Table of contents problem - order incorrect

Hi
I have a document that contains about 50 tables, often with several on a page.  I have created a TOC list for these tables which works correctly throughout most of the document. However on a few of the pages the order of the generated TOC is incorrect (ie the entry for table 10 will appear before the entry for table 9) despite table 9 being before table 10 on the actual page. Incase the x position of the tables on the page has an influence I have set all the tables to have the same value.
If anybody has any ideas why this is happening I would be grateful to hear them.
Cheers
Brian

Have you found a solution to this?
If its appearing like my example below i have a possible solution...
A1. Title
A2. Title
A. Section Heading
A3. Title
A4. Title
I had that problem and found it was due to the position of the items on each page...
On a page with 2 colums A1 & A2 were in the left column, A3 & A4 in the right column... BUT my section heading was RIGHT aligned... not left... so the TOC uses the alignment of the headings for the order of items... so it saw A1 on the left up the top, A2 underneath, THEN my section heading top right, then A3 and A4 below it... make sense?
Basically if your heading or toc item isn't further left and above the next TOC on the page your refering to... it wont pick up the order correctly!
hope that makes sense

  • Table of contents problems

I am trying to convert a document from Word to Pages. I've run into a some table of contents problems that I know how to solve in Word, but which apparently cannot be solved at all in Pages.
    1. I need to make several entries differ from the paragraph text. For example, I have a heading that reads "PROGRAM THEME: MUSIC IN AMERICA AND BEYOND." I need it to read simply "Theme."
    2. The paragraph text is all caps. I need the TOC entries to be in title case.
I can do these things easily in Word. But I really dislike Word and would like to use Pages. Is there any way to do these simple things?

I can't help with the TOC as I've not had a need to use one since I've been using Pages. I can help with the title case. Go to my iDisk & download Pages Title Caps.scpt. To add the AppleScript menu in OS X 10.4.x or 10.5.x, go to Applications > AppleScript and launch the AppleScript Utility application. The option to "Show Script Menu in menu bar" is activated from there. You can put the downloaded script in the Scripts folder in either the main HD > Library or in your user Library.

  • Table of contents problem?

    Hi there
I have a document that two layouts, one is for the iPad.  To create the new one, I chose to copy the styles and link the stories from the original.  I want to publish the iPad layout, but am having problems understanding the Table of Contents.
The original document had a TOC set up, with PDF bookmarks.  When I create the new alternative layout, the TOC page in the new layout, which has the linked content from the original layout, works fine.  But as the content is altering slightly, I need to create a new TOC, pointing to the styles used on the alternate layout.
The trouble is that when I publish the new guide, the TOC does not work at all.  It goes to the last page of the document.
Does anyone know why this approach would not work?  Is it something to do with the PDF bookmarking, i.e. go to layout 2, page 4 for instance, but when published it thinks it's going to (page count of first layout + another 4 pages)?? Confusing, but I don't know why this doesn't work?
Can anyone suggest a fix for this?
(I don't want to separate the documents, as it's far too much work for the end result and I could do with publishing these without significant changes for now... just want to get the TOC working... without doing it manually)
    Thanks!

What works for PDF doesn't necessarily work for DPS. In DPS, when you create a link to another article, you use the navto:// command, which you can read about here:

It sounds like you're just getting started with DPS. Here are some learning resources that will help.

  • Table of Contents Wrong Order

    Hi there,
Can anyone help me out with this issue? I have a table of contents set up here, but the subtitles are showing above the Chapter titles instead of below.
I given them the appropriate levels-Units(level1), Chapters(level2), Subtitles (level3). So I'm not sure why they are appearing in the wrong order. For example, 4.1 should be right under Chapter 4 before 4.2.
    Please advise,
    Thank you!

    Thanks Peter!
Does this mean that I need to move the Chapter titles to the right so they are at least aligned or more to the left than the subtitles? Is there another way to do this?
I believe below photo shows the layout concern you mentioned.

  • "Create Link" in table of contents being overwritten?

    Hello community,
I'm using Acrobat X. Just one item in my table of contents is linking incorrectly. I've deleted the link and tried making new ones by:
Using the Link tool under Tools > Content.
Right-clicking the text and selecting "Create Link."
For some reason the link keeps taking me past the heading I want and onto the start of the following page. Text is about 2/3 of the way down on the page. I can link anywhere else in the document just fine -- even higher up on the same page. Just not around this one particular heading.
Any ideas why this is happening? It's driving me mad.
    Thanks in advance.

Try using the go to a page view action for the link.
    Be well...

