Sylpheed-claws

After updating a load of stuff through pacman, xfce4, kernel...etc it appears that sylpheed-claws doesn't work anymore...I dunno if sylpheed-claws got updated. The error message is this. Haven't seen a shared library error for a while.
sylpheed-claws: error while loading shared libraries: libpisock.so.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Just gonna see if sylpheed still works

Hi,
let's consolidate your points a bit here. First sarahs reply from the other
thread:
sarah31 wrote:personally i like the lightness of sylpheed-claws and was very disappointed when the previous (maintainer) forced users to swallow fancy apps for function many of us may not need.
i would say though asking here would only give you a small unbalanced set of opinions. maybe see what other distros do if it appears to be a common add on then by all means included it.
it might give me an unbalanced set, but it gives me the opinion of the arch
users. It's also my job to go with them as far as possible.
sarah31 wrote: it would be nice if it could be more of a modular function (*can* make use of jpilot stuff if the user has one and jpilot stuff is installed but not  force a user without one to have to swallow depends they may not want)
problem with that will be that I don't have the possibility to extend
dependencies due to the requested options. A wy around might be to make
an sylpheed-claws and a sylpheed-claws-extension package. Though I
don't like to split up too much for terms of simplicity.

used to love using sylpheed-claws but then the maintainers started enabling a whole pile of stuff that many users do not even use.
I see your point, but sylpheed-claws is supposed to be the bleeding edge version of sylpheed. One aspect of its functionality is its cooperation with and use of many other different individual apps [eg dillo, clam av etc]. I don't find this annoying. Pilot-link is just one more that is useful to a potentially high percentage of users [but not to me]. If one wants a "nice small little app", then one should use sylpheed instead.
The problem with sylpheed-claws and functionality is, that many things are
not in the libs but in the binary itself. So I will fiddle with it a bit an will
so what can be done. So far I will leave out jpilot.

  • [SOLVED] Problem with gtkhtml2 plugin for Sylpheed-Claws

    Running Sylpheed-Claws 2.5.3 from [extra] repo.
    Built sylpheed-claws-gtkhtml2-plugin 0.10.2-1 from AUR. Build seemed to go fine, plugin installed with 'pacman -A sylpheed-claws-gtkhtml2-plugin 0.10.2-1.pkg.tar.gz' and seemed OK.
    When I try to load the plugin into Sylpheed-Claws I get the following error:
    Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Bob

    Found the problem, it was a PEBKAC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PEBKAC) issue <sigh>.
    Things worked so much better after I cleared the cache in Firefox. Then I was able to download the NEW package. The build and install went fine after that.
    Thnaks for your help Tomas....sorry to bother you with my mistakes.

    Hey Snowman, thank you for the reply.
    How do I go about that? Do I edit the PKGBUILD?
    I've never done that. Everything I do is by trial and error and I usually break things.
    Thank you again
    Here's an easy way to recompile it:
    * run `abs' as root
    * copy the directory /var/abs/extra/network/sylpheed-claws to some place you have write access to (/tmp or /var/abs/local for example)
    * cd into that directory and run `makepkg'
    * install the resulting package with pacman: `pacman -U sylpheed-claws-version.pkg.tar.gz'

  • XFCE4 & Preferred Applications; Mail reader 'claws mail' wont open

    Configuring my XFCE4 setup I wanted to set Claws Mail as my standard mail client, such that when I open links in my browser pointing to mail addresses (mailto:[email protected]) that specified mail clilent automatically opens and lets me type my mail right away.
    Now... that doesn't work. First Sylpheed Claws was set as my Mail Reader (apparently installing claws mails leads to two entries in the /usr/bin, one for Claws Mail and one for Sylpheed Claws). I switched to Claws Mail, and... it doesnt work.
    So, what is there to do about this issue? Any workarounds?
    I am using Epiphany as my browser, if that's relevant.
    Ah, I also wanted to track this problem down by opening Epiphany in the terminal and see what happens (error messages that is). But it won't open in the shell. I start it, it runs, but there is nothing printed in the prompt (if I close the terminal again, epiphany stays open). Can I force it to run inside the shell?

    Although the post is quite old -- I have the same problems using awesome window manager, epiphany browser and claws-mail.
    If someone still uses Epiphany with webkit see
    http://www.mail-archive.com/epiphany-li … 03090.html
    For epiphany 2.30 I tried
    $ mkdir -p ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/mailto
    $ gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/mailto/command -t string 'claws-mail --compose %s'
    $ gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/mailto/enabled -t bool true
    But it won't work ;-( Has anyone ideas?

