Syntax Highlighting - or Code Hints?

Hi everyone.......I just can't seem to find the answer to this one - I'm using CS4
I changed a few minor things in my master template, and now in all dependent pages the changes have been highlighted in red and the items that were changed show in blue. Before I made the changes in the template everything in the dependent pages was greyed out and un-editable.
Anyone have a clue what it means and if I have a problem that needs fixing? Also, how would I turn off this highlighting and return the text to grey? I've made many changes to templates before without seeing this behaviour.

Everything validates fine Nancy, in both the template and child pages, so I don't think it is a serious error, just Dreamweaver trying to tell me something. I spent a whole afternoon trying to discover what that might be, but could find nothing.
Seems you are right Jon that it is just telling me about inline css, because that appears to be the only thing that is affected. I never realized before that my original template must have been entirely free of inline css and that is why I did not see the phenomenon until recently. When I started out I thought you put all css stuff in the separate css documents, but as I learned to use inline css I of course started using it more and more and as it made its way into template edits the new red and blue highlighting started to appear in all the dependent pages. Of course my first thoughts were always going to be that it must be some kind of error message.
On reflection it is probably more efficient to use style sheets for master templates and the code that will be common to hundreds of pages, so I did a little editing to relocate the inline css and the highlighting has gone. Perhaps that is what Dreamweaver was trying to tell me.

Syntax highlighted program code in keynote?

Is there any easy way insert programming code (in my case Ruby code) into a slide so it shows up with syntax highlighting and formating suitable for the code?
I.E. so it looks like the highlighted code in Textmate or other gui editors?

TextWrangler (and thus presumably BBEdit) do preserve their syntax colouring when PDFed, as does Taco HTML Edit. My guess is that this is capability is an app-by-app feature.
If you were desperate for a PDF output to Keynote, you could always copy the text from Textmate and paste it into the freeware TextWrangler. You would likely have to adjust the default syntax colouring to match Textmate, but that would be relatively straightforward.

XSL pages will not syntax highlight my code

I have a site built on XSL pages. In Dreamweaver, my code syntax higlights properly. In Edge Code, the same pages do not. I tried to find a setting to possibly get this to work, but I have not found it.
What do I need to do?

Windows OS is preventing you from editing a file inside "Program Files (x86)" folder. You can drag the file temporarily out to your desktop, edit it and then drag it back into its original folder after editing. You will get prompts for administrator permission when draggging in ant out, but you can click on Continue button to perform the action.

Would like to use syntax highlighting in body text for code snippets

I have a feeling this isn't actually possible without a whole lot of manual work, but I want to preserve syntax highlighting in code examples in my online help. Like this:

I'm not sure if it's a feasible solution for you, but what about displaying the code (complete with color coding - oops, that's colour coding for you English chaps) in whatever application you use. Then grab a screen capture of the relevant area and insert as an image in RoboHelp.
My thought here is that you could maintain the code in the other app in case you need to change it at some point. Then if it does change, just snag another image.

Code Hints - not functioning. Why not?

Code Hints in Dreamweaver CS4 were functioning fine until this morning. Now they don't appear to work.
I've checked for syntax errors, but Code Hints will not function on any existing page or in a new document.
I'm presuming that I've disabled them somehow but cannot find how or where.
Code Hints are enabled via Preferences (Close tags after "</" & delay 0 seconds)
The menu only gives options for Spry and DOM Code Hints.
Any ideas as to why it's not functioning. I notice a number of posts where the same question has been raised but am yet to read a reply.
All hints welcome...

Easiest solution?
Uninstall and reinstall Dreamweaver.
Sorted in 20 minutes. Even better, Dreamweaver 'remembers' all site login/ftp data, passwords, etc, so no concerns there.

Syntax Colors and highlighting plsql code

I need some help for something I cannot figure out. I just downloaded SQL Developer and tried it out. So far it looks really good and does pretty much everything I need.
I'm using JDK1.6_13 on Windows Vista.
However, I can't figure out how the syntax highlighting works. First of all, our package sources are stored on the filesystem with extensions .pck and .bdy. We take these source files and then compile them to the database.
The first thing I've noticed is that if I launch SQL Developer and then open a .bdy file right away, it displays in black and white. No coloring of any sort...No shading of the comments and words like function, procedure, varchar2 are not colored. Actually, any subsequent file I open .bdy, .pck will not have any syntax highlighting either. However, if I open a compiled package from the database, it will open and have the proper highlighting for the comments and the words I mentioned previously. I thought that was weird how it could properly highlight compiled packages but not files on the filesystem.
After much playing around, I noticed that if I launch SQL Developer and then open a compiled package from the database right away, any .bdy or .pck file I open from the filesystem will now have syntax highlighting. That's weird.
Why is this?
My test scenarios are:
Scenario 1.
1. Launch Sql Developer
2. Open mypackage.bdy from filesystem.
Result: No Syntax Highlighting.
Scenario 2.
1. Launch sql developer
2. Open mypackage from database. Noticed that there is syntax highlighting.
3. Open mypackage.bdy from filesystem.
Result: Syntax Hightlighting
Scenario 3.
1. Launch sql developer
2. Open mypackage.bdy from filesystem. Noticed no syntax highlighting.
3. Open anotherpackage from database. Noticed syntax highlighting.
4. Close mypackage.bdy
5. ReOpen mypackage.bdy from filesystem. NOW THERE IS SYNTAX HIGHLIGHTING!!! WTF???
Result: MAXIMUM WEIRDNESS!!!
Am I missing something in the setup or something???

