Taking rollback segment and datafile offline caused application error

One of the DBA's added a large rollback segment which caused the rman backup to abort. The rollback segment was taking offline and it's datafile was taken offline, all went normally no errors. An Application started gettting errors the database and application were taking down and up, no errors on either but the problem was still there. The rbs datafile and RBS were placed back online and the application worked properly. It looks as if Oracle let us take the RBS and datafile offline with active segments in the RBS is this possible?? If so it means you can pull the rug out from under Oracle and it doesn't even complain

Pls check any transactions written in application level,
explicitly assigned to the RBs which was taken offline.

    hi,
we are frequently getting an error on tablespaces, rollback segments and undo tabelspaces during the ETL load. This was really distrubing us to go further, is there any best practice how to avoid the tablespace errors or any precautions to be taken, we are very new to this ETL loads, pls advice

    Hello Kishan
Yes. Make tablespaces bigger. However, the proper way to do it is optimizing your queries. If you don't have experience with Oracle DB, consult your DBA.
    Hope this helps

  • Difference Between Rollback Segments and UNDO Tablespace

    Hi guys,
Can you tell difference between Rollabck segments and UNDO Tablespaces.
I think that rollback Segemnts and UNDO tablespaces are similar both are used for storing before imags of data, which is going to be modified.
but my question still both the rollback abck segments and UNDO tablespaces exists.
why and what is the reason of both existing and at what time, we can use..them at which scenarios's
    Regards,
    Pavan Kumar N

Undo segments in undo tablespaces, introduced in 9i, are the successor of rollback segments.
They are automatically managed by Oracle.
Rollback segments exist for reasons of backwards compatibility.
That said, you should switch to undo segments and stop using rollback segments.
Other than that: could you please avoid rehearsing the complete documentation in this forum?

  • Rollback segment and remote select

It seems that a transaction doing a remote select (I mean a select from one machine to another one via sqlnet) generates some entries in the rollback segment of the remote machine.
Do you know why ? Normally, only transactions modifying data generates info in a rollback.

  • DESADV01 E1EDP07 segment per line item causes EDIFACT error

When a Sales Order has the PO Number + Date populated, the subsequent outbound Delivery IDoc (DESADV01) contains a parent E1EDP07 segment for every child line item segment (E1EDP09).  For a SO without PO Date, the IDoc is created with a single E1EDP07 with multiple child E1EDP09 segments.  This is standard SAP - do you need to code around this?
The first scenario causes an error in EDIFACT mapping, as a limit of 9 RFF segments is allowed (E1EDP07 is a level 1 segment).  Partner systems reject this.

    Hi,
Segment field should be optional, so check the posting keys in OB41, check the GL account which hit this posting and check the FIeld status in OBC4 and make the segment field as optional.
while posting the transactions you can check in more then Profit center and segment details will be updated in the postings.
try out, this might help. check the new ledger document types also.

    Hi,
I want clarification regarding Segments, Datafiles and extents.
As we know that A segment is made of one or more extents and extents are composed of one or more datablocks in the HD.
Since all data are store in Datafiles which are composed of extents and datablocks. I want to know weather a table(Segment) can span to multiple datafiles or in a sigle datafile.

    Kathleen,
Sorry, the character set scanner only supports 8.0.6 and above. Can you first migrate your US7ACII database to 9.2, and run the scanner before changing database character set to WE8ISO8859P15? Also you can read this paper http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/globalization/pdf/mwp.pdf
to understand why you may have invalid data in your US7ASCII database and the best way to migrate it. I am also wondering about your choice of P15 versus P1 and WIN1252? If you need further information you can contact me directly at [email protected]

  • Rollback segment  problem during import

    Hello experts,
    please help.
I have the following error when importing table data to my
    Oracle 8.1.7 database.
    IMP-00058: ORACLE error 1562 encountered

alter the tablespace which contains rollback segments, and
either change the existing datafile (datafile 3) to autoextend
on or resize, or add new datafile in another disk drive which
has more space (it is better to set autoextend on or give it a
    larger space).

  • No Online backups due to datafiles offline than I canu0092t recover. How...?

