Tables controls feel unintuitive

As it stands, the table control feels very unintitive to me. People are used to the look/feel of Excel - selecting entire columns or rows, deleting multiple rows at once, deleting sections of data, row/column numbers, etc. LV tables seem to have none of this "default" functionality.
Why does this matter?  I have found that sometimes you just get bad data... someone trips over a wire, your thermocouple bugs for a second, you start the test too soon, etc. I have had several applications that the most conveniant way I can think of to manually edit data is an Excel type table.
In the past, I have added in extra buttons to the side of the table in order to replicate SOME of this functionality (delete selection, delete selected columns, delete selected rows) but have found that the application users end up confused by it. They want to select something, right click, and hit "delete row". It isn't intuitive!
Does anyone have a better way to provide manual data editing?  (Or perhaps a way to programatically make table controls more intuitive).

Hello M,
I think you might be looking for custom right-click menus, as described in this tutorial:
Tutorial: Create Custom Run-Time Shortcut Menus for LabVIEW Front Panel Objects

I agree that having more of this sort of thing available out-of-the-box would be beneficial, definitely a good one for the Idea Exchange!

  • Changing data in the table control during run time of transaction F-28

    Dear Experts,
in transaction F-28 of second screen of second column (Field Name: Assignment) currently the data is getting from BSEG table and populating this column of table control, now I have a requirement that the data should be get from the other ZTABLE and populate this column during run time instead of the data from BSEG table, please let me know your suggestions, if you guys feel it will be done using User Exit then please let me know the suitable exit for this.

  • How to provide F4 help for a field in table control

    Hi Friends,
    I have requirement like below.
1.Create one custom transaction code with header and item information.
2.In item level, we will be designed table control to enter/display the data.
3.Table control’s first field will be material number and next DOT number (Material may have many DOT numbers) and so on.
4.First user will enter material number in the table control’s first row’s first field and go to DOT number field.
5.DOT number has drop down option. If user selects drop down box of DOT number, he gets all the DOT numbers available in database. User selects one DOT number and double clicks on it then it will be populated in DOT number field box.
But for point number 5,  business wants like when ever user enters material number in table control first field then select DOT number’s drop down then they want to see the particular material’s DOT numbers only in the drop down list for selection. Not all DOT numbers available in data base. Same thing should happen for all item lines in table control.
    Please see below example.
Assume data base table has 10 DOT numbers. But material number has only 2 DOT numbers. When ever user enters material number in item level table control and selects DOT number’s drop down then it should show only 2 DOT numbers which are related to particular material number. Not all 10 DOT numbers.
Could you please suggest me, how can we achieve this?

    Hello,
    Check this :-
    For POV
    Input Help in Dialog Modules
You can call dialog modules in the POV event using the event keyword PROCESS ON VALUE-REQUEST.
    PROCESS ON VALUE-REQUEST.
    FIELD <f> MODULE <mod>.
After the PROCESS ON VALUE-REQUEST statement, you can only use the MODULE statement together with the FIELD statement. When the user chooses F4 for a field <f>, the system calls the module <mod> belonging to the FIELD <f> statement. If there is more than one FIELD statement for the same field <f>, only the first is executed. The module <mod> is defined in the ABAP program like a normal PAI module. However, the contents of the screen field <f> are not available, since it is not transported by the FIELD statement during the PROCESS ON HELP-REQUEST event. You can now program your own value lists in the module. However, this procedure is only recommended if it really is not possible to use a search help. Defining search helps is much easier than PROCESS ON VALUE-REQUEST, since the system takes over some of the standard operations, such as getting field contents from the screen. It also ensures that the F4 help has a uniform look and feel throughout the system. Furthermore, it means that you do not have to reassign input help to fields on each screen.
Despite the introduction of search helps (and search help exits), there are still cases in which you need to use parts of the standard F4 functions directly. In this case, there are some standard function modules that you can use in the POV event. They support search helps, as well as all other kinds of input help, and are responsible for data transport between the screen and the input help. These all have the prefix F4IF_. The most important are:
    F4IF_FIELD_VALUE_REQUEST
Calls the input help of the ABAP Dictionary dynamically. You can pass the component names of a structure or database table of the ABAP Dictionary to the function module in the import parameters TABNAME and FIELDNAME. The function module starts the ABAP Dictionary input help for this component. All of the relevant screen fields are read. If you specify the import parameters DYNPPROG, DYNPNR, and DYNPROFIELD, the user’s selection is returned to the corresponding field on the screen. If you specify the table parameter RETURN_TAB, the selection is returned into the table instead.
    F4IF_INT_TABLE_VALUE_REQUEST
This function module displays a value list that you created in an ABAP program. The value list is passed to the function module as the table parameter VALUE_TAB. If you specify the import parameters DYNPPROG, DYNPNR, and DYNPROFIELD, the user’s selection is returned to the corresponding field on the screen. If you specify the table parameter RETURN_TAB, the selection is returned into the table instead.
There are also two function modules - DYNP_VALUES_READ and DYNP_VALUES_UPDATE - that can read the values of screen fields and return values to them during the POV event. For further information, refer to the relevant function module documentation.