I also noticed that the code folding feature does not work with packages that exceed 10,000 lines or thereabouts.I've seen this reported before, but on the other hand 10000 lines is pretty long. This might be a memory issue. If you run SQLDeveloper from <sqldev>\sqldeveloper\bin\sqlldeveloper.exe it leaves a console open which may show errors.

Best strategy for creating a Code Editor (w/ syntax highlighting) in flash

I'm looking into creating a javascript code editor in flash. I would light to include syntax highlighting and am eliciting suggestings on how best to approach it.
Here are my thoughts so far:
I don't see anything pre-built, so I'll have to do it myself, am I wrong here?
I have seen as3syntaxhighlihgt which will take code and turn it into a highlighted HTML file, but not sure whether or not I could find a way to combine that with a text editor that could support html???

After more research I've answered this one myself. For anyone else comming across this thread here is what I found:
as3syntaxhighlight is a good option for code highlighting in flash, see the demo at:

(.asc) Code Hinting in Flash Professional CS5.5 || Flash Builder 4.5

Problem: I would like to enable code hinting and highlighting in either Flash Professional or Flash Builder when developing an Actionscript Communications File (.asc).
Steps Taken:
Searched Google with limited success, most signs all pointed to FMSGuru.com where one may obtain an Eclipse Plugin, but:
It was created in 2007 (likely out dated)
It has known bugs that haven't been addressed
Searched this forum / adobe's web site to find a solution, to no avail.

To note, Dreamweaver has the ability to provide code hinting if I remember correctly but I'm perpetually disappointed in the FMS team for not providing even ONE item that helps in the development of server side coding for FMS. They have never provided anything and it's been up to the good will of developers for the platform to put together tools. As it is now, you'll probably never see anything better as most people (that I know of) have moved away from FMS, partially for this reason despite multiple requests that Adobe do something. Not to insult the FMS team, as they do what they have to do to pull in the paycheck, and the bean counters provide that and seem to be making most of the decisions.

Nano syntax highlighting: catch-all syntax for configuration files

After years of using nano, I only recently learned that it supports syntax coloring... (Why would they turn that off by default? ) Well, I thought I'll make up for it by making extra good use of it from now on...
Unfortunately it didn't ship a highlighting syntax for the the kind of files that I use nano the most for: system configuration files.
So I wrote my own, and after tweaking a bit here and there whenever I encountered a config file for which the highlighting wasn't satisfactory at first, I think the result is now good enough (screenshots below) that it's worth sharing with my fellow Arch users:

Hints:
The colors I chose look good (imo) with the terminal background and color settings that I use, but might not look good, or even readable, with yours, so simply change the color names in the code snippet to whatever you prefer - valid color names are:
If you use a console with white background, you'll have to change at least the white color I chose for comments and punctuation.
The first code line in the snippet includes a regular expression that defines for which file names this syntax highlighting should be used. Whenever you encounter a config file that is not matched by this, but you would still like to open it with syntax highlighting, you can manually select this syntax with nano's -Y switch, like so:
nano -Y conf myConfigFile
Technical Note:
It's implemented as a single catch-all syntax, since nano chooses which syntax to apply based on the filename, and in the case of config files usually not much can be learned about the content format from the file name extension (.conf can by anything from flat key/value tuples to XML, .ini can be the official INI format or something else, etc...).
This means that some compromises have been made, so with this highlighting syntax probably no config file looks 100% as good as a highlighting syntax that would be specifically optimized for one kind of config format, but all in all the vast majority of config files should look pretty good.

I'm afraid they might be out of scope for this generic config-file syntax.
Logically they're not system config files, and technically they're a pretty specialized and complex format (different "types" of rules, rules spanning multiple lines, rules containing arbitrary Bash code, etc.).
This is how an .mk file currently looks with this highlighting syntax:
$ nano -Y conf /usr/lib/httpd/build/rules.mk
And apart from highlighting variables of the form $$abc or $(abc), I'm not sure how much can be improved here without breaking the highlighting for more conventional config files.
It would probably be better to create a specialized highlighting syntax just for .mk files.

