Tally problem: Hard drive space doesn't add up.

I'm trying to work out how my laptop computes it's 80Gb hard drive space so that i can work out what to get rid of.
If I work down the icons in the left of my finder and 'get info'
it reads:
desktop 3.7 GB
applications 6.6GB
home 43.88 GB (made up of all the others plus 9.81 GB library space plus some Kb's for folders)
documents 5.36 GB
movies 9.02GB
music 14.64GB
pictures1.29 Gb
There is 2.47 GB available
Now no matter what i do, my figures tally everything up to around 53GB. and not the 74.4GB it says i have used.
Any suggestions of where i'm going wrong?

Hi, dabbla, and welcome to Apple Discussions. If your Powerbook thinks there is only 2.47GB of free space available on your 80GB hard drive — whether or not it's right — you need to start removing things immediately, while you still can. Don't try to problem-solve or achieve any deeper understanding first: you are in a near-emergency situation that could become a dire data-loss disaster at any moment.
If you can't make any more rational decisions about what to trash first, start with whatever is already backed up elsewhere. First to go should be anything of which you have two or more backups, then things that you've backed up once and tested the backups to be sure they're good. If that doesn't free up at least 7.5 more GB of free space, trash any very large applications or application-related sample, tutorial, or template folders that you can reinstall from original installer discs after the crisis is past. You want to be looking for files and folders that are 100MB or more in size; discarding little 3MB and 10MB files or folders will never get you where to need to go.
You must maintain at least 8GB, and preferably about 12GB, of free space on an 80GB drive at all times for trouble-free operation. With as little free space as you have now, your OS is desperately short of space for its swapfiles, your Powerbook is being slowed down significantly, and you are at serious risk of crashes and data loss as your OS, applications and documents compete for the available disk space. You may be completely unable to burn DVDs or even CDs.
It's possible that you have some directory damage that is causing your Powerbook to misreport the amount of free space that is available, but you may not be able to repair the damage until you've freed up some more, because what the OS believes may matter more right now than what is actually true. As soon as you've freed up several more GB of space on your drive, boot to your Panther installer Disk 1, open Disk Utility from the Installer menu, and run the Repair Disk routine, repeatedly if necessary, until it gives you two successive "Appears OK" verdicts. You may then find that more free space is available than was reported before. If so, good.
After that, download Onyx or MacJanitor and use it to run the Daily, Weekly and Monthly Background Maintenance (cron) tasks. That should free up a bit more space and put your house in good order. You can then proceed to back up all your unbacked-up documents, if any, to other media — a FireWire hard drive is far and away the best choice. Documents that are dormant or retired and don't need to be kept ready at hand on the Powerbook can also be backed up to CDs or DVDs (so you have redundant backups of them) before you delete them from the PB's hard drive.

    Im having a problem with my HD on my MacBook Air 2011 with 128Gb SSD and Lion.
    Since about a month after I purchased my computer, I started to notice low HD space. I started managing it but couldnt keep it with more than 15 Gb of space. I transfered my biggest file, a Parallels Desktop virtual machine to an external HD. I have disabled Time Machine and have removed most of my files from the computer. My User folder barely uses 27 Gb of HD Space. The Get Info shows that I have used 90.84 Gb and have 29.63 Gb Free. But when I try to add all of the folders from the HD (Applications, Library, Syste, Users) it comes with a 42.42 Gb used number.
    I tried lots of programs like Disk Inventory X, WhatSize, OmniDisk Sweeper, etc, and all come up with an aprox. 43.38 used Gb number, so there is no discrepancy between these programs and what Finder is telling me. Here is a screenshot I took with WhatSize.
    Where is the rest of the space going? Im lost on what to do to empty space. Hope so

    Nevermind, I found the solution: I needed to repair the disk. Just ran the disk repair and poof! space was back.

    You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
    Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
    Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
    Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down.

    When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
    These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
              DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
    (not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
    If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

  • Can I connect an external hard drive to my time capsule to add virtual hard drive space?

