System.out.printIn errors

ok the book gives me this source code:
public class Ellsworth {
public static void main(String[] arguments) {
String line1 = "The advancement of the arts, from year\n";
String line2 = "to year, taxes our credulity, and seems\n";
String line3 = "to presage the arrival of that period\n";
String line4 = "when human improvement must end.";
String quote = line1 + line2 + line3 + line4;
String speaker = "Henry Ellsworth";
String title = "U.S. Commissioner of Patents";
String from = "1843 Annual Report of the Patent Office";
System.out.printIn('\u0022' + quote + '\u0022');
System.out.printIn("\t" + speaker);
System.out.printIn("\t" + title);
System.out.printIn("\t" + from);
I type that in, and in msdos when I type javac ellsworth.java, it gives me the following:
ellsworth.java:11: cannot resolve symbol
symbol : method printIn (java.lang.String)
location: class java.io.PrintStream
System.out.printIn('\u0022' + quote + '\u0022');

ellsworth.java:12: cannot resolve symbol
symbol : method printIn (java.lang.String)
location: class java.io.PrintStream
System.out.printIn("\t" + speaker);

ellsworth.java:13: cannot resolve symbol
symbol : method printIn (java.lang.String)
location: class java.io.PrintStream
System.out.printIn("\t" + title);

ellsworth.java:14: cannot resolve symbol
symbol : method printIn (java.lang.String)
location: class java.io.PrintStream
System.out.printIn("\t" + from);

can anyone solve this for me please? I have SDK 1.3.1_04 (folder called jdk 1.3.1_04) and this is seroiusly pissing me off, I also have windows 2000 built on NT4.0 technology. any way to solve this would be very appreciated :)

Actual behaviour of 1.4.0_01 in Windows 98se is as follows:
Case 1
        Class name A
        File name  A.java
        javac A.java    compiles clean
        javac a.java    compiles clean
Case 2
        Class name a
        File name  a.java
        javac A.java    compiles clean
        javac a.java    compiles clean
Case 3
        Class name a
        File name  A.java
        javac A.java    compile fails
        javac a.java    compiles clean
Case 4
        Class name A
        File name  a.java
        javac A.java    compiles clean
        javac a.java    compile fails
A generalized statement of the behaviour is:.
If (class name and file name case match) {
    the program will compile with any commandline name case
If (class name and file name case do not match) {
    if (the commandline name case matches the class name case) {
        the program will compile
    } else {
        the program will fail to compile
}

  • Redirecting System.out to a textfield

    I want the output created by System.out (especially error messages) redirected to a textfield in stead of the console. How can I do this?

    this is how I've done it. Just create a new instance of this class and pass in your TextArea. It redirects System.out and checks for messages on System.out every 5 seconds.
    import java.io.*;
    import javax.swing.*;

              this.text = text;
              PipedOutputStream pout = new PipedOutputStream();
              System.setOut( new PrintStream( pout ) );
              in = new InputStreamReader( new PipedInputStream( pout ) );
              t = new Thread( this );
              t.start();
         public void run()
              while( true )
                   try
                        StringBuffer buffer = null;
                        while( in.ready() )
                             if ( buffer == null ) buffer = new StringBuffer();
                             buffer.append( (char)in.read() );
                        if ( buffer != null )
                             text.append( buffer.toString() );
                             java.awt.Rectangle r = new java.awt.Rectangle();
                             text.computeVisibleRect( r );
                             text.repaint( r );
                        t.sleep( 5000 );
                   } catch (IOException ioe) {

  • System.out.write() vs System.out.println()

    what is the difference between .write and .println?

    okay. explain to me how the following works. because
    Im getting lost.
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class getData{
         private URL url;
         private InputStream n;
         public static void main(String[] args){
              URL url = null;
              try{
                   url = new URL("http://myhost.com/index.html");
                   InputStream n = url.openStream();
                   int b;
                   while ((b = n.read()) != -1){
                        System.out.write(b);
    //System.out.println(b);
              }catch(Exception x){
                   System.out.println("Error: Bad Url");
    }System.out.write(b) writes the bytes? so shouldn't
    it just print out the number of bytes read by
    n.read() ? instead it will print the content of
    f index.html.
    however, System.out.println(b) will display integers.
    I dont really understand the connection between
    n those numbers and the content of index.html.The read is returning an int that corresponds to the code representing the letter in the file. The write() writes this out as a byte corresponding to the character also. println() sees it is an int, converts it to a String, and prints the String corresponding to the int value, appending a line separator.

