Table of contents Heading

Dear Support Community,
I am writing a report. I added a table of contents. When my TOC was shorter than one page, the heading of the whole TOC stayed where it was - above it.
But when I add enough headlines for the TOC, that it gets longer than one page, the TOC jumps over to the next page. The heading stays where it was.
How can I fix my headline, so that it stays directly over the TOC? The TOC itself is perfect, I just have to write Table of contents over it. I can't move it.
Thank you for your help!

There is no easy or elegant way to do this as far as I know.
ID uses paragraph styles to generate the TOC, so each paragraph becomes a new listing. You can gain the appearance of two paragraphs in the running text while having only one buy using a forced line break (Shift + Enter) betweent he heading and sub-heading, which will combine the two into a single listing in the TOC, but you will still need to replace the line breaks with your choice of separator (you used a tab in your example, but I might pick an em space) after the TOC has been generated. That's easy to do with Find/Change.
Styling becomes a bit more of an issue when you work this way if the sub-headaing has a different format from the main heading. You must apply a character style to one part or the  other to change it, and you almost certainly need to do that using a nested style rather than applying the character style by slecting the text, or worse, selecting text and applying local changes. Because formatting applied as a nested style is part of the paragraph style definition it is not carried into your TOC if you use a different paragraph style inside the TOC, but manually applied styles and local formatting are preserved as overrides to any style applied inside the TOC.
The other typical approach to this problem is to add a non-printing bit of text with a unique paragraph style set up for the purpose, and to use that style instead of the heading/subheading styles to make the TOC. Your non-printing text should be entered exactly as you wish it to read in the TOC. I personally like to use and anchored object for this so it will move with the headings, and you can stick it up in the top margin out of the way. I usually make this red, too, so it is obvious to anyone editing the file.

  • Cdparanoia 004: Unable to read table of contents header

Hi. I've been trying to rip wavs with grip but it was unable to locate any audio cd even though I could explore it from my desktop (xfce 4.10) and I am part of the optical group. Because of this, I tried running cdparanoia from the terminal.
Running the next command: cdparanoia -vsQ displays the next warning:

if I try to listen a track from an external application like mplayer it won't play any audio but if I manually locate the audio and choose them an application to play, they will. Also, the hardware itself is functional since I ripped music from a debian squeeze (dvd) installation.
Finally If it's useful, I used gvfs and exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4 in my .xinitrc to mount usb and other devices automatically

You removed all mailboxes (.mbox files) located within this problem account named folder at Home > Library > Mail and the same occurs when re-launching Mail?
The TableofContents file is a package file for a .mbox so it is hidden.
I'm not sure how you removed all mailboxes for this account but quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account). Move the account named folder to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and if it launches successfully without locking up and quitting, a new account named folder will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder.
All email clients have limits and the recommended size limit for a Jaguar or Panther mailbox is 1GB and for Tiger Mail, 2GB.
An "overstuffed" mailbox issue can occur at any mailbox size (which means the mailbox has some corruption and/or is over the recommended size limit) but is more likely to occur depending on the number and size of message attachments contained in a mailbox and especially as a Jaguar or Panther mailbox approaches or exceeds 1GB in size.
Since an account's Inbox mailbox is usually the most active mailbox, it is not a good idea to use an account's Inbox mailbox as the final storage location for all received messages not deleted.

  • Table of Contents help required

    Hello,
I'm writing a dissertation and need to include a TOC. I have it inserted and roman numerals for the pages before the intro, but I have an Abstract and Acknowledgements before the table of contents. Each is using the same heading style as all my other headings through the document.

I am also using the same heading for the table of contents heading, how do I add that to the contents?

  • How to indent second line in a very long heading when creating a table of contents?

I need to make a table of contents.
Some of the chapter headings are very long and fill more than a single line.
When I create my table of contents, I want the second lines to be 'pushed in' in the table.
    Like this
    1 chaper one xxxxxxxxxxx
    2 Chapter two xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
3 Chapter three x xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
         xxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx
    4 Charpter four xxxxx xxxxx
5 Chapter five xxxxxxxxxx xxx xxxxx xx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
         xxxxxxxxx xxxx xxxxx
I thought I had solved it by having the actual chapter headings indented like this, but the table of contents overlooks this/overrules this.

  • Table of Contents / Bookmarks Jump to Middle of Page Instead of Heading

I generated a Table of Contents in InDesign, but when I export to the PDF and click on either the actual text link in the table of contents or on the bookmark in the lefthand column, it jumps to the middle of the page that the article is on instead of to the heading. I want the bookmarks to go to the heading (as a text anchor) instead of to a page. Anyone know how to fix this?
    FYI: I'm using CS3
    Thanks!