    I would like to make a 4 TB external hard drive available wirelessly on my home network.  I have heard that I could connect it to my router or my Time Capsule to do this.  Is this possible?  Is there any special setup I need to do to enable this to work? 
    Additionally, I have two Macbooks in the house and have recently purchased a second Time Capsule.  I would like to back up each computer to its own Time Capsule.  Is there a configuration that would make this possible?
    If the two Time Capsules are connected together via an ethernet cable (in extend the network mode), and one elects to back both of their computers up to the primary Time Capsule, does the primary use the secondary Time Capsule's hard drive space to continue backing up once it becomes full?

  • Hard Drive space issue

    I was wondering if anybody has been experiencing hard drive space disappearing slowly? After a month I am down to 35 gigs when I haven't installed anything. I have deleted my cache every time I get off the internet and it still has the problem. The issue is occuring on a MacBook Pro.

    There are a number of possible explanations. While you may haven't installed software you've been using your computer and creating files which takes up space. If you have an iOS device perhaps you've been taking pictures and are using PhotoStream - so your pictures are now on your computer. You are using email and it is being indexed even if you aren't copying messages to the computer plus attachments are being copied to the computer. Also your operating system and programs create cache files - temporary files - which don't always get deleted (more on this later) and create log files. All this takes up space. Oh, and when you trash something don't forget to empty the trash. (Look under File in the Finder menu - the trash doesn't get automatically deleted.)
    The cache files I mentioned above should get trimmed and deleted but they don't always. Sometimes a cache just keeps growing and growing until it takes over the computer. It isn't common but it does happen. Every once in a while I'll restart in Safe Mode - that done by restarting the computer and holding the shift key until the Apple icon appears. This performs a disk directory check (which is a good thing to do once a month or so or any time you force quit the computer) and it also deletes and trims cache files. Once you've gotten to the Finder restart as normal.
    If you are using TimeMachine to back up your computer, by default you also have mobile backups running. When your computer isn't connected to its TimeMachine drive the hourly backups are made to the local hard drive instead. Mobile backups are intelligent - when the space on your drive dips down to 20GB older mobile backups are deleted to keep that 20GB free space the OS needs. Eventually if the drive continues to fill up with your stuff and there's no room for mobile backups they are deleted entirely and no more made until/unless you delete some of your stuff.

  • Missing Hard Drive Space + Other Issues

    My Macbook's been acting funny lately - it wouldn't always come out of sleep, and every now and then an application would crash but its icon would stay in the Dock and there would be no way to get rid of it. When I tried typing in my password on the login screen (when it was coming out of sleep) the field would keep losing focus and delete everything in it. I have the 120GB hard drive (It says 111, but I assume that's the 1024 vs 1000 thing), and about a year and a half ago it failed, but I brought it to the Apple Store and they gave me a new one, which has been working fine.
    The macbook had been doing some weird stuff, so I've been using the computer I'm typing on for the last few weeks, but two days ago I decided to reset the PRAM and SMC and try using the macbook again. It was working fine, but then I locked the screen and did something else for a while. I went to go shut it down that night, and it wouldn't show me the login screen for unlocking the screen, and it showed me the spinning cursor instead. I just shut the top, and the next morning it was just giving me a black screen when I opened the top.
    I held down the power button to shut it off, and later in the day turned it back on again, and it seemed to be working. I was running a few applications (Firefox, Bitpim, and Transmission) when it started crashing again. The menu bar didn't work, the dock wouldn't show, keyboard shortcuts didn't work, etc. I shut the top and went somewhere for a few hours.
    I came back, and was going to shut down the computer by holding the power button, so while it was still in sleep I unplugged both of my external hard drives. When I unplugged the USB one it turned on the computer, so I opened it, typed in my password, and plugged the drives back in. The computer seemed to be working again, but about a minute later a window popped up saying my startup disk's space was low. When I'd shut the top that morning there had been around 40 - 50GB left, but now there was about 500MB left on the disk. The size of my User folder was still the same - around 20GB, and I'm trying to see the size of the System folder now, but the hard drive is being extremely slow. I'm also trying to use Disk Inventory X, but it's taking an extremely long time (like 10 minutes for a file that's only a few KB).
    The dock also seems to be "frozen" - no new applications I open show in the dock, even if I'm using them, and when I clicked to open them in finder they showed up in my recently opened folder in the Dock, but didn't actually open. I clicked on them again through that folder and they actually open, but it still doesn't show them in finder. Applications that I've quit (and their process is gone in Activity Monitor) are still in the Dock with the little dot under them that they're open.
    The Macbook is still under warranty, but I live far away from the closest Apple Store, and it would be difficult for me to get anyone to drive me there, so I'd prefer some sort of a solution where I wouldn't need to bring it in (But I know I'll probably need to, and I will be able to, just not for a week or two).
    Are any of the problems related? Is there anything I can do on my own to fix it? Should I try rebooting it, even if the hard drive is almost empty (Doesn't that cause problems booting it?), or should I wait until Disk Inventory X finishes first?
    Edit: There was a folder in /Volumes that had the name of my external hard drive, and had some files in it (The ones that were being used in Transmission), so I deleted those and got the hard drive space back. All of the other problems are still happening though - my dock is still all screwed up, etc.