  • Capturing System.out messages

    Hey all,
    Just wondering what the easiest way to capture System.out messages of a process, and store these messages in an Array, Vector, or a Buffer where I could read these messages line by line later?
    Basically one process System.out.println()'s information I need to use as a variable for a second process. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • BPC 5.0.502  BPC Web Error Message: Exxception of Type System out of memory

    In the process of updating a web page in the content library, page crashed received an error message of "Exception of type System out of memory.  Exception was throw".  What does this mean?  We are now unable to open this sheet without receiving the prior message.  Any remadies would be appreciated.

    Hello,
        Did you receive this specific error message only managing that web page or for all pages?
        Did you try to stop all COM+ components on the application servers(on each if you are using more). It looks to be related to some memory problems.
        If the problem is related to a specific web page, the problem can be related to the content of that web page.

  • Compile error when using System.out

    Hello,
    I have a static part (declarative, comes within <%! %>) inside a jsp. When i use System.out.println inside this, it throws me error. Let me know what is the reason for the same.
    Thanks, Aravinth

    Hi Aravinth.
    You it self told that <%! %> is a declarative statement then how you can give a output statement.
    <%! %> It includes only declarative statements.
    And also System.out.println can't be used in Jsp since it is a implicit object.out is already declared is jsp as implicit object.You can use it as out.println();in <%%>.
    Try to avoid scriplets in jsp.

  • JAXB Unmarshaller and errors to system.out

    Hi!
    I'm using JAXB in a complex XML binding project. The question is: is there a way to prevent javax.xml.bind.Unmarshaller to send to system.out the warnings/errors messages as DefaultValidationEventHandler: [ERROR]: bla bla bla
    which are sent immediately before to throw an UnmarshalException??
    Thanks so much!!

    Have you tried using System.setErr() and System.setOut() ? With these calls at the start of your application, you should be able to redirect the error to a file or whatever you want.

  • I have jave 7 I'm trying underscore option in String.   as String strNum = "1000_000";System.out.println("..abc..."  Integer.parseInt(strNum)); but getting error. could you please help in this?

    Hi,
    There is a new feature added in java 7 on integer, called as underscore '_" and it is working fine
    if it is a normal int variable  but if it is coming with String jvm throw the error.
    if  any one of you have java8 installed on your PC can you check this is working on that version.
    int a = 1000_000;
    String strNum = "1000_000";
    // System.out.println("..abc..."+ Integer.parseInt(strNum));
    System.out.println("a..."+a);
    Thank you,
    Shailesh.

    what is your actual question here?

    I have been trying to work on my homework all afternoon, via NAU's blackboard system. I am continuously getting booted out of the system, with an error stating "Data execution prevention". How can I prevent this from continuing?

    If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
    If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
    As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.
    If there are specific tasks you need help with:

    Is a good resource.

  • Large file read in, system out error!

    the following method simply reads 6MB text file by each line.
    After reading a line, separate the line with '\t', and obtain 2 tokens.
    After getting 2 tokens, synthesis the 2 tokens into another string token.
    Sythesized token is displayed with System.out.println().
    However, I can't have all contents from the input file, and I can't dispaly all of them in monitor screen, either.
    What's wrong with my code?
    PS: each line of the input file is structured by "key\tcontent\n" , and the number of lines is 400000.
    ===========
    public void makeDictionary(){
    String line;
    try{
    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader( new FileReader(filePath));
    while( (line = in.readLine()) != null ){
    String key;
    String content;
    int index = line.indexOf('\t');
    key = line.substring(0, index);
    content = line.substring(index+1, line.length());
    System.out.println( key + "\t" + content );
    System.out.flush();
    in.close();
    catch( Exception e){}
    }

    Thank you for your answer.
    I can't enough thank you.
    Actually, I used try..catch structure for my code, however I didn't get any message from catch block. In addition to this, the process didn't stop; in other word, the process was going on while doing nothing. I monitored the utilizaton of CPU and memory. The utilization of CPU was 100%, but after a while, it was 0%, even though process was still alive. The state which the process was doing nothing continued forever.
    Frankly speaking, I used this code for constructing my own data structure from a large text file. While debugging my code, I realized that the method, readLine() of BufferedReader class didn't load all the data of the input file, so I made the code for testing.
    Anyway, I am just fully depending on your answer. Please help me!!!!
    Your quick response will be appreciated.

