Sysprep woes with Windows 8

Guys,
I am trying to run the image capture wizard on a surface tablet running 64 but Windows 8.1
My failure code is 0x00004005 which is happening during the sysprep stage.  I have set the values below but I still continue to have this problem.  Any ideas ?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Status\SysprepStatus\CleanupState\
Set to value: 2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Status\SysprepStatus\GeneralizationState\
Set to value: 7
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\SkipRearm
Set to value: 1

Personally, I wouldn't capture an image from a Surface device and create your reference image using a Virtual Machine.
Check the c:\windows\system32\sysprep\panther\setuperr.log to see if there is more information about the failure.
Does SYSPREP work if you manually run it?

    Its a Windows error

So, this is what I did (again) this morning.   Note, it differs in many instances that what you did, but these were my exact steps:
    1)  Fresh Install from “en_windows_8_1_enterprise_x64_dvd_2971902.iso” (current on TechNet as of last week) into a Virtual box *offline*.   NOTE:  This is Enterprise where
    you used “Pro”
    2)  Used “express settings” to set up non-Microsoft/Local account:  bec-admin
    3)  Did *not* join domain.
    4)  Installed Virtual Box 4.3.4 tools (so I could get shared folders/internet to fully work.)  Rebooted (as is required by the tools installer).  NOTE:  this is the
    only 3rd party software installed.
    5)  Changed the clock (as the default/express install puts me in the Pacific Time Zone (changed this to EST).   Connected laptop to Internet.
    6)  Ran Windows Update -- 12 updates listed.  Installed and rebooted.
    7)  I deleted all restore points and ran “Disk Cleanup” to delete anything listed (including system files) and rebooted and left windows running
    8)  For something different this time, I left the VM up and running for about an hour in case something magically has to run in the background after login to clean up stuff.
I do not need to run “osspprearm” because Windows is automatically activated on our network by this time.
    An hour later….
    9)  I run sysprep /oobe /generlize /unnattend:<my unnattend.xml> file — from the bec-admin account (contents of unattend.xml file are listed above...)
    10)  Rebooted.  Logged back in to “bec-admin”.
And — as usual with my experiences in this thread — only about 6 Metro app icons are on the start screen and other apps are missing from the list of all apps, but some start to install
if I watch, and some “error” — in this attempt “Store” says “error” on it -- as they install
And any newly created accounts (at this point) only have the 5 Metro app icons in them.
The only way I’ve been able to make this work -- and by "work" I mean have the ability to create new accounts which contain *all* Metro applications — which is not optimal — is to have
an additional local account that I *only* run sysprep from (call it “configure” for example)— and leave the “bec-admin” account manually created (either by sysprep or manually *prior* to sysprep as a second administrator-level account.)   I then would
need to log into “bec-admin” to install software (or provision new accounts, etc) and then log back into “configure” to resysprep the system.
Note — I did try setting skiprearm and persistalldeviceinstall to 1 prior to running sysprep above (after restoring from a snapshot) — but that didn’t matter, either -- the only difference
was that "Camera" came up with an "error" this time.
    I fully believe there's a difference between "Pro" and "Enterprise" -- or 64-bit vs. 32-bit -- here.

  • What is the right way to do a sysprep Image for Windows 7 and 8

    Hi,
i´d like to know which way is the right one to do a sysprepp from an System with Windows 7/8.
Is it ok when I install the system with all drivers/patches etc. and after that I will open a command prompt with admin rights and choose the settings OOBE and Genrealize and Shutdown.
After that I create an Image with ImageX or Acronis and I´m ready to deplay it right? The local user which I created during the installaton should stay as an Supportuser.
So is ok or is there something wrong. Microsoft itself shows this way here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/ee530017.aspx
But they write a lot of other faq´s where they discribe other ways. So what is now right and wrong?
Please don´t le my die stupid ;)
    Regards,
    The Core

