Sync Folders on Multiple Mac

Hi,
I have a iMac and a Macbook pro. One of them I use for home & other at work. I have same user account for both mac's.  I have made 2 parition onto both of my mac just like how you have C & D drive in Windows. I save all my important documents in additional drive(paritioned drive) onto mac which has similar data on my MBP & iMac. Everytime I update those files I have to come home & update into those respected Mac's in order to maintain the latest versions of the doucments. I am looking for something that once I enter home after switching on my both the Mac through wireless it can either Syncronize the user account or the additional storage drive(created on both Macbook pro & iMac) just like how my address contact sync's through iCloud.
Please let me know if anybody could help me out.
Thanks in advance.
Jimmy

  • How do i sync iphone with multiple macs? and few questions

    Hi
I would appreciate if anyone would help me.
    1. I would like to know how to sync my iphone with different macs. I have a macbook 13 and a macbook 15 and would like to use BOTH to be able to transfer data without losing them. (address, apps, photos and music)
would like to use this feature if I were to be suddenly on a trip and a friend would like to share some of his files (audio, apps, photos..etc)
    2. is it possible to use internet tethering on multiple macs or example a "spontanious" mac? (ex. if I were suddenly to use internet through usb on a friends mac while we were on a trip but it were programmed on my mac at home)
    3. my internet tethering is only working on one mac which I usually use to sync everything... i tried just using tethering through usb on the other mac wihtout any sync but somehow it didnt work... usually i just plug and play and start using firefox... by automatic detection...
    4. is there also a way to copy files from iphone onto a mac which would not be one of my libraries?
    5. why cant i use iphone like the ipod as a disk use?
I am aware that these things are somewhat possible because i have read quiet a few artivles but they are sadly enough not so current... any help appreciated.

#1: As has been said, you can't get around it. An iPhone cannot be synched to more than one computer for any media content (it can be for contacts and calendar information, I believe).
#4: You can transfer items purchased from the iTunes Store to another computer but only if you disallow synchronization and authorize that computer to your iTunes Store account. There are third-party utilities that can transfer non-iTunes Store content.
#5: there is no disk mode in an iPhone and no way to enable one, at least not in the sense of disk mode in earlier iPods. There are third-party apps that allow some file transfer to and from an iPhone.
I can't help with tethering questions.

  • Syncing contacts over multiple macs

I'm linking up multiple macs and one iphone and syncing through icloud. the calendars work. but the contacts are not syncing. the laptop has old contacts that i need to update to the main computer contacts.
Any ideas on what I'm not doing or why they are not syncing?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
This user tip might help you understand how accounts work with Contacts (Address Book).
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

  • Sharing folders across multiple Macs

Other than an old post about now-defunct iDisk, I don't seem to easily find an answer to this on the boards so am posting my own question.
I have two Macs – an old MBPro and a newer iMac. The laptop cannot run Mountain Lion as it's too old; both devices now run Lion. Now I want to solve document sharing issues so I don't have to manually manage synchonization.
I want the content of certain folders on my iMac to be available to both devices (and preferable my iPad/iPhone as well) anywhere I go and have Internet access. Lacking Internet access, I want the last synced version available, and when I'm online again, any changes will be synced back to the cloud.
I have iCloud service (25GB for $40/year) as well as 100GB Dropbox subscription that costs me $120/year.  I don't think I need both(?)  Using more iCloud storage means that I'd pay $100/year for just 50GB.  So it seems Dropbox is the better deal at least space-for-money-wise.  The initial folder I want to share is about 7GB but I can see this growing as I sync more things.
I cannot see using simple file sharing from the iMac as it isn't always running; that is, it might be asleep or even powered off.
Anyone willing to share the "best practice" approach to getting this done in a secure way that doesn't have me worrying about some third-party accessing all the documents?
    Thank you in advance.

You can use Sugarsync for this, it is free (up to 5GB) and inexpensive if 5G is insufficient.
Once installed you can choose any combination of folders from one machine for replication on another. Changes made on either machine are reflected on the other. It will work on Macs, PC's IOS and Android devices.