    Hi gurus!!!
I got into a problem with some datafiles.
We have MySAP in a BD oracle 9.2.0.6
I used Oracle Entreprise Manager Console to generate two datafiles in the tablespace PSAPPRDUSR,
but I generated them in another tablesapce (PSAPPRD) with a name of file,

<b>So... I put them offline later to erase them later!!!</b>
    <b>The datafiles contains no data.</b>

    HEEEELP!!!!
What I can do to recover the datafiles and to continue with my daily Online backups?
The BD is in production and I do not have long time to fix it, only a few hours on Saturdays night.

    Hi,
    alter database datafile offline drop;
This command is not meant to drop a datafile. It is meant to offline the datafile with the intention of dropping the tablespace.
For a tablespace comprising multiple datafiles you can only drop a datafile by dropping the entire tablespace, this will work even you have one datafile.
If you have 10gr2, it's finally possible to drop a datafile as long as
it's not the only datafile within the tablespace, and
the tablespace is only and in read-write status.
So since you are on 9i your situation in summary:
If you have more than one datafile in the tablespace and you wish to keep the objects that reside in the other datafile(s) which are part of this tablespace, then you must export all the objects inside the tablespace.
    1. Gather information on the current datafiles within the tablespace by running some query to remember the t/s, segment, and datafile info.
    2. Export all the objects that you wish to keep.
    3. Once the export is done, issue the DROP TABLESPACE <tablespace name> INCLUDING CONTENTS.
    4. Delete the datafiles belonging to this tablespace using the operating system.
    5. Recreate the tablespace with the datafile(s) desired, then import the objects into that tablespace.
Hope this helps and good luck,
    George

  • Error rollback segment - urgent

    hi
i have created locally managed tablesspace and in init.ora file i have sent unto management as manual as our application needs to specify rollback segments
when i created rollback segments and attached to a locally managed tablespace i am getting ora-01552 error
i have also speecified names of rollback segment in init.ora file
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01552: cannot use system rollback segment for non-system tablespace 'ROLLTBLS'
can i not specify a rollback segment to locally managed tablespace
    regards
    Kedar

the database is in open mode and the undo_management is set to manual. after i created the locally managed tablespace i ran the script for rollback segment refering to one of the above locally managed tablespace
what other checks do i have to make for creating rollback segment.

  • Rollback Segment

I have a UNIX script through which i call a procedure. In that procedure i have two statements
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER ROLLBACK SEGMENT R01 SHRINK';
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'SET TRANSACTION USE ROLLBACK SEGMENT R01';
The procedure gives me the error insufficent insufficent privileges. But when i execute these statements in SQL*Plus (with same username password) they are running fine.
    Any Help ??

Which is the exact Oracle message error do you have ?
What is your Oracle version ?
    if you get
"ORA-01650 unable to extend rollback segment ... by ... in tablespace ...", you could extend one of your rollback segment tablespace datafile with:
ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE .... RESIZE ... or add a new datafile to the tablespace:
ORA-01650 unable to extend rollback segment string by string in tablespace string
Cause: Failed to allocate an extent for rollback segment in tablespace.
Action: Use ALTER TABLESPACE ADD DATAFILE statement to add one or more files to the tablespace indicated.

  • How to solve about rollback segment fail to extend?

I've a transaction about 50,000 records, then process fail in script. the error code is ORA-01562 FAIL TO EXTEND ROLLBACK SEGMENT = num. I'm use oracle database 7.3.4., form 4.5

It would be better to have several small transactions instead of one huge transaction of 50000 records, like you say. You may use an additional log table to keep the log of how far you've got in processing those 50000 records, and pick up from where you've left in case something goes wrong.
Anyway, one thing that may help would be to use:
    alter tablespace your_rbs_tablespace
    add datafile ...;
to have more space for your rollback segment(s).
Eventually, you may have a large rollback segment and set transaction use huge_rbs, in order to have your huge transaction use that huge rollback segment.

  • Creating rollback segments using PUBLIC

One of our dba's dropped and recreated the 6 rollback segments ( 8i ) but didnt use the PUBLIC option. When the server was rebooted they came up as offline. Another dba did the same but used the PUBLIC option and they are now fine.
I have looked through the ORacle docs on creating rollback segments and it doesnt seem to say that using the PUBLIC option is essential . I seems to think that u need to do this if using parallel server option.
So what is the real truth ?
    George

Private rollback segments need to be defined in init.ora.