      Opening
    Welcome to the Arch Linux Newsletter. This attempts to give you an ``at
    a glance'' look at the world of Arch Linux.
      News
        This Week in Dev Land
       1. Dale has received a script to let firebird and thunderbird play
          nice. He's looking at adding them now.
       2. Arjan is busy right now. Everyone else is trying to pick up his
          slack.
       3. Functional specifications are nearly complete for the new AUR system.

      Discussions
        Forum Highlights
       1. Benedict_White has been working on porting Webmin to Arch. Check
          on his progress in this thread:
          http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=5042.
       2. DP has solved the GL.la problem that has plagued many users. He
          has provided a simple file to install on your system to replace
          the missing library. Read the thread here:
          http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=5124.
        Mailing List Highlights
       1. The debate was raised again about packaging quality. Jlowell
          criticized the developers, stating that there have been too many
          broken packages. More of the same points were raised, including
          having the developers focus more on developing the base, and less
          on the packaging. Read the whole thread here:
          http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch … 01625.html.
       2. I semi-seriously asked about the possibility of bittorrent
          integration with pacman. It would save the developers bandwidth
          and give the users a way to contribute. There would be many
          technical issues with a bittorrent system. Read the thread here:
          http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch … 01670.html.
       3. tsykoduk asked about adding changelogs to the packages or
          PKGBUILDs. It was decided that the CVS changelogs were sufficient.
          Read the thread here:
          http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch … 01647.html.
      Packages
        Package Highlights
       1. KDE 3.2.3 was packaged this week. This should fix most of the
          problems people have been having with KDE. Read the announcement

      Problems
        FAQ
    Q: I'm trying to compile something (in C++), but I'm getting random errors.
    A: Arch is using GCC 3.4.0. GCC 3.4 is much stricter when it comes to
    C++ code. It will break on many more errors than GCC 3.3. You should
    email the developers of the broken application, or check their
    CVS/mailing list to see if they have provided patches.

    We're thinking about changing the format of the newsletter. Now that
    Arch has an official HTML/CSS standard for documentation, it seems
    appropriate to move the newsletter to that standard. We can convert the
    newsletter to plain TXT for email, though it may lose some formatting.
    How do you read the newsletter? If many people read it over email, we
    will continue to provide email ``delivery'' along with HTML, but if most
    people read it over the web, we will cut the email delivery. Please give
    us your feedback. What is the most convenient format for the newsletter?
    That's it for this week, stay tuned for more exciting Arch Linux news.

    Haven't seen pacman kick an error out like this before and I'm looking for some next steps.
    Thanks.

    Step 1. Search and read the forums for similar error solutions before posting.
    Step 2. If nobody have done it so far file a bug report http://bugs.archlinux.org. (Hint: use pacman -Qo path_to_the_file_in_question to check what package owns this file - do this before step 3).
    Step 3. Force an upgrade by adding f option to pacman options.

  • Usr/local/bin...or where?

    hey guys,
    I just made a package of sylpheed claws 2.00.  Everything went ok, but the binary was placed in /usr/local/bin.  For reasons I don't quite understand, this is not an arch-like place to be.  So where should I put it, and how should I modify my pkgbuild to put it there?
    btw, here's the fairly plain pkgbuild;
    pkgname=sylpheed-claws
    pkgver=2.0.0
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="The stable extended version of sylpheed"
    url="http://claws.sylpheed.org/"
    licence=""
    depends=(pkgconfig libetpan)
    makedepends=()
    conflicts=()
    replaces=()
    backup=()
    install=
    source=(http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/sylpheed-claws/$pkgname-$pkgver.tar.gz)
    md5sums=('7ddfc626484ae0954a78c5233931e21a')
    build() {
    cd $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver
    ./configure --with-gtk2
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install
    also, what forum should I have posted this to?
    thanks!

    Well ... it CAN be set to anywhere you like, but compliance with the Arch Packaging Standards would be preferable - or mandatory, if you want to submit your PKGBUILD to the AUR. A quick read of the AUR User Guidelines would also be useful in that case.
    General hints -
    ./configure --help
    will give you all the options for most apps. The ABS wiki pages provide the Arch-specific stuff.

  • Which email client / solution do you use?