    Hi,
Any update here? Have you checked the links above?
Regarding your concern, it is OK to install the drivers or patches before you Genrealize the image. And if we want to keep the drivers during sysprep in order to use it on the computers with the same hardware configuration, we should specify
    PersistAllDeviceInstalls  to true.
Important: When you set up your reference computer, Windows Setup installs drivers for any detected devices. By default, Windows Setup removes these drivers when you generalize the system. If you're deploying the image to computers that
have the same hardware and devices, you'll want Windows Setup to reinstall these same drivers. To keep these drivers on the computer during system generalization, set the Microsoft-Windows-PnPSysprep |
    PersistAllDeviceInstalls setting to true.
The video shows the general steps using sysprep and imagex to capture the image. If you have no special requirements for drivers, or some applications need to be specific, just follow the steps. OOBE is a simple booting process, and audit mode is a process
to specific the image. More information, see:
    Customize Windows in Audit Mode
    Any other concerns?

  • Elements 7 with Windows 7???

I recently updated my computer to Windows 7 (heaven to get away from that TERRIBLE Vista) but one thing went horribly wrong - Photoshop Elements no longer works right! Everything EXCEPT the edit function works alright, but since EDIT is the function I use 99% of the time, that is "a bit" of  a drag.....
Is there anybody out there who has experienced the same problem??? I find NOTHING searching the net, and am more than a little confused that I'd be the only person in the whole world who this has happened to. I have reinstalled, several times, tried getting to the edit function various ways, tried going from e.g. RAW files straight to the editor - all with the same abysmal result! I get a dialogue box with "Photoshop Elements has stopped working" and then the usual "lovely" idea that I should "search for a solution". Since that never happens, here I am....
    Help? anyone?
    Cheers,
    Bernt

You can log bugs/fature requests for Photoshop Elements here ~
You can log feature requests at: ....[   ]....
    and
    bugs at .....[   ]...http://www.adobe.com/misc/bugreport.html
If you don't mind me asking, what exactly good do you think that will do?
Adobe already "fixed" all the bugs they intend to in PSE-7, and they call it PSE-8. Then for good measure they have injected some new bugs into that. Meanwhile they'll try to humor people asking for new features in PSE-9. Yeah, you'll get your "new features", along with an even more bloated pig of a program and a new set of bugs. The programmers in some 3rd world slum are just waiting to humor you, and respond to your every little whim.
There never are any real "updates" from Adobe on older versions of PSE. All the Adober "Updater" does, is generate advertising messages.  Get your head out of your ***, that's not an "updater" it's ADWARE...! And, it's adware that you can't even shut down with Windows "Task Manager", since if you do, the program crashes.  >>> Adobe wants to "updater" you out of another hundred bucks, period.
Now, many people, (including myself), have responded to these threads about whether or not PSE-7 will run under Win 7, it does, (sort of). Just be prepared for your own little personal "bug surprise".
Then there's "Plan "B"...! Buy a copy of Windows 7, and install "XP Mode", then install PSE-7 into that. A couple hundred bucks will end your misery! Or will it?
I have installed PSE-7 into 2 Windows 7 Machines. The Windows 7 Pro 64 bit installation, (i3-530 4GB RAM), is the only one that will generate a set thumnails without having to go out for a beer while it does. And, it has the same problems as the 32 bit Win 7 installation. So, I'm thinking you can't really blame the 64 bit OS for any woes with the program. Windows installs 32 bit programs into an x86 (32 bit) folder, and runs them as such anyway. So, if there's problems, it's more likely that the problem is with the device drivers

  • Sysprep problems with Default User profile

I've read the previous posts in this forum about using Sysprep with Windows XP SP3 and I have followed the instructions in MS Article 959753. I applied my customizations to the local Administrator account and included UpdateServerProfileDirectory=1 in the sysprep.inf file. The only other thing I've got in my sysprep.inf file is the parameter to preserve OEM pre-activation when re-installing Windows XP. I set it to Mini and Reseal. After imaging, I create a new user, log in and NONE of the customizations are present. Is there something that I'm missing?

I'm not sure why that is not working.
When a user logs on who does not have a profile, the first thing Windows
does is copy the Default Profile Directory over to a new profile folder
for that user. Then that becomes the user's profile.

