Terminal and Widget Problems

I am running into an unusual problem with my computer. I used Terminal to allow my widgets to go to the desktop (witch did not work), but when I typed in the command it added the plus and arrow symbol (the same as when you go to widgets on your mac) to my main desktop. How do I fix this?
file://localhost/Users/student/Desktop/Screen%20Shot%202013-05-17%20at%201.10.18 %20PM.TIF

Fixed this issue by installing XQuartz.  After this the DISPLAY environment variable is set to a value.
plb$ env | grep DIS
DISPLAY=/tmp/launch-fMUlob/org.macosforge.xquartz:0
plb$ ssh -Y oracle@grid1vm1
oracle@grid1vm1's password:
Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.
Last login: Wed Aug  8 17:58:09 2012 from 10.187.89.245
[oracle@grid1vm1 ~]$ env | grep DIS
DISPLAY=localhost:11.0
[oracle@grid1vm1 ~]$ xclock
XQuartz starts on the Mac and xclock now appears as it should in my Mac display.

    Abdussalam.A,
you mentioned that Terminal does not work at all for your MacBook Pro. What currently happens when you run Terminal? In what way does it not work?

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that isn't fully working. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • How do I start Firefox 4 from KMenu when I downloaded and installed Firefox4.0.tar.bz2 (only launches from terminal), and 'apt-get' installs Firefox 3.6.15 even though I tried to "--purge" it from Linux?

I downloaded and installed Firefox 4 RC using tar.bz2 so that I could still use Firefox 3.6.15 as per normal, having to start Firefox 4 using the terminal which worked great (except for many videos on different websites). When Firefox 4 was released, I suppose I was in a hurry to get it to work normal from my menu, but it kept saying that 3.6.15 was the latest version (I'll be quite embarrassed if it wasn't available for Linux users - I do love Firefox!). I did something silly, like purge Firefox from my operating system (Kubuntu 10.10) and when I reinstalled it was still 3.6.15 (it wasn't really downloading, but unpacking). Am I in too much of a hurry or is there a fix-it? I can use Firefox 4, but only through the terminal and I suspect it is slower than it should be. I would like only one version now.

First, that cannot be an iBook G4 as that machine cannot run Snow Leopard let alone Mountain Lion.  To run Snow Leopard it has to be an Intel processor, not a G4.  What does it show as the Model Identifier in About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Model Identifier?
Second, if you have erased the hard drive there should not be remnants of any prior content.  Even though Disk Warrior is saying nothing is wrong with the hard drive, it sounds as though there are problems.  You may want to consider simply replacing the hard drive so there are no questions about faults.  A good source is OWC, http://www.macsales.com where they also have on-line videos showing how to do the replacement.
Third, you could also try again to restart using the Snow Leopard DVD/CD and use Disk Utility on that install disk to erase again, and do it a couple times, then try to install.  If it continues to refuse, then it sounds as though there is a fault with the hard drive.

The reason that threadjacking is frowned on (as mentioned in the terms use which you can read by clicking the link to the right on this page) is for the most part a practical one:
By starting your own thread your problem can get individual attention, focussed on your particular set of circumstances.
By joining somebody else's thread it becomes tricky to answer more than one question at the same time, and can lead to confusion for both parties.
So if you don't mind the minor inconvenience, please start your own thread (in the correct forum) so we can get to grips with your particular problem!

  • System Admin and Admin Problem...

Can any one tells me the different between system admin and admin?
It seems like system admin is messing up my file permissions, and it seems like system admin has more control than the admin (me)...
I had this experience today: everytime when I create a folder, the permission's gone under "system", I was not able to have any folder action nor create a new folder under it.
I search the forum with solutions and I think I've fixed it and it works fine now, but the permission is still not under my account name; it goes under "root" (system Admin).
Any one has a solution for this?
And how can I delete the system admin account?
    Thanks,
    Arnold

I input dscacheutil -q user in terminal, and I got this:
Would it help to solve my problem? :P I'm wondering if anyone has the same problem too?

  • SQL Loader error on Fields terminated and optionally enclosed

When you have fields terminated and optionally enclosed, you should be able to have the enclosure characters within the data by doubling them.
So if I have fields terminated by '|' optionally enclosed by '"' and my data has a double quote in it, I can get SQL Loader to take it by replacing the double quote with two double quotes.
But this doesn't always work. For some reason the following string gets the error "no terminator found after TERMINATED and ENCLOSED field"
    |"TRO2 ldj?=)(/&%ç*""aàéè_:;!àèé,jpdjbdbd"|
Apparently having the double quote immediately after an asterisk makes SQL Loader not see the second double quote. If I edit it and remove the two double quotes it loads OK. Also if I change the string to
    |"TRO2 ldj?=)(/&%ç*aà""éè_:;!àèé,jpdjbdbd"|
Moving the double quote away from the asterisk it loads OK.
    Anybody encounter this problem before?

