Terminal commands with automator and Safari

Hey guys, I'm trying to create an automator that will open safari, enable private browsing, go to my site, and log myself in. The problem is I need a terminal command line that will ensure private browsing is enabled. Any tips / help is appreciated. Thanks

So I am not really used to scripts and the script language nor in automator, I only made a few apps with automator like resize picture and show/hide hidden files.
Now I am about to make an app which cleans my OS, I would like to run all these commands with one click, rather then copy pasting them into terminal one- by-one.
    sudo rm -rf /private/var/log/*
    sudo rm -rf /private/var/folders/
    cd /private/var/tmp/; rm -rf TM*
    cd ~/Library/Caches/; rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/*
this would clean my mac caches and logs, like i would run it every week as im a power user.
Please someone tell me how to put all these into automator and try to be detailed. Thanks for the support!

Thanks for both positive, useful and sarcastic responses. The main reason is why I want to do this is becasuse I use different browsers, and all the cache they make is 2-3GB/day, as I use the web the most.
I see the reason why NOT TO clear it and I do understand it, but after a week it is 10-15GB for me.
And no, there isnt anyone else using my Mac, and the logs which I would nuke at every start and only keep the last and updated logs. I only need the startup and boot log.
@barney-15E yes it would be fun though
So then, I wont do anythings, as it cannot be done the way I wanted. I'll keep using Onyx.

  • Terminal Command with Automator

ok i want to use the automator to run a script so that i can view my hidden files without going through the terminal
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    KILLALL Finder
these are the command but i cant get automator to run them please help

    Hi,
What do you mean when you say you can't get Automator to run them? I created a workflow with a Run Shell Script action, put the 2 lines in the body of the action, and it seemed to work just fine.

  • Creating/running Terminal command with Automator

I am using Parallels Desktop on my iMac. Occasionally after I shutdown Parallels Desktop/Windows the ram it used is not released back, for example, depending on what I'm running in Parallels Desktop I can use upto around 16GB or ram. Ocassionally when I shutdown Windows and in doing that Parallels Desktop too, this ram level does not go back down. I find that going into Terminal and entering the purge command puts the ram level down to what it was before I loaded up Parallels Desktop.
I was wondering if its possible to use Automator to create a shortcut that I could then either place on my Desktop or Dock and when needed I could just double click on it and it would then load Terminal and then the purge command?
Or is there another way that I could automate the purge command?

I managed to work it out for myself.
    I done the following:
In Automator I chose Application/Run Shell Script. In the box that appeared in the right side I entered purge. I then saved it to my desired location and I then dragged it onto the Dock for easy access.

  • Help with Automator and Safari

I am an automator newbie and need some help. What I am trying to do is automate a rather time consuming task. I have 219 bookmarks in Safari for books at amazon.com. What I would like to do is use Automator to take the title of each book and the ISBN of each book of the bookmarked page and then paste it into an excel database. Is this possible? If I could I would like to take it one step further. What I would really like to do is take the title of each book, the ISBN, and post them into a text file (or Excel Database) and then check to see if each title is available at my local borders store and note that in the file as well. Is this possible?
    Thanks
    Tim

    Hi
Easiest way is to click/drag the image to your desktop, where it is automatically saved in its original file format (e.g. jpeg, gif etc.). From there you can move the file to a designated location via your Finder.
The other path is to right click or control key/click on an image, opening the contextual menu. There, you have a choice to directly download the image to your designated Safari download location (Safari preferences>General), or you can hold down the "option" key, which changes the contextual menu command from "save image to Safari download" to "save image as". Here, you can navigate to your location of choice.
Also, in the contextual menu, you can download the image directly in your iPhoto library.
So there's a lot of ways at your disposal.

