Tell the truth

to Russ H.
I know trying to find the general health/ viability of software while reading these forums is like trying to gauge the general health of the population while visiting the hospital emergency room.
I run Comp 3.5.3 under both 10.9 (which broke the Qmaster pref pane) and 10.8 (in which it seems to have some funky issues). I have and use Adobe Media Encoder CC and have not yet found the settings that generate h.264 output that looks as good as what I can get out of C 3.5.
So I'm asking your informed opinion regarding the viability of Compressor 4.1
Have you been able to set up and run a render farm reliably?
Have you found it stable enough for production work?
Thanks for your insights.
Best,
x

Hi, X.
Full Disclosure: The compression application I use the most is 3.5, which I run on Snow Leopard. It's been nearly bullet-proof for me and fulfills probably 95% of my needs, When I need something that 3.5 can't do (say, an H.264 MP4 and so forth), I'll use MPEG Streamclip, Compressor 4.07…or an older version of Adobe.
I'm still in the testing mode with 4.1 in my spare time. This new app seems to have a lot of promise - beyond the cool UI. There are some new encoding options (e.g., CABAC) and Larry Jordan's speed tests were an eye-opener – although those gains don't apply across the board. (It is definitely faster for me overall than 4.07 on Mavericks - as is the newest FCPX.)
I got off to a somewhat rocky start; several re-installations were a PITA and then some stability issues and some odd behavior. No, I've not tried to set it up for distributed processing with multiple machines – but I see from other users that they've had struggles.
My impression is that David Brewer has spent more time actually using this version. Perhaps he'll see this and chime in.

  • Why can't verizon tell the truth and fix my DSL for over a week

On the 10th of January, I contacted Verizon Tech to let them know I had no DSL (the phone had previously been out, but I had had DSL).  They told me to wait an hour and restart the modem.  I did that to no avail.  I continued contacting them and they kept telling me there was an outage or the problem was my modem or such.  I tried to tell them that whatever repair they made, disconnected my DSL.  They sent a new modem, they sent a technician on Thursday -- still nothing -- called and was told they were replacing the PSA and it would be up by Saturday -- called Saturday, was told the replacement part did not function and they had a new part which would fix it by Monday.  Called Sunday, was told problem was fixed on Saturday (but I still had no internet) Then they said, it was being investigated by a team in the Central office and it should be on by tomorrow -- specifically checking circuit to Central Office.    Still today, no Internet (as I predicted would happen -- it's a holiday and I cannot get answers) and when I called, they want to send another Techinician TOMORROW to investigate.  It has been 4 days since the last Tech came, it was 4 days from the date I initially called before they sent a Tech -- now they want to send a DSL tech rather than a "phone tech".
I truly believe they are trying to get me off of DSL since they don't want people on it (you cannot get back on it once off) because they want everyone to be on their EXPENSIVE FIOS system that costs over $50 a month versus my little $39 a month.  Of course, then they'll want me to get phone and TV to "bundle" and save $ -- which means my phone doesn't work during power outages after a few hours.
How do you get to speak to someone in authority over service rather than people who are going by a book that says, "check to make sure the modem is plugged in" as though it is your first time using the system you have been on since 2005?  Why is the corporate office of Verizon hiding?  Where are the Vice Presidents and Manager to take charge and get things done -- out spending their HUGE Bonuses?

I feel your pain. I had a technician come out twice, my moden replaced 3 times, and now my monthly cost has gone up but my internet speeds are not much improved.

  • BBY & Geek Squad Just Tell the Truth

I purchased my current Samsung TV on January 29, 2011. Really, my husband wandered over to the TV section, saw this TV, and like the adult kid he was said he had to have it. Best TV we ever bought. Never had one problem with it. My husband was killed 6 months after getting the TV but when I look at it I remember that little boy smile when he first saw it. We purchased the full protection Black Tie 4 year plan. Best TV ever. In January 2014, I asked the local Owensboro, KY Geek Squad to check out an issue regarding a loss of audio and video when the local cable company sent thru the Emergency Broadcast System Test. The TV's audio would cease and video would go gray and would only return when I changed the channel. The GS tech told me it was the "assy pcb main". I specifically asked if the part would be the exact same part # that was in the TV now and if it would be new not refurbished because the TV worked great, had a great picture. He said yes and ordered the part.
There are times one should listen to one's instincts and in this case I trusted GS and not my instincts. Big mistake. The GS tech came back, put in the part (in a hurry), did not resize, the part was obviously refurbished. I called GS and scheduled for a return visit to get the size of picture too fit the screen. Apparently, the part had been in a 46inch TV   While waiting for GS to return, I called Samsung. Samsung asked who put the part in the TV and told me it was the wrong part. I was then informed at that time by Samsung that GS was not a Samsung Authorized Service Center. They gave me the phone numbers of local Samsung ASC's trained work on their TVs and identify issues. After all that, the problem wasn't my TV it was the cable box. When the GS tech came back, he brought another part that someone had spilled coffee all over and it was sticky. The picture was all out of whack. I called and asked if GS would send someone more experienced and requested the specific part recommended for this TV model and version by Samsung. They said they would and another tech came. I asked this different GS tech if he was an authorized Samsung tech and he said "yes, we have six hours of training on repairing Samsung TVs".  Oh my, six hours, I felt so much better. He is qualified for brain surgery and dishonest. Great.  The TV is still out of whack. I did ask both GS techs if they had looked at the service manual for this model before coming out and both said "no."  So much for doing your research.  My poor once perfect TV has been mutilated by GS. After days of calling with my only request being that they order the correct part and not a refurbished one, I get a guy "Cole" who tells me he is ordering it directly from Samsung as we are speaking and that he is the Director over all the Geek Squad Techs. Cole tells me they are Samsung Authorized Service Techs but Cole doesn't know the number assigned to GS by Samsung nor where to find it. Odd.  Turns out he didn't order the part directly from anywhere either.  3 weeks later I get a call from Ramona telling me my options under my warranty. First, I can request a non GS authorized Samsung Service Center come to my home to try and repair the TV or I have the option to have my TV junked out. My TV is far from junk and I took the option of the outside repair which Ramona said she would inform Cole about. About an hour later, Ross whose title comes right out of a Psychology book Milgrim's study on authority (you know the white coat, push the button) I almost laughed thinking it was a joke. Title: Special Forces Team Director for Geek Squad. A title meant to get one to comply with authority. Ross nicely asked what was going on and so I go through the whole story again for the 100th time. He asked how the TV had sentimential value. I have to go through explaining how we came to own the TV and how my husband was killed. Great. Ross says he will have someone out the next morning to repair the TV. The next day it is 10 am, Katrina calls for Cole telling me and I quote "Cole has made the decision to junk out your TV. I need to give you a confirmation number so you can go to the local Best Buy store and pick out a comparible model." I asked why he suddenly without cause made this decision. Katrina rudely said it didn't matter. I asked if I had any other options. Katrina said "Cole has taken away all other options." Wow. Powerful almighty Cole has removed my options under a warranty I purchased because he is angry because he got caught lying about being a Samsung Authorized Service Center. A bit childish and very vendictive.
I go to the local store and of course they try to give you a list of every model that doesn't come close to your model. They are listing the models that are on the Samsung website on sale. I go home do my research and make a choice. I call before I go back to the store to order my choice and I am told great. I get there and they have printed out paperwork on a different model because the model I wanted is not in stock, they can't order it, and it isn't in the warehouse. It is available on Best Buy.com but I have to give them my TV first before they can place the order on Best Buy.com. Why would I do such a stupid thing? To date, I have yet to get one honest answer from Best Buy or Geek Squad. The only consistency has been their dishonesty. This TV is proof of their fraud. Don't think so. Not giving them this TV first.
Maybe I'm old fashioned or maybe I just don't belong in this time. I found myself thinking of the CEO,Founder of Best Buy who must have at one time had a dream of what he wanted his company to become and reflect. Does it bother him what they do, how it reflects on his name, on what he built? I recall a time when how you conducted your business reflected on your name, your reputation, your honor, and it mattered. Yes, it is only TV. I happen to have a fond memory attached to it of my husband's child like smile trying to sway me to give in and buy it. More than anything I know when people speak my husband's name, it is with honor knowing he was an honest man. Mr. CEO, Founder of Best Buy what have they done to your name? As of today, regardless of whether you were aware or not you are responsible for the actions of those employed by the company you created. It is they who have dishonored your name, your business, and made both untrustworthy.  A person's legacy is not in how rich they were in life but in how they treated others in life. Mr. CEO Founder, what will be your legacy? No doubt people will say you were rich but more importantly will they say that you were an honest man who treated people fairly. Time to make a decision. Death comes when we least expect it and leaves little time to make things right. I of all people know. Clear your name if you care about it or do nothing and your legacy will be that of a dishonorable, dishonest man.

    Hello celticmyth,
It's never precisely fair to compare one person's loss to another's, but when I lost my Dad several years ago, everything that I had of his was suddenly imbued with an almost overpowering sense of his person. It seemed that I could bear the loss of him just a little better by being close to those objects that he had shared with me, that he had once held dear. I think I might have a touch of understanding for your feelings about your TV and how you see your husband's smile reflected in it. I'm very, deeply sorry for your loss.
While I can't speak to all of the issues surrounding Geek Squad's attempts to repair your TV, it's clear from your description that in each case the results were unsatisfactory. It is ever our goal to keep our commitments: if you were promised that the part would be new, it should have been. When asked about Geek Squad technician's qualifications to complete the repairs, your query should have been met with a straightforward answer. I apologize for your having to cope with situations where you felt that there was obfuscation at the very least.
It is also the goal of Geek Squad to complete repairs successfully as quickly as possible so that you do not have to be without the use of your TV for overly long. When this can't be achieved, we may make the decision to authorize the replacement of the TV under the terms of Geek Squad Protection. In most cases, this is greeted with delight by customers who have been in repair limbo for a while. In a case such as yours, where the TV represents a joyful memory, this simple replacement authorization can become a much more complex proposition. It is not our intent to create ill will or hurt, but to ensure that you have a working TV. It is regrettable if this action on our part added more frustration to an already aggravating process.
In order for your local Best Buy to proceed with the replacement of your original TV, it will have to be surrendered to us. Based on the notes recorded from your telephone conversations with us and what you've said above, the store will be able to assist with ordering the TV you've selected by providing a store credit in exchange for the TV. Alas, the credit cannot be provided before we accept possession of the TV, in the same way that we do not provide a refund for an item without first accepting the returned product from you.
I encourage you to continue to work with your local Best Buy store representatives toward the replacement of your TV. It is my hope that your selection will give you many years of enjoyment and remain a reminder of a treasured moment with your husband.
I'm very grateful that you shared your experience with me.
    Sincerely,
    John|Social Media Specialist | Best Buy® Corporate

  • Verizon answer me this why cant any customer service tell the truth?

we signed up dec. 6 th . since then its been one lie after another . 3 lines one bad port and one defective phone later and NO ONE stands behind any one . they say one thing and then another rep says " I don't know why they told you that because that is not true ". so getting rid of a junk phone under this contract has deemed relentless and exhausting unless you want to shell out more money for another phone. trade in for different phone seems impossible with out them getting more money in fees and charges for new phone. the phone was crap when I purchased it and now I have to shell out more money because NOTHING IS FREE ! and porting numbers is the worse. 37 days to port one number. that is unheard of in this day in age of technology. 32 days into a contract for 2 years is going to be a nightmare !! worst customer service experience EVER !! Cant wait to see what the 23 months brings.

        jhesser,
Oh goodness, we definitely don't want you to feel this way at all, especially after just joining us. I want to ensure we are on the same page, what's the make and model of the device you are experiencing issues with? Did you port in a wireless number or a landline number? Please share details to further assist you.

  • Question about SAP + SLES10 + vSphere and the truth about memory

    Hi,
we are using vSphere and SLES 10 for a SolutionManager 7.0 on MaxDB 7.6.
The system is configured with 2 GB RAM in the VM. The database is configured to use 125000 pages as cache (100000 KB).
Yes, I know the system is configured very small for this usage, but it is a demo system...
But the system is really slow. I can't figure out whats the problem.
The RAM is configured with 2 GB in the VM a "free" in linux shows me that there is 500 MB used for file system chache
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
    Mem:       2076908    2002704      74204          0      28936     578212
    -/+ buffers/cache:    1395556     681352
    Swap:      6185016    3037744    3147272
so this shoud be ok, for me it is close to the limit...
But VMware infrastruture client shows me, that there are only 300 MB of the 2GB is used ... but the database should use 1 GB and SAP should use some RAM , too.
So who tells the truth? Where does the RAM goes to if it is not used in VMware? Could this be the performance problem?
An other problem is, that the show dev_io of the database shows me very slow access to the files ...
    i.e.
    I/O via Device Processes:
UNIX Devspace                                                Read    avg_read      Write  avg_write
tid name                                                           count       time            count       time
    28596 /sapdata/SYS/sapdata/DISKD01       6532     0.0294        101     0.2077
But VMWare shows that there is nearly no usage of DISK ... average is shown as 150 KBps...
So again, who tells the truth?
What else could be the problem?
    Thank you.
    Best regards
    Christian