    Also, some more details:
    I while ago I tried rebooting and it just gave me a gray screen and played the startup chime over and over, but I held down the power button and tried again and it worked. However, when I boot it stays on the gray screen for a while before it shows me the apple logo, then it stays on that for a while before it shows me the spinning thing that it's loading. Also, once it boots it hangs on a blue screen for a while before letting me log in.
    When I look in Console there's always a million "Feb 5 18:19:58 localhost kernel[0]: Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad: family specific matching fails" for every piece of hardware from every boot.
    For a while when I tried verifying my hard drive using Disk Utility it crashed the computer. I've tried repairing permissions, checked my SMART status, and used various maintenance tools.

  • Trouble w/ iTunes & external hard drives: iTunes doesn't like to play nice

    This is a story about my external hard drives and my macbook pro. Some time ago, I moved my itunes music folder with all of my songs and movies consolidated to it onto external hard drive #1, but kept my itunes organizational data on my macbook pro's internal hard drive. Life was good. I had more internal hard drive space on my macbook pro then ever because all my songs and movies were gone, and itunes worked flawlessly as long as hard drive #1 was connected.
    To prepare for the future, I also dragged a copy of my itunes music folder with all my songs and movies in it onto hard drive #2 for safekeeping. Now, i had 2 copies of my itunes songs and movies, one on each hard drive. My insurance policy was in place. One day, hard drive #1 stopped mounting on my computer. It was time for old #1 leave me for the sweet peace of the afterlife. I bought a new hard drive, hard drive #3. I dragged my backup of hard drive #1's old files, including my itunes music folder with all of my songs and movies, from hard drive #2 to hard drive #3.
    Now, my entire itunes data folder is sitting on hard drive #3 and yet itunes doesn't seem to want to play nice. All of my files have cute little exclamation marks next to them. When I double click on a song, iTunes pretends to be lost. It asks me to locate the mp3 and naturally I find it right in my iTunes music folder by searching for it, only this time it's sitting on hard drive #3 instead of hard drive #1. By going manually through my library this way, i could keep all playlists, play counts, ratings, and other lovely bits of data intact. However, this would take years, as my songs and movies number in the bajillions. If there isn't an easy solution I am missing, surely there must be a script or program that does this legwork for me, perhaps while I slumber.
    No one on the internet seems to have this problem; everyone wants to use their ipods to restore their songs and movies. Since I own an iPod Touch, restoring the pitiful amount of files I have on it is a waste of my time, especially when all the files from my iPod are sitting right on little old hard drive #3 anyway. Citizens of the interwebs, here my plea: I require a solution to my problem of getting iTunes to recognize the folder of data it once interfaced with so seamlessly. I require a solution that does not destroy four years worth of playlists, and preferably not the "date added" data on my tracks either. All other data is fine for me to lose, but preferably not. I already know that finding the tracks manually keeps all data intact. My first inclination is that a solution to my problem may be to speed up that process.     I followed these steps and had a strange issue come up. I don't think it was at all related following the steps above. But just double check your music BEFORE you throw out any of the music from you computers hard drive.
    Here's what happen.
    Some of my music forgot what file type they were. I had some that decided to be plist others jpg others something else. It was totally random. And a HUGE pain to replace the music. But I worked through it.

