TAB key behavior illogical

When creating a new iCal event, after its title, the TAB key takes to the field "location" (logical, OK).
The next TAB key goes to the "minutes" in the starting date field (illogical, not OK).
From that field, hitting the TAB key takes, again to the "minutes" in the end date field (illogical, not OK).
Needed fix:
From the location field on, hitting the TAB key should take, in sequence, through all the fields as they appear in the event window.
This should be an easy fix!

Still unresolved on Snow Leopard, OS 10.6. Sad... I cannot possibly be the only one finding this "feature" disruptive in everyday's workflow.

  • JDK 1.5 - TAB key behavior no longer consistent.

    We have just upgraded from JDK1.4... to 1.5...
    Many of our Swing UI's no longer function correctly with respect to focus control when the user presses TAB or Shift/TAB. It appears that the SortingFocusTraversalPolicy.getComponentAfter() method is unable to determine the next/previous component for these screens. The majority of our screens still function normally, however, and focus control has been implemented consistently across all our screens. Is anyone else experiencing this inconsistent behavior with 1.5?
    Any suggestions?

    To get the proxy settings, you should be able to get System properties, and look at "javaplugin.proxy.*" values. I do not know how to do the auto config stuff, but everything you need is there.
    Also, how did you gain access to sun.plugin.net.proxy.PluginProxyManager? I cannot seem to compile anything referencing that.

  • Strange behavior with the tab key and multiple users

    Hello,
    I'm stuck on this problem and none of the usual trouble-shooting techniques have yielded results, so perhaps someone will point me the right direction.
    I have an Intel iMac running 10.3.9 with two user accounts, and in one of the accounts the tab key fails to advance the cursor from field to field in any application, be it a browser, mail client, etc. The tab key works otherwise, I can switch between applications using apple tab, for instance. The other user account works fine. The keyboard & Mouse preferences are identical on both user accounts. In fact, after creating a new user account it too had no tabbing from field to field either, which would seem to indicate that it is not a problem in an individual account. Repairing the permissions did not help, and even a recent archive and install failed to change this. Anyone know where to look for an answer? Thanks in advance...
    iMac 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    I did a wholesale replacement of the preferences folder from the working account to the non-working one, and after going through the welcome screens and re-setting a variety of preferences (setting up mail.app again, etc...), the tab key is functioning as expected in all applications. Thanks!

  • In the expression editor dialog box my TAB key doesn't function correctly

    This is bizarre behavior that seems to have started recently.
    In Visual Studio 2012, an SSRS project, any expression editor dialog:
    The tab key doesn't work right.
    Open the expression editor and:
    * I see a blinking cursor and I can type in the expression box.
    * If I hit the tab key, the cursor disappears and I cannot type.  I appear to lose focus in the editor but focus doesn't appear to go anywhere else in the dialog box.
    * If I hit the tab key a 2nd time, the cursor is still gone and I cannot type.
    * If I hit the tab key a 3rd time, I can finally type again and note that I am now
    3 tabstops in.  In other words it seems like the tabs were working but I lost the ability to type anything until I "tab" 3 magical times.
    I can work around this by hitting tab key then grabbing the mouse and clicking where the cursor SHOULD be which returns focus to the text area.

  • [Bug?] How to use the Tab key in forms

    Ahoy!
    The latest release of Photoshop has "broken" the native behavior of the Tab key in html panels. I'm not sure if this is a bug or just a new API I need to incorporate.
    Expected behavior:
    1. Focus into text field in a form
    2. Hit the Tab key
    3. The next field is focused.
    Actual behavior
    1. Focus into text field in a form
    2. Hit the Tab key
    3. Photoshop hides the application UI (Photoshop hotkey tab behavior).
    Anyone happen to know if there's something that can be done about this?

    Bug is very annoying for our users when they try to input their usernames and passwords to login (often) and also when they're filling out a large form with four fields in it.
    Hope it is fixed soon or a work around provided.

  • JButton gains focus when Hitting tab key but hitting Enter has no effect.

    Hi,
    I have a program that has two buttons. When pressed, using the mouse, the buttons text appears in the middle of the screen. I have NOT alerted the focus subsystem. Thus when I press the tab key the buttons are highlighted in turn, to indicate that they currently have focus. However if I press enter the buttons actions (to update the middle of the screen with it's text) does not get activated.
    I am using 1.4.2 on a Windows machine.
    any help on this would be much appreciated !!
    The code is as follows:
    package com.logicacmg.skynet.tms.mmi.ui;
    import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
    import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
    import javax.swing.JButton;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JLabel;
    import javax.swing.JPanel;
    import java.awt.BorderLayout;
    import java.awt.Container;
    public class Test implements ActionListener
    JButton bTwo = new JButton("button 2");
    JButton b = new JButton("button 1");
    JLabel label = new JLabel(" ");
    /** Creates a new instance of Test */
    public Test()
    JFrame frame = new JFrame();
    //Create a panel to hold the MMI screens.
    JPanel mainPanel = new JPanel();
    mainPanel.setLayout(new BorderLayout());
    b.addActionListener(this);
    bTwo.addActionListener(this);
    mainPanel.add(b, BorderLayout.WEST);
    mainPanel.add(bTwo, BorderLayout.EAST);
    mainPanel.add(label, BorderLayout.CENTER);
    //add the main panel which contains the screens and the status bar
    //to this frame.
    Container contentPane = frame.getContentPane();
         contentPane.add(mainPanel, BorderLayout.CENTER);
    frame.pack();
    frame.setVisible(true);
    public static void main(String [] args)
    new Test();
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
    JButton aButton = (JButton)e.getSource();
    if(aButton == b)
    label.setText("one");
    else if(aButton == bTwo)
    label.setText("Two");