  • Syncing iphone with windows 7 contacts - error message outlook.pst not foun

I have set set up ITunes to sync my Iphone GS with Windows Contacts. When I sync I get an error message :
The file c:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\Outlook.pst could not be found
Sometimes the error message comes up 2 or 3 times.
Secondly, my Iphone is syncing with something because an old version of my windows address book is now on my iphone. Of course if I add a new contact to Windows Contacts, it does not appear on my iphone.
I dont have Outlook installed on my PC. It was removed, but I guess I do have an old outlook.pst file from my old times with Windows XP.
So how does Itunes manage the sync and how can I stop it syncing with my old address book and use Windows Contacts? I have tried resetting my sync history but it did not work.
I am running Windows7 (upgrade from Vista).

I am also having issues with syncing my Iphone 3GS with the latest version on Itunes. I have for a long while now been doing just great. My contacts, phone numbers, emails have all synced very nicely, no problems. As soon as I downloaded the new Itunes 9.1 I can no longer sync contacts, and calendars, as usual.
I tried several things that were suggested to me in the troubleshooting but nothing has helped. It usually tells me that my computer is not set up for syncing, and after arranging that it still doesn't work. As well, it says it cannot find the requested services.
    Please help.
I am running windows 7, and have been for a while, it's not windows 7, it's the new Itunes upgrade.

  • IPod Classic - ok with Windows, not with iTunes

    Hi,
    I have a Classic 160GO iPod.
    Suddenly this problem appeared :
    - no music or pictures were recognized by my iPod, but the disk space was used for "Other"
    - this iPod is not known with iTunes
    - This iPod is known as a removable hard disk, via Windows 7 (Main computer), Windows XP (secondary computer), a linux thing (a friend computer).
    1. I already checked this iPod with the diagnostics mode (see https://discussions.apple.com/message/19048752#19048752)
    result is :
    - reallocs : 0
    - Pending sectors : 32
My understanding is that my iPod hard disk is ok and valid.
    2. I followed most of the recommended way to repaird the iPod as per Support (8 out of 10)
    NOthing is working.
I confirm I have installed the latest version of iTunes.
    3. I read the following page : https://discussions.apple.com/message/19158071#19158071 to find the relevant firmware.
But the iPod Classic 160GO is not in the list.
    My questions
--> Do you have an idea to solve my problem ?
--> What could happend i I format my iPod with windows ? It would be only a hard disk after, wouldn't it ?
    --> I f I format, is there a solution to re-install the iPod software (= firmware ?)
    Thank you for your help.

The iPod hardisk is  looks new from the Reallocs and ON Hours, but, it is rebooting more to get the correct spin for data verification, causing tImeouts,  so the Pending Sector will increase.
There maybe something, near the iPod environment, that is causing the drive to fail, and overheat, if it has not already been damaged, or maybe it is just one Hardisk, that slipped through poor quality control.
You can bring the Retract, Realloc and pending number low, by doing low level format, see this article, but your problem of Hardisk rebooting to find a good cluster, wont go away
    Just my thoughts.
Magnets are the primary cause of hardisk crashes,  I would also suspect, using your handphone, while it is near the iPod would also be bad, see the YouTube video on hardboiled eggs using handphone.

  • IPod Nano Video with Windows Movie Maker

I found this page by Apple that explains how to use video from the 5G iPod Nano, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3837
But, I cannot find Windows Movie Maker V2.5, and V2.1 with Windows XP will not import the video from the iPod Nano. Anybody have any ideas on how to solve this? (Besides buying a Mac...)
Also, Windows Media Player 11 will not play the video created with the 5G iPod Nano either.