  • Reading Table of Contents

When I open my mail program, a dozen or more fairly recent emails also pop open and clog my desk top. Then, I get a spinning pinwheel and the message "Reading Table of Contents" at the top of my mail program. I have to force quit and sometimes this will go away if I restart, but not always. It's exceedingly annoying. Can anyone please give me advice on why these emails are opening and how to stop them from doing so, as well as how to get out of "reading table of contents" mode?
    Thanks,
    L
    g4 powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    You're welcome.
First of all, if launching Mail while holding the Shift key down didn't prevent Mail from opening all those messages, and if that's still a problem, you can fix it re-creating the preferences file as follows:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate the com.apple.mail.plist file and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
You'll have to set up your non-Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don't. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You'll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it's enabled.
Now, as to other things you should be aware of regarding the Table Of Contents problem, take a look at the following article in case it applies to you:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • Span columns problem with Table of Contents order

    Hello,
I'm having a strange issue with headings that span columns and Table of contents order. My document has a heading paragraph in a coloured box, which is then inserted in-line into a 2-column text box. The paragraph style for the box (set to in-line) is set to span all columns, so that the 2-columned text doesn't get messed up.
When I create a table of contents, the Heading style that is inside the coloured box is being picked up fine, but even though it is inserted before the headings below it, it is showing up after the level 2 headings, instead of before.
I have confirmed that the insertion of the blue bar is before the text below it, as when I remove the span columns option, the TOC works as it is supposed to. Is this a bug?

Hi there, thanks for the reply.
The only way I could move the inline box to the left was to make a custom anchor and change the X value, this did not affect the TOC unfortunately. I also checked the location of the invisible marker indicating the location of the inline text box, and it is definitely before the heading that follows. I confirmed this by removing the span columns option for that paragraph, and the TOC displayed properly after doing that, meaning there is likely some problem with the span columns option not properly recognizing the order of content.

  • Numbered captions incorrect in Table of Contents

    Hi,
I am working on a book project and have a page – let's call it the "image page" – with eight images with manually typed descriptions below each. These descriptions sit in Static Captions. The captions also have a sequential numbering (1, 2, 3, 4, ...), which is automatically generated by the caption paragraph style. So far everything works just fine.
Now I want to collect all of the captures in a Table of Contents, which works great to 99%. However, the ToC scrambles the capture sequence for a few of the 416 pages, such as my "image page". Not only are the captions listed in the wrong order – the numbers (that are correctly paired with the images on the "image page") are also mixed up so that they refer to another caption (from the same page). The ToC is set to exclude numbers, since there are already numbers in the captions.
The ToC should display the numbering on the "image page" with its corresponding description, and thus look like this ...
    284. AAA
    285. BBB
    286. CCC
    287. DDD
    288. EEE
    289. FFF
    290. GGG
    291. HHH
... but instead it looks like this:
    284. AAA
    285.CCC
    286. EEE
    287. GGG
    288. BBB
    289. DDD
    290. FFF
    291. HHH
... so if I wanted to look up caption CCC, I would find EEE instead. Problematic.
    In summary:
The captions on the "image page" are correctly numbered.
I have checked that the captions have the correct paragraph style so that the ToC can find them (which it does, but scrambled).
I have tried cutting and re-placing the images and captions in the order that I want them numbered.
I have updated the ToC several times.
Why does the ToC change the caption numbering, and how can I fix it? Grateful for any tips and advice!
    /H

Yes, that seems to be the problem. But nonetheless, I still want it to pick up text from left to right first. Is there any way to achieve this (or any other sorting sequence for that part)?
No panic though. I solved the problem in a not very elegant way, by simply pasting the scrambled ToC into Excel and sorting it ascending.
    Thanks!

  • Table Control BDC to CHANGE the contents problem

    Hi,
I am having a problem in BDC. The screen is having a table control and I want to change the contents depending on certain conditions.
This BDC is not to upload the data but to change already existing data.
How can I dynamically know the contents of the screen or contents or the row so that I can select the correct row to be changed?

    Hi,
    No its not like that.
    Suppose I want to update/change sheduling agreements <b>not upload</b>
I will be calling the transaction which will list the scheduling lines in a table control. The order of the lines in table control will be as per logic of SAP's Application program.
Now when I read the file and how will I dynamically know the exact line which should get selected.
Say my internal table is having the data to be changed but I can not determine the exact ordering of the records as per table control.
Hence I am facing the problem to know the exact ordering of table control
Let me give another example. Using ME12 transaction I am supposed to delete certain rows from info records say having condition '15EC'.
Now when I call a transction how will I know that for a particular vendor which line will contain this condition value so that can select the line and press delete

  • Table of Contents Order Question

I have a table of contents set up in my document with a Section Header and underneath that the page number followed by the page title.
    Example:
    ELEPHANT
    3  PEANUTS
The problem is that on right handed pages it puts the Section Header BELOW the page number and title. This only happens on right handed pages. I did notice that if the text box for the Section Header covers the whole page, then it lists it correctly, but then I have to add a tab and remove it after in the TOC. Any thoughts/ideas? Thanks!

