T410 - WinXP Pro Taskbar hangs and system takes forever to shutdown

Hi,
I've been having a weird issue with my T410. I created 3 partition on the HDD, one ntfs which i install WinXP Pro, that i downgraded using IBM recovery disk (since mine came with Win7 x86). My 2nd partition, is using ntfs with win7 x64, which i clean installed using a different license. Im reserving my 3rd partition to install my linux soon. Win7 on my machine works awesome. On the other hand, my XP is running nuts, the taskbar hangs every other minute and the system takes forever to shutdown (sometimes i just dont bother to wait,i'd just force shutdown). After I click Start>Shutdown, some of the programs will start to slowly close, and then it just hangs there. If i try to open any programs, i get an error message saying that the system has initiated shutdown, but it just hangs there for like good 5 minutes. Task manager wont open during that time too...I've tried uninstalling some programs that i thought might be distrupting the shudown to no avail. Can anyone suggest me anything else that i can do?
On the worse case scenario where i **might** need to reinstall my XP using the recovery disk again, would it be possible to keep my other partitions intact? I dont remember seeing that option in any of the IBM's that i've worked with. That option came standard with my old toshiba..
Btw, im running a T410, i5 540, 4gigs DDR3 RAM, if that helps.
Thanks
Huz

How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Check for Login Items
Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps you have listed there.
And go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash
If there's enough disk space and login items aren't an issue, launch Disk Utility. The startup disk may need repairing.
Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Select: Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions).
If the disk needs repairing >

  • Calendar and reminders take forever to load with ios5

Since I upgraded my iPhone 4 to ios 5, my calendar and reminders take forever to load. Sometimes they crash rather than load. Any suggestions? This is extremely frustrating. By the time they load, I forget what I was going to write. Even once they open and I start entering data, they usually stall or crash during the time I am entering information (e.g. setting alerts), so it takes a very long time to enter each appointment or reminder. Help please!

I'm having the same issue.  Ay fixes?  Bought ATV today, music streams but videos don't and mirroring doesn't work either.  Start mirror and severe lag then just drops.  Been trying for couple hours. About ready to return it.

  • Using WinXP Pro 64 Beta and WinXP PRO SP2?

I could not get Games (Half life, Counter Strike, Doom) to work using my beta system. Every time I launch a game the OS gives me the DEP error. I select "allow all". Still no go.
I installed the HD from my old Pentium Based PC(as slave)which is loaded with WinXP Pro SP2 and everything else in the world. I don't have the origional CD because it was loaned to me from my company(Which is why I loaded Beta to this AMD system in the first place). I work from home sometimes. (good excuse?).
I can see all of the files in the old drive using explorer. I tried launching the games from the explorer and got the same negative results.
How do I get the correct Via, AMD, MSI, etc drivers on my XP-32 bit HD so I can boot to it?
Is There a way to run both OS at same time. This chip is hypertheading, so theoretically it acts like two processors?
I now have 3 80G HD. One with WinXP ProSP2, One, 64-bit Beta, One on SATA drive with XP Home SP2 (unregistered)lost that key too--it was a disk that came with a Dell Laptop.

    hi
you should really do a clean install for the OSes as the CPUs are differant and need differant drivers etc, most poeple who try to transfer HDDs have probs, until the re partition, format and install.
Many systems can co exist, the boot under XP 64 will find installations and form a boot screen to access them all.  Your going to need a XP CD to reinstall I fear. but then you might be lucky,  if you formatted 1 disk, loaded XP 64 bit edition and let it set the C:> drive with Boot files and drivers you might get away with it.

  • After update my Ipad3 in IOS7 , i have an issue when changing wallpaper IOS hanging and system very slow

system hanging and laggy , my IOS6 was very fast on my IPad3 , please i need solution .

When I change background or lockscreen there is a hang/pause of about 10 seconds then my iPad 3 is totally responsive again. If I hadn't read a review which mentioned this, I might have freaked out. I notice no difference is the speed of my iPad between iOS 6 and iOS 7 and my iPad is working perfectly.
Having said that, I had a disastrous upgrade experience with iOS 6 on my wife's iPad and ultimately did a factory restore. It was time consuming but once completed her iPad worked as well as mine. You might consider performing a factory reset.
The battery life of my iPad doesn't seem unchanged but depending on what devices you use with it and whether yours is WiFi only (like mine) or uses a data plan, those are two battery eaters. You should also check preferences that involve location aware applications and push notifications. I have noticed my phone is getting a bit less battery time and I'm still playing with the settings on it. My next step is turning BT off except when I'm in the car (my phone pairs to the car which is very handy).