  • Sync folders between two Macs

    Howdy,
I want Mail on two of my Macs to be in sync. I have a lot of rules set up and once the rules are applied the mail is sorted in local folders so it disappears from the inbox. This of course causes it to no longer be available on the other Mac.
Looking for an application that can sync files I select between two Macs whenever a change is detected on either of them, in this case my Mail folder and peferences. This can go directly or through an OS X server that's running 24/7. I don't want to move my folders to the mailserver but keep them local.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

I've had a Macbook Pro for about a year and a half and love it so much that this Christmas I decided to buy myself a second Mac. I got a refurbished 24 inch iMac and just set it up last night. During the setup it occurred to me that there are certain folders on both computers (documents, pictures, audio, downloads, etc) that I would like to have available and synchronized between both computers. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to do this. Does this functionality exist in Snow Leopard?
no. not unless you want to use a command line tool like rsync.
If not, are there any 3rd party apps that will solve my problem?
you can use Chronosync or ForkLift. also, you can sync not directly between computers but via a cloud. there are many services that do that. there is apple's own mobileme. another very popular one is DropBox.

  • Syncing phone with multiple macs

I have two macs - and I keep all my music on one and all my calendars on the other. Can I sync my iPhone with both?
    I'm afraid to try...

Don't know about Macs, but with PCs you can. I have my calendar info on my work PC, and my music on my home PC. I had to intall iTunes on my work PC (I am sure IT will be thrilled), and synced up only selected items, and selected all the Outlook stuff and nothing else. I then hooked up to my Home PC. I got a message that the iPhone was synced with another library, and that it would be erased. Oh well, tried it anyway. On my home PC I also selected sync only selected items, but unchecked all the Outlook stuff and checked Music. It worked!
Apparently the warning message relates to the iTunes music library being erased and synced with only one PC, but apparently that does not affect the Outlook data.

  • Sync iCal with multiple Mac systems - How to ?

I have created a system over the years that finally worked for me using my Palm. I use missing sync and will sync my iCal at my office Mac and also at my home Mac. This way if over the weekend or anywhere else in-between my schedule changes, everything gets updated.
It also helps that I use .Mac to sync everthing in-between the computers as well.
So... I am now taking the plung into the iPhone... but I want to set this up correctly.
I cannot only sync my schedule at work OR home. Too much changes throughout the week for me. I also rely on syncing things on Sunday evening and then using .Mac to publish it around to various people (I am using the Mac technology as it was intented to be used!)
Since it appears that syncing is only acheived via iTunes and not using iSync, how can I acheive this?
Or could I use iSync via Bluetooth???
The ONLY thing I really need to sync on the work computer is the iCal ...everything else can sync at the home computer (well I would like to sync other items from time to time, but I can live with this solution if I have to!)
I am also concerned reading here what appears to tell me that I can only have one calendar... again I am a busy person who receives .Mac feeds with other people's iCals and sometimes has them sync and I currently have them sync to my Palm lifedrive (all color coded to clarify).
I really hope that going "all Mac" will be easier and simler than the cobbled together mess that I finally created over the years with the Palm with my macs. My wife and I finally know what each other's schedule is!
    any thoughts?
    thanks
    Rich

I see what you are saying and understand how allowing .mac to update the other computers will work.
But what will update the iPhone until I reach the office computer (say I sync at the offic, I just updated things on the home computer, synced via .mac so things are OK for the computers, and it is the Friday evening... )
I will have a couple of days of outdated schedule in my pocket until Monday.
I want to keep a current iCal on my iPhone.
    Is this possible?

  • Sync iCal across multiple macs WITHOUT internet

Here is something for the experts out there...
I have a Mac at home, with my iCal.
I have a Mac at work, with an iCal.
How do i get these two computers to sync back and forth WITHOUT using the internet (i don't have the NET at home)...
I can sync my iPOD to my home calander, but when i get to work, it doesn't matter, because i would need my WORK computer to sync to my iPOD's calander, then i can update my work, put it BACK onto my iPOD and then do the same at home, but there doesn't seem to be this feature.. i need to be able to alter calander files and take them with me...

Interesting, never knew there was an iCloud website.  Ironically, it wouldn't open in Safari (just got a spinning progress wheel), but it opened up fine in Chrome.  :/
So, I logged into iCloud under my wife's Apple ID, clicked on the calendar icon, then clicked on those icons to the right of the two calendars shown (Home and Work), selected Private Calendar, and added my email address which is linked to my Apple ID. I hoped that would do the trick to allow me to see her calendar entries in iCal in my account, but it didn't.
Am I correct that the process outlined above should display my wife's entries onto my iCal calendar?  Or do I need to go view her calendar online somewhere instead of seeing the entries on my own iCal calendar?