    Thanks for the guidance and the explanations. I've improved my code according to your recommendations (1, 2 &3) and it compiles just fine.
    However, the println still doesn't work...but there is improvement:
    When I run my applet using the AppletViewer at the very end I get a log of what happened...and it's now showing:
    "D:\JBuilder8\jdk1.4\bin\appletviewer.exe Booking.html
    total cost of your selection is: 0"
    Which means that the println is being called but is not printing where it should be (on my screen)....the other problem is that it is obviously not properly calculating the total cost since it shouldn't be 0.
    Here is my new (improved) code, and below is the code for the Courses class (which does some of the calculation):

  • Is there a way to force System.out.println to run when called

    I working on my first threaded program and having a hard time debugging. I've used System.out.println to let me know what's going on but due (I assume) to the nature of threads the output is not sequential. Is there a way to force println to execute immediatly so that they show up in the order they were called?
    Thanks --- Mike

    endasil, Thanks for the reply. I'm currenlty running the program from within the NetBeans IDE. It is the output displayed by in NetBeans "output" that I'm looking at.
    --- MikeI don't use Netbeans, but I would guess that it too pipes Standard Out and Standard Error to the same console. You didn't address my comment. Are you printing to System.err as well? This happens implicitly if you use Exception.printStackTrace(), for example.

  • System.out not working on eclipse

    Greetings...
    I am no longer a newbie on Java, but I have been facing an issue lately that I have been unable to resolve myself, even though it seems to be something so silly.
    I have been using eclipse for development, and by developing a simple "Just to practice" code I have found myself unable to use System class or any of its methods at a certain point. See the code below:
    package one;
    import java.util.Scanner;
    public ClassOne {
    public static void main (String args[]){
    Scanner reader = new Scanner(System.in); /*Works just fine here*/
    int x = 0;
    System.out.println("Type in the number of objects expected"); /*Does not work at all, like if System was something I could not use at all. Not an identifier */
    Scanner readertwo = new Scanner(System.in); /*System does not work here either*/
    }Even if I rewrite the code after that, by erasing the import statement and all other System references in the code, System does not work again.
    If anybody has ever faced the same issue and knows what I am doing wrong and what I can do to fix it, I'd really be grateful.
    Thanks to all, and happy 2009.

    It works on NetBeans.
    On eclipse I get the following error:
    ERROR: JDWP Unable to get JNI 1.2 Environment, jvm->GetEnv() return code = -2+
    *JDWP exit error AGENT_ERROR_NO_JNI_ENV(183): [../../../src/share/back/util.c:820]*+
    The funniest thing is that if copy and paste the code from somewhere else into eclipse it works. What a drag!!!!
    Thank you.
    Santana TNever seen that error but it sounds to me that your Eclipse installation is screwed up!

    Hi Experts , I am currently facing problems while running restricted version copy in sap apo .. Hi, thank you for your replies, I found out few things about my servlet, and its portability
    and i have few questions, although i marked this topic as answered i guess its ok to post
    I am using javax.servlet.context.tempdir to store my files in that servletcontext temporary directory. But i dont know how to give hyperlink
    of the modified files to the user for them to download the modified files.
    What i am using to get the tempdir i will paste
    File baseurl = (File)this.getServletContext().getAttribute("javax.servlet.context.tempdir");
    System.out.println(baseurl);
    baseurl = new File(baseurl.getAbsolutePath()+File.separator+"temp"+File.separator+"files");
    baseurl.mkdirs();so i am storing my files in that temp/files folder and the servlet processes them and modifies them, then how to present them as
    links to the user for download ?
    and as the servlet is multithreaded by nature, if my servlet gets 2 different requests with same file names, i guess one of them will be overwritten
    And i want to create unique directory for each request made to the servlet , so file names dont clash.
    one another thing is that i want my servlet to be executed by my <form action> only, I dont want the user to simply type url and trigger the servlet
    Reply A.S.A.P. please..
    Thanks and regards,
