Syncing iPhoto with Chrono Sync

Hi there,
I current have a MacBook Pro at home and an iMac 24" at work. To ensure that I have the same mailboxes on both machines (that's the local mailboxes not the ones on the server) I use Chrono Sync on each machine and an external hard drive to make sure that what I have in the office is the same as at home.
Now, my question is, can I do the same thing with the iPhoto gallery? This way I have the same photos on both machines?
It may be a simple yes or no answer, but any issues you may think of would be good

Sometmes the terminology here is confusing. So bear with me.
I wanted to Sync it completely, so that Libraries A and B are identical.
That means, if you add pics to Library A and add different pics to Library B that - after a sync - Library A and Library B will both include all the pics.
+You can't do this with Chronosync+ Period. Or any Syncing app. Period.
So far, I have done the first 'sync' by doing a bi-directional sync from Library A (my MacBook Library) to a folder on the external hard drive called 'iPhoto'.
That's not "bi directional". The traffic is only one way. Nor is it syncing. You simply copied your Library to this new location.
When I launched iPhoto again on the MacBook, whilst holding down alt, I selected the new folder on the external hard drive and it opened up the library without a problem.
Of course. You've simply moved your library from one Mac to an external HD, then you've plugged the HD into another Mac and opened the Library. So far you've not tried to move photos +from Library to Library+.
but have realised that my work Mac is iLife'08 where the MacBook is iLife'09 ('09 must have come with the newer MacBook). So that means I can't open them on my work Mac anyway until I upgrade.
Correct. No early version of iPhoto can open a later version's Library.
do you not think that if I did a Sync from the iPhoto folder on the external drive with the iPhoto library on my work Mac that it would sync the files across?
I really don't understand the sentence. Exactly what do you mean by "Sync from the iPhoto folder on the external drive with the iPhoto library on my work Mac"
Clarify the word "Sync".
Yes you can copy the Library on the External to your work Mac. It will overwrite the Library already on your work Mac. Photos currently on your Work Mac that are not in the Library on the HD will be erased.

Try deleting the photo cache from your computer and then re-try the photo sync - the location of the cache, and how to delete it, is on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314

  • Terrance Devlin answered a question about iPhoto (4-2012) re:copying iPhoto Library to an ExHD, and losing all the albums. I can't locate the "Choose Library" when I open iPhoto with the opt button. Can anyone help?

I tried to move my images (over 25,000) to an External Hard drive to open up some memory, hoping to make my computer run faster. It took three hours to move the images and I see them all in the mac's menus. However when I try to open them with iPhoto now, none appeared. and when I tried to import them back to the main HD they come in to iPhoto just fine, but not with the albums nor any of the massive organization i'd created in the original. this represents years of images, and I can't imagine that I'd have to recopy them into folders/albums again.
Terrance Devlin answered a similar question back in April of last year. He said to make sure the ExHD is formatted to MAC OS Extended (Journaled) and to move the library to the ExHD and then open iPhoto with the option button and select "Choose Library" from the resulting menu.
Command "I" tells me that the new drive is formatted correctly. I can't locate the "Choose Library" when I open iPhoto with the opt button.
First, I wondered if the application needs to be on the same drive as the Library. I sure would like to know if I can find out how to restore all the folders I had them in. Terrance's advice helped the user that had asked the question.

    Here are Apple's instructions:
If you are using iPhoto ’06 or earlier, you will need to follow these steps to tell iPhoto where the Library is now located:
Hold down the Option key on the keyboard and open iPhoto. Keep the Option key held down until you are prompted to create or choose an iPhoto Library.
    Click Choose Library.
Locate and select the iPhoto Library in its new location.
    (from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229 )
Below (in the link below) is what you should see when holding down the option key and opening iPhoto. Keep holding down the option key until this dialogue comes up. You want to select the Choose Library button.

I have a large number of photos imported into iPhoto with the dates wrong.  How can I adjust multiple photos (with varying dates) to the same, correct, date?

If I understand you correctly, when you enter a date in the Adjust Date and Time window, the picture does not update with the date you enter.  If that is the case then something is wrong with iPhoto or your perhaps your library.
How large a date change are you putting in?  iPhoto currently has an issue with date changes beyond about 60 years at a time.  If the difference between the current date on the image and the date you are entering is beyond that range that may explain why this is not working.
If that is not the case:
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.iphoto
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)
---NOTE: to get to the "home > library" hold down option on the keyboard and click on "Go" > "Library" while in the Finder.
    Let me know the results.

    Hi j,
I don't know if this will work, but I'd try logging in to an admin account, going to your main library (not user library), opening it, opening Application Support, selecting iPhoto, hold down the command key and press i, click on the lock in the lower left, entering the password and making sure you have Read & Write privileges for System and Admin.

launch iPhoto wile holding down the option key and select the original library - when you create a new library of course it is empty
And you seriously need to backup your iPhoto library and purchase and install iPhoto '11 version 9.5.x from the App store and download and run the iPhoto library upgraded \then run the new iPhoto - 7.1.5 is not fully compatible with Mavericks

  • Using iphoto with iphoto library on external hard drive

My Imac is running snow leopard with ilife '11. I have imported way too many photos into Iphoto which is really slowing it down. I'd like to put all of my photos on an external hard drive and use that as my iphoto library--which should be possible, as I gather from reading various other related posts. Another reason to put it on an external drive is so that I can use my new macbook air to edit/organize while on the go.
    1. How do I set up my Iphoto library on an external hard drive?
    2. How do I make sure that all future photos go to the library on that external hard drive?
    3. How do I run Iphoto with the library on an external hard drive?
    THANK YOU for your help!

Hello. I just transferred my iPhoto library to a Western Digital My Book for Mac external hard drive. Do you know if I needed to format this drive even though it says it's for Mac. I did not format it and there were not any instructions with the drive that said I needed to do it. The transfer seems to have worked ok but my backups from Time Machine onto Time Capsule are inconsistent. I already posed a question regarding this problem but I noticed this message regarding formating the external disk and I wonder if that is causing the problem. Thanks.

  • IPhoto With Adobe Elements Or CS4

I'm trying to use iPhoto with Adobe Elements (and/or CS4) as my default editor.
I have the files in RAW / NEF format and I click to edit in external editor.
My goal is to save the changes I've made back into iPhoto (overwriting my old version) without saving it as an external file and reimporting it in.
    I read on an IPhoto site this;
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work.
When I save the file, it saves a JPEG version in the iPhoto directory, but it doesn't show up when I go back to iPhoto.  I'm also wondering why I can't save it back as a NEF file (shouldn't I do that since it's a RAW image to start)?
What's the proper way to work with iPhoto and Photoshop?
I know there are purists that seem to push to use Bridge, but i've grown to like iPhoto's features, tagging, etc.   How can I do this?
    Thanks..

This might be of some help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds.