I am running a Imac with OSX 10.7.2. the Imac is just over a year old, 27in 2.8ghz I5 with 12 gig ram... there should be no reason is take its time saving.. very frustrating..
    Any help appreciated

I installed the creative suite about a year ago, and this just started happening last weekend. I didn't think it would be a problem and that it would last for a day since I was working on InDesign all day and Illustrator and it usually goes away after I finish using the programs. But this has been occurring for about a week now and has not gone away. and yes the other programs are running slow. I was trying to resize some images for a client and Photoshop was acting extremely slow  when I was trying to resize the image and also place an image into a 8x10 document in Photoshop. I'm not sure how to find my system specifications.
All design programs running extremely slow and takes forever to save and sometimes shuts down randomly?

  • I have bought a computer and authorised it and transfered library to it. Trouble is most of the songs have been duplicated 5 times and will take forever to delete one at a time. Can I select delete all exact duplicates in one go??

My new computer runs windows 7. I have transfered my library from my old computer to the new one but the library songs are duplicated 5 times.  How do I remove the exact duplicates easily without deleting every one individually.  When I am satisfied with the new computer and the itunes do I then de authorise the old one.

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

  • To "control/select" a group of emails and delete takes forever

when using 'select/control' to group a number of emails for deletion it takes forever to select (7-8 seconds) and to delete takes just as much time. It makes cleaning up email data very troublesome. I have to go to my provider, Windstream, and delete email on their platform.

  • ARD 3 is acting slow and lists take forever to populate

I ran ard2 on a PowerMac G5 with no problems, but now i have an intel iMac with ard3 and it's a beast. My lists take forever to load, and when they finally do they often drop out (then reload, then drop). When adding computers to my lists the verify always fails (yes, i am using the correct user and pw) but i can add them anyway, so it's not a big deal, just annoying. Any suggestions.

    Hi all,
Here are a few tips to minimize Apple Remote Desktop freezing on you:
    1. Don't verify the username and password before adding a machine. Uncheck
the box on the add computer dialog box for verifying the username and
password for the computer. For some reason verifying seems to freeze up a
lot even when you have the correct username and password. If you
accidentally start to verify, click on the "Stop Verify" button and then
click on "Add Anyway". This will let you add computers much faster and
minimize the chance for a lockup.
    2. Minimize your user of the scanner as much as possible. The scanner seems
to be the main thing that locks up the program. If you already have your
computers put into lists, avoid using the scanner and go straight to the
list. Try to get all of your computers into lists as soon as you can.
Now note I am working in a school where we have over 400 ibooks in one building and we have 10 builds to keep on top of. The ARD does lock up all the time on my computer but looking at the status of my macbook I am using a page file of 4.5gb on average and my free ram is under 5mb out of 512mb of ram on my mac book.
Please if anyone finds a better way of making our Apple Remote Desktop work pass, it on I would love to know.
Also all 6 techs are having the same issue.

  • System takes forever to load tabs or update tabs. I have to stop a tab from uploading in IE to refresh.

opening Firefox seems to take a while. After it opens it takes forever to finish loading my Yahoo home page. Opening a second tab to get to anything else will not happen until the first tab quits cycling.
I can not play Pandora on a tab because it stops it whenever I do anything on another tab.
CPU usage for Firefox stays at 85%+. Memory is not an issue. I am running XP.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
    *Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
    *Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Safari and Mail take forever to launch!

My Safari and Mail apps take forever to launch-approx. 15-20 seconds. Other web-based apps are fine, like Firefox, Camino, etc. What's the story? Thanks.

    Hello Dubso1,
First of all, welcome to the Apple discussions.
First quite both applications, Mail an Safari. Now go to Home>Library>Caches
Trash the Mail an Safari cache folder completely an empty the trash can.
Now relaunch Safari again an lets see if it is quicker now ...
Let me know if so ...
    Good luck ...