    I was wondering what email client is everybody using out there. Just got a new computer and am setting up arch on it. I've used evolution, thunderbird, and elm and pine (way back in the day). I'm a recent KDE convert from gnome (no thoughing rotten veggies please and was wondering what experiences people have had with kmail. Also, it seems that thunderbird is the only one with build in spam filtering. I got inordenate amounts of this stuff so that was nice while i was using. I used to do the whole fetchmail / procmail / spamassassin / sendmail thing when i was using redhat. Anyway, just wondering if anybody had any suggestions and what works best form them?

    scottro wrote:
    hrrm--the obvious questions, do you have the browser set up in the configuration file?
    It may just be in sylpheed-claws (which is what I have in FreeBSD.
    The command (in the "other" section of Common Preferences is
    opera -remote 'openURL(%s, new-window)'
    Again, this was Sylpheed-claws.  However, I vaguely remember that it would work, you'd just have to click a few times.

    Scott
    Ah yes, I suppose i should use claws instead. But thats not in pacman. Bah. Oh well

  • Xfce4 users please report

    i'm thinking of making a switch from gnome to xfce4 and would like to know what file manager, terminal, archive manager (if any) and e-mail client you people are using. i'm asking xfce4 users b/c i'd like to stay gtk if possible.

    OK,
    mail-client: sylpheed-claws(gtk2-version from testing since it is really usable and feels even better that the old gtk1 version), it's the only that configurable GUI client I know. Mainly I'm using muttng now, cuz I need a console program running on the server. The shortcoming of gtk2 sylpheeds is that you're condemende to use MH.
    file-manager: ROX - cuz I use it for years, the only nice feature of xffm is the smb browser imho
    term: since ALL gtk2 based terms are really memory junkies, I prefer mlterm, which basically has a gtk2 canvas and a gtk2 config-gui, but it uses way less memory, especcially if you run it as a deamon
    Archive manager: well, this is where things suck. Sometimes I end up using file-roller(which is heavy gnome) the next in line is midnight commander. Thes are the only apps you can use to browse through your archives. Someone really should write a gtk2 based app for that. Or does onyone know of such a thing? (there is a pygtk based rox-archiver which can be used for zip/unzpping, but not browsing)

  • [Solved] Some question's about mutt.

    Hello!
    I searched for a nice e-mail client and  I found mutt it's really nice but here's some question's...
    1.What about images in post's and how would they will be open?
    2.Does muttt support Unicode (UTF-8)?
    Thtat's all for now!
    BTW.If somone has better proposition for a mail client please post (except KMail and Thunderbird).
    Last edited by SpeedVin (2010-07-30 11:01:12)

    1) mutt uses .mailcap to specify what applications to use to open up attachments (all images in emails are attachments).
    2) Yes. You may want to search the mutt mail archives for specifics (I know it's come up on there quite a bit). mutt will use the charset specified in the email itself, and you can set the "assumed_charset" variable to handle emails that don't specify it.

    EDIT Jason beat me to it - and I forgot the FAQ.
    Also, if you like minimalist, try nmh (don't know if it's in AUR).
    Oh and many people like Claws email (and/or Sylpheed Claws). I thnk that's the nicest of the GUI clients that I've looked at.

  • Moving from thunderbird to [suggestion?]

    OK; so I'm finally having beagle up and running, but it doesn't index my emails since there's no support for thunderbird (at least yet). Does anyone feel like suggesting an email client, (and perhaps how a moveover is done bestly ) ?
    Cheers!

    I can't seem to leave my Thunderbird.  ;-)  With all of the Extensions, I can have it do just about anything I want.
    I've been running a couple others kinda in parallel to see if I can move away from TB at some point.  I tried Sylpheed and Sylpheed-Claws but seem to prefer Evolution or Kmail as the alternative.
    My main reason for testing other options besides TB has been palm integration.  I keep hopeing that Mozilla will get SunBird developed a little better and integrate Palm in it at some point.
    My wife likes Kmail/Kontact.  She used ThunderBird for quite a while and then tried Evolution, but she's finally settled on Kmail.
    As to the best way to migrate to a different client:  I just export everything from ThunderBird and then import into the others.

    I can write using this command :
    cdrecord speed=44 dev=ATAPI:0,0,0 file.iso
    ide-scsi module is loaded :
    [root@boss dev]# lsmod | grep ide
    ide-scsi               10576   0
    scsi_mod               90624   3  [sr_mod sg ide-scsi]
    [root@boss dev]#
    How do I get cdrecord to grab the IDE emulation ?