The screen flow logic is as follows:
    PROCESS BEFORE OUTPUT.
    MODULE INIT.
    PROCESS AFTER INPUT.
    MODULE CANCEL AT EXIT-COMMAND.
    PROCESS ON VALUE-REQUEST.
    FIELD CARRIER MODULE VALUE_CARRIER.
    FIELD CONNECTION MODULE VALUE_CONNECTION.
When the user chooses input help for the individual fields, the following is displayed:
For the Airline field, the POV module VALUE_CARRIER is called. The function module F4IF_FIELD_VALUE_REQUEST displays the input help for the component CARRIER1 of the structure DEMOF4HELP from the ABAP Dictionary, namely the search help DEMOF4DE. The user’s selection is returned to the screen field CARRIER.
For the Flight number field, the POV module VALUE_CONNECTION is called. The function module DYNP_VALUE_READ transports the value of the screen field CARRIER into the program. The program then reads the corresponding values from the database table SPFLI into the internal table VALUES_TAB using a SELECT statement, and passes the internal table to F4IF_INT_TABLE_VALUE_REQUEST. This displays the internal table as input help, and places the user’s selection into the screen field CONNECTION.
    For POH------------
    Field Help
There are three ways of displaying field help for screen elements:
    Data Element Documentation
If you place a field on the screen in the Screen Painter by copying a ABAP Dictionary field, the corresponding data element documentation from the ABAP Dictionary is automatically displayed when the user chooses field help (as long as the help has not been overridden in the screen flow logic).
For further information about creating data element documentation, refer to data elements.
    Data Element Supplement Documentation
If the data element documentation is insufficient, you can expand it by writing a data element supplement
Data element supplement documentation contains the heading Definition, as well as the following others:
    Use
    Procedure
    Examples
    Dependencies
To create data element supplement documentation for a screen, choose Goto ® Documentation ® DE supplement doc. from the element list of the screen. A dialog box appears in which the system proposes a number as the identified for the data element supplement. You can then enter help texts for the above headings using the SAPscript editor.
Data element supplement documentation created in this way is program- and screen-specific. Any data element supplement documentation created in the ABAP Dictionary with the same number is overridden by the screen-specific documentation. You can link existing data element supplement documentation created in the ABAP Dictionary with a screen field by using the table THLPF. To do this, crate a new row in THLPF containing the following data: Program name, screen name, field name, and number of the data element supplement documentation.
To display data element supplement documentation, you must code the following screen flow logic in the POH event:
    PROCESS ON HELP-REQUEST.
    FIELD <f> [MODULE <mod>] WITH <num>.
After PROCESS ON HELP-REQUEST, you can only use FIELD statements. If there is no PROCESS ON HELP-REQUEST keyword in the flow logic of the screen, the data element documentation for the current field, or no help at all is displayed when the user chooses F1. Otherwise, the next FIELD statement containing the current field <f> is executed.
If there is screen-specific data element supplement documentation for the field <f>, you can display it by specifying its number <num>. The number <num> can be a literal or a variable. The variable must be declared and filled in the corresponding ABAP program.
You can fill the variables, for example, by calling the module <mod> before the help is displayed. However, the FIELD statement does not transport the contents of the screen field <f> to the ABAP program in the PROCESS ON HELP-REQUEST event.
For further information about data element supplement documentation, refer to Data Element Supplements.
Calling Help Texts from Dialog Modules
If data element supplement documentation is insufficient for your requirements, or you want to display help for program fields that you have not copied from the ABAP Dictionary, you can call dialog modules in the POH event:
    PROCESS ON HELP-REQUEST.
    FIELD <f> MODULE <mod>.
After the PROCESS ON HELP-REQUEST statement, you can only use the MODULE statement together with the FIELD statement. When the user chooses F1 for a field <f>, the system calls the module <mod> belonging to the FIELD <f> statement. If there is more than one FIELD statement for the same field <f>, only the first is executed. However, the contents of the screen field <f> are not available in the module <mod>, since it is not transported by the FIELD statement during the PROCESS ON HELP-REQUEST event. The field help should not be dependent on the user input.
The module <mod> is defined in the ABAP program like a normal PAI module. The processing logic of the module must ensure that adequate help is displayed for the field in question. Instead of calling an extra screen with text fields, you should use one of the following function modules to display a suitable SAPscript document:
    HELP_OBJECT_SHOW_FOR_FIELD
This function module displays the data element documentation for components of any structure or database table from the ABAP Dictionary. You pass the name of the component and structure or table to the import parameters FIELD and TABLE.
    HELP_OBJECT_SHOW
Use this function module to display any SAPscript document. You must pass the document class (for example, TX for general texts, DE for data element documentation) and the name of the document to the import parameters DOKCLASS and DOKNAME. For technical reasons, you must also pass an empty internal table with the line type TLINE to the tables parameter of the function module.
For further information about how to create SAPscript documents, refer to the Documentation of System Objects documentation.