Use PDF Maker and be sure you have the preferences set to create bookmarks from the style info.

  • How do I make a multi-line heading show up as a single line in the Table of Contents?

I'm writing a document where the headings often have a line break in them for the sake of formatting. When I generate a Table of Contents, they show up as two entries on the same page instead of as a single heading.
For example, if I have a section like:
    Oh My God
You're Totally Not Going to Read This Section
Section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, section text, etc.
Then in the table of centents it shows up as something like:
The Section Before That Section You're Not Going to Read ... 14
    Oh My God .................................................. 17
You're Totally Not Going to Read This Section .............. 17
The Section After That Section You're Not Going to Read .... 20
When what I really want is a Table of Contents like this:
The Section Before That Section You're Not Going to Read ... 14
Oh My God You're Totally Not Going to Read This Section .... 17
The Section After That Section You're Not Going to Read .... 20
(Actually, I have a bunch of sections with titles like this all in a row, so it looks much worse than in the example.)
How do I do this: Get the Table of Contents to ignore the carriage return in the middle of the section header?

Try a Soft return, Shift + Return, instead of Paragraph break.

  • Table of Contents Not Picking Up HEADER text

I have a number of sections in my Pages 5 document. I have unique headings in the Header for each section and have applied a paragraph style to these - HEADING 1. However none of the HEADING 1 headings are appearing in the table of contents. I have HEADING 1 ticked in the TABLE OF CONTENTS window on the right hand side of the Page 5 window.
It feels like a bug or does TABLE OF CONTENTS not pick up paragraphed style text from the header?

    Very odd!
Seems Pages 5 all you do is chase rabbits down rabbit holes.
I like being able to do T.O.C.s for every section but with all the other downgrades in Pages 5 it isn't worth fighting.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder and just works, much better than its "upgrade".
Wait for Pages 5 to get out of beta and rate/review it in the App Store.

  • How to remove Heading 4 from Table Of Contents

    HI,
how can i remove Heading 4 from the Table Of Contents in Word 2007?
I needed to create the Heading 4 (built in themes only go to level 3) by myself (it was very complicated) but finally managed to get it to work.
The problem is that when i view the properties of my theme it has the following attributes:
Font: Not Bold, Indent: Left:  1,9 cm, Hanging:  1,14 cm, Space Before:  6 pt, Style: Linked, Quick Style, Based on: Heading 3
The built in themes however have it different:
Indent: Left:  1,27 cm, Hanging:  0,89 cm, Level 3, Style: Linked, Quick Style, Based on: Heading 2, Following style: Indryk3
There is a parameter called "Level"which my theme does not have. When i create the Table Of Contents and set "Show levels" to 3 then it will display FOUR levels (three built-in and my Heading 4).
Please help. How to get the "Level" parameter to appear for my theme as well?

    Hi
Thanks for your answer. The only invisible character is the section break thing at the very top of the blank page. I can't figure out how to place it directly after the Table of contents. If I remove the section break, the Table of Contents merges with the following section, which is not what I want at all.

  • How do I include the heading of the table of contents in the table of contents?

I am preparing a table of contents in InDesign CS3 (Macintosh OSX 10.5.8)
I have added all the paragraph styles to the list of paragraph styles I want to appear in my Table of Contents.
However, I would also like the table of contents itself to appear in the table of contents:
In case the table of contents is placed on page 3, it want it to look like this
    Table of contents:
    Title page....page 1
    Acknowledgements...page 2
    Table of contents ...page 3
    Table of figure...page 6
    Chapter 1...page 10
    and so on..
I have included the paragraph style in the list of paragraph styles I want have appearing in my table of contents. But this does not result in an entry in my table of contents that is named 'table of contents'.
I would be grateful for any kind of advice.
    Thanks in advance

To do that add a non-printing frame on Page 3 and add the words Table of Contents using one of your styles that gets picked up.

  • Creating a Table of Content (toc)

    Hi
I am very new with Output designer, so please dont mind if it is a silly question.
I have to create a PDF report which has around 15-20 sections. I need a toc (table of content) at first page and at the specified position with page number for each section.
All the sections has some header and detail subforms, so pagenumber is not known at the begining for each sections. I am using xml file as the data file.
So can i use JFPREAMBLE to get the page number for different subforms, and write that on to the toc subform,
i did lot of mind storming but not able to resolve my problem, please help.
    thanks and regards
    nitin

    Hello,
I was able to create a TOC for a recent customer in the UK.
Took a lot of work, but it worked.
You will have to create a TDF to get the data that you require to be on the TOC, but this is quite easy. The best way is to get the TDF to output the result as a seperate file, and then get the orginal data to call the file as the first thing that you do by using the ^file command
If you would like an example please drop me a line at [email protected]

  • How do I create multiple TOC's (Tables of Contents) in one Pages document?

