Synaptic driver spooks with Dell Precision M6600 touchpad.
I'm lost for words on this one, meaning I'm not quite sure how to best describe this or title the problem.
But for lack of words I recorded the odd issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JXaUnWA1Rk
In short what's happening is whenever i try to move the mouse on the X axis, it usually just picks up the slight Y axis movements and the burst all of the X movements right as "one input" making the cursor jump to the right edge of the screen.
And sometimes it moves slightly to the left and right when i fiddle on the touchpad as if it were locked within 20 pixels and then after a second or so of fiddling it "Unlocks" and i can move it as per normal.
So fiddling a bit "unlocks" it and i can use it as per normal, until i lift the finger.. then i have to re-do it again. Any ideas?
(Plugging in a external mouse works, but i'm traveling constantly and every now and then i'm only away for a day or so and i skip the external mouse.. or i just forget to pack it..)

Try to boot with a live CD/DVD system and see if you don't have a hardware issue.
If the machine worked for a couple of days and if it works sometimes, that seems a hardware problem to me.

I did install psmouse-alps-driver since a thread mentioned it might solve the issue but now i don't even see the TouchPad which showed up as ALPS DualPoint TouchPad and now i'm afraid of how i should go about to remove the driver and the kernel modules that were installed with the AUR package (will it remove the kernel parameters etc automaticly or will i have to dig in and if so where to begin?)Your friends don't know what they're talking about. SL is quite good... far better than Leopard in my experience. The issue is that many people have systems that get screwed up a little bit, and then they install some major update, and suddenly a slightly screwed up system becomes badly screwed up. (Imagine building a second floor on a house with undiscovered structural defects.) This is often unfairly blamed on system updates... if you rely on word of mouth, every version of the Mac OS ever has been the worst ever.
Of course, I've got no experience with Autodesk. Perhaps Autodesk has issues with SL, if your friends are all using it and having problems. SL did change a lot under the hood, so older software may be incompatible with it. -

To reinforce what was mentioned in the first response...
There is no "urgent" in these forums and your statement that everyone must jump to your request just because you say so is rude.
You have been a viewer of these user-to-user OTN forums for more than a year. That is far long enough to know better.
For the future, whenever you have a critical business need for information, you will need to use your support credentials and log a SR ro Oracle Technical Support. Be prepared each time to prove to them that such a need exists. -
Dell Precision M6600 with internal display + 2 external
The only answer I found for this issue was from 2 years ago and the options arent the same anymore.
I want to connect 2 external monitors through a dell pros2x docking station while using the laptops display.
1 monitor works fine but the second one will not display a picture. the PC recognizes it but the display wont appear. Ive adjusted resolution and restarted the PC several times.
I am using a DVI port for the first monitor and a display port to DVI adaptor for the second monitor.
I also tried running the monitor from the laptops e-port via display to DVI adaptor.
Can someone help or send me to a thread that answers this question?

I already own an old MacBook Pro running Core 2 Duo processor and have no problems with it. I was told by my friends not to go with the new Snow Leopard Operating system as they crash often and produce very slow performance. I am not sure if they will resolve all these issues in Lion. I do intensive work on Adobe and Autodesk products and I require an extremely fast processor, best display, and graphics card. If I choose MBP, I will take the anti-glare screen as I also do desktop publishing. I also don't understand why Apple doesn't ship their MacBook Pro's with Nvidia Quadro or ATI FireGL pro graphics cards. I was told that they are better cards for working with Pro apps. Are there any benefits of choosing Quadro or FireGL instead of GeForce or Radeon. I also saw the comments at Apple store and almost all have given the least possible rating to Quadro cards for Mac Pro. I don't wanna spend money unnecessarily if there will be problems with compatibility and I am also considering if I should switch to a PC as Snow Leopard is very slow. I also wonder how the gaming performance is in the Pro GPU's.

Dell Precision M6600 monitor no longer working...
Hello!
The monitor display has suddenly stopped working on my laptop. The computer boots up but the monitor remains completely black. I attached a second monitor via the VGA on the back and everything shows up and performer normally on that second monitor... so it is clearly the monitor on the laptop that isn't working.
I have not dropped or banged the computer around at all nor have I spilled any liquid on it... so I really have no idea why it isn't working or how to fix the problem.
Any ideas?
By the way, I am running Windows 7... not sure if that's relevant.Hi there,
I have already gone through some of the tips shown in the vid below but up to now I haven't acheived a thing.

