T43 lost USB and freezes

Hi there,
My T43 2668-46U running XP SP3 all of the sudden lost USB's and starts freezing.
For some reason after no problem of 4 years working period a week ago I lost power in all two USB.
Dafter a few days the system after working for around 15 minutes freezes.
I found strange that when I push down a little a touched area it start running but after a few seconds stop again.
I did all (software tool) checks available from Lenovo and results do not show any problems.
Everything is fine in Device Manager - no problems with USB shown.
No more clue what to do.
Any help and suggestion welcome.

The SouthBridge chip is connected to the rest of the board by hundreds of tiny solder balls. As a result of a number of heating/cooling cycles, the connection breaks. Re-balling is done by removing the chip, replacing the balls and exposing them to a proper attachment process. This is not a DIY procedure.
Any T43/p board will work in any T43/p shell. There is one limitation: machines with Intel graphics (model numbers starting in 187x) can't drive a 14" SXGA+ LCD so you'd need a board with ATi X300 graphics chip. Everything else is plug and play.
Good luck.
Cheers,
George

  • T43 - Lost USB and wireless after full system restore

    Hi,
I've been struggling to get my work system back online for two days now.  It's a T43 which had become unbearably slow so after 3 years I decided to blow it away and use the system restore to set it back to factory.  However as seems to be the case all around, factory in this case means...nothing works and you have to manually install all of the drivers.
I upgraded my bios to 1.29 and embedded controller to 1.06
I installed drivers for every device and after a full day of futzing finally rid my device manager of unknown devices (mostly)  Here is a shot of it...
    Device Manager
However the most troublesome things have been wireless and USB.  Given that I had no idea which wireless device was in my system I tried updating the driver through device manager and pointed it at each of the three available wireless adapters on the Lenovo T43 drivers page.  The first two I tried were rejected, but the third one took and the device finally started.  However, when I point it at my wireless network it just keeps switching back and forth between "Not Connected" state and "Aquiring address state".  I finally disabled it.  This device worked fine as did my wireless hub prior to the system restore.
Worst of all however is my USB.  After first doing the restore, all of the USB host controllers were unknown.  I could find no specific driver for them on the Lenovo site so I just right clicked on each of them and selected "update driver" and let it find whatever it could for them.  Low and behold they all popped right up one at a time and were identified along with the root hub.  At that point two new unidentified "other devices" were enumerated, one being my printer and the other my USB Western Dig backup drive.  The hard drive's power turned on indicating a signal from USB, however it never popped into the list of available drives in My Computer.   I was able to install the Samsung printer drivers from CD which took the printer out of the list of  "other devices", installed USB printing support, and set up the printer in the "my printers" directory.  However I can't print to it.  Print jobs just sit in the queue and the printer acts like nothing is happening.
It's terribly frustrating because all of my backed up work and environment settings is stored on my USB drive.  If I can't get USB working again, I'm in serious trouble.  Thus far, I've tried disconnecting the devices and reconnecting (it makes a system ding but nothing else happens).  I've tried uninstalling all USB devices from the manager and then doing a scan to reinstall them again.  Both times I've tried this, the devices once again come up as "other devices" and I have to repeat the earlier steps to get them property identified.
I can't find any excuse at this point these devices not to be working.  Can anyone please offer any further suggestions?  If I was unclear about anything I'll be happy to clarify the problem.  I'm despertate to get this thing working again fast.
    Thank You !!
    Solved!

OK, let's try the older one:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-62875
You may want to delete the entire Win subfolder before installing it, though.
Now, honestly, I don't quite understand why recovery disks would skip this driver. I've restored hundreds of T43/p machines and have never encountered such an issue.
    Good luck.

  • Testing iscsi and ocfs2: lost packets and freeze tests

I have iscsi , ocfs2, asmlib installed on Centos4 (based upon j.hunter's article on building an iscsi/rac system). I am trying to confirm that these layers are functioning correctly and will not pose problems when clusterware/asm/rac is installed.
What do you think of these test results?
    1. simultaneoulsly copying files from each node to the iscsi shared storage causes lots of lost packets and one of the 2 nodes will spend most of its time blocked by the other.
    2. Unplugging an ethernet cable causes the server to freeze after a few minutes. Plugging the cable back in does nothing to eleviate the hang problem.

For performance, you need to tune your core network buffers and tcp network buffers (namely the [rw]mem_(default|max) and tcp_[rw]mem values. And you need to have a Gigabit network for such performance.
For the hang situation, it looks like as if you are unplugging a SCSI device where it is not hot swappable. You can diagnose the problem using a serial console / netdump server / or Sysrq-w / Sysrq-T dumps.