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but it sounds like it could be. TOC is sensitive to frame placement. ID starts in the upper left corner and looks for frames going down the page (if I remember this correctly, it's pretty complex), then will read the content in that frame vertically in each column before moving to the next frame. Once all frames at a given x-coordinate are found, ID will look to the right and start again.
It's the x/y coordinate of the text inset of the upper left corner of the frame that governs the order, with the x-coordinate taking precedence (I think), and text alignment is not considered, so right-aligned text in the right column of a page can get picked up first if the frame is extended toward the left edge of the page far enough.

  • Problem with Sections and Table of Contents

I have just purchased pages. Both my iMac and MacBook have Lion. I do not have the "sections" button on the toolbar. When I open the "inspector" and try to insert a Table of Contents, the "paragraph styles" pane is empty. How can I correct these problems as I would like to use pages for a family story

You have started your document with a Page Layout template. TOC doesn't work with text boxes. You need to use a Word Processing document and have the text in the main text layer.
In the New from Template Chooser you can see the types in the left side bar.

  • Is there a way to create a table of contents listing the order of tabs(sheets) in a Numbers document?

I am planning my wedding and I have this huge Numbers document with 20+ tabs and I have plans to add many more tabs. Is there a way to create a table that has two columns: column 1= order that a tab appears, column 2=tab name? For example, my first three tabs are called Venues, Must Haves, and To Do List (in this order. I'd want this table of contents to be in the first sheet of the document, so it would be like sheet 1. Then I 'd want like the cells of column 1 to be like 2, 3, 4 (2nd, 3rd, 4th sheet in the document), and then the cells of column 2 to say Venues, Must Haves, and To Do List. I can make a tiny table of one cell in each sheet that I copied the name of the sheet and then do like a cell reference for column 2, but I'm having trouble w column 1.

There is no referential value for the order of the sheets, just the sheet name. Only two things I can think of to suggest:
Do the same thing for the first column that you do with the second (i.e. put a referential column in the same table as the Name and point to that).
Seriously consider using a word processor program. Numbers is probably the wrong tool.

  • Problem with automatic table of contents in latest Pages 5.1

So here's the deal. I'm using "Bottom text" to automaticly put page numbers on each new page, But I don't want page number on the cover (page 1) or on the introduction page (p2), so I write something else in the bottom text there, and them simply click "start new bottom text here" on page nr 3 (the page where I have the table of contents). This way I get page numbers on all future pages but no on the two previous ones, but the problem then is that the headlines from earlier (the introduction) is left out from automatic table of contents. I tried experimenting, and if i chose "start new bottom text" on page 4 (the one after table of contents) all headlines from there on out disappears from table of contents. How do I fix this? The thesis I'm writing is going to be very long, and I really don't wanna have to do table of contents manually. I also can't have page numbers on the introduction page as this is a major exam thesis and it needs to look very professional and excellent, because my whole grade is depending on it.

An interesting bug, if that is what it is.
It could be you have simply chosen a Section T.O.C. which only does a T.O.C. for the section it is in.
Try adding the initial unnumbered pages as manual text before the T.O.C. starts.

  • Table of Content Help - Anchored Objects/Listing Order

For the love of god this is extremely frustrating.   I have been searching for literally hours trying to find the solution.
I have a large document, linked frames from page 1 through page 44 for example.
On many pages I have figures, and using an incrementing paragraph style, these figure captions are numbered sequentially.
When generating a table of contents, any figures that are in the main linked frames are created in the proper order.
My issue is that on a few pages, I have figures inside anchored objects - basically an anchored text frame with a picture and the figure label text using my paragraph style.
These anchored objects are not being put in the table of contents in the proper order - they are being added to the end of the toc!  Indesign should be smart enough to add items on the page in the proper order - be it the main frame or an anchored one!
    For example
    Figure 1 - page 1
    Figure 2 - page 1
    Figure 3 - page 2
    Figure 5 - Page 3
    Figure 4 - Page 2 <<< huh?
Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

After looking at this a bit more, this may or may not work so we might need to get dirty on this one .....................
Some clues can be found here : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-publisher/bip-bookbinding-176639.pdf
Looking at Page 7, it should be obvious that we can add additional deatils to the reports, including cover pages.
Though, after looking at Page 8, I think I may have you slightly in the wrong direction. toc-template appears to simply cover the commands for the table of contents and there is another template to control everything. But is that file visible to edit?
If you run FRConfig.cmd, you can find more clues.
Go to the MBeans tab, expand com.hyperion, then expand Financial Reporting, and Attributes.
The two attributes that immeidately jump out are TextPrintTemplate and BookTOCPrintTemplate
    - TextPrintTemplate is the FR_TextTemplate.doc file in <<EPM_ORACLE_INSTANCE>>/products/FinancialReporting/bin/ folder
    - BookTOCPrintTemplate is the toc-template.rtf file previously discussed.
Once again, though, the other template exposed to us is most likely just driving the content and is not at a high enough definition level for this to work how you want it to.
I would say to use the example in the PDF and try adding that to the table of contents page before it does all of the loops. Perhaps it will work from there, perhaps not.
If that doesn't work, Thursday we can attempt to drill into this more.
    :)