Hi, I’ve recently bought two : CT2571869 CT102464BF160B.M16FA2 8GB DDR3 UPGRADE FOR A DELL PRECISION M6600 (2 SODIMMS) SYSTEM As I installed them on my laptop (Dell Precision M6600 2 sodimm slots - 2012 ) it started to have system crash more times per day. Machine works and suddendly I get blue screen (SYSTEM FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA) or system completely locks.I also tried to install just one RAM (8GB) with the same result. Reinstalling the original RAM (2 x Samsung 2GB M471B5773DH0-CH9) , laptop returns to work well.I have run either the Dell memory tests and the Linux 'mem test', they cannot find any problem. I suspect that RAMs, differently by what you stated on your site, are not compatible with my laptop. What do you suggest ? There is a possible solution or I have to send them back ? Thanks, Mamas
Hello,
Thanks for contacting us today. It appears that the memory you purchased is correct for the Dell Precision M6600 and that we have had a very low return rate on this module. I would suggest checking to see if the system may be in need of a BIOS update. The system is a few years old and that can sometimes be the issue. If you are still experiencing issues, please give us a call. We would be happy to troubleshoot further and set up a return if necessary. Our contact information can be found in my signature.

Struggling with a Dell Precision T3600, Boot Image does not see Hard drive.
Hi
I recently got a lab of 25 of these stations in and shortly I will be imaging them. I am using the Boot Image (x86) the ones that come with sccm 2012 and I downloaded the sccm driver cab from dell and imported the storage and raid drivers into the
boot image, yet every time I boot winpe to try to image the machine no hard drive is found.
I followed this thread at Dell
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/disk-drives/f/3534/t/19460505.aspx
and seeming all these drivers are in the boot image (x86)
Intel(R) C600/X79 series chipset 6-Port SATA AHCI Controller - 1D02
Intel(R) C600 Series Chipset SAS RAID Controller
PERC H310 for Dell Precision
and still now hard drive seen when I boot winpe via sccm pxe.
Does anyone have any of these machines, or any advice for me I REALLY need to solve this, I been struggling for a day so far and getting nowhere fast.
ThanksAre you using the correct driver for the version of WINPE you are using?

Cannot get ALPS touchpad on Dell Precision M4400 to work reliably.
My Dell Precision M4400 (running Arch x86-64) has an ALPS touchpad which Xfce claims is a "AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad" and a pointer stick claimed to be a "DualPoint Stick" I have the synaptic touchpad drivers installed and xorg input hotplugging on, and it works 95% of the time reliably. However, rarely, a mouse button will either act wedged down or will not respond untill I hammer the other mouse buttons for a second or so. As well, no matter what I try, I cannot get the side of the mousepad to act as a scroll wheel.
The following is the contents of my HAL configuration for the mousepad at /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics.fdi . I got it online from a wiki posting it ( http://www.linlap.com/wiki/dell+precision+m4400 ), and it fixed an earlier problems with the mousepad settings resetting on resume from suspend-to-RAM (as it fell back to PS/2 mouse emulation, I think).

Dell Precision 690 - Problem with Power On Button
Hi
Over the last week or so the power on button on my Dell Precision 690 is starting to get more difficult to press. Today I cannot power on PC as it has become completely jammed. It looks like I am going to have to remove it. Does anybody know exactly how to do this as its not in any of the users documentation.
Would really appreciate any help as I need to get PC back up and running.
ThanksWhew! That was some kinda mess.
Basically what had happened was that the button is all plastic, and the plastic acts as a hinge and spring to push the button "rod" to make contact with the actual teeny tiny little micro switch. I started taking parts out, in the same process you'd use to replace the system board (that's on an "assembly"). At some point it looked like I could wiggle one of the plastic face plates that frames the CD/DVD drives out, and then I saw there was a second plastic plate around the power button and system lights. I bent that da*&^%ed stupid metal face plate after finding there were still 2 more screws that I couldn't reach, just enough to slip out the second facing, and then put the whole thing back together again, without the button installed. With no faceplate over the power switch, you can take a pencil, and use the eraser side to click the power switch on.
The machine is really pretty long in the tooth now, so we'll be working on a replacement soon!
Still, if I had been able to easily remove the other large black panel, things might have gone a lot smoother... Lousy design for that particular part of the unit... -
My new company installed Adobe Creative Cloud (There was some annoying Proxy issues at first, because of the seriously tight I.T policies) but we are having some serious resolution issues with After Effects CC 2014 (also have this resolution problem with Adobe Premiere, Media Encoder, Muse) on Windows 8.1 Pro on a Dell Precision M3800 laptop with icons and interface looking too small and hard to see, is there a fix, an update or a work around, can anyone help?
Any help will be appreciated!
k.regards
RamonHi Todd is there a time-frame for this fix, there is a lot of pressure on me, because I convinced my company to get the Creative Cloud and quite a lot of the CC software is not compatible with the latest Windows 8.1 OS.
Is there at least a work around, until this big fix comes along?
k.regards