  • Problems with Mail and Safari

    Hi,
I'm running OS 10.11 and am having some consistent problems with Mail and Safari on my MacPro Dual 2.66. Here they are:
Sometimes, for no apparent reason, selecting these applications from the dock no longer opens the application (or a new window if already opened), but causes them to be revealed in the finder.
In Safari, when this problem occurs, another symptom seems to be that new windows will ONLY open in a new tab, even though I have preferences set to open links in a new window. If I click on a bookmark within a folder in the bookmark toolbar, Safari will open ALL the bookmarks in the folder in new tabs!!
In Mail, when I open my Inbox, clicking on various messages will highlight (in blue) ALL the messages I'm clicking on, instead of simply displaying the highlighted message in the reader.
The only way to get things back to normal is to reboot my machine, which is getting to be a total drag, especially since this seems to happen fairly often.
One other thing that may be related- if my screen saver is running, and I move the mouse to go to an active screen, the computer will "freeze." It stays like this indefinitely- I figured out that if I press the button on the machine itself it will go to sleep, and I can wake it up and then everything is fine, but I don't understand what's going on.
I have tried using Disk Utility and Disk Warrior, and have used OnyX to clean out my system cache and aall sorts of other stuff, but to no avail.
Is anybody else experiencing any of this? I'm starting to get really frustrated. Thanks for any advice.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

    Scott,
I had posted earlier that I had Flash payer problems and then QuickTime and PDF preview problems too, on my Intel PowerMac. I could not figure out what the problem was, because fixing permissions and moving plugins did not work. Console indicated that the Quicktime components were not found, with the problem in a webkit pref file somewhere (nil field value). Anyway, I bailed and reinstalled Leopard from a 10.5.0 DVD, and then updated using the combo updater to 10.5.3. Everything worked. Then, after the 'Java for Mac OSX 10.5 Update 1', it all broke again. This time, repairing permissions resulted in:
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Home/lib/jvm.cfg", should be 0, user is 95.
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Libraries/classlist" , should be 0, user is 95.
Now it all works again. This is obviously a flaw with the Java update, and also somehow Disk Utility did not find it earlier. Anyway, take a look at reverting the Java update, or manually changing user for those files (I suppose user 0 is root, but maybe it is nobody).
    Obscure....

We have an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with maximum of 4G bytes of SDRAM, with OX X 10.9.4 Mavericks.  It is routinely locking-up with the rainbow wheel.  Especially with iTunes and Safari.
I'm wondering it it that Mavericks simply uses more RA that the machine allows when also running application, but I don't see the RAM is being maxed out per se' when in Activity Monitor either.  I've also ran the Disk Utility and have run scans wit Sophos, looking for malware, but have found no issues.
Any ideas?  Any better Malware/Spyware applications?
    Help!

  • Since I'm having probs with ios6 and Safari, would the Atomic browser be worth a try?

Since i'm having probs with ios6 and Safari (Autofill and loss of Wi Fi), would the Atomic browser be worth a try?  trouble is, I'm a bit of a 'newbie' when it comes to the 'clever' stuff, so need a bit of expert advice here.

I use the Atomic browser for some things. I feel it's main advantage is that you can set the type of browser that Atomic reports. I set mine to Internet Explorer and that allows me to visit regular websites without being redirected to a tablet version. Its free so why not download it and give it a try. If you find it wanting just delete it.

I just cannot search - it won't work.

  • Problems with Chrome and Safari

About one week ago, I started having some issues with my mid-2012 MBP. After troubleshooting various items, I both reinstalled OSX and then erased the hard drive and reinstalled OSX. As far as I can tell, most of the minor issues were taken care of.
    Two issues persist.
    1. The thumbnail photos that accompany status updates in my Facebook News Feed are not showing up. It's either blank, or a broken photo symbol. This is happening intermittently in both Chrome and Safari. I should add, since the latest install of OSX, Chrome and Adobe Flash have been the only things I have downloaded. And the issue remained in Safari after the fresh install and before downloading Chrome, so I know this issue isn't Chrome related. (It also happens with the Test user profile I have in which there are no other programs.)
    2. Along with (1), both Chrome and Safari have been partially or fully freezing. Again, this is intermittently. When the browsers freeze up, the Activity Monitor shows both Chrome and Safari as using over 100% of the CPU. It does not resolve itself in Chrome and requries a force quit. Safari has been resolving itself.
Like I said, I have already erased the hard drive and reinstalled OSX. I have also ran the Hardware Test and it found nothing; and my S.M.A.R.T. status is Verified. I have also reset the PRAM and resent the SMC.
Additionally, the newly downloaded Chrome is running as it is when downloaded from the site. That is, no extra plug-ins or extensions.
Anyone have any ideas about what the issues could be?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Trying to automate a Terminal command with a password

    Hi,
I'm a long time Mac user, but not a Terminal expert.
I've come upon a simple hack that enables me to run two instances of Skype simultaneously. This enables me to use it with two different user names.
The idea is to create another user on the computer and run the other Skype like this:
    sudo -u user "/Applications/Skype.app/Contents/MacOS/Skype"
In order to simplify this for daily use, I'd like to create a small applet which runs this terminal command.
Trying to do so with Automator's +Run Shell Script+ fails with an execution error, probably due to the fact that this sudo command requires an admin password.
Is there any way to accomplish this?
    Thanks

hmm... I'm afraid that didn't do the trick. It now opens the Terminal window and launches Skype with the message "another copy of Skype is already running".
Maybe I should add another step to workflow instead?
Thanks again, I really appreciate your help.