    Which plaf are you using? Because when I switch to the windows plaf, the behavior is what you describe.
    Demo:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class X {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            final JFrame f = new JFrame("button focus");
            f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            ActionListener al = new ActionListener() {
                public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt) {
                    System.out.println(evt.getActionCommand());
            Container cp = f.getContentPane();
            cp.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
            for(int i=0; i<3; ++i) {
                JButton btn = new JButton("Button " + i);
                btn.addActionListener(al);
                cp.add(btn);
                if (i == 1)
                    f.getRootPane().setDefaultButton(btn);
            final JCheckBox laf = new JCheckBox("platform plaf");
            laf.addActionListener(new ActionListener(){
                public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt) {
                    String cls = laf.isSelected() ? UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName() :
                      UIManager.getCrossPlatformLookAndFeelClassName();
                    try {
                        UIManager.setLookAndFeel(cls);
                        SwingUtilities.updateComponentTreeUI(f);
                    } catch (Exception e) {
                        e.printStackTrace();
            cp.add(laf);
            f.pack();

  • Not able to use the Tab key to Tab indent when within a text edit window...

    Two questions please... First one is above for the tab function. In Safari I just need to press control+option+tab to indent a tab within a text edit box on a website. This function is being used more via cloud and mobile capability.
    Second... I can, in Safari, Copy and paste a site with tables. Works great in Safari. When I try to do this in FF I lose the formatting of the tables and it just give plain text without the tabled fields.
    I would love to use FF because the compatibility if much greater than Safari, but... I need my functionality as well to do my work to the best and quickest ability.
    Thank you

    Help About says I'm on 20.0.1
    Up until last week, I was able to use the tab key when typing emails and other multi-line text boxes.
    Suddenly the behavior of the tab key changed. This isn't the first time. It's been quite a while ago that the function of the tab key changed from indenting to moving around the page, then after some time it changed back to indenting.
    Can we get this fixed and leave it alone, please?
    I may give one of those add-ins a try, but my problem with add-ins is that they break when FF is patched or upgraded, then I'm left with out the solution they provide.
    Can we just fix Firefox, please?
    Thanks,
    Frank
    P.S. Another potential fix I came across suggested starting FF in safe mode to see if the problem goes away. It does not. It seems to be a change to FF that appeared after an update last week. On or just befor 24 Apr.

  • How to alter behaviour of pressing enter key to tab key?

    Hi! I want to alter the behaviour when pressing the enter key so it acts like pressing the tab key in a JTextField. That is pressing the enter key will transfer the cursor to the next field instead of the cursor just staying in the current field.
    Thanks in advance.
    rralilin

    Hi,
    there are more than one way to do this:
    1. use an ActionListener and transfer the focus in its actionPerformed(...) method - good for one or a few JTextFields - if there are more, try ...
    2. prelisten the key events via the new KeyboardFocusManager und replace the corresponding key event by a Tab-key-event and redispatch it - this approach enables you, to handle this new behavior for all JTextFields in one central position - possible since JDK 1.4
    Hope, this helps

  • ActiveX MS webbrowser no tab key

    Hi,
    I was successfully trying to load a web page in the MS
    webbrowser
    activeX control but the tab key is not recognized. Is there a
    way to
    jump beteween the fields of a web form when pressing the tab
    key?
    TIA

    I reserched the heck out of the same question. I could not
    find a way to get
    the tab key to do anything. I tried various things to track
    down where the
    tab key goes, but couldn't figure out how to get it to work.
    Over on
    mediamacros.com there's a behavior that has code to handle
    the tab key on a
    web browser, and I couldn't get that to work either.
    So I just used VB and made a shell for the browser. It
    actually worked
    better for everything. There was some Flash interactivity and
    something else
    that using the MS web browser in Director interfered with
    that was fixed
    using straight VB.

  • Tab key all of a sudden is Command-Tab in client windows...

    All of a sudden, whenever I use the Tab key when connected to any client, it acts as Command - Tab. For example, when I attempt to tab to another field in some form and press Tab, it brings up the open applications thing and scrolls through them. If I then press any other key, it acts as Command - "(whatever key I just typed)". If I press a k key, it acts as command - k. This only happens after pressing the tab key.
    So basically, after pressing the tab key, all subsequent key presses act as if the command key is also being held down.
    I have to disconnect and re-connect to that client to get it to stop doing that.
    I do not see anything in the prefs to help with this. I did see one other forum topic about this but there was no fix posted. Sticky keys show nothing strange is going on with my keyboard. This is definetly an ARD issue. All local tab and command keys work as expected.
    Thank you very much for any info regarding this.

