Teaching Myself Sharepoint

I have Visual Studio 2013 Professional and SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition on Windows 7 (64-bit) which I've been using to learn how to build web apps, however I'd like to go on to teach myself Sharepoint Development. What's the best way I can go
about this? Is it possible? Preferably without having to use a virtual machine with Win Server, or having to shell out for a hosting package.

I'm looking for some guidance. I'm starting on a Sharepoint migration project from 2007 to 2013 soon and need to teach myself all I possibly can rather quickly. I've been looking all over the internet to try to find free classes and tutorials.

Start by reading all the articles on the following web sites. to upgrade from 2007 to 2013 you need to either use a third party tool or upgrade first to 2010 and then 2013.

Teaching myself CSS

Hi, I'm teaching myself CSS and am having trouble when I'm
creating multiple navigation menus. I've got the navs in separate
divs, but each time I set new CSS properties to the new nav it
seems to be leaking into the other divs and applying some
formatting there.
Also, the pages appear fine on older MAC IE, but not in MAC
Safari or PC IE? Perhaps it's a browser issue? I'm new to all this.

Basic vid work starts with the NLE or "non-linear editor" (too long to explain the name!) such as Premiere Pro. That's where you set up your timeline and do the basic chopping/blending of bits into the greater whole.
If your footage is the same as your needed output, great ... but if you're going into a specific output frame-size like this you might need to set your sequence settings BEFORE adding footage. Use the above list and only worry about frame-rate (the 29.97) and frame size/ratio of 1280x720 first.
Depending on how involved you need to get, you might use Speedgrade for "grading", the modification of the look of the footage ... color, contrast, gamma, all that ... and perhaps need to add graphics or "lower thirds" in After Effects. Both the later are complex programs in their own rights.
I checked out that link ... those ads are fairly complex bits of work. Some of the ones were mostly or all created with "stills", still-camera images placed on the timeline for set periods of time. Somewhat easier in some ways to work with for this as a starter as you can fit them to any crop you need. Others were a mix of stills and moving footage so those do take some care in what the original footage was shot at compared to what the requirements are you'll need to output it as. I think this would be MUCH easier to do on a timeline set for that frame-size to begin with, and conform any non-conforming footage to that on import to the project.
Next ... wow ... the graphics for these are pretty nice, and keyed for moving, transparency over vid below ... that sort of thing. That will take a few questions here or over on the AfterEffects forum I'm thinking. That could easily be the hardest part of this job. While some level of graphics can be made within PrPro, Ae is really much better for that sort of thing. And those are well past my experience ...

Teaching myself CSS - Can anyone help me with my navigation?

First, I must say that I (and trial & error) have taught myself everything I thus far know about web design. I've never submitted my code to be critiqued in a forum so I'm hoping it's not a horrible mess.
That being said, I'd love it if someone could assist me in figuring out how to get my "sub navigation" to look the way I want it to. I've only put basic text in it's general place for the moment, instead of attempting a million things & cluttering up my code any more than I already have.
Basically, I want the sub navigation to appear (to the right) when the user hovers over each of the 4 respective large navigation images. I want it to appear outside of the main content, or rather outside of the sidebar in which the main navigation is placed. (eventually I plan to figure out how to code the whole hidden/show on hover thing...but that is my secondary concern to placement at this time. def wouldn't mind tips for that also though!!)

I'd investigate using the "spry vertical menu' which ships with Dreamweaver. yes you will need to alter the css BUT you will quickly have a good basis for your navigation.
There are plenty of people around here, especially Gramps, who knows the DW spry stuff inside out and will help out if you get stuck.
First get a basic spry vertical navigation onyour page >Insert>Spry>Spry Menu Bar>Choose vertical option.
Go into code view and change the spry html structure to as below: (You can copy and paste the code below inplace of the code that is put there automatcally).