  • Imac lost usb and bluetooth

Last night I accepted a OSX update on my iMac. When it restarted, it no longer had any Bluetooth capability (line through the icon) AND it would not recognize any of my USB devices connected. (Seems like there's no power going to the USB ports.) So I lost both wireless AND wired keyboards and mice, meaning I have no way to even troubleshoot. What can

If you upgraded to Yosemite then:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Work is lost after illustrator freezes and then crashes when copying over to photoshop

work is lost after illustrator freezes and then crashes when copying items over to photoshop, then when re-opening the illustrator file it gets to the end of reading the file to open then quits again? this keeps happening!

    afrill,
It seems that you file has become corrupted.
One thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way.
Here is a website where you can see whether it can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,
    http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
    and another similar website,
    http://markzware.com/adobe-software/fix-illustrator-file-unknown-error -occurred-pdf2dtp-file-recovery/
As far as I remember, the former is for Win and the latter for Mac.

  • Lost USB 2.0 card function and new startup disk issue

I have recently developed a problem with lost USB 2.0 expansion card function after my MacPro awakens from sleep. My Apple USB ports are maintained without interruption. No recent software/hardware additions but maybe a recent OS security download or Apple software update.
My USB card function returns after a reboot only to be lost again by any sleep. On reboot I now notice a ? folder prior to my Grey apple logo and normal startup. This finding occurred at the same time as the USB card issue.
I am running 10.6.8 on a dual core intel Xeon. I had previously lost this same USB 2.0 card function with sleep after a 10.5.1 install.  I think it was fixed in 10.5.2 upgrade. Tried resetting PRAM but no change. Could this be a motherboard battery failure?
    Any suggestions for me?
    John B.

I am experiencing the same issue. And I also had the same problem back at 10.5.1 as you did. I will turn off the sleep function for now, but this is ridiculous!
My system only has the internal (Apple supplied) OEM USB card/ports. Nothing installed by myself. So this is insane to think that this problem keeps popping up. Ever since I updated to 10.6.8, all of my USB connections go down after sleep. But that's not all, I cannot even connect many of our external drives to the USB ports. When I connect them, they power up, but nothing ever appears on the desktop, nor can they be found with disk utility. They connect just fine with every other Mac in our office.
This is all exactly the same as back with 10.5.1, when 10.5.2 came out the problem was solved.
    Apple, please fix this!!!

    Hello there pipem90,
Heres an article about that very issue. Check out this article named iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369.
There is more to the article but start here:
    1. Start with the iPod Troubleshooting Assistant
If you have not already done so, try the steps in the iPod Troubleshooting Assistant which applies to your iPod; this will often solve your issue.
If you're still experiencing the issue after going through each of the steps in the assistant, continue with the steps below in this article. The most likely solutions are listed below (for both USB and FireWire (IEEE 1394) iPod connections). Check each section starting from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping your iPod from appearing.
Note: To determine if your iPod syncs via USB or FireWire, check the table in the Additional Information section below.
    All the very best,

  • IMac late 2013 lost usb connection after efi smc update

    Hi
Lately i purchased a late 2013 iMac with i7 and fusion drive.
After i update to Mavericks and patched new efi and smc update,my mac start to lost usb connectiong when using, from keyboard mouse to my usb sound card, System is not freezing just the usb deviecs. have to press the power button to restart
already tried reset NVRAM and PRAM but doesnt work.

Exactely the Same issue with my iMac 27-fusionDrive3T late 2013, having USB HDs for time machine and data. I contacted the Apple support who propose first level  of support: resets SMC, hard reset and so one without success . I did several trials removing hubs, using different USB (3.0,2.0 and 1.0) and changing devices connections(direct to iMac or through USB hub). I succeeded to find a stable configuration puting audio USB speaker  directly connected to IMac. When I put this USB speaker through USB huband  launch itune music after a certain time all USB chain freeze, and by consequence no more possibility to control the iMac with keyboard, trackpad .... IMac is still working,!  The only possibility is to reboot the machine with tne reset button. Hope also this will fixe in the future OSX release!

  • USB mouse freezes after wake from sleep.

Since the 10.8.2 update my Logitech USB mouse freezes after waking up the computer from sleep or when it goes into energy save from non use. This also happens to my brand new MBPR. I tries repair permissions and reset the smc. Any suggestions?