    I found the issue... I use TypeItForMe, and part of the instructions for typeitforme is to turn on "Enable access for assistive devices" in Universal Access preferences. When this is turned on, in ARD when connected to a users machine and controlling it, if the Tab key is pressed all subsequent key presses act as if the Command key is also pressed.
    I have turned off "Enable access for assistive devices" and now ARD behaves normally. However, I am unable to use TypeItForMe the way it's supposed to work.
    So, not sure if it's a bug or normal behavior, but sure wish it wouldn't do that...

  • Tab Key Usage

    Tab stops are included in TLF but while editing text if the
    tab key is pressed it executes the default Flex action of switching
    to the next component. I tried searching for a attribute so I could
    use the tab key in the way a normal text editor does but I couldn't
    find anything. Are we expected to have to capture the tab key input
    and insert the tab value ourselves?

    Hi,
    The default behavior when there are no tab stops before the end of the line is to create a new line exactly as you describe.  Please verify that you've specified tab stops.
    This is even simpler than the above.
    textFlow.tabStops="tabStops="s100 s200"
    will create tabs at 100 and 200 pixels.

  • How to change enter key behavior in data grid view?

    Greetings community
    I have a simple problem. I have a table of several columns, and I want it to be editable without using a mouse. I want user to enter value in the first column, press enter key on keyboard, enter value in second column, press enter key,
    and so on. I want data grid view to open another row only when all columns in the working row are populated. However, pressing the enter key causes opening new row whenever user presses the enter key.
    I tried to set current cell of data grid view in CellValueChanged event , but it didn’t work. Actually, it really moves current cell where I want, but after that it moves it one row down.
    I traced the execution of code, and counted CurrentCellChanged events to see what happens.
    Does anyone know if there’s any way to suppress this behavior?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello,
    It perhaps be better using Tab key which is exactly used for switch focus to the next cell instead of dealing with enter key.

  • The correct approach to intercept TAB key

    Dear Experts,
    I have developed a GUI out of javax.swing. The GUI consists of JFrame, several JPanels and javax components, such as JTextField, JLabel, JComboBox, JTable and many more.
    Now, I want to change the behavior when user presses TAB key. By default TAB key moves focus from a component to another component. How can I disable this?
    I come to two alternatives that I am not sure which one is the correct approach. Could you please advise me?
    Alternative 1.
    Use key binding on GlassPane.
    Alternative 2.
    Use event-handling on GlassPane.
    If those alternatives are not the best one, could you please provide another alternative?
    I have tried the following, but they didn't work...
    Action doNothing = new AbstractAction() {
        public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
            System.out.println("Tab-key is pressed.");
    cmbPCode.getInputMap().put(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_TAB, 0), "doNothing");
    cmbPCode.getActionMap().put("doNothing", doNothing);or
    getRootPane().getInputMap(JComponent.WHEN_IN_FOCUSED_WINDOW).put(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_TAB, 0), "doNothing");
    getRootPane().getActionMap().put("doNothing", doNothing);where cmbPCode is a JComboBox that receives focus when the GUI shows up.
    Thanks for your help,
    Patrick
    Edited by: Patrick_Stiady on Mar 31, 2009 6:51 AM

    Thank you for the advice. I am developing an application where the user is not computer literated, so that I have to limit functional key as many as possible and only allow several keys to be active. For example, I don't want TAB key to change the focus, instead I want TAB key to do nothing.
    I have tried keybinding, because I think this is the most relevant, but somehow I failed to recognize which component should be bound with keybinding. I have tried to change the input map of the component that receives the focus when the GUI is displayed (cmbPCode) as can be seen on my first post. I also tried to change the input map of the root pane. Both are not successful.
    Now, I wonder whether
    1. it does not work because the key is not consume()?
    2. Or should I use key listener, which I would only use if keybinding were unable to serve my goal?
    3. Or should I learn how to intercept key on the glass pane?
    4. Is keybinding able to nullify default action, such as changing focus by TAB key? I am asking this, because I'm going to nullify other important key such as ENTER key.
    Thank you for any guidance,
    Patrick

  • Make Forms "Tab Key" accessible

    Hey there,
    I just created a whole bunch of meta data sets and it was a little annoying that it is not possible to simply advance to the next (form) field using the tab key (or an arrow key for that matter).
    Although that may be a Windows GUI problem, but if not, fixing that would be awesome.

    Hi -
    Go to Safari Preferences>Advanced and select "press tab to highlight each item etc.". That ought to restore the tab behavior you are looking for.

  • Navigating forms - tab key

    My tab key has suddenly changed behavior when filling out web forms. It still works to move from one form element to the next... But when I get to a text field, hitting tab actually inserts a tab instead of moving to the next form element.
    If memory serves, this is not how the tab key used to work -- it used to move you from one form element to the next, no exceptions. Anybody know how to get this behavior back?