    Yeah, like zen_guerrilla said.  What's happening is when your machine is booting the ide-cd built in module is grabbing your cd drive.  By specifying that option to your bootloader you're telling the kernel to load the ide-scsi module for hdx.

  • Hal wont eject [SOLVED]

    Hi guys,
    When i insert a cd its automounted and the cd icon is displayed on my desktop (xfce)
    When i press the eject button i get this error:
    Failed to eject "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_RW/DVD_GCC_4480B".
    Given device "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_RW/DVD_GCC_4480B" is not a volume or drive
    But if i right click on the icon and click eject, it works fine.
    Anyone any ideas?
    Ive tried both with and without the following in /etc/fstab
    #/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    however if i unmount /dev/sr0 manually, i can then eject it with the button.
    Thanks
    Kane

    You'll have to copy the entire exo directory from the ABS tree though, because you'll also need exo.install file from there as well.
    So does this mean I have to copy all of this into one dir then use package build please forgive this ?

    Archlinux Weekly Newsletter
    *Jason Chu and Ben Mazer*
      Opening
    Welcome to the ArchLinux Newsletter. This attempts to give you an ``at a
    glance'' look at the world of ArchLinux.
      News
    /No front page news this week/
        This Week in Dev Land
        * ArchLinux has an IRC bot. It's name is archbot. It's an infobot
          (http://www.infobot.org/). Right now we're testing it to see if it
          can help answer some of the simpler questions on IRC.
        * Damir has suggested we start having incoming-cleanup waves: where
          the oldest packages in incoming can be talked about and dealt
          with. It was suggested that he take the idea to the TUs, because
          it's more their job now. Developers will still join the discussion
          though.
        * Aurelien found a bug in our db update scripts and blew up the
          package database. A number of packages were accidently orphaned
          because of this. If anyone sees packages that used to be adopted
          by one of the developers, feel free to bring it to their attention.

      Discussions
        Forum Highlights
        * Drz wanted to know if all the 0.6 packages were compiled with
          GCC3.3.3 (the included compiler). The answer was no. Arch uses a
          rolling release cycle where the ISO releases are just snapshots of
          the current tree. The focus is on making the trees perfect, not
          making a good CD release. Read the thread
          here:http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=3155
        * LB06 posted his suggestion for the /opt folder. He did not like
          the idea of separate binary folders. The thread turned into a
          debate with no clear answer. Some people suggested that it helped
          organization, and others did not care either way. Participate in
          the thread here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=3084
        * Rasat made a request for a web downloading interface to the TUR
          system. Xentac, the TUR developer was against this idea, because
          the goal with the TUR system was to interface with pacman. This
          way users wouldn't have to manually update packages themselves.
          The suggestion is still being discussed, so participate here:
          http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=3191.
        Mailing List Highlights
        * Brent Pitman wanted to know if it was possible to have pacman
          automatically update (unattended). There were a few solutions
          including a cron script and simply yes| pacman -Syu. This is not
          recommended though, because you may want to be notified of
          important package updates. Read the thread here:
          http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch … 01075.html
          TUR Mailing List
    The TUR system has been completely redone. The web interface has now
    been replaced with a SFS/Subversion combination. This system will scale
    much better and is hosted on the ArchLinux servers now. Because of the
    downtime, many packages became out of date. Please be patient while the
    TUs adjust to the new system and update packages. Please note that the
    mailing list address has changed to this:
    [email protected].
      Packages
        Package Highlights
        * KDE 3.2.1 was released and packaged this week. This is an
          important bugfix release, so all KDE users should upgrade. You can
          read the announcement here:
          http://kde.org/announcements/announce-3.2.1.php
        * XFCE 4.0.4 was released this week. This is a bugfix release as
          well, and all XFCE users should upgrade. The changelog is located
          here:

      Problems
        FAQ of the Week
    Q: I'm having a problem. What should I do, where should I turn? Help me!
    A: ArchLinux has many places you can turn for help. First, you should
    try reading the many forms of documentation. Arch has a nicely filled
    WIKI available at http://wiki.archlinux.org/. There are a set of guides
    located here: http://www.archlinux.org/docs/.
    If your question wasn't answered in the documentation, you can
    search/post in the forum located at http://bbs.archlinux.org or you can
    catch people in our IRC room located at irc.freenode.net #archlinux.
    Lastly, you can join the mailing list, located at:
    http://www.archlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/arch/.
    So you see, you are not alone with a problem. Although this may not seem
    like a FAQ, we are receiving lots of questions from distressed newcomers.