I'd like to have multiple TOC's (Tables of Contents) in one document. This is useful for me because I'd like to have a TOC for the regular chapters, then a TOC for the procedures, then a TOC for the tables in the document (it's a tech manual that I am writing). How can I do this? Thanks for any help you can render, and have a nice day!

    fruhulda wrote:

    Paragraph used.
It has nothing to do if there is one main TOC or several smaller TOC to do.
It isn't true that you can only have one TOC in a document. Use styles for your titles and headings. I do and it works fine without section breaks.
You also need to tick which tile and heading you want in the TOCs in the Document Inspector > TOC
    Did that.
Thanks to Yvan's quoting from the User Guide, I see where it says each TOC only indexes the material up until the next TOC. Since I had them follow each other, that is why they had no content.
Still it defeats the objective of indexing different material throughout the document if all you get is what is between the TOCs.

  • ID CS5: How to include additional text into a table of contents and how to hide text from it?

    I have the following problem:
    1. I'd like to include additional Information in my table of contents which I don't want to appear in the text I refer to.
Example: I do have a picture with a caption saying:
    picture 1: Blablabla.
And I want to have the source of the picture as additional information in the table of contents:
    picture 1........Blablabla (source: thisandthat)........23
Still I don't want this additional content to disappear, as soon as I update the table of contents!
    How can I achieve that?
    2. And how can I have this the other way round?
Let's say I want the source in the caption, but not in the table of contents.
    So the caption says:
    picture1: Blablabla (source: thisandthat)
but the table of content says:
    picture 1........Blablabla.....................23
I was trying to achieve this by two different praograph styles in the caption. One which would be listed, and one which wouldn't be listed, but this of course resulted in always having two paragraphs in the caption, which I'd like to avoid:
    picture1: Blablabla
    (source: thisandthat)
    Any solution to this?
    Best Regards,
    Rainer Schwachsinn

Sorry, missed the second part of the question. I think the only way to do that is to use invisible "dummy" text of some sort, and if you're going to do it for some entries, you might as will do it for all.
One of the easiest ways is to put the text you want inthe TOC into an anchored frame attached to the actual heading in the text (so it moves along with it). Use a unique paragraph style for this text, and include this style, not the one applied to the headings inthe text, to make the TOC. I usually use a character color of red to make it satnd oout so I don't forget it's there, and the position on the page isn't really critical. Select the anchored frame, open the Attributes panel and make it non-printing. You'll see it in editing mode, the TOC will pick it up (as will variables, if required) but it will disappear on output.

  • How can I include, in the table of content, a title that I have put on a shape?

    Hello all,
    1. I have a table of content
    2. I have added shapes
    3. I wrote text (titles. subtitles) on the shapes
    4. They do not appear in the table of content.
    5. They only appear in the table of content if they are not on a shape.
    Pages 5.5.2
    Can you help?
    Law

    Hi Law,
Text in a shape or a text box will not feature in the table of contents.
To get a colour behind your titles, type them into your document (not a shape). Format as Heading or some other paragraph style the TOC will recognise.
Select the title text and Format Panel > Text > Font > Gearwheel > Advanced Options.
Choose Character Fill Color and choose a colour from the palette (left) or colour circle (right).
Example Titles (all on the same page for a smaller screen shot).
Chapter 3 (in a coloured Text Box or Shape) does not appear in the TOC:
    Hint for cheats :
To give the titles a wider Character Fill Colour, add some Tab characters before and after.
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • Creating a Kindle-friendly table of contents with pages

I'm trying to figure out how in Pages (I just recently bought it and want to use it instead of Word) to create a Kindle-friendly table of contents, so readers can click on a chapter title and go straight to that chapter, for the fiction I want to publish on Kindle. In Word I right click on Heading 1 while the chapter title is highlighted then click Update to Match Selection. Then I create a hyperlink to that chapter title to its corresponding title in the table of contents. This does not work in Pages. Do I need to use the hyperlink option in Inspector? If so I don't know how.
And does anyone know how I can create what Kindle calls "Guide Items", where Kindle users can go to from anywhere within the book?
I suppose I can write everything in Pages and then set up the table of contents and guide items in Word but it would be nice to be able to do it in Pages, thanks.
    Lyle

Well there is a standard body for EPUB - http://idpf.org/epub
And, Apple furnishes the TEMPLATE - the Pages 09 TEMPLATE - automatically (supposedily) makes the TOC links which - then - you can export to EPUB.
Again, the problem I'm daling with is that the Kindle for the iPad, does not see the TOC. It des see it in the Kindle Softward for the Mac - which is different - for some reason. I have authored two books on Pages but Amazon converts my EPUB file to fit the Kindle device itself.