    Oracle version is 11.1.0.7.0
    OS is Windows 6.1.7601
I can't remove the "optionally enclosed by" clause because we're getting the data from another system. Fortunately this is test data and this particular combination of characters is unlikely to occur in production data.

  • File permission and ownership problem

I am trying to resolve some file permission and ownership problems that are left over from using Migration Assistant to set up my iMac from an older iMac. In a terminal session when I use the ls -l command I'm getting a file/directory owner of 504. Sometimes the group is admin and sometimes the group is also 504. I think this is because the owner of the file on the old computer is not present in the new one but I want to be sure before I just change the owner and group.

The following should give you an indication->
    id -un 504
    or you could try->
dscl . list /Users UniqueID | grep 504  && echo "User exists" || echo "User does not exist"

  • SSL connection works through terminal and Firefox only

I have issue with SSL connection.
It works through terminal and Firefox only. Everything else requiring SSL is down including App Store. I can't fix the problem by updating software, nor reinstalling as softwareupdate and hdiutil mount patch you via SSL at the end.
No apparent reason.... It all worked fine last night.
Does anyone know what is it and how to fix it?
    Thanks.

    MurphyCooper,
this might be worth a shot: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Has this made any difference?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Contact AppleCare (or Apple ID Support), upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
I'm not exactly sure what procedures are in place for such events but Apple can assist in such cases, but it may take a while and you may need to provide proof of purchase and other corporate documents.
For future reference your best tactic might be to use Apple Configurator to set up all your companies devices. You can set the password for 'Find my Phone' to be identical for all your devices, whilst allowing the user to use their own password for the remainder of the iCloud services.

  • 10.5.6 and Terminal and X11

Installed 10.5.6 today and found a few quirks, especially with Terminal and X11. Anyone else run into this yet?
    1. Terminal default login shell is now tcsh instead of bash. Need to go to preferences and select /bin/bash.
    2. I am having problems launching anything that uses X11. Seems that something is now in a protected directory. If I launch X-based apps as the superuser via sudo, then everything runs. What's the fix to this?
    3. I had my bibtex library (for LaTeX publications) in $home/Library/BibDesk. However, $home/Library is now a protected directory and I can't seem to changed the permissions. What is the solution?

    eric.paterson wrote:
Thanks for the suggestion on reposting in the Unix forum.
Also, no offense, but sudo stands for "super user do," also the manpage says,
Actually su stands for switch user, which defaults to the root user if no other user is given. Otherwise su would be something like
    su nero
to allow any user to take over the account nero.
    %man sudo
sudo allows a permitted user to execute a command as the superuser or another user.....
Yes but there are things that cannot be done via sudo, but only by actually logging in as su.
For example, I recently discovered that I can read a DVD-RAM that has the main folder tagged as nobody for permissions. I could not open it with sudo, but had no problem as su.
Another time I could not delete a file using sudo but su allowed me to do so.
The differences are probably very small and not well documented, but if you do enough playing around in the terminal, you will eventually hit something that requires su, and sudo will not work.

  • [SOLVED] Strange behaviour of gnome-terminal and xterm

    Hello,
I've been on Archlinux for 2 days, and I have a strange problem with gnome-terminal and xterm. When I write a too long command on a line, the text continues from the beginning of this line erasing the text, instead of going to a new line. Do you have any idea of how to fix that?
    Thanks a lot!

Seems to be in a fresh install, too. I didn't change any setting of bash and no PS1.
I still can't reproduce it... I hate those errors. :-(
    Edit:
    Fixed by using zsh now.

  • 10.4.4 widget problems

Since installing 10.4.4, most of my widgets are crashing when I go to dashboard. I thought it might be network-related because Weather, SMS, GoogleMaps all crashed. But some non-network widgets crash too (TileGame, UnitConverter--or are those accessing the internet?). Dictionary, Stickies and Calendar seem to work fine.
In the past I've had font-related widget and AppleApp problems--anybody know what fonts are required for widgets (the Apple ones at least)? But this may be totally unrelated...
Have done the permissions thing, deleted the relevant prefs files, and tried moving the widget files to a single location (HD/Library/Widgets or HD/Users/[user]/Library/Widgets, tried both). All to no avail.
Have also been experiencing slightly more frequent App crashes since the update, but nothing systematic enough to be of any help here...
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I downloaded the stand-alone 10.4.4 updater, ran it (without uninstalling the one that came via Software Update) and evrything seems to be working now. It seems I have successfully upgraded from 10.4.4 to 10.4.4.
    Fingers crossed...
