Task Manager: Applications vs Processes

I'm monitoring a snmp-agent enabled Windows 2000 machine by retrieving the hrSWRunTable from the HOST-RESOURCES-MIB. I have to code some Java that accepts the list of processes from the hrSWRunTable and outputs their respective applications. I'm wondering if this is possible.
I'm not 100% sure on the difference between an application and a process. I thought an application was a collection of user processes that worked together to perform a function, while a process was a single executable module.
How does Task Manager know the difference between an application and a process? Is it because the application is running in the foreground in an open window?
My list of processes will include information on PID, name, path, parameters, run type and status.
For example, I've seen this as an application many times:
PID: 9520
name: IEXPLORE.EXE
path: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\
parameters:
run type: application
status: running
But this isn't under the application tab:
PID: 700
name: SQLAGENT.EXE
path:
parameters:
run type: application
status: running
And when I check the task manager both processes are running under the same user "user1", but only internet explorer shows up under applications.
Am I going to have to apply some sort of filter that links process names to their application?
Thanks.

This question has nothing to do with Java whatsoever. You'll probably get a much better response when you ask in a forum for Windows programmers.

Firefox does not appear on screen when started from the start menu or the shortcuts, but task manager says the process is running.

No - I get the message basically saying "Can't run program while Firefox is running. Please close down Firefox & try again".
I rebooted my computer and it all works now - but that's weird it was happening before. Kinda weirded out that it happened at all.
To avoid that happening again, I still wanna know what to do to avoid it or fix it for next time. Thanks

  • Firefox 8.0.1 will not open. IE will not open as long as Task Manager shows firefox process is running.

Running Vista Ultimate. Yesterday Firefox stopped opening. only change to system was a new video driver for Intel 965 mobile express chipset. AOL 9.6 and IE 8 also stopped opening. When I killed the 2 firefox processes from Task Manager IE 8 opened. But AOL 9.6 is stuck at "updating locations". I tried the troubleshooting page but since most require the application to be open I was not able to try anything except restarting the computer and reinstalling after deleting the Mozilla Firefox folder.

  • When I close firefox it doesn't close. I go to reopen it and it says that it is already running. I have to use task manager to end process to close it before i can log back on.

After browsing and I close Firefox it appears to close.
However when I go to reopen it later I get a message that Firefox is already open and I need to close it. The only wany I can close it is by using Task Manger to end process.

Must be the "hang at exit" problem. You already know how to do Step1; now just determine which Add-on (Extension or Plugin) is causing the problem.<br /><br />

  • When I close firefox (in windows 7), it doesn't fully close, I have to go to the task manager and end process before I can open it again.

Every time I try to open firefox, a window pops up saying that another instance of firefox is already running (still open from the last time firefox was open) and that another instance can't be opened. To solve this, I have to go into task manager and end the firefox (32) process. I think this started happening after getting the newest version of firefox a couple weeks ago. My computer is a month-old thinkpad with windows 7 64 bit.

when I shut down firefox and then later try to start it again a box comes up that says it is already running but it won't come on. So I have to go into my task manager and end the process before I can start it again. How do I solve this problem?

That is "hanging at exit". You can ignore the first part, since you already know how to do that.

I would like to know where to go to change the words "Task Manager" on the LOGIN page to what I would it to say? I tried to change it under TEMPLATE then login. It's embedded somewhere, I can't find it. Please help.

  • After updating firefox I can not open the shortcut browser icon, but can open IE, and my whole system seems to be slow. solution please? Now when I open firefox the task manager says the process firefox is running 100% CPU in the background

Updated firefox to latest version with custom install, no task bar or startup (in past I think I usually included startup) late Friday nite. Then when trying to open Firefox shortcut on desktop Sat. could not, would freeze up. Then if I tried to open IE same would happen. After rebooting a # of times, opened IE 1st and worked but still could not open Mozilla within IE or the desktop. Also all our 3 wireless laptops including apple have no problem with this.

You said you tried the recommended solution, but didn't mention what that solution was. Try, from the Firefox menu bar:
    <br /><br />
    Tools -> Options -> Content
where you will find an option to block pop-up windows. If that box is checked but there are sites from which you would like to allow pop-up, click the button "Exceptions..." to add sites to your exception list.
See also the help article [[Pop-up blocker]].

  • Captivate 5 won't open after clicking icon, but shows up in the task manager as a "Process". Help??

Can you please give me step by step help? I think I may have to uninstall and reinstall, but I want that to be a last effort.
    -Jake

    Hi Jake,
    Please verify the following --
    1) If you reboot your machine and the problem still exists?
    2) If yes, then you might try verifying in case you have dual monitor and the application might be opened on second montior (which could be disconnected may be)
    3) Is the problem persists, try recreating your preferences --
on Xp: C:Documents and Settings\Local SettingsApplication DataAdobeCaptivate 5
    - on Vista/Win7:C:Users\AppDataLocalAdobeCaptivate 5
and then relaunch. Let me know if it still doesn't work.

  • Firefox does not start in Windows Vista. It can be seen in the task manager that the process is running. But nothing happens. After deleting the process it still does not work.

Are there any issues with Firefox 10 and Vista? IE works.

    Hi webero,
There are no Known Issues that I am aware of. You should take a look at [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]] and our article called [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Firefox-not-start Firefox will not start].
    Hopefully this helps!

  • I've had issues with Firefox hanging in memory even if I try to remove it using the Windows task manager's "End Process" button. My only alternative is to force a reboot on my PC.

Since upgrading to Firefox 7.0.1 I've noticed the abovementioned problem. I usually have a couple of app tabs with GMail information on them (two different e-mail accounts, one of which is just the contacts page and the other is the inbox and one tab with a GMail calendar for one of the accounts) and my home page, which is Google News. While I cannot say for certain that it is related to multimedia streaming, it does appear to happen after I play some kind of video file like the videos for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. My O/S is XP Pro SP3, my PC is a Dell Inspiron 700m w/2GB RAM. The Add-Ons that I have, as far as I can remember, are AdBlock Plus, Tab Mix Plus, WOT Safe Browsing Tool, and Download Statusbar along with the usual Java stuff. My Adobe plug-ins are always updated whenever I get an update message.