I have no Audio in Firefox. I think this is an old problem with Dell IDT driver and Firefox. Flash is installed, I have uninstalled and re-installed two or three times, removed pluggins and put them back to no avail. The native win 7 driver from 2010 works okay in all browsers including firefox but I would like an up-to-date driver that works. The latest IDT driver for my Dell e6500 running Win 7 pro works great in IE and Chrome but not Firefox.
I don't think there was any setting I could change on the driver. Firefox did not show up in the mixer or volume control. It is there with the native win 7 driver. This driver doesn't seem to see Firefox. I just got this computer, but looking for help, posts three years ago on the web seemed to have this problem with the Dell e6500 and Firefox.

noapic
Note that I did NOT write noacpi, but noapic. See this thread:

**EDIT2** Actually, you might try noacpi and noapic, and then both at the same time considering your mention of acpi in your OP.

Sounds like you are in Canada.
Skip MSI; they have not been getting much of a reputation for solid, reliable, laptops for video editing.
Asus is selling rock-bottom priced laptops if you really need to cut cost to the bone.
My first choice recommendation would be to go with an ADK laptop. They are a audio/video editing centric company that has excellent laptops (Sager / Cleo platform) and excellent support for pretty decent prices on high-spec configurations. Unlike the HP/Dell laptops, their 15.6" 1980x1080 has expansion for multiple drives while retaining your optical bay.
HP and Dell are OK too, but more expensive for fully loaded configurations. Both companies provide a really nice base model, but then charge a lot for adding memory, drives, etc.
Dell provides really decent CPU choices, but you need to go to the "large business" section of their web site to see those CPU choices for the M4700.
If you go HP or Dell, get a newmodeus.com optical bay drive caddy to put a 2nd internal drive in your system. Buy the HP or Dell, then move the HD to the optical bay and buy a large SSD for OS, programs, and scratch/cache.

Dell Precision M4400 Windows 8.1 upgrade
I've been trying to upgrade my Dell Precision M4400 laptop to Windows 8.1 for hours now, with no success.
The installation completes, but right after loading the license agreement, the computer crashes with the infamous VIDEO_TDR error.
I had this problem years ago when I upgraded to Windows 7, and again with Windows 8.0. But I've always been able to at least boot to the desktop so I can turn off NVidia's lousy Powermizer "feature". With Windows 8.1, there's just no way for me to get that far. The laptop crashes, reboots, reverts back to Windows 8.0; leaving me annoyed, hopeless, and stuck trying again.
The VIDEO_TDR error has been a problem for several M4400 users for a while now; Dell needs to stop giving us to proverbial middle finger, and do something about it. After all, this was an expensive unit, and still has plenty of life left in it.
While I wait for them to get their act together. does anybody know how I can get Windows 8.1 into safe mode during the install process? (I tried holding shift and striking the F8 key during boot, but it just ignores me and continues the setup process)I ran into the same issue today when upgrading from Windows 8.0 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro.
Here is how I managed to get through the upgrade successfully, maybe the description helps others:
On the old OS (Windows 8) open Windows Explorer and go to options
Enable all options to see hidden and system files
Keep Windows Explorer open
Open an elevated command prompt and run the following command:
bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy
This enables the legacy F8 boot option in case the VGA boot has to be enforced later on in the process
Start the OS upgrade process from the Microsoft Store
When being prompted to restart the computer DO NOT restart
Change to the Windows Explorer Window and find a folder called "$Windows.~BT" which contains the Windows 8.1 setup files
Within that folder navigate to the "DUDownload" folder and find the "DUDriverUpdates": C:\$Windows.~BT\DUDownload\DUDriverUpdates
Within that folder delete the compressed file and the GUID name folder
The contains the latest nVidia driver that causes the blue screen
Complete the restart as requested by the Windows upgrade routine
Windows 8.1 will install with standard VGA support only
Once completed log on and download the "Powermizer" tool from here:
http://www.box.net/shared/v7jpoateoq
Download the latest Windows 8.1 drivers from the nVidia web site for the 9600M GT card
Install the drivers (I only installed the core drivers and no add on software from offered by the setup)
Run the "Powermizer" tool from an elevated command prompt and disable the power saving optionRestart the machine immediately when suggested by the "Powermizer"
If the machine crashes just restart, log on and run the too again from an elevated command prompt again
If it continues to crash force a "low resolution" boot by hitting F8 at the beginning of the boot phase and run the tool after having booted with the VGA driver
I tested full HD (1080p) video playback in battery and AC mode as well as resuming from sleep without any issues.
Thanks to the ones that posted here I was able to get this issue solved:
