System loading the external hard disk everytime

Hello,
I have a iMac 24" and a external LaCie 1TB Hard disk. The problem is that the system sometimes freeze loading something from the external hd whenever i open an application - for example Safari. I personally don't know whats being loaded, i assume it may be the fonts or whatever. I just don't know how to turn it off.
How can i fix this problem and have my system running smooth?
Oh, and for the record, the Time Machine is turned off.
Thank you,
Alex

Do you mean you have your applications on an external drive, or do you mean launching documents from the external?
If you think it's in the Safari load, remove any items in System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items, and test. If that not it try moving /Users/yourname/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items.
Also Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items
Also check /Library/Start Up Items.
Test again and let us know.

    1. What format is the external drive? It sounds like it's ina format that Macs can't write to. Is it a NAS or NTFS?
    2. Easiest thing: just move your iPhoto Library to the external
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

    1) In 'ExFAT' format, is there a limitation on the file size?
    Not one that will matter.
    2) Is 'MAC OS Extended' format, only for MAC computers?
    Yes, only for Mac
    3) What are those (a) journaled (b) Encrypted & (c) Case-sensitive? or when to use those?
    Again, only for Mac.

  • Upgraded to 10.10.3, the external hard disk keep working and spinning after I ejected successfully, and the HHD keep lights up, feel unsafe to unplug it

I tried on two macbook air, same situation.
This never happen on 10.10.2 or previous version. (The HDD light will off and it will stop running after I ejected before.)
I feel unsafe to unplug the external hard disk when its still light up and running.
I am using Macbook book air 2012 and 2013 with seagate backup plus....
Anyone have same problem? how to fix it?
or its ok to unplug the HDD while the HDD light is still on and running?
MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

I have a G-Tech external hard drive that continues to spin after I have unmounted it and if I disconnect it while it is spinning it makes a very nasty sounding clunk noise. In my case it started doing this after I enabled FileVault a couple of years ago. I have found that if I unmount it and then wait 6 minutes it will stop spinning. It is inconvenient but I only use it once a week and the clunk sound is scary enough that I put up with the wait.

  • How do I encrypt my Time Machine Backup on the External Hard disk

I have taken a backup of my data onto an external Hard Disk. I have used the Time Machine application to take the back up.
I want to encrypt this time machine backup on the External Hard disk. Any suggestions???

    Many thanks!
    Have you selected the disk?
You can only encrypt disks that are directly-connected (ie, not on a network), with the GUID partition map scheme.
Put your mouse pointer on the dimmed checkbox, and after a moment an explanation should appear.

  • How can I download my photos from iphoto to the external hard disk? thanks!

How can I download my photos from iphoto to the external hard disk? thanks!

This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk or new Mac:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How to de-encrypt the external hard disk if i can't remember the password

Is there any method i can do to remove my password without lose the data .

If your using Apple's FileVault2 then when you encrypted it you would have been given a 'Recovery Key' which either you would have been given the choice to store in your iCloud account, or would have been told to it write down and keep it safe somewhere. If you have forgotten both your password and your recovery key then you only have yourself to blame.
On the subject of password, the password is normally your login password i.e. the password you login to the computer with. Have you forgotten that?
If you are able to boot and get in to the computer i.e. login then you could copy everything to an external drive. Then reformat the Mac, set it up and copy things back.

  • Playing video and running an Operation System in the external hard drive

I am sorry that this question is not relevant to apple but I want to ask if I paly video or run an operation system on my external hard drive, will it shorten the life of my mac air or my harddrive.

Probably not. That said anything can and will eventually break but what you are doing what these devices were designed to do. Relax and enjoy.

  • Can i have another operating system in my external hard disk??

for example windows or linux only in my external hard disk meanwhile in my macbook is tiger

Yes, you can if you partition the hard drive. If you want both Windows and Linux, then you need to create three partitions. Your OS X partition must use the GUID partition scheme, but the other partitions must be MBR. Unfortunately, you cannot have two different partition schemes on the same drive. There have been schemes devised to create the different partition schemes needed on a single drive. If you visit www.macosxhints.com you can search for the couple of 'hints' that provide information on how that's done.
If all you want is a Windows partition, then the best thing to do is use Boot Camp to create the partition. You can download the Boot Camp beta directly from Apple's download site. If you do some forum searching you will find many threads discussing the use of Boot Camp and Windows on Intel Macs.

  • Problem with Lightroom 5: how to connect the app with my original pictures which are on a external hard disk and, once this resolved,  how to create virtual pictures

A friend has  installed Lightroom 5  on my MacBook air. he  transferred all my picture that were on my IPhone an on Iphoto on Lightroom but without making virtual copies systematically. He put the original (real?) pictures on a external hard disk under Data_photos folder to allow more memory space on my Mac book Air. My problem now that when I connect the external hard disk with my computer the connexion does not happen automatically. it is like if Lightromm does not recognize the path to get connected to the original/real picture and therefore I cannot see pictures with all their potential and I cannot work on these. I am stuck! What should I do to 1) create this link? 2) create then virtual copies in order to be able to work on my computer without been obliged to connect my external hard disk to be able to use the application Lightroom. The friend who helped me disappeared! He is not in Japan and unable to help me.I hope you can help me. I have been looking for support to apple stores, photo shops, computer specialists but I have not found the expert capable to help me. I am leaving in Geneva. And believe that I should have some one with me physically to resolve a problem which I believe is not a serious one if one knows lghtroom an dinformatic basics... thank in advance to come back to me asap !!!!

  • External Hard Disk not showing up on Finder

    Hi
My HP Pocket Media Drive (USB), when plugged into my MacBook, does not show up on the Finder, even though it shows up on System Profiler. It only shows up on Disk Utility in certain occasions (such as after shutting down and starting up again). I have checked my Finder preferences, that external hard drives are shown on desktop.
I have tried resetting my PRAM and SMC too, but I still can't access the hard disk.
    Any help will be appreciated.

On the chance that your Mac has a phantom folder in its Volumes folder, with that external drive not mounted, invoke the Finder menu option Go > Go to Folder. Enter "/Volumes" (without the quotes) in the field and click "Go". In the resulting window if you see anything with a name that resembles your external drive, trash it.
Anyone know how I can have the external hard disk automatically mount onto my desktop (and thereby bypass the need for several click-thru’s via the finder window)?
Once you're able to mount that external drive, open the Accounts panel of System Preferences and click on the lock in the corner to authenticate if needed. Select your account on the left, then the "Login Items" tab. Drag the mounted disk icon into the window then close System Preferences. That disk should now mount when you log in. A Finder window will open, but you can close that manually. If that bothers you sufficiently, if you search these discussion groups you may be able to find threads that discuss how to work around that.

  • To Upgrade or Not To Upgrade (From External Hard disk to Internal Hard Disk

    Hi, need some advise here.
Currently I have a External Hard Disk (320GB) connect with my IMac with Internal Hard Disk of standard 80GB.It is ok just that have to power on/off the External Hard Disk. It is very common that I forgot to power on the External Hard Disk and my iTune library goes to other location in the Internal Hard Disk instead of follow my setting in my External Hard Disk.
So I am considering remove the standard 80GB in my IMac and change with the 320GB.Read some instruction/procedure on this to me look complicated with the thermal pad thing so now hesitating worth the risk to swap the hard dsik or just leave it as it is.
Leave it as it is or change it?
    Any advice ?

Here's a link to a take-apart guide I used a few times to replace & upgrade drives & memory in my old G4.

No it's not as easy as opening up a pc, but the key word is patience. The key thing to remember is to make sure you get some heatsink paste from your local computer store, and apply it to the areas that need it before buttoning everything back up.
It'll only take you a few hours if you work carefully. While you have it open I highly suggest upgrading your upper memory stick, as well as upgrading your superdrive. I get all my stuff here, they haven't steered me wrong yet:

  • Sharing disabled for external hard disks?

After installing Lion, I find that I could not enable sharing for my external hard disks. I right-clicked each hard disk in Finder, checked the Shared Folder box and after I close the window and reopen it, the Shared Folder box is again unchecked. In System Prefs, I have already enabled File Sharing. Also, I could not do Screen Sharing as well. What could be wrong? I didn't have all these problems with Snow Leopard. Now my media player (on the same network) cannot see the two hard disks attached to my iMac.

If the external hard disk is connected via network, I found that if you connect to that hard disk through its IP address in a web browser and change it's folder preferences to (everyone can read/write), that will allow Lion to access the files.
I had the same situation, and this worked.  You can use a program called Magical Finder to locate the IP address.
    http://www.iodata.jp/lib/product/m/3022_mac.htm
The site is in Japanese, but the software has English support.  Really easy to use, but you could probably use any kind of network scanning software to find the ip address.

  • Startup from external hard disk

I have made a system backup volume on an external Firewire HD. However, since I am using Apple Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard when I start up from the external disk the wireless devices do not connect reliably, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
What do I need to do to make this process more fool proof?
    Please help.
    Rudolf

Get a wired keyboard or tell Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk you want to boot from the external hard drive. This will ensure that it does that until it is told otherwise.
You may have to do the same to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup disk while booted from the external hard disk so the settings are remembered.
Note you really only want to boot from the external hard drive for troubleshooting purposes, and not on a regular basis. External hard drives are much more likely to lose their connection than internal hard drives, and are better suited for backups than regular use. Not to mention the internal hard drive tends to be faster anyway.
