System Preferences- Desktop/Screen saver- crash EVERY TIME
Hi-
I have a brand new iMAc 24" with Leopard and all software is up to date via update as of 12 hours ago (10.5.1 etc). I have office 2004 and photoshop/illustrator but NO other software loaded. The computer is now 7 days old. Yesterday I used system preferences to change my desktop picture to something from my iPhoto library, as per normal with 10.5.1 I got one picture up and then went to change it and now EVERY TIME I try to change anything in the desktop/screen saver system preferences the application dies. I can get the desktop/screen saver page to open but as soon as I click any conceivable option on that window the system preferences application dies. I have sent about 7 crash reports to apple and see that others are describing similar (not identical) problems. Is apple going to fix this? I DID not install leopard on this computer, its BRAND NEW. The only thing I have done is to update whatever apple told me was available. HELP...
My computer was a month old when I installed Leopard (which turned out to be an adventure....), and once I finally got a proper install one of the features I explored was Desktop and Screensaver, specifically I tried the new mosaic option in the Screensaver for pictures, it seemed to work. The 10.5.1 update came out, a bit later I tried that Screensaver option again and not only did it not work, but it crashed System Prefs. I ended up trashing every plist and cache file having to do with System Prefs, Screensaver, and iphotomosaic in my home ~/Library folder. Oh, and in searching for them they managed to crash the Finder too. So take a look thru ~/Library, especially Preferences, be sure to also look in the ByHost folder, and you might also check the Caches folder. Remove all files you can find that have to do with System Prefs, Screensaver, and Desktop. Once I did that all was fine again with my System Prefs. The mosaic option even started working again.

How can I open System Preferences Sound without it crashing every time?
I'm trying to change my sound preferences so that I can play audio through the HDMI output. However everytime I click Sound, it crashes.
Does anyone know of a possible solution to this problem?

My system worked normally but after I installation CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 Firefox crashes every time I try to open it. I've tried disabling plugins and add-ons but with no success. Reinstallation of Firefox hasn't helped. But as I this has happened to me on a couple of other computers too, I've been able pin point the source of problem to installation of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 (and earlier versions, too).
Firefox can be opened without problems in safe mode or in Windows XP SP3 compatiblity mode. Does Firefox use some different system components then?
I am using 32-bit Windows7 and latest version of Firefox.It is possible that the CorelDRAW program installed extra fonts on your computer and that Firefox is having a problem with one or more of them.
You can use one of these to start Firefox in <u>Safe mode</u>:
*On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
*On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
*Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

You can also do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Why do system preferences revert back to default every time computer is restarted
Cannot keep changes to System preferences. All revert back to default every time computer is restarted.
Also, all extensions, e.g. adblock, reinstall every time computer is restarted.
<Personal information edited by Host>Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:

Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.

Desktop Content Viewer crashes every time
I can't get the Adobe Content Viewer for the desktop to stop from crashing on my MacBook Air. Even if I launch it separately, outside of InDesign. Anyone know what to do about this? I've reinstalled Folio Producer tools, but to no avail and am desperate to get it to work. Thanks.
I would try deleting all versions of it (including CS6) from the Applications > Adobe folder, and then either reinstall the Folio Producer tools or just open the package and drill down (AdobeDigitalPublishing-mul > payloads > AdobeContentViewer-mul > AdobeContentViewer.air) to install the desktop viewer.

Why is my system services crashing every time I want to change my desktop background??
I want to change my desktop background and every time I try my system services crashs. I tryed to changed it for 5 times and did't work, I restarted and shut down my computer and nothing happens. Try deleting the Desktop settings file. Open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
~/Library/Preferences
Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart. Finally, open System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver, and change the desktop wallpaper -
Desktop/Screen Saver System Preferences don't work
Recently, I have gone to System Preferences- Desktop/Screen Saver, in an attempt to change my desktop picture. The preference window opens, but clicking on either the Desktop or Screen Saver button produces no results. Nothing happens. Cameron MacDonaldHi Cameron I'm not going to be much help because I too have exactly the same problem with my machine - I have tried re-installing Leopard and that makes not one scrap of difference - I have cleared out all the rubbish on the machine - no difference - sent umpteen "reports" to Apple expecting some sort of response - after all the OS is the best thing since sliced bread so they can't have many reports to deal with - perhaps its us causing the problem.

Screensaver Prefs Pane Crashing Every Time
Every time I try to open the screensaver preference pane by right clicking on the desktop and choosing the appropriate option, the preference pane fails to open, or opens and crashes. Sometimes it will manage to open if I choose the "reopen" option that's given after a crash. When I get into the prefs pane, I get a standard folder icon for the "computer name" screensaver, instead of the screensaver itelf. However, if I access this preference pane from the Apple menu, it works fine, and the screensaver is there and everything. This happens on every user account. I've deleted various preferences and caches, but I can't get it to work properly. Any help would be much appreciated.

1. It's unclear from what you wrote if you simply described your actions imprecisely, or if you have installed some third-party items that may be causing the problems. For example:1.1. If not, what are you selecting from the contextual menu that results from "right clicking on the desktop"?
If you can select more System Preferences preference panes than the "Change Desktop Background" preference from the contextual menu, this applies you've installed some third-party contextual menu item that could be causing the problem. Contextual menu items can be installed in two places:(a) Your Home > Library > Contextual Menu Items folder.
(b) Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Contextual Menu Items folder.SInce the problem affects all accounts, it would imply a third-party contextual menu item in folder (b).