    > I know 2 GB is less, but the system is still 32 bit Linux, so 6 GB is "impossible".
Why that? The 32bit limit is a per process limit, not a limit for the amount of total supported memory.
    > During the long weekend the system is switched to an other VMServer I am going to request more RAM. What a pitty that 32 bit does not support more than 3 GB....
I don't know who told you that but it's wrong
    > But there is still the question whats correct? The linux variant of free or the VMware infrastructure client monitoring the RAM?
    > What could slow down the Database IO performance?
    > USE_OPEN_DIRECT we are already using ...
Are you sure it's the I/O peformance? A couple of questions arise then:
    - What filesystem is underneath?
    - How are your data files distributed?
    - What are your I/O times for a single I/O (you can switch that on using DB50 - TAsk manager - and press on the "clock", the time will then be displayed in the database analyzer.
If you use VMWare on a recent processor you can also switch nicely to a 64bit Linux.

  • I can tell the differnce when listening to "One More Time" by Daft Punk...

...The 356kb version when compared to a 128kb version I had. The electronic sounds sound a lot more crisper then on the other one...not to mention it doesn't make a fuzzy sound when I turn it up high on the iPod...but then again, like I said in another thread, I also compared "Smile" by Lily Allen and they sounded very much the same. I'm also using noise-cancelling headphones and a brand new audio card so it should be easy to hear the difference when played...to tell you the truth, it's better on a few songs but sound very much the same on other songs...it depends on what the song is and what type of audio equipment you have.
      Windows XP

If the errors are consistent across OS (ie LiveCD, Windows?)  then your motherboard is most likely on it's way out and needs replacing
You could try removing the motherboard cell battery and doing the "classic capacitor flush" again. Leaving the battery out for a period of time generally has the same effect and in "classic" IT style fixes numerous woes... have you tried a different cable?
If, after replacing the battery, the problem has disappeared I would still treat the hardware as suspect and have it replaced as soon as possible. These sorts of brain farts typically reappear sooner rather than later

  • I need the truth

So tell me ppl. Are there problems with the MBA batteries?
I am looking to purchase one here in the next week but am very concerned about the batteries...
If there is in fact a problem i am just going to get a blackbook.
but i want the MBA lol

I did my battery calibration carefully day before yesterday. I used the system log to time my breaks besides using a clock. Actual time using MBA on battery (not including sleep time) was just short of 5 hours from removal of AC to computer autosleep for lack of battery power, that was past the first notice of low battery and past the second notice of low battery to s l e e p. Six and one half hour later I woke and woke the MBA after I attached it to AC per calibration directions. It woke from the hibernated state and worked upon getting everything up to speed. Six hours later, while in use, it was completely recharged to 100%.
The truth is that most batteries are alright and most settings are alright and, troubleair, you need to visit your local apple retail store because your fourteen days began when you got your computer, not when you ordered it as far as defects are concerned. If you ordered CTO, then you have no return period but you are covered under warranty which would replace a defective machine or battery. CTOs have no option for return.
Configure to Order has no option for return or exchange = CTO. Standard Configurations are no options just the standard config of MBA 1.6 80 GB HHD and the other is MBA 1.8 64GB SSD, these are orders with no extra software and no extra hardware, just the two basic configs.

  • TS1702 Hi, I bought The Truth About Love album on itunes as a complete my album from my Iphone4S.  I can see the name of the album as a purchase on my Mac Notebook 2004, however I am not unable to add the music to my itouch and is doesn't show up in music

    Hi,
I bought the Truth About Love/Pink's album on itunes as a complete my album purchase as I had bought a song from the album previously. I bought it via my Iphone 4S.  When I turn on itunes on my Mac Notebook 2004 (IOS X 10.4.11) I can see the album as a purchase but it is not listed in my library music nor can I add it to my Itouch 2nd generation.  Do you know why?  I can access the songs on my iphone but nowhere else.

They will only be on your computer's iTunes if you put them there. If you are in a country where you can re-download music then they should show under the Purchased Link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes. If they don't show there then you can connect your phone to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over.

I tried using the wireless connection, and also the cable, but none worked. Any idea of what could be happening?

What are you setting it up as.. join wireless network .. the very worst setup, it will disappear.. reboot the whole network in order modem. router TC.. clients and it will likely reappear.
Tell us what network setup you are using..
If you setup with cable to a computer completely isolated from the network with TC also isolated.. finish the setup of everything you want. .before update.. then plug it into the network. .then restart everything in correct order.. it will work most of the time.