When the user chooses F1 on the input field for DEMOF1HELP-FIELD1, the data element documentation for DEMOF1TYPE is displayed, since the field does not occur in the PROCESS ON HELP-REQUEST event.
If the user chooses F1 repeatedly for the input field DEMOF1HELP-FIELD2, the data element documentation is displayed, along with the supplement documentation for either 0100 or 0200 alternately. The variable VAR is filled in the dialog module F1_HELP_FIELD2.
When the user chooses F1 on the input field for FIELD3, the data element documentation for DEMOF1TYPE is displayed, since this is called in the dialog module F1_HELP_FIELD3 by the function module HELP_OBJECT_SHOW_FOR_FIELD.
When the user chooses F1 on the input field for FIELD4, the SAPscript documentation DEMO_FOR_F1_HELP is displayed, since this is called in the dialog module F1_HELP_FIELD4 by the function module HELP_OBJECT.

  • Drop Down in table control

    Hi All,
I am facing Problems here ;-
I have developed a table control in WDA4 application i have 3 dropdowns which are dependent on each other i.e. when i select the entry in the first one then corresponding to that entry the data should be shown in next drop down and same goes for the third one .I am using dropdown by index here .
    Thnks ,
    Sahil

    Hello Sahiil,
You need to bind the table to a context node and the three drop downs separately to three context nodes. when you click one one of the drop downs, populate the the other nodes.
I hope this works for you.
Please feel free to ask if you have any further doubts.

  • Editable ALVs vs Table Controls

    Hi...
Can somebody give me the advantages and disadvantages of using editable ALV's  (ALV grid) over table controls? I've got a requirement from my client side wherein I have to replace all table controls with editable ALV's and prior to that, I've to submit an understanding document highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of doing the same.  Also, I've heard that SAP is thinking of replacing all existing table controls in its standard screens with editable ALVs. Can somebody send me a link or some article to substantiate this?
<removed>. Please do help me out asap if you feel like it.
    Thanks and Regards,

    > And also, if its true that SAP is thinking on replacing table controls with editable ALV's
SAP usually don't spend time to rewrite existing programs. Many efforts and risks of regression for a so little gain. Really, that would surprise me
That would be rather easy to show ALV advantages, as you can do almost "nothing" with table controls. So I would begin with the only table control functions:
    - change order of columns
    - hide columns
    - change column size
    - save the layout above, for the user and for everyone
    - number of fixed columns
    - good performance in the WAN as only screen lines are loaded
ALV can do all of them. The other ALV functions are : see [SAP library - SAP List Viewer for SAP GUI|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/8d/e994374c9cd355e10000009b38f8cf/frameset.htm]).
Another difference is that checks are done immediately for current page of table control (when you press enter or scroll, the PAI is triggered), while they are done for the whole lines with ALV (in fact you could do it, but I guess you don't want to spend much time to develop)

  • Regarding Design of the Table Control

    Hi Experts,
I am using Link to Action in one of the Column in the Table Control, Now i am using Designing type as Alternating,
The Column which is using the Link to Action appearing the White Background, and the rest of the Coloumns are appearing as Blue background, I need a uniformity for the Look and Feel, How can i achieve this ?
If i am using the Table control with Alternative Design without the Link to Action as the Column it is appearing the with Alternative Colors. But this Violates my functionality.
How can i achieve this Alternating Colors when we are using Link to Action .????