You should have 3 large boxes on the page which when moused over turn blue and a submenu flicks out to the right.
Now add the following css selectors. One for each of your large Nav images. Change - yourNavImageOne.gif - to the name of your image. If the image is in a folder named 'images' then add that before the image name - images/yourNavImageOne.gif. Do the same for yourNavImageTwo.gif and yourNavImageThree.gif

Teaching Myself Python. How Can I Stop The Program From Closing :)

I wrote a program today that will log into a router here at work and check if the line protocols are up and if i can see thir mac address. If i run it from the IDLE program it works fine. When i run it as just crosnet.py it runs fine but closes before i can see the output. I imagine there is some simple line that will have run and just sit? Or even better, loop back to the beginning and wait for me to give it a new number to then telnet with.

I want to teach myself Photoshop online with version 5.0. Advisable?

I am totally new to forums and Adobe Photoshop. I intend on going online to a free tutorial site to learn how to use Photoshop.
My intentions are to purchase version 5.0 to use for the tutorial. Would this be OK? I will only have to pay $30 for this version.

Actually, the "PS" does stand for Photoshop. There are two different programs, with Photoshop in the name, Photoshop (now up to CS5), and Photoshop Elements (now up to version 9). They are similar, and one could probably refer to Photoshop as Photoshop Element's "big brother." The full Photoshop has more functions, controls and capabilities, than does Photoshop Elements, which also has some easy to use buttons and presets, so the user does not need to know the specifics of some operations, quite so much, as with the full-featured Photoshop program.
Then, and for video editing, there are two Adobe programs, also with similar names, Premiere Pro (now up to CS 5.5) and Premiere Elements (now up to version 9). Again, those are similar, but Premiere Pro offers much more power and flexibility, while Premiere Elements offers more "easy" solutions with buttons and presets. Often, one can get very good prices on a Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements bundle - often getting the both for about what they'd pay for just one of the two programs. Those two programs also interface nicely with each other, as many users will do SlideShows, and similar where they combine Still Images and Video.

Sharing a PPT - using Skype for teaching

Hello.
I have an online teaching school, teaching kids in China with teachers in the UK.
I currently use Cisco Webex as its functionality for teaching is great, giving me PPT sharing ability and tools to draw and highlight on the PPT slides which is useful. BUT, the connection can be a little bad with Cisco, so I want to try Skype.
I want to know is there a way I can use Skype for the same functions as above ? I will only have up to 4 students per lesson. The most important functionality is to share the PPT.

I am a former teacher myself. I was hoping other Community contributors would join this conversation before I did!
The Skype client software does not provide a white board or writing tools per se. What I propose is Skype's screen share facility, which for a group call up to ten (10) particants would require a Premium subscription. The reason for this is that Skype considers the screen share to be a video feed, so a call with two people using their webcams + screen share = "group call" in Skype. To take this explanation from a different angle, an audio call to single student, where you as the teacher would use screen sharing, would not require a Premium subscription.
Another note to consider if you choose to use screen sharing: the facility does not work like a corporate group document sharing platform. Only one person (call participant) could share their screens at a time.

Books to teach me C, Objective C, Cocoa help please

I want to teach myself Cocoa since I was told thats the best language to start with for a beginner OS X programmer. To do this I need to learn Objective C. To do that I need to learn C. Can someone tell me the best book for learning C, then Objective C, then Cocoa? I have a C book but ive hit a road block and I dont understand it so I dont think something I can use.. The C book is The C Programming Language Second Edition by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritche. My Cocoa book that I have is Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X by Aaron Hillegass.. the problem with my roadblock is this file copying program.. it doesnt do anything then the book gives me challenges.. well If my program does nothing then I dont know how to do the challanges which is determine the value of EOF (end of file) as 0 or 1, then print it:

In C, input and output are considered to be files, so you could sort of consider it to be a file copying program in that sense. If you ran it in the Terminal, you could use it to copy files by using input and output redirection.