  • Sync outlook on multiple macs

I have 2 Airs. I use one at work and one at home. I use Office 11 on both macs and use Outlook for emails. Problem is when I move emails to subfolders at work computer, and open my home computer, all emails end up coming back to my inbox. I cannot seem to keep both Airs synced at folder level. Inbox is only where the sync. Any advise?

That is standard Outlook behaviour with subscription accounts, such as iCloud. There is no workaround unless you dump Outlook, or iCloud. I would dump Outlook, it's awful unless you have an Exchange account.

  • Sync iPhone on Multiple Macs

I have switched my Mac Mini from home to use as my office CPU. I was using my MB Pro and had used that to sync my iPhone with. Now I want to sync iPhone with my Mini. I am aware that you can only use one iTunes Lib to sync with and that will be fine. I have the same pics and tunes on this mini but I would hate to have to redo all of my contacts ring tones and pics that are set up as well as the home screen. Is there a way to back up my phone and sync to another Itunes Lib? I am looking for any way not to have to erase my phone and start all over again. I would appreciate any help available.

As long as your second Mac has 1 Contact in Address Book, and 1 Calender event in iCal, When you go to Sync you should get an option to merge. And it will ensure iPhone Data and iCal and Address Book Data Match.
Please also ensure you got all your Apple Software Updates and Latest version of iTunes before you do this. Also if your not sure what a message means when it pops up Please call 1-800-My-iPhone for assistance and they will assist with this as well.
Please also ensure you backup Address Book and iCal before you Sync. So you got the latest Backup of both those Programs if needed.
To Backup Address Book on Leopard, Launch Address Book and go to "File - Export - Address Book Archive"
To Backup iCal on Leopard, Launch iCal and go to "File - Backup iCal"
To Backup Address Book on Tiger, Launch Address Book and go to "File - Backup Address Book"
To Backup iCal on Tiger, Launch iCal and go to " File Backup Database"

  • Sync iCal with multiple Macs using Dropbox?

I recently purchased an old PowerBook G4 (as in, Mini-VGA old) to take with me to class for note taking. I was hoping to be able to sync my main iCal from my Mac (unibody MacBook Pro, pre-Thunderbolt) to my "new" PowerBook G4. It would really be easiest if i could use iCloud, I know, but my PowerBook is running OS X 10.5.8, so no iCloud there.
I Googled my issue, and quickly found Wired's How-To Wiki page "Sync Your Life with Dropbox" (http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Sync_Your_Life_With_Dropbox), which has you, using Terminal, move your iCal calendar files into your Dropbox in the first step, and during step two I get lost.
When I type in the command (as per the second step)
    ln -s ~/Dropbox/ Calendars/ ~/Library /Calendars
into Terminal, I receive "No such file or directory." Thinking the spaces between Dropbox/Calendars and Library/Calendars were erroneous, I attemped removing them, only to return "File exists."
I'm not at all savvy with using Terminal, but appreciate any and all help I can get.
    Thanks!

    Roger,
Thanks for such a quick response. I am strictly copying and pasting that command (which then enters with the tilde ~). You mentioned both username and the tilde and your meaning of the word "that" becomes a little ambigous, did you mean to use the tilde or replace it with my username?
    Roger Wilmut1 wrote:
This is used to indicate your username (the name of your Home Folder) and it is that you should be typing.
Also, being as cautious as I am using Terminal, I only removed those spaces on the recommendation of a prevoius support discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11039672#11039672, I'm far too chicken to mess around in Terminal with so little knowledge of what I could accidentally do.

  • Syncing folders between 2 macs

    Peace be onto you dudes....
I've fairly new to macs ( just recently switched over form using a PC over 10 years) and I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro, and i already have a Imac at home thats connected to a firewire 800 1TB HD used partly for time machine backups. What is the best way to keep files syncronized on both the iMac and the macpro? Say have the directories documents always be in sync on both computers, meaning any photos i add on the iMac would automaticly appear on the laptop and in iPhoto? files would act the same way etc.
I know about folder sharing the iMac does show up in the finder, and i can login as admin and access all files on there and vice versa, but i want something easier, and automatic (if there is such a thing) just between these 2 macs.
    Thanks for your imput