    Hi Vikranth,
To differentiate the type of cell Varients, SAP has marked them with different colors. Unfortunately, we cannot work around this.

  • Table control use...?

    Hi gurus,
I was reading the previous posts on table control but still not able to understand when do we use it..I mean in what situations do we use table control...I can always use ALV to display data as in dialog programming we can have ABAP code...? Am i right in saying that or making a error...
Kindly help me understand this concept..
    Cheers:Jim

    hi Jim,
Main use of Table control is to do the DML/DRL operations on multiple records....
    Features of Table Controls
Data is displayed in the form of table.
Table control gives user the feeling of an actual table.
You can scroll through the table vertically as well as horizontally.
You can select rows and columns.
You can resize the with of columns.
You can have separator lines between rows and columns.
Automatic resizing of the table when the user resizes the window.
You can update information in the table control and it can be updated in the database table by writing code for it.
I think this info might be helpful for you

  • Reg:How to delete the column in table control also from database table.

    Hi Experts,
Once again thank u all for giving the responses.
one more doubt is how to delete the columns of table control and also the record shold delete from ztable.
    With Regards,
    Saroja.P.

    Hi,
If you want to delete the rows in the table control and simultaneously delete it from the database table, then you can implement a 'DELETE' functionality specific to your table control. Have a MARK field (you will find that in the screen attributes of the table control -> give a name for the MARK field, you will find an additional MARK column at the beginning of your table control). You can check whatever rows you want to delete from the table control, call the delete module.
"This portion of code inside the LOOP...ENDLOOP.
    IF sy-ucomm eq 'F_DELETE'.
gt_itab2-check = mark.  " Store the MARK field status into your internal table's correspoding field 'check'
      MODIFY gt_itab INDEX tabcontrol-current_line.
    ENDIF.
    iF sy-ucomm eq 'DELETE1'.
DELETE gt_itab WHERE check eq 'X'. "Your internal table does not have rows that you want to delete
    ENDIF.
Now you can modify your database table using the MODIFY statement.
    MODIFY ZDB FROM TABLE gt_itab.

  • How to delete the row in table control with respect to one field in module pool programming?

    Hi,
Can I know the way to delete the row in table control with respect to one field in module pool programming
    Regards
    Darshan MS

    HI,
I want to delete the row after the display of table control. I have created push button as delete row. If I click on this push button, the selected row should get deleted.
    I have written this code,
    module USER_COMMAND_9000 input.
    DATA OK_CODE TYPE SY-UCOMM.
    OK_CODE = SY-UCOMM.
    CASE OK_CODE.
         WHEN 'DELETE'.
            LOOP AT lt_source INTO ls_source WHERE mark = 'X'.
                APPEND LS_SOURCE TO LT_RESTORE.
                DELETE TABLE LT_SOURCE FROM LS_SOURCE.
                SOURCE-LINES = SOURCE-LINES - 1.
            ENDLOOP.
But I'm unable to delete the selected rows, It is getting deleted the last rows eventhough I select the other row.
So I thought of doing with respect to the field.

when i put matnr no. at screen 103
so how i will get all  data of dat number to table control screen.

