Tape to Mac

Good morning and a very happy new year to the Apple community.
Quick question. Like most of the 60's generation I have loads of cassette tapes with beloved music. Some are commercially recorded, some are home recorded. I would dearly love to get them into my iTunes before they deteriorate beyond use.
I've looked online and there seems to be only a couple of products that would do this. I need one that has a tape playing facility as all my tape players gave up the ghost ages ago. None of them get star ratings. Has anyone come across one that does the job simply, and effectively?
Thanks for any help.

I've not used any of these devices - I assume you have seen cassette players with a built-in USB interface - but you don't have to be limited to these. Any cassette player can be connected to your iMac's line-in socket (you will need a lead with a 3.5mm stereo jack at the iMac end, and either the same thing at the cassette machine end or two RCA jacks (phono plugs). If you look around, probably in the second-hand market, you may be able to find a decent quality machine, which should be better than the USB versions.
Once plugged into the line in you can record from it with the QuickTime player or, better, an audio recorder/editor such as Audacity (free but a bit flaky) or Amadeus Pro ($40 but better).
It's best to record material in uncompressed format to begin with - AIFF (Mac) or WAV (Windows). Then you can move them into iTunes and convert them to a compressed format suitable for iPods.
In iTunes Preferences>General click the 'Import Settings' button and choose 'AAC encoder (it may be the default). Amend the bitrate if you want to - 128kb/s stereo produces reasonable results. (You can concert to MP3 if you prefer - choose 'MP3 encoder', but I would recommend 192 kb/s).
Now go to the library, select your AIFF/WAV files and from the 'Advanced' menu choose 'Create AAC version'. This will make duplicate AAC versions and you can delete the AIFF versions in iTunes (you will still have the original AIFF/WAV files outside iTunes if you haven't deleted them).

Can someone tell me step by step how to record from audio tape to mac book with the help of xitel inport deluxe system.  Somebody had mentioned that we do not have to download the software - so I did not, but the computer does not recognize the connection.  How can I know it is connected - can someone please tell me step by step as teaching a layman.  Thanks.

It seems this question is best posed to the makers of "xitel".

  • How to record vhs tape to mac

how to record vhs tape to mac

Most "on the fly" digitization for the Mac was abandoned as "just too fussy" for successful daily use. Instead, cameras that pre-digitized and passed the digitized packets (with NO time contraints) were adopted instead.
The Hardware to do this capture is now old and cranky, and never got substantially cheaper. It is not a good value.
The affordable way to transfer VHS tapes to digital form today is to find a local service to do a one-time transfer for a fee.

  • Converting from Tape to Mac

I want to edit some tapes from my Sony Handycam DCR-IP7E in iMovie but it cannot detect the camera. Is there any way that I can get the files onto the Mac so I can edit in iMovie?

I have the correct cable it just does not recognise the camera.
As Daniel pointed out: Your camera is NOT compatible with iMovie. Take it back or sell it.
Is there another way to import the tapes?
Sort of. There are two methods:
A: Using a sample application from Apple's Firewire SDK, you can get the MPEG-2 files off the camera and onto the hard drive. Then you can use MPEG Streamclip with Apple's MPEG-2 QT playback plug-in to convert to DV, which you can import to iMovie.
B: Have your camera act as an analog VHS VCR:

  • Books on tape for Macs

is there a "books on tape" application for Macs which has both audio AND video (shows the words - like a Kindle or an iPad)??? Thanks

Sorry, Mike, my post looks like I was responding to your comment but I meant to answer the OP.
I found an interesting (but not memorable) link to either Kindle's or Nook's color book-with-audio services after posting. I care nothing about those products so had no idea there was a tool on those platforms so, yes, it seems like a logical money-maker for iPad.

  • Reel to Reel audio tapes to Mac

I have sme old recordings on reel-to-reel audio tapes which I want to convert via my G5 into digital sound then to put on DVD does anybody know of what way I can best do this and the hardware/software I might need to complete thi task. The computer used is Power Mac dual 2.5 GHz running on Leopard

You just need to use the appropriate adapters to plug the output of the reel-to-reel player to the audio input port of the G5 (the mini-stereo jack that has the symbol with two triangles). Most likely, this would be a red/white RCA to mini-stereo jack adapter cable, available at any Radio Shack.
Once the sound is coming in, you need software to record it in real-time. One free program is
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ <- Audacity
There are other non-free apps, such as
    <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://www.freeverse.com/apps/app/?id=5012 <- Sound Studio
    and
    <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/wiretap/ < - WireTap Studio
Note: There is no built-in feature in Mac OS X that lets you hear the incoming sound using the computer's speakers. So when you connect the sound input and you don't hear anything, there is probably nothing wrong. You need to run a sound recording program and set it to play-through the audio input to the speakers. If you just want to initially hear it without running a big sound recording program, you can run this simple little app that just does the play-through function and nothing else.