  • "Volume not found" I have 3 iphoto_libraries stored in a external disk, while the actual files are in other external disk. Ive moved together iphotolibraries and files but: HOW CAN I TELL THE LIBRARIES WHERE TO FIND THEM NOW?

I have three iphoto_libraries stored in a external disk PASSPORT (one for each trip imovie Im making -Ive managed this way the libraries so to not confuse the trips) while the actual files are in OTHER external disk LACIE. And everything was fine: imovie find each library, could work with it, or iphoto could edit the files.
But one day everything crashed at the same time: i opened iphoto to find 3 different scenarios:
    1) iphoto_library GREECE was there, but not the albums i prepared. no events. when double click in any of them: "Volume not found"
    2) iphoto_library ITALY was there, and the albums i prepared too, but empty.
in both cases I can only see the photos in 'photos'  because 'events'  shows some events with photo preview and some with no preview, just some kind of preset clipart palm tree, but if i enter the event, photos are there but again: when double click in any item: "Volume not found"
    3)  iphoto_library ISRAEL was there, the albums too, when double click in any of them: all OK
The 3 libraries was managed the same way. Meaning: Ive imported photos to iphoto from external disk LACIE in a iphotolibrary stored in another external disk PASSPORT. Also: I don't have unchecked the option "copy to file" or something like that. photos where moved, not copied. Also i have all the movie_libraries in the PASSPORT as well. What happened??
Solution? Nothing yet. Ive moved now all the photo folders from LACIE together in PASSPORT with the iphotolibraries but problem persist:
HOW CAN I TELL THE LIBRARIES WHERE TO LOOK FOR THE VOLUMES NOW?
"Volumes" are the original files aren't them?
Please help. this is so annoying to try and find in the forum, to tricky to explain
    I have a Macbook pro retina Yosemite 10.10.1 / iphoto 9.6 (910-29)/ iMovie 10.0.6
    THANK YOU
    Vicky

The 3 libraries was managed the same way. Meaning: Ive imported photos to iphoto from external disk LACIE in a iphotolibrary stored in another external disk PASSPORT.
This is not clear, especially when you say
I don't have unchecked the option "copy to file" or something like that. photos where moved, not copied.
Especially as the message you're getting is typical of a library where the ' option "copy to file" or something like that' is unchecked.
    So it's a simple question:
Are you these Managed or Referenced Libraries?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Can I tell the file size of my .folio without an iPad?

I've been searching everywhere for this answer, but alas, it has escaped me. How can I tell the file size of my .folio? I'm sure this is really simple. I'd like to be able to see the final file size of my folio without an iPad.

I think if you log into acrobat.com, you should see your folio there, too.
You see the article sizes and may be able to add them together.
Be catuous, editing your folio through acrobat.com might break it.

  • HH3 Type A can't tell the time

Currently on HH3 number five, this one is Type A and has been running for about a week with reasonably consistent speeds until this morning when it had dropped again when I tried to restart it nothing happened.  Tried switching on/off still nothing just the orange power light.  Hit the reset button which woke it up.  Checked the settings and it was showing the date as 01.01.03 and time at 01.00.  Set it to take date/time from the internet but it shows the time one hour slow.
My question in short is why can't the thing tell the time?????????????????????

  • In ical, how can you tell the difference between a meeting invite and email?

When you send a meeting invite in ical, does the recipient receive a different icon in their inbox to differentiate from an email?

For service stock you can't tell the difference between a new iPad and a refurbished one. Both will come in a plain brown box with the same pattern in model numbers. If you mean between a refurbished one and one new at retail, then other than the obvious difference in packaging, I've read that the model number on refurbished units starts with the letter "F", though I've not confirmed that.

  • How can I tell the device is connected to itunes 12?

how can I tell the device is connected to itunes 12?  I have Windows 8.  I hear that the device is connected, but don't see the device to manage.  Only thing that happens is on the phone it says Trust the computer..   I say Trust and nothing happens.

in ituens at the top where you see the small icons for Music, Movies, TV etc when your device is connected you will see a small icon representing your phone or ipad etc popup click that and it will show you the usual interface for backup and syncing.
if that doesnt happen, like it didint for me initially, you should close itunes fully via task manager if you know how to do this and start it again with the device unplugged then plug it in after itunes has finished loading.
Worst case scenario you nee to resatrt