But that's neither here nor there. The thing is, the K&R book on C isn't really the best introduction for a beginner. It's a great book for a more experienced programmer who wants to learn C, but for a beginner, you'll need something more basic.
I thought the Xcode libraries had its own guides and stuff to learning C Obj C and whatever..
The Xcode documentation does include information for learning Objective-C if you are already proficient with C. It does not include anything on learning C. The information on Objective-C is meant for experienced programmers, not someone who is new to programming.
My advice would actually be to start with a language other than C if you want to learn how to program. Scheme is an excellent language to learn on, but it can be a little tough if you're not taking a class on it; if you're feeling ambitious, you can try reading The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, which can be found here: http://mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/full-text/book/book.html. This is how I learned to program, and it gave me the background to easily learn the other languages you need.
If you're not feeling quite as ambitious, or if you want to get started doing Cocoa programming as soon as possible, Ruby and Python are both pretty decent languages. They're much easier than learning C and Objective-C, and they have pretty much full access to all of the Cocoa programming interfaces on Leopard. I prefer Ruby myself, but some like Python better.

Self teaching and need help please

Hi, I'm trying to teach myself Java. Trying being the operative word. I've purchased the book "Java Software Solutions" and I'm trudging my way through it. Anyway, to my question: it's a 6 parter that was an test-yourself question in the book that I'm having a lot of trouble with. It says to use a program provided by Lewis and Loftus and edit that program so that it, 1. asks the user for a file name and when the user enters that on the keyboard it finds the file, 2. read each line and place it in a string array and setup an integer count variable to keep track of the lines read so it stops at the end, 3. Create an int array (of the size given by the count determined above) and filling it with the number part of each element of the String array. Create a String array (of the size given by the count determined above) and fill it with the name part of each element of the above String array, 4. Finish the implementation of the Sorts class to include the selectionSort method for arrays of Comparable. Include the isSorted method as a static boolean method that will take either an array of int or an array of Comparable, 5. Use the Sorts class to do both insertionSort and selectionSort on both arrays and refill the arrays between sorts and test the arrays before and after sorting with the isSorted method, 6. Give output consisting of the results of testing with the isSorted method before and after each sort on each array, the array names should be given, the count should be given.

Whoa. What exactly are you asking here? Not to be mean, but this is the type of question goes unanswered in the forums. It looks too much like you're trying to get someone to do your work.
My advice is, take it slow. Think about what you have read. Apply it to each step. Since you haven't given an indication of where you are in the book, I'm going to assume based on the problem that you're fairly far. I'm assuming you know how to compile and run a program, how to write a class, what inheritance is, etc.
Step 1: How do you get input from the user? Has the book covered streams yet?
Step 2: Again, do you understand what streams are and how to read from them?
Step 3: Have you read about Wrappers and parsing strings?
etc.
Generally, in the forum, the kind of questions that get good responses are fairly specific, as in:
"Hi, I tried this code:
<code snippet />
and I'm getting this error:
<error />
What could be wrong?"
If you do that, you'll find this forum a great learning aid. But really, a lot of effort has to be put in before you bring it here.

Installing Adobe CS6 (Specifically Illustrator) on a non OS drive

Hello,
In my original post (below) I've been having some issues with Illustrator. Basically, it crahses on launch when I have my Wacom installed and the brush stool cuts out in mid stroke. I have CS6 installed to an SSD separate to the OS. I was told that this could be the problem. Should I reinstall CS6 onto the OS drive? Is it happier all in one place?

I'm fairly new to Adobe CS and I've been running into a few issues. I've used it fairly consistently at work, but I want to branch out and do some graphic design on my own, so I bought a student license and set about teaching myself! Anyway, I got a Wacom Intuos5 medium tablet to go with this and I think it's causing a few issues. First, it seems like it's causing Illustrator CS6 to crash on launch. If I open an Illustrator document (I'm running Win7 64bit with 16gb of RAM), I get a message that Illustrator CS6 has stopped working. I close that pop-up and try to open the same document again and it opens just fine. I read in a release note that this is due to a plugin associated with Inkling, but I don't have that installed, so I'm not sure that this is what I'm experiencing. I've uninstalled the tablet and went about launching Illustrator again and it seems to working just fine. Is there a fix for this?
Second, I was just getting familiar with the brush tool the other day and noticed that when I used the tablet, the brush tool just quits drawing after about 7 seconds. So I made the same scribbles (just making figure eights over and over again) with my mouse and it seems to cut out after about 15 seconds this time. Is there something I might be doing wrong or this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?
Also, I'm running two SSDs and a 1TB HDD. I have WIN7 and other small things on one SSD and CS6 currently installed on the other SSD. Could this be an issue? I'm at work right now, but I plan on uninstalling both the table and CS6 and only installing CS6 onto my WIN7 SSD to see if this clears anything up.