  • Quicktime X is incredibly slow and previews take forever to load

Quicktime takes forever to load an MKV (Perian installed), but also takes its sweet time with other longer vidoes. Finder Previews (off to the side in column view) take forever to load, with QTserver (I think that's the process) taking up huge cpu resources while doing so.
I want to love Quicktime, I really do. It looks great. But its performance is just utterly frustrating at times. I don't know what happened but I never had these problems with Quicktime 7.
Why the does Quicktime behave like this?

    http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2009/08/mac-os-x-10-6.ars/6#qtkit
You don't have to use the X version of QuickTime on your Snow Leopard machine. You can use QuickTime Player 7.6.3 if you like.

  • Intensive slider control use may lead to LabVIEW hang and system instability when coupled to event loop "Value Change"

Occasionally, over the past year or two, I have noticed on different machines and versions of LabVIEW (8.0 and 8.5) that intensive operation of the LabVIEW slider control (holding down the left mouse button and shaking the mouse quickly back and forth to move the slider for several seconds) may cause LabVIEW to hang with high CPU usage (50% on my current test machine, which has a Pentium IV "hyperthreaded" processor, so 50% is the max that a single thread can take up). In some instances, after the LabVIEW process is forced to quit, the system itself becomes unstable (more high CPU usage) or hangs, up to and including the need for a hard restart. I have seen this behavior both when handling slider change events the "old fashioned" way with a while loop and a case structure; and also when using a while loop with an event structure handling the "Value Change" event for the slider.
Attached is an .rtf file dump of the front panel and block diagram of a simple test VI that replicates this problem in my hands (using an event structure). The loop count runs to at least several hundred iterations before the crash occurs.
At least for the "old fashioned" loop handling method, adding a forced wait of a few dozen msec per loop didn't seem to be a workaround. I haven't tried this idea with the event structure, but don't expect joy to follow. The possibility of a system hang discourages aggressive experimentation.
Is this a known issue? Can anyone else replicate it (carefully)? In any case, I'd welcome other suggestions for workarounds.
    Thanks,
    Darin Nelson

    Hang Slider.rtf ‏683 KB

Thanks for all your responses, and especially to those who are waggling their mice around trying to reproduce this. I'll respond to (most aspects of) the last several posts in one message.
    LabViewGuruWannabe:
I'll see if I can get the original code to post in a separate message, I posted the .rtf originally because I thought there might be filtering on forum posts (I'm sort of new here). But I doubt you re-created it wrong.
The "more modern" test hardware was an Intel Core2 , 2.4 GHz, 2Gb RAM, on an Intel 965 family motherboard. As I said, it took me two tries to trigger the error on this hardware; in the case where it triggered, I was at almost 12000 iterations before things went south. 10000 iterations, therefore, might not be enough--or you might never get it, for all I know. My Pentium 4 Hyperthreaded machine (3.2 GHz, 2 Gb RAM) triggers the hang much more easily (always within 2500 iterations, usually within 1000), so there seems to be some hardware dependence here. Maybe the workaround is just to use hardware recent enough that no one not under the influence of strange compulsions will accidentally trigger the hang.
    TonP:
After reading your suggestion, I tried something even more radical  -- getting rid of the handling code altogether. I took the slider node out of the while loop, and removed all code inside the "Slide" case of the event structure.
On my Pentium 4 machine, the hang triggered after 677 iterations.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 crashes and system shuts down while rendering

    Hi All,
Good morning everyone, my system shuts down while rendering using Adobe media encoder from premiere pro. I have tried the following:
    1.Completely removing CS4 and reinstalling.
    2. Updating all the video drivers.
    3. Re installing the Operating System (XP and Vista)
But the issue persists, i have attached the crash report and any thoughts are highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Vincent

A number of problems pop out of your DXDIAG:
Both your video driver and your audio driver are more than 3 years old.
Your F drive is slow, because of the fill rate of 90%. You lack other hard disks.
You have Matrox, BlackMagic, Nero, Sony, DivX and other stuff installed. It has been a long time ago that I have seen such a long list of DirectShow filters installed.
Suggestions: Update your drivers, clean up your F drive and add another disk, remove all that Matrox stuff, possibly include BlackMagic and Sony.
What export/encoding settings do you use from what sequence settings?