I get a frozen mouse (Microsoft Intellimouse Optical) on my 2012 Mac Mini running Mavericks (it did it with Mountain Lion also) when waking from sleep about 75% of the time which works again if I unplug/replug it (light is on and mouse buttons work when it's frozen, but the pointer won't move).  It does this whether I use a built-in USB3 port, a USB2 hub and now also with my new USB3 hub.
However, my 2008 Macbook Pro also has an Intellimouse connected to it when docked and it NEVER freezes when waking from sleep whether using the built-in USB2 port or a Gmyle USB3 card port.  Either way, the mouse wakes fine and it's the SAME MODEL MOUSE and SAME OSX verison.  I have no idea why the inconsistency.  It ***** because "Wake on Network Activity" FINALLY works right here in Mavericks with XBMC on my Mac Mini so there's a perfect opportunity to save some electricity.  I got excited when it woke up two times in a row with 10.9.1 and set up my sleep controls only to find it wouldn't go to sleep with the Energy Savings menu because I have an external USB3.0 3TB media drive connected (at all times).  I finally found out (through more patient testing) that once the drive spun down (possibly on its own power saving timer as I'm not sure the "Shut down hard drives when possible" setting works in Mavericks; it was messed up in Mountain Lion in 10.8.4 and even though 10.8.5 fixed it, I'm not sure Mavericks is using the same code.  It doesn't seem to shut down any faster with or without the setting on and shuts off several minutes after the computer attempts to go to sleep (on a 1 minute test setting; I think WD defaults to 10 minutes in firmware).
Anyway, once that was resolved and I saw it would go to sleep eventually once the drive spun down (it will sleep instantly if I select SLEEP from the Apple menu which I find odd if it's such a big deal that it's connected....), I thought OH BOY!  I'm all set.  Then I woke it from that sleep and found my mouse was frozen again..... :-(  What a PITA to unplug/plug the mouse every time it wakes from sleep.  It's not worth it.  I'll just have to pay the extra few bucks in electricity each month I could have saved to avoid such a freaking nightmare hassle.  Why on God's Green Earth, Apple CANNOT or WILL NOT fix their darn energy savings features is just beyond me.  Instead of spending all their time making horrible horrible ugly icon/GUI updates to iOS and making it slower and slower and slower, why don't they actually fix some darn bugs in OSX for once in their lives.... I'm starting to think I should give Windows another chance I'm so annoyed right now.  But then I think about having to run a malware program and have that program update and Windows software/security updates 3x a day and I think I can just deal with the Mini not sleeping.....
I'd like to know why Apple couldn't figure out those of us with multiple monitors would want a dock on BOTH monitors all the time either (first side-mount docks wouldn't migrate and now in 10.9.1, bottom-mounted docks won't migrate here either, leaving a dock on one monitor all the time and if that's the monitor that is showing full-screen video, you lost your dock completely while the video is playing.  They finally figured out after a full decade that having a menu bar on both screens would be a good idea, but it just didn't occur to them that the same is true of the dock.  How much are they paying these guys?  Too much apparently (or is it too little to attract talented thinkers? Nah, it couldn't be since we give them feedback and they just ignore it).

  • IMac loudly whirs and freezes. please help!

I have a 27" iMac purchased November 2009. Have tried searching discussions for help but am unsure what to call the problem as it is so peculiar!
Several times an hour it makes a strange loud whirring noise (which does not appear to be a fan to me as it is not a smooth sound, sounds more like a hard drive 'thinking' possibly?? but I have no idea) and freezes until the noise stops (which generally takes anywhere between 10-30 seconds). Very frustrating as it interupts my workflow and all I can do is wait it out. It does not seem to matter how many/which applications are running. it happens when i have creative suite open but then it also happens if all i have open is chrome!
It is within warranty, however I have no time to take it to be fixed until November as I can't be without it until then, so am hoping someone will have a suggestion to help me out!
I don't know what other information would be helpful, but just in case, it has 4GB of RAM and has a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and still has about 775GB of hard drive space free.
would doing a fresh install of my OS help?
any advice you can give me would be appreciated! or point me towards an existing discussion (all i could find were people describing their whirring noise as a buzzing, and mine is definitely not buzzing)

My first thought would be the hard drive, you may not have time to get it check out until November
but think about what you might loose if you don't. Just have a great backup plan for a just
    incase scenario
If its not a harddrive, what ever you have going on is not good, as your aware of, you need to
reevaluate and think about if you lost what you have verses not having access to your files.
I assume you have contacted Apple support on the phone, to see what they might have to say
Its nothing to fool with in my opinion
    Mike

  • Macbook Pro running slow and freezing...please help?

Hi there everyone. I have a Macbook Pro that's a few years old and it started to experience some slowdown and freezing recently, which was even worse after installing Yosemite. It's mostly running slow on Safari but it seems that programs are freezing and taking way longer to open and close too. I'm not all that familiar with diagnosing these sorts of issues on Macs and was hopeful that someone could take a look at this for me? This is the EtreCheck report, and any help would be much appreciated! Thanks guys.