  • Firefox eventually consumes all available hard drive space while running

    I have 1-2 GB available on my hard drive. When I leave Firefox running for a while (a few hours to a few days, not sure what triggers this behavior), my available hard drive space goes down and down until it gets down to 0. If I quit Firefox, the hard drive space frees up.
    I always have multiple windows and tabs open. I'd rather not quit Firefox ever, but I have to to get my HD space back. Sometimes it doesn't seem to happen for a long time, and then it starts happening. I've been rebooting about weekly recently and it hasn't helped any.

    I would also have assumed it was just variations in VM usage & application or system memory usage - except that it may show, say, 300 MB available AFTER rebooting, and then, without my launching any applications or using the computer, just immediately rebooting a second time, show 2 GB available.... so somehow the space available isn't be allocated properly it seems to me...
    I was also afraid that I was running with too little available space - but have been doing so for months now without these problems. I've got a lot of large video files on the drive, no other drive available to transfer them to, no $$ right now for purchases... and didn't want to delete the videos. I need to transfer more to CD/DVD's but have done all the 'easy' ones that are less than 700 MB already, and have to either waste DVD's or take the time to convert them to versions that will allow the DVD to play on TV also - something I haven't tried yet and gather takes a bit of time. So I've been running along with the drive pretty full.
    I would really like to know how to find any 'junk files' like temp files, any duplicates, etc that can be safely deleted, but also not sure how to do that on a mac? So there's this issue, and also the first paragraph, e.g., that it seems to me that somehow the space available allocation isn't being properly shown - is there some way I can check that, find out what is using up the space?

    Sounds like the Time Machine Local Backup.  Try turning Time Machine Off in System Preferences to verify.

    But, your real problem is
    I forgot to mention that I tried to use Disk Utility to Verify Disk, but it cannot. I get red errors that say the MacHD is corrupt and needs to be repaired. It says that in order to do this I need to use the Disk Utility on the install disk, but Lion doesn't have one!
    Boot into Lion's Recovery (Hold ⌘R on Boot), select Disk Utility and then select Macintosh HD and click [Repair Disk]

  • Hard drive space disappeared after starting to us iDisk

    Before I started using iDisk I had about 80 G of hard drive space. Now I have 7 G!
    I have followed other threads and I have checked the Volumes folder and find my home folder there, the iDisk and my external drive.
    If I try to delete any of them I get a message that says I don't have the permissions.
    I have decided to trash iDisk. How do I get rid of it and get my drive sapce back?

    the default on my iMac was to auto-back the Macintosh HD to iDisk daily. Well, the HD had about 57 Gb of stuff on it, and the iDisk allows a max of 1 Gb, and even if you pay more, you can only get up to 4 Gb. So, the program copied to the iDisk icon on my desktop. Lost 57 Gb of space ovennight. Finally found out that its a good thing to back up (to your online iDisk acct) a few things that you want to keep. I had a tech walk me through. First, if everything is still as it was on your HD, delete the copied HD from the iDisk desktop icon. Then, you can either DL huge files (like your whole HD to some disks, or in my case, I had a freestanding 100 Gb harddrive, so I used it for the target, and backed up EVERYTHING. Now when I perform a backup, it doesn't add much-just whats new or changed.

  • What is taking up hard drive space?

    hello.
    I have a power mac (pre intel) quad core desktop running 10.5.8.
    I have noticed it being very sluggish lately.
    From taking 5 minutes to boot up, to browsers taking longer to launch(with the color wheel spinning longer until the browser is fully ready), to inputing text into fields in a browser window(the text gets entered a second or two after typing). Even when I open a finder window, the icons for every file, as well as the size listing of each file/folder will take like 10 seconds to start loading one at a time. I never noticed that before.
    So I opened disk utility, and noticed that I have filled up 160GB out of the 233GB that this hard drive has. That seemed like a really high number.
    So I added up the total size of the home folders in all 4 users on this computer, and they add up to 27GB. The system folder is 4 gigs, and the main Library folder at the top level is 51 gigs. I don't think there is anything left. That adds up to 82GBs. Where is the other 78GBs coming from?
    I know I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what.
    Even still, I don't know that this is the reason for my computer to act sluggish, but now I'm curious how I'm filling up so much hard drive space.
    Any thoughts on finding this info out, and/or fixing the sluggish issue?