  • Terminal command to lock and unlock the dock?

    Hello,
I manage hundreds of iMacs running Yosemite at a school site.  I use parental controls with the lock dock feature turned on.  I would like to periodically unlock the dock to customize it with new icons, but have not found a terminal command that works, or a streamlined process that is time efficient.
So far I have been individually unlocking the dock in parent controls on each machine, restarting, editing the dock, then re-locking it parental controls, then restarting.  This takes 5-10 minutes per machine).
I also tried this command but it didn't work.
    defaults write com.apple.dock contents-immutable -bool true; killall Dock;
I also tried cloning the parental controls with an exported plist file to all the machines using ARD, which works for all the parental control settings EXCEPT for the lock dock feature.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Crystal

Sorry this is probably too late for you, but it may help others seeking this answer, I just had this problem [Mac OS x Yosemite 10.10.2] and found that the following worked for me:
    1. Use Terminal to LOCK the Dock by C&P or typing in:
defaults write com.apple.dock contents-immutable -bool true
Then use your preferred method to Log-Out [e.g. Key Combo ⇧⌘Q or  [Top Left Menu] then select Log Out “name”]
    and then Log-In again.
    2. Use Terminal to UNLOCK the Dock by C&P or typing in:
defaults write com.apple.dock contents-immutable -bool false
Then use your preferred method to Log-Out [e.g. Key Combo ⇧⌘Q or  [Top Left Menu] then select Log Out “name”]
    and then Log-In again.
NB. You will be solely responsible for your actions making changes to the Operating System.

  • Problems with iChat and Safari

Yesterday I got to work and started up my beloved iMac G5, but iChat would not open and it gives me the following note: The application iChat quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
I have tried to reopen and sent several reports to Apple but nothing has helped so far. It is also doing this with my Toast 7 and Safari will unexpectedly quit in the middle of an action.
Has any one else experienced this kind of problem? I'm running Tiger as an operating system and I'm the only one at the office that is having this problem. And my system at home, which is the same, if fine as well. I ran Disk Utility, which found a preference problem that it said it fixed. I haven't gone further yet, since I still need to actually USE my computer during work hours, but if anyone has an idea, I would greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks!

Find the program Pacifist online. Run it with your Tiger DVD in the machine (don't boot from it) and re-install iChat.
    Let me know!

  • Every few days, my iPad stops working properly with Messages and Safari.

I am using a 32 GB iPad mini 2 on iOS 8.1.2. Several times recently, without any warning, I have lost the use of Messages and Safari has been having troubles with certificates. I try to send an iMessage and I get the "Message Send Failure" error after a few seconds. I have tried, in the past, doing things like signing out of iMessage and iCloud. When trying to relogin, all I get is a "An error occurred during activation" or "Could not sign in" message. Here is a screenshot of the error message:
In Safari, the problem seems to lie with Trusted Websites. On many occasions after the problem (as a whole) occurs, I get an alert questioning the authenticity of a page I am visiting. This tends to happens with major websites that Safari has never had problems with before.
I have tried many solutions to fix this problem. So far, it has happened three times (the most recent going on while I'm typing this), and the two times where it seemed to be resolved, the resolutions were completely different. The first time it happened, I signed out of iCloud, did a hard reset, and finally (and this is what temporarily fixed the issue), I chose "Forget This Network" for the Wi-Fi network I was using in network settings. after signing back in, everything worked how it should.
The problem showed up again a week or so later and, after all of the things listed above failing, I restored from my iCloud backup. I had experienced no more problems since until now. I have again lost the ability to use iMessage and Safari has strange problems regarding web certificates.
    Thanks!

This morning, I experienced yet another temporary fix. It was just working. Even though I was signed out of iMessages I started receiving them again. I wonder when it'll happen again...