You may wish to read about maintenance and upkeep of the OS X, plus other
information, across several topics in this site with topics divided into Guides:
    •Tech Guides - TheSafeMac:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/
Sometimes, items may have been inadvertently downloaded by accident or due
to poor advisement, and of those some can be a cause of slowness in Mac OS X.
Also, the use of scanning antivirus software can be a cause of slow and disruptive
system issues; since antivirus for the most part is not effective due to the nature of
the Mac OS X and the inability of an AV application to have records of unknown, &
unsubstantiated or rumored issues in the wild, since few or none are known to exist.
The note in the etrecheck report of excessive Page Outs, implies directly that the
computer may need to have more RAM installed; a matching pair of higher capacity
correct spec RAM chips, could be purchased from a reputable source & installed.
As much as, perhaps 16GB in a RAM upgrade, depending on the MacBook build.
All of those red-lettered items in the report that did not load, appear to be system
parts; perhaps that may be something to investigate. Not sure why that is...
{Because today is part of a weekend, I'd suspect the time of day and weekday are
both behind the lack of an earlier reply to your post here. Also, if there have been
weather or other disruptions in the lives of those volunteers who offer help, then
maybe they've had to modify their plans around such events. Or power outages.
    We had one here for more than an hour, and everything went out. Even phones.}
So hopefully some other knowledgable readers may contribute ideas on how to
resolve the issues; troubleshooting may be helpful, and to read through sections
of TheSafeMac to see if there is any malware, adware, or other odd activity that
may point to a cause; removal suggestions for those are in that site. Also, if you
had visited any torrent or sharing sites, or downloaded free yet contaminated items
from software download sites, they could also affect your computer. There are
a few areas in that web site worth reading through.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

Sorry about the long title.....its my first post.
My kid just got a brand new iPod 5th generation (today from Santa) and it won't power up or charge. The only response is when I connect the USB and press the power button or front button the Battery appears with red line on left and lightning symbol below. There is no other response at all no matter what I do, including holding both buttons down for extended period.  My other kid got one and it works perfectly.....I have interchanged usb cables ports etc. but still no response....I would really appreciate any help.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since you have a hardware problem with the iPod. This is because as you said the same cable works with another iPod.

  • MacBook looses WIFI and freezes frequently

    Hello there!
Since a few days, my MacBookPro Mid 2009 frequently looses the WIFI connection and freezes (not both at the same time).
Both problems started to occur at about the same time, so I think there may be a connection.
The WIFI just looses connection from time to time. The WIFI symbol in the menubar stays on "connected", but when I click on the menubar icon, it doesn't show any networks and isn't connected to anyone, although the icon stays as already mentioned in the "connected" state. Turning off the WIFI from within the menubar changes to the menubar icon to the "off" state. Turning it back on again doesn't work and in the system settings it says that my WIFI is still on. The only way to get it working again is rebooting.
I guess that the freezing occurs less often than the WIFI loss. When my MacBook freezes, it freezes completely. I can't move the mouse anymore and can't change anything with the function keys (e.g. display brightness). The only way to turn it off is holding the power button for a few seconds.
I first tried reseting the DHCP-Lease, SMC and PRAM. I also checked the access rights and my SSD using the Disk Utility. My SSD seemed to be okay and the disconnects and freezes still occurred (The Disk Utility isn't able to repair to repair the file "Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html" but that doesn't seem to be a problem, right?).
I also did the basic Apple Hardware Test, no problems were found.
After restarting my Mac after another freeze, my WIFI hardware wasn't recognized anymore (cross in the menubar icon). I did the basic Hardware Test again and it still didn't find any problems. I also think my Airport Card wasn't recognized in the Mavericks System Report and the Hardware Test, but I'm not a pro, so doubts on that.
I then decide to repair my system installation because the WIFI still worked in the Recovery Partition.
After reinstalling the OS (without deleting all my personal files and apps) the WIFI worked again, but my Mac still froze and lost connection frequently.
A few hours ago I rebooted after a WIFI connection loss and my Mac instantly froze when it finished booting up.
Just about one hour ago this happened again.
I'm out of solutions now and can't find help using google. There aren't any Apple stores near my location and I also can't give away my Mac in the next few weeks. It's currently essential in my daily work and those freezes make working with it very difficult. Just buying a new one isn't a possible solution too.
I'm using 10.9.2 and didn't change anything recently. No system changing apps or anything like that and no hardware changes in the last few months.
I replaced the cd drive with a Samsung SSD a few months ago (I enabled TRIM with "Trim Enabler" by Cindori Software just yesterday) and migrated my data to the SSD. The original hard-drive is still in its place, but almost empty. I also upgraded the RAM to 8GB, but the problems still occurred when I changed it back to the original 4GB. My fan works fine and all the wires  are in place. Here's an link to the system logs from a few minutes before the last freeze. I uploaded it to my webspace, because I don't want to fill the whole threat with it, hope thats fine.
Thanks in advance to anyone out there who's willing to help,
I really appreciate your work on the forums.

I did have exactly that same wifi behavior and it ended up being the cable that connects the wifi card to the motherboard in my machine. I didn't experience the freezing with that problem though. The wifi disconnects were seemingly random, other than they also occurred when I moved the machine. One thing you might try is to shut the wifi card off altogether and use one of these.