I am a self taught geek, started in the trenches (trouble shooting the owners computer when I was a bartender) and built my knowledge up to the point an Analyst II position was created for me.
My knowledge is mostly in software though and I am now trying to teach myself server administration. Ive always had great experience with TechNet but Im still a baby on the server side and I'm finding the information more in depth than Im ready
for.

*tl;dr- Easy way to take the frames of a GIF and change them to a BMP (there are about 40 frames per Action)
So- My friend was learning Java to build a game on Android while I would create the graphical resources. It will be a fighting game- so I went ahead and made animations for the moves and all the characters.

I read faster than him- and I got to a point where I find out that graphical resources have to be in BMP (or so the author tells me) and that each frame in gif is a seperate BMP.

Yes, Ps CS6 can do that. An animated GIF will be opened as a document with each frame on a separate layer. Then the "Export Layers to Files" script can export a folder of BMPs.

How can I pubish SWF interactive magazine to flash based website? It's not working!

I hope someone can help me launch my first interactive magazine (SWF) to our website with ID 5. Okay, my hard copy mag came out great so then I started on the interactive edition. Everything was going swell with adding 3 short videos ( FLV ) and creating 3 slide shows. When I previewed it by exporting to SWF I could preview it in my browser fine. Page curls, fade in words (although the “hide until animated” options only works in two out of about 7 instances. I then followed instructions from another Adobe exercise, exported it to Flash, went to Publish Settings, but of course when I pressed “publish” I didn’t get the same result as the teacher…I got an error message about text. I searched a forum with the same message I got and saw that making sure my text setting was set for Classic, solved someone else’s problem. So I did and was able to “publish”. But now, when I open either the SWF or HTML file, it’ just rapidly repeating the 12 pages in my file in a loop!

I have spent most of the summer self teaching myself InDesign CS5 (not easy!) and am excited to be able to put out an interactive SWF file that can be opened in a Flash player through our Flash based website. I feel like I’m just inches away for launch but now I’m getting frustrated. Isn’t this going to be possible?
Also, when I publish it in Flash, it creates a SWF file AND an HTML file. But on our website, I have only one option to make a link to a document OR an outside link to open a file. How does that work?
Many thanks for whoever can help me out here. This was supposed to be a spring issue. Had to change it to summer and now I guess it’s a fall launch!

Originally, I exported the file to SWF (player) and just tried to link that file from our flash based website. It opens fine, page curls fine, slide shows fine, but when you click on the photos with videos, page 5 (father and baby) and two others, the image disappears and only a white comes up to fill that area.

Rob, here is where i have very limited knowledge: As I said we use a flash based (read very user friendly) web hosting company. When I am in the back end to upload the swf file, I have only one option - "attach a video, attach a document, attach a link" so how would I upload a "folder" with more than one item to the server?
I thought it would be considered a video since the SWF file says SWF movie, but when I when i try to upload as a video, it doesn't come up as importable. (am i sounding really stupid?) Maybe I should admit that yes, I'm an ID5 newbie AND yes, I'm no spring chicken but I have been working in CS2,3,4 for several years and now 5 and am quite proficient in the create aspect of Adobe products. It's just now the technical part about how to actually get my in work published to the site.There isn't anyone else in my company able to help me so I have to reach out to this forum!
I love ID and this is just my first effort but I'm looking forward to creating many more interactive magazines for my company.