There is no direct access to a preference pane from the Apple Menu, except Dock preferences via Apple Menu > Dock > Dock Preferences... Are you using Unsanity's FruitMenu?2. Assuming your actions were described imprecisely, problems opening the Desktop & Screen Saver preferences are generally resolved as follows:1. Quit (Command-Q) System Preferences if it is open.
2. Trash the com.apple.desktop.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder.
3. Trash the following files in your Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder:(a) com.apple.screensaver.xxx.plist
(b) com.apple.screensaver.screensaver_name.xxx.plist
where- xxx is an alphanumeric string, and
- screensaver_name is the name of a screen saver you have used.Whether preferences files of the type shown in (b) exist depends upon the screen saver and if you have changed its options, if any.
4. Log out, then log in or restart your Mac.
5. Empty the Trash.
6. Open System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver and make the desired changes.3. If none of the above help, Immediately after the problem occurs, check the ends of these Console logs for clues. Look for messages at the ends of the cited logs pertaining to preference panes or System Preferences.

Deleting files out of system preferences desktop background.
Does anyone know how to delete files out of system preferences>desktop & screen saver?
Some how when adding one photo to the file for the desktop background it took the entire photo file. So that instead of one photo for the file it has over 200 now. Read everything and tried everything. Still can't figure out how to delete that file from the list.
I know how to add photos or whatever to use as desktop background just no idea how to remove them from the list.

When you go to system preferences>desktop & screen savers>desktop. On the left is a window with the names of the images listed. Apple Images, Nature file, Plants file, Picture Folder, Choose Folder and so forth. The ones that come with Apple products. Not sure what all else is native to Apple.
Iv been using my own desktop background since the day I got the iBook. Normally I just get one photo or image and more it there to use. But, last week I did something different or wrong. Maybe holding a button to long, not sure. Instead of moving the one photo it moved the entire photo file. That file had over 200 (2,500x1,800 in size & over 550KB for each) and probably closer to 250 photos in it.
Way to many to be there. And I simply can't find a way to remove that file from the desktop list. I can high light it, but it doesn't delete with the delete button. I can high light it, but it doesn't change anything in system preferences banner to edit, view, etc....to remove it either. It won't click & drag to trash.
Being very careful because I don't want to delete the file and by error delete it totally off the computer. I could creat a new file with only 1 photo in it for use as the desktop background. Then try to choose that file. However, since the last big OS-X update it's been doing this. Everytime I choose a file or photo it's adding the entire file not just the 1 photo. And Iv managed to add 3 files so far to that list.

I used Cocktail to clear the system and user caches. This seemed to work once, but when I checked my preferences again, it simply showed iPhoto without folders as a choice for Desktop pictures-- back to my original problem.
I cleared caches again, and then <option>+<cmd>iPhoto to rebuild the database and caches. This may have been overkill, but in the end, it finally worked.
With 50,000+ photos, this took several hours with an early 2011 MBP @2.2GHz. -

Crash every time Windows refreshes policy
We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 box that is blue screening and crashing every time it refreshes group policy.
Computer starts up, gets to "Applying Registry policy" for a minute or so, then crashes.
I unplugged the computer from the network during startup and, without a DC to grab GP from, I get to the Ctrl-Alt-Del screen
Plugging the computer back into the network, then logging on with a domain user, we again get to "Applying Registry policy" and then crash
If I leave it unplugged from the network and THEN log in, or log in with a local user account, I can get in
When plugged back in, the computer will then reboot within a short time, presumably when the background GP refresh occurs
To test, I made a new OU, blocked inheritance on it, and moved the computer account into it
Now I can start up successfully while plugged into the network, however a domain user will still cause a crash because the user account does not have the GPs blocked
Moving the user account into the new OU also removes the crash
With no GPOs applied, the computer also doesn't crash when the background refresh applies
Disabling all startup items in msconfig doesn't affect the issue
With all of the above, I'm confident that this only occurs when Windows attempts to apply group policy. I verified that no GPOs have been changed in over a month. No other machine (server or PC) is having this issue. Restoring the registry to a version from
a few weeks back didn't help. So far, Microsoft phone support hasn't figured it out. Obviously, leaving the computer account in the test OU with inheritance blocked can't be our long-term solution. I'm at a loss over what to do next short of wiping the machine
and restoring. This is an Exchange server so I'm not looking forward to restoring that.Hi,

Desktop & Screen Saver pane won't open in System Preferences
Whenever I go to open the Desktop & Screen Saver pane in System Preferences, it won't work and I get the message "Preferences Error: Could not load Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane." Please help. Thank you very much.

The only thing I can think of might be a corrupted System Preferences .plist file
Home folder > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systempreferences.plist > drag that .plist to the desktop and try System Preferences again.....
A new plist file will be created when you open System Preferences again.... -
I was changing my desktop screen saver in system preferences>screen protection. Now it says it is "Loading Images" and won't stop. The Colourful wheel goes around for ever and It does not stop. Can anyone help me?

I have seen a lot of cases like your issue, and it's easy to solve.
First, open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair permissions. Sometimes, a permission can be damaged and it makes that an application doesn't work properly.
If that doesn't work, open Finder, select Go menu > Go to Folder, type ~/Library/Prefereces, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist" and restart -

X11 exception when loading graphics
Hello, Oracle community. It's my first post. I installed Weblogic, SOA and BAM in development mode on Linux. I'm accessing it from Windows. I managed to establish a DB connection, extract data, but there is one thing missing: the graphics. Any time i