    On the space issue, has everybody emptied trash? You each have your own and if somebody doesn't...  There's varous utilities for scanning drives for space usage. Some are free, others not. I think Omnidisksweeper is free.  Search the Discussions for this subject and the others will probably be mentioned.
    A few GB are kind of hidden and not accounted for, I think. Some cache files, etc.
    160? I mean only 160? That's peanuts by modern standards.
    Slow computer. Might start by verifying hard drive with Disk Utility.  Installing and using Applejack would be good too.  Are you sure everybody is logged out and didn't leave a ton of applications running in their account?

    I have more hard drive space on my iPod than I do on my computer (I have a very old computer). Is there any possible way that I could transfer songs and videos onto my iPod and then be able to delete them from my computer, in order to make more space for new songs and videos?

    Yes, you can do this.
    With the iPod docked, you to preferences in iTunes and set the iPod to be updated manually. That way, it won't remove anything on the iPod unless you tell it to.
    Then load as many CDs/Tunes/videos as you can onto your computer and manually copy them to the iPod. When done, you can delete those items without affecting the iPod and thus free up the space for the next load. Repeat as often as necessary.
    If you left the iPod set to automatically update, each time you deleted the tunes from the PC, it would delete them from the iPod.
    One thing you need to consider though is that if your music is only on the iPod, you'll loose everything if the iPod has a problem that either requires it to be replaced or reinitialized. This doesn't happen often, but it could happn. You should therefore ensure you've got a backup copy of everything (ie, the original CDs or that you burn copies of everything before you delete them.

  • Hard drive space, every second another MBytes the dust

    So, I just updated to 10.5.5, and seem to be having some problems with a really wierd bug. I run a gen 1 MacBook, 1Ghz CoreDuo with 2Gb Rab and 60Gb hard drive. Upon start up my hard drive reads at 4.6 Gb available, however, for every second the machine is active I seem to lose space. I thought it might be swap space, but what doesn't make any sense is that in the last five minutes the only programs I've had running are Safari, iTunes and an open Finder window. Activity Monitor is listing Memory at 1.36 Gb Free, yet I my hard drive space dissappers faster and faster with the more applications I start running, even though I haven't yet gotten my physical memory maxed out, there is always atleast 100 Mb of Free memory, any ideas? Is this a known bug in 10.5.5? Thanks for any help

    Just a couple of things. Running a machine with less than 10-20% free space is courting disaster since OS X uses free disk space for virtual memory to augment physical memory (RAM). Activity Monitor should show you how much disk space is allocated to vm. Your only good solution, IMO, is to off-load about 10-15 GB of data from your boot volume and run the machine with ample free space.

  • Running out of hard drive space---can I use my external hard drive-??

    I have a 16GB iPod nano. I hope I can explain my problem well enough.
    My laptop computer has the iTunes that I use for syncing my iPod. It has over 25gb of songs in it, but my problem is that it has completely run out of hard drive space, and I don't think I can delete anything else.
    I have a 250 GB external hard drive that also has all my songs backed up on it, that has hard drive space left on it.
    Is there a way to load new music into the external hard drive, that will sync up to the iPod when I connect it to the laptop, WITHOUT putting a copy of it into the laptop, and taking up space-?
    The way it appears to me, and I may be wrong, is that there are 2 copies of eaxh song on my laptop---the one in my music folder, and then the one in the iTunes folder. Is that correct-?
    OR, is there a way to remove some of the songs from the laptop, and put them into the external hard drive, but will still sync up to the iPod-?
    Thanks for any help that anyone can offer, I'm desperate ~!
    I'm not sure if this can be done, but I'd hate to think that I cannot put new music onto my iPod.

    I think your best move would be to the move the entire iTunes library including of all of its file to your external hard drive and running your iTunes from there. You can even have it so that all newly imported music is saved to the external drive as well.