    Hi Darshan,
Here is a detailed description of how to update data in table controll.
      Updating data in table control
The ABAP language provides two mechanisms for loading the table control with data from the internal table and then storing the altered rows of the table control back to the internal table.
Method 1: Read the internal table into the Table Control in the screenu2019s flow logic.  Used when the names of the Table Control fields are based on fields of the internal table.
Method 2: Read the internal table into the Table Control in the module pool code. Used when the names of the Table Control fields are based on fields of the database table.
Method 1 (table control fields = itab fields)
In the flow logic we can read an internal table using the LOOP statement. Define the reference to the relevant able control by specifying WITH CONTROL <ctrl>
Determine which table entry is to be read by specifying CURSOR <ctrl>-CURRENT_LINE.
After the read operation the field contents are placed in the header line of the internal table. If the fields in the table control have the same name as the internal they will be filled automatically. Otherwise we need to write a module to transfer the internal table fields to the screen fields.
We must reflect any changes the user makes to the fields of the table control in the internal table otherwise they will not appear when the screen is redisplayed after PBO processing, (eg, after the user presses Enter or scrolls) However, this processing should be performed only if changes have actually been made to the screen fields of the table control (hence the use of the ON REQUEST)
    PROCESS BEFORE OUTPUT.
LOOP AT ITAB_REG WITH CONTROL TCREG
    CURSOR TCREG-CURRENT_LINE.
    ENDLOOP.
    PROCESS AFTER INPUT.
    LOOP AT ITAB_REG.
    MODULE MODIFY_ITAB_REG.
    ENDLOOP.
    MODULE MODIFY_ITAB_REG INPUT.
    MODIFY ITAB_REG INDEX TCREG-CURRENT_LINE.
    ENDMODULE.
Method 2 (table control fields = dict. fields)
If using a LOOP statement without an internal table in the flow logic, we must read the data in a PBO module which is called each time the loop is processed.
Since, in this case, the system cannot determine the number of internal table entries itself, we must use the EXIT FROM STEP-LOOP statement to ensure that no blank lines are displayed in the table control if there are no more corresponding entries in the internal table.
    PROCESS BEFORE OUTPUT.
    LOOP WITH CONTROL TCREG.
    MODULE READ_ITAB_REG.
    ENDLOOP.
    PROCESS AFTER INPUT.
    LOOP WITH CONTROL TCREG.
    CHAIN.
    FIELD: ITAB_REG-REG,
    ITAB_REG-DESC.
    MODULE MODIFY_ITAB_REG
    ON CHAIN-REQUEST.
    ENDCHAIN.
    ENDLOOP.
    MODULE READ_ITAB_REG OUTPUT.
    READ TABLE ITAB_REG INDEX TCREG-CURRENT_LINE.
    IF SY-SUBRC EQ 0.
    MOVE-CORRESPONDING ITAB_REREG TO TCREG.
    ELSE.
    EXIT FROM STEP-LOOP.
    ENDIF.
    ENDMODULE.
    MODULE MODIFY_ITAB_REG INPUT.
    MOVE-CORRESPONDING TCREG TO ITAB_REG.
    MODIFY ITAB_REG INDEX
    TCREG-CURRENT_LINE.
    ENDMODULE.
    Updating the internal table
    Method 1
    PROCESS AFTER INPUT.
    LOOP AT ITAB_REG.
    CHAIN.
    FIELD: ITAB_REG-REG,
    ITAB_REG-DESC.
    MODULE MODIFY_ITAB_REG ON CHAIN-REQUEST.
    ENDCHAIN.
    ENDLOOP.
    MODULE MODIFY_ITAB_REG INPUT.
    ITAB_REG-MARK = u2018Xu2019.
    MODIFY ITAB_REG INDEX TCREG-CURRENT_LINE.
    ENDMODULE.
    Method 2
    PROCESS AFTER INPUT.
    LOOP WITH CONTROL TCREG.
    CHAIN.
    FIELD: TCREG-REG,
    TCREG-DESC.
    MODULE MODIFY_ITAB_REG ON CHAIN-REQUEST.
    ENDCHAIN.
    ENDLOOP.
    MODULE MODIFY_ITAB_REG INPUT.
    MOVE-CORRESPONDING TCREG TO ITAB_REG.
    ITAB_REG-MARK = u2018Xu2019.
    MODIFY ITAB_REG INDEX TCREG-CURRENT_LINE.
    ENDMODULE.
    Updating the database
    MODULE USER_COMMAND_100.
    CASE OK_CODE.
    WHEN u2018SAVEu2019.
    LOOP AT ITAB-REG.
    CHECK ITAB_REG-MARK = u2018Xu2019.
    MOVE-CORRESPONDING ITAB_REG TO TCREG.
    UPDATE TCREG.
    ENDLOOP.
    WHEN u2026
    u2026
    ENDCASE.
    ENDMODULE.
Hope this will solve your problem.
    Regards,
    Pavan.

  • Update internal table data from table control

    Hi GURUS,
I need help regarding one of my requirement.
I need to display data from the internal table on the screen and when the user selects a record/multiple records from screen and clicks on approve button i need to update one of the field from N to Y in the corresponding Ztable. Once the record is updated from Ztable , that should no longer be visible for the user on the screen.
I am using table control wizard to display data. I am able to update the Ztable, but that record is not refreshing from the user screen. Any suggestions would be approved.
Also please let me know if table control is the best way to do this/ alv grid control??

    hi
REFRESH CONTROL Control-Name FROM SCREEN '0100'  -> use this command to refresh the table control

  • Validação de campos em um Table Control

    Boa tarde.