    Hi lukegt
Welcome to the world of happy Mac users, and glad to hear you switched.
You've got a host of different options open to you in regards to sharing files, or syncing files.
It really depends on which preference you have. I'll doubt I can even scrape the tip of the iceberg... but here goes:
First, my personal suggestion is to get a second drive for your files. As a matter of preference, I wouldn't want my important files on the same drive that I'm backing up on. It kinda defeats the purpose. If the backup drive fails... all is lost in your case (back up and originals).
To begin to point you in the direction of your answer...
You can either network a hard drive (via Ethernet, or wirelessly via Airport Extreme or Time Portal), or you can use a file sync program like CrushSync (see downloads section of Apple.com page) to integrate your data.
If you're really savvy, you can begin to delve into Automator actions...
If you opt to network a drive, you'll be working in the actual file.
If you opt to sync, you'll be working on remote copy of the file and syncing it later.
Best wishes and happy hunting. With the gurus perusing these boards, you're bound to find an answer you can use.

  • Syncing iweb to multiple macs

I'm using iweb on my mac mini, but also have a mac book that i use when i'm not at home. I was wondering if anyone knew how to be able to work on the same website on both computers. If there is some setting i'm not seeing or some kind of software i can get to do this. Also the same thing with i photo and some of the other ilife programs.

I had this SAME issue, and after much Googling, this is what I came up with and it works perfect. (and makes it easy to back it up)
You'll need to have an external drive, or a USB flash drive.. or some kind of portable storage unit to transport a file to the other mac (even a time capsule would work).
There is a file that is called Domain in your Library Folder (Username > Library > Application Support > iWeb > Domain.site
If you copy this file onto the external device, and double click the file once on the secondary machine, it will then open up iWeb.
And Vala! You can edit your iWeb Project on two machines.
You can copy this file onto the other mac... or you can keep it on the external device to make it eay to transport between the two machines.

  • Sync movie to multiple macs

I'm sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere.  I looked around and couldn't find anything and it seems a fairly simple thing.  Here's the deal and please tell me if I'm wrong.
I understood that if I bought a movie I could have it on more than one mac (up to five). I have two, a MacPro 8 core (2010), and a new Macbook Pro (2011).  I bought a movie on itunes the other day on the MacPro but also want to have it on my laptop when I travel.  I've tried copying it to the laptop but it disappears off the laptop as soon as I play it on the MacPro.  Both computers are authorized.
I've never had trouble moving music around that I have bought from itunes.  What am I doing wrong?  Or, did I misunderstand that I can have the movie on both computers?
    Thanks.

    Jim,
Thanks for your reply.  I haven't had any trouble copying things from one computer to the other in the past.
I already have Home Sharing turned on, on both computers, however, it doesn't show up in the sidebar. I turned them both off and turned them on again.  As soon as I close itunes, sharing is gone from itunes the next time i open itunes.  The same thing happens in both computers. Both computers are running on the same wifi network. Neither computer shows up on the other.  I attached a couple screen shots: First one showing Home Sharing turned on, although the other computer doesn't show up in the side bar. The second screen shot is the side bar after I closed and reopened itunes.  Sharing is gone.
Regarding my original issue, I went to copy the movie again from the MacPro to the laptop, and found it already there in the correct folder.  However, it doesn't show up in itunes movies.  I deleted it and copied it again and although it is in the correct folder with the rest of my movies (which do show up in itunes), this one doesn't appear in itunes movies.
I can play it by navigating to the folder and use quicktime player, but it doesn't show up with the rest of my movies in itunes.  So, I have the movie, just not where it's supposed to be.  So now I have a second issue but a work around for the first (not having the movie at all).  Any advice from you or anyone else?

  • Sync Libraries across multiple Macs

I have an iMac which is my primary machine as well as a MacBook Pro. I want to be able to work on my images ubiquitously across both machines. Does anyone know of any sort of utility that would allow me to work on one machine then have a daily sync to the other so that all changes are replicated across both computers?

Aperture has some of this ability built-in. If you make changes in one library, and attempt to import it to a second library, Aperture will just sync the changes. I'd encourage you to read up on the documentation on this area.
I have a little trepidation recommending it for a solution for everyday sync. But it's certainly something I encourage you to check out and investigate it, though if it were me I'd do initial experimentation on some trial libraries.
And I have much trepidation about using something like ChronoSync to do this. They simply don't understand Aperture's library structure, and frankly I think the chances that you'll eventually corrupt the database (say if you forget to close Aperture on one machine and then sync) over time are very, very high.