  • Device for importing old VHS tapes into Mac to edit and make DVDs

Having tried one device unsuccessfully, we're looking for a device that we can use to convert old VHS tapes so we can edit in iPhoto/ Movie and store on DVDs. The one we tried came from the Apple retail store, but the Genius Bar was not able to get it to work. Thanks.

Here is how I do that (this only works with non-copy protected videos):
Connect the VHS tape player via RCA cables to an analogue-to-digital converter like, for example, the Canopus ADVC110.
Connect the converter via firewire to your Mac.
Import into iMovie as DV stream (I use iMovie 6). Edit out irritating commercials (from TV programs) and other glitches.
Convert to standard DVD format of mpeg2 in iDVD and burn to reliable media like Verbatim DVD-R.
    Job done!

  • Video tape to mac

I have a video camera that still uses video tape. I would like to get a home movie from this camera on to my mac so that I can edit it and write it to DVD. I am able to record the film to a DVD but I cant import the film from DVD onto my mac. What is the cheapest way to achieve this?

    Hi Pete,
your sentence I am able to record the film to a DVD confuses me a little..?? you're not doing that with you Mac, am I right?
    you have two options:
my guess is, you mean with "tape" the old VHS-C cassettes, right? that has to be handled as any analogue material, search the forum for "VHS"
another option, with less quality, but without using any converters/digital camcorders is, to convert the DVDs for usage in iM.
    that can be done with

  • Trouble Using iMovie 10.0.3 and firewire to copy digital tape to mac

My older mac and iMove were able to use the firewire connector (older version of that, too) to recognize my camera and import video played from my camera to the computer.  This is not working now.
I have a Panasonic Digital Video Camcorder - Model # PV-GS400 and also a Sony Digital Video Camcorder DCR-PC10 - both of which worked in the past and have 4 pin connectors.  I just purchased a new 4 pin to 800 9-pin cable to be able to connect to my new Mac Mini with Maverics OS.  My iMovie version is 10.0.3
    Any thoughts?

  • Transferring from Hi 8 tape to Mac

    Hi
I can't see this particular question so hope I am not duplicating one that appears somewhere else in the forums.
I have a Sony hi 8 Handycam (CCD-TR840E - with s-Video output) which I think is about to give up on me. I need to transfer video to my iMac (iMovie 08 v71.1.4) as soon as possible in case it does give up. I have seen various connections but none state suitability for Mac. I have seen references to Firewire being better than USB and vice versa. Is anyone able to point me at the right solution for best quality? - storage size is not an issue and I would love to retain as high quality as possible.
    Regards

To get your Hi-8 video into iMovie, look at the Canopus ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (not sure about iMovie 08).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
    http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC300/index.php
You will need to use a "Real" Mac, (they have a Firewire input).
I have seen references to Firewire being better than USB and vice versa. Is anyone able to point me at the right solution for best quality?
Firewire is best (you must have it to use the Canopus unit).
I use both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06, if I want to make a DVD I much prefer iMovie 06. iMovie 08 is not as DVD friendly as iMovie 06.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and _original quality_. If you share your movie from iMovie '08, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
iMovie 08 was primarily designed for SIMPLE editing.
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

  • Cassette Tapes To Mac USB

    Hi there....
I want to transfer some audio cassette music (etc) to my Mac. Are those cassette to USB gadgets any good and are they stereo outputs?
    Cheers,
    Harry

    Greetings-
I bought an ION Audio Tape2PC USB Cassette Deck to do just what you want to do.  Although the name has PC in it (shudder), it comes with Mac drivers and works as advertised. It copies the files into iTunes.  You have to manually add the song title, artist, and other information, including the cover art, but it does get the songs into iTunes.

  • Tried to transfer 8mm tapes to mac, then burn to disc, not working???

    test

    Hi
Where in the process did it go awry ?
You know that a DVD can be burnes in at least two fasions ?
Data-DVD - as Yo make when You store files on a DVD on DeskTop/Finder - then Burn on Eject - or -
Video-DVD - as any Movie-DVDs to be played on any DVD-Players - THIS ONE REQUIRE a DVD Authoring Program as iDVD, Roxio Toast, Burn or alike. It can not be made wothout this.
In FinalCut Pro X - You can Share/Export as a Video-DVD - but it's just that this program got integrated with FCP-X.
If You want a Video-DVD then
    • You need a DD authoring program
    • Video DVDs are much more picky in DVD brand quality used - I only use Verbatim
    • DVD type matters - DVD+/-RW usually DO NOT WORK - DVD+R only plays on newre DVD-players - so I use DVD-R
    • SL-DVD works more often to me than DL-DVDs
    • BURN SPEED - is essential - I never go faster than x4 - most often I use x2
    Just to share some thoughts.
Please describe more if You keep on haveing troubles.
