW photos, then this information will be written to a sidecar XMP file, and your assistant must provide you with the sidecar file. If these photos are not RAW photos, then the information is written directly into the photo file itself.
Lightroom wasn't designed to be a multi-user program, and so it is truly not possible to have two people working on the same catalog at once. The way you are doing things, as modified above, is probably the way to go.
As an alternative, you can transfer (portions of) catalogs as well as photos back and forth and then all of these issues disappear, but a catalog might be rather large for a flash drive (or maybe not, it depends)

  • Sync Lightroom between two (or more) computers. Why is it so complex?

I am a staunch fan of Lightroom (have 3.4) because of its versatility both for cataloguing and editing. One big minus however is the complexity of working in a networked/multicomputer environment.
Here is what I want: Just sync between a PC and a laptop, in such a way that what I do off-site on my laptop can be easily copied/synced to my PC and vice versa, including settings, collections etc..
My findings/experience thusfar with two options:
    NETWORKED
I am aware that the catalogue files cannot/will not work on a network drive (I have  Netgear NAS). Using the NAS as a central repository for all image files being  addressed by Local catalogues (resp. on my PC and laptop) works but is slow. Could be slow because of a slow Wifi connection between the laptop and NAS, which is normally not the case (I have n-network router..). Because of the often large RAW files I process this is not the preferred route. Since the .lrcat files and lrpreview files won’t work on the NAS, they need to be synced between PC and laptop anyhow. Same for any LR settings that may change during processing.
    GO BETWEEN HDD DRIVE
Since I avail of a nippy Diginote 2.5” HDD box filled with a 320 Gb SATA drive with both USB 2.0 and e-SATA I followed Scott Kelby’s advice to use it as a go-between.
    I took the following steps:
    1.       Copy over all image files, lrcat, lrpreview and Lightroom settings (set in LR preferences to be with catalogue in one folder) from my Laptop data drive Photo folder to the Diginote HDD
Obviously (was it?) the copied lrcat file  (still) pointed to the Laptop datadrive folder so I changed it to  point to the Photofolder  on the Diginote
    2.       I created a new folder with new catalogue, etc. on my PC and imported the lrcat and all files from the Diginote  into this new PC catalogue. All well but the LR settings (includes my web gallery settings) were not copied over! Had to do manually..
    3.       Next I edited photos, created new collections, made new virtual copies and rated images on the Diginote.
    4.       Thent imported the (updated) lrcat from the Diginote into the PC catalogue. All well, modification and virtual copies now included in the PC catalogue.
However no sign of the new collections even after copying over the LR settings!!! They are clearly not included in the settings.
So  Ref 2 and 4, I am a bit  a loss where the Collection settings are saved. Anyone with an answer?
    5.       Since the Diginote in this setup is the “policeman” and I rather be safe than sorry I copied back/backed-up the Diginote folder to my laptop. Lo and behold! Guess what I see, the Local lrcat points to the local datadrive and all new collections etc are nicely shown. It seems a "simple" windows back up transfers the Collection data whereas a LR managed export/import action does not
Questions: What is good or bad in this procedure and why are the collection settings behaving so oddly? QQ where are they filed?
Think that ADOBE should come up with a no nonsense program option to sync between at least two computers or make things work in a network. I can’t be the only one with a similar setup.

    Dear Sprengel,
Followed your advice. Works wonders! Thanks a million

So don't remeber if she gave me a didferent one or maybe I didn't register it. But it says it's invalid.
This is getting murky. If you have the original CD then is the serial number on it or on it's packaging? Are you saying an Adobe rep gave you a second serial number? And that one is not working? My guess is that the Adobe rep gave your something other than a serial number (which is why it's not working) and expected you to enter the one you already had from your CD or packaging.

Both my wife and I are keen Photographic Club members.   We both possess a computer and each have a different email address but we are part of the same household,   We are considering renting Photoshop and Lightroom on a monthly basis.   Do we each have to pay the monthly subscription i.e. twice the amount, or because it is one household, are we allowed to install the programs on two computers with a single monthly payment?

    William,
Topic or subject titles should be clear, pertinent and concise so that individual users can tell at a glance if they can help or not.
Remember, you are not addressing Adobe here in the user forums.  You are requesting help from volunteers users just like you who give their time free of charge. No one has any obligation to answer your questions.
That field is not for attempting to fit your entire question in there.
Please keep this in mind next time you post.  Thank you.

  • Using Lightroom on a Cloud with Two Computers / Different Cities

I would like to use Lightroom on two Macs in two different cities.  What I would like to do is move photo files to a Cloud system such as Dropbox work with them on a computer in city A then travel to city B and work on them with a different computer.  I think this is possible if I also place the .ircat file for the pictures I'm working with in the same folder / Cloud system.  Will this work?  Thanks

They've always been separate and I agree he doesn't have to sync them
Yes, the previews themselves have always been separate from the catalog. But the "preview directory", i.e. the database tables that linked the images with their preview files, has been inside the catalog until LR3.
That created a bit of a trouble for those that had a "copy entire catalog" workflow, the OP was talking about. Namely, even if you had all previews built on both machines, copying a catalog from machine A, invalidated the preview cache on machine B, since the "preview tables" were now pointing to different preview files. And we now that building a new cache takes many hours.
Thankfully, in LR3 those tables had been moved to a separate SQLite database (previews.db file in the root of the preview cache).