You can use the AVS Video Editing software to import MPEG-4 Movie files in the same way you'd import .avi files into Windows Movie Maker. Also, the AVS Video Editor will allow you to import iTunes .mp4 audio files and incorporate them into your soundtrack. If you still want to use Windows Movie Maker for your video editing you can also use video conversion software from the same company, i.e. AVS Video Converter 6, to convert from MPEG-4 into .avi or .wmv format. I've found converting to .wmv to be considerably slower than converting to .avi though. Here's a link to the AVS video software offerings below. BTW, the AVS Video Editor can be used for free, while there's a charge for the Converter.
    * As always, exercise caution when using Shareware. So far my own experience has been good.

  • Ipod sync issues with Windows 7

I just purchased a new computer with the Windows 7 operating softeware and now I cannot sync my Ipod Touch (3rd generation) but I do not experience this issue with my old computer with Windows Vista.  When I need to update my Ipod I have to connect it to my old computer.  Help.  I do not want to pay Apple for support when I see countless post about this issue.

    Diane Wordsmith wrote:
Are you set to manually manage on both computers? If not, an auto sync on one of them will erase the iPod and place that computer's library on it.
No that wouldn't be it. The manual vs. Auto sync setting is stored on the iPod, not on iTunes. So if you take a manually managed iPod and plug it into an iTunes it has never connected to before, the new iTunes will still recognize the iPod as manually managed and not do anything bad to it (in theory).

  • Recognizing an iPod with Windows Vista

I have a new computer that came with Windows Vista. I have not been able to get iTunes to operate correctly for Windows Vista to recognize the USB connection to my iPod. Anyone have a patch or downloadable software suggestion to resolve this?

    groans
I finally figured I had nothing to lose--I'd just downloaded a new version of Real Player, which supposedly will work with iPods and Windows Me--and I let my computer format the iPod, hoping that would let it work with Windows again. Apparently not. Now it won't turn on--it's giving me the folder-and-exclamation-point icon. Resetting it didn't help, and I can't restore it because I can't install the software to my computer in the first place.
I suppose the only thing to do is borrow a friend's computer or something.

  • Error 2356 with windows vista 64bit

I have had Itunes and Quicktime working fine but suddenly quicktime was nt working giving me an end program error when i need to play anything so i decided to reinstall Itunes and Quicktime but it started to even give me an error uninstalling them but i managed to manually uninstall them and delete even the reg files but when i try to installl any of them now its gives me an 2356 error
    Please advise?

Unfortunately, I tried every solution on the page (including restoring) and it still doesn't work. I thought the problem was because of a bad video file that iTunes warned me to delete, but that doesn't work at all.
There has to be an issue with Vista. The iPod worked just fine on my Dell with Windows XP. As soon as I switched computers, it stopped working. What issues does iPod have with Vista?

  • Ipod touch with windows vista

Hi,Im looking into geting the ipod touch, but I have read that the ipod touch does not work well with windows vista. I know the new itunes 7.5 just came out. Has that version fixed the problems with the ipod? Also what are the problems the ipod touch is haveing with vista. I have windows vista 32 bit OS. Thank you very much for your help.

Hey, yeah I have major problems syncing to Vista. The album artwork is assigned to the wrong songs or sometimes a chunk of the picture is not in the right place, some of my songs stop half way through the song then the iPod skips to the next song on the list. My movies periodically decide to crash and the only way to get past these spots is to skip ahead (which is very difficult on the iPod touch especially when the movie is long cause you dont want to miss too much) but yeah just letting you know that there ARE some issues with it not saying that yours will do the same but it might.

  • Error ~69 with Windows Vista?

I just purchased a new Gateway with Windows Vista to replace my Dell with XP. Ever since I purchased my Gateway, I am unable to sync any iTunes purchases or material imported from CDs to my iPod 30GB. I keep receiving the ~69 message "Unable to sync to iPod. An unknown error occurred. (~69)." Following this error, the iPod only seems to sync the songs that I've recently played on my iPod when it's been disconnected from my computer.
Is this a problem with my iPod, Vista, or some combination of the two? I do not see any songs that should be causing a problem, and my entire library synced with no problems on the Dell XP machine.

Unfortunately, I tried every solution on the page (including restoring) and it still doesn't work. I thought the problem was because of a bad video file that iTunes warned me to delete, but that doesn't work at all.