Syntax highlighting not working with label on if statement in fortran in Visual studio 2010

I am having a difficult time in figuring out the syntax highlighting in Visual studio. I am using fortran code and there are labels in if statements as follows:

So the problem I am having is when I click on the `if` next to label `if_2003`, then I cannot use `CTRL + ]` to move to the ending `if`. If there is no label before `if`, then the shortcut is working fine. I don't know what I could do so that it would start

Different Styles in PlainView - Syntax Highlighting?

I've managed to extend PlainView and looking at old JEdit code I have the syntax highlighting working for the most part. However, at certain times while typing the cursor starts to get way ahead of the text it's typing. And as I backspace on the line the cursor eventually gets closer to the character the closer it gets to the start of the line.
I'm overridding the "drawUnselectedText()" method in PlainView to do the coloring.
Here's the code, you can see the call to SyntaxUtilities.paintSyntaxLine() which is JEdit's class to do the drawing.

I'm not sure what the problem is..i thought it might be an issue with the View and drawing multiple font styles. Since plain view only deals with a single font color and size. I tried using LabelView but that seems to need a StyledDocument and I had problems when I tried to use DefaultStyledDocument for my syntaxdocument. I was getting strange offset issues when using the Segment class.

I am using PlainDocument because that seemed to be what everyone was using for a syntax editor..since the structure of the document in a Plain Document is less complex.
I orginally started out using the setCharacterAttributes() method on the DefaultStyledDocument and letting the views draw the text. That all seemed to work except for the "segment offset" issue. And I wasn't sure where the best spot to get the document to redraw subsequent lines in the case of changing a multiline comment, etc.
So, everything I read about others attempts for syntax highlighters seems to use either StyledEditorKit with a fixed language set with custom parsing and using the setCharacterAttributes method. Or they use the plaindocument approach with a custom view..(which no one seems to share the source) or the project just simply uses the JEditTextArea directly (which we can't do in our product).
We don't need multiple fonts per-line.. The document will always use one font face (Arial, Helvetica, etc) but may use different styles per word (bold, italic, etc).
I thought I'd need to use FontMetrics to get the size of the font and such. But there didn't seem to be a difference in measurements based on the style of the font. (i.,e A bold font has the same charWidth('m') size as a regular style.
At least that's what my test program showed..
The other thing I noticed is that when the document is successfully colored and I use the mouse to select a region of text, the style of the text reverts back to normal. I'm sure that's because I only override the drawUnselectedText() method.
Any ideas? Is there anyone who has successfully done this?

I just tried using a proportional font in my editor, and now I'm seeing your runaway-caret problem. Specifically, the caret remains in sync with the text as long as no bold characters are encountered, but it gets noticeably farther out of whack with each bold character it passes. I suspect that, when you measured the charWidth, your FontMetrics object wasn't really based on a bold font, because bold versions of proportional fonts are larger. And of course, the model/view conversion methods assume that the same style of the same font is used throughout the document. I've never had to deal with that problem, since I've always used monospaced fonts by preference, and bold versions of monospaced fonts really are the same size as the non-bold versions. I suggest you do the same, because getting this to work with proportional fonts look like a major hassle.

Ctrl + Spacebar will not bring up code hints either

I'm using Windows XP CS3 with Dreamweaver from Creative Suite CS4. I cannot get code hints (when enabled) or when I press Ctrl + Spacebar.
When I press Ctrl + Spacebar nothing happens.

Syntax highlighting not working on PL/SQL developer tool

Hello,
Syntax highlighting is not working on PL/SQL developer tool using the beautifier. When I go set Syntax highlighting parameters (from EDIT>PL/SQL Developer Beautifier Options > User Interface> Editor> Syntax Highlighting ) and click apply, the changes are not reflected in SQL code in the SQL window. Other feautures in the beautifier such as Fonts, Window types are working fine.
Please help me with this issue.

XML Syntax highlighting (again :)

I know, that there have been quite a view posts about this topics, but as far as I see, there has been no solution to this.
So I wanted to ask if someone has implemented a XML Syntax highlighting or knows where to get a tutorial from to accomplish so (inheriting from DefaultStyledDocument...?)

CSS Code Hints in CS3

I'm new to DW (CS3). I'm making an external CSS and when I
press return to get a new line I get a code hint that pops up to
select which attribute I might want next. I find if I click on an
item in the list it is not entered for me.
If I use the arrow keys and press return/enter it accepts it
an enters it for me.
Is this how it is supposed to work? That seems like an error
to me.

As you type the hint zeros in on the rule that you want (or

Once the
desired rule is highlighted pressing the Enter key on your
keyboard will
place the rule in your stylesheet.
