Terminal line continuation

Hey wasn't there a UNIX forum around here somewhere?
How do I run a ./configure command telling Terminal to use a line continuation character? For example:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/python-$version \
--enable-frameworkinstall=/usr/local/python-$version/frameworks \
--enable-universalsdk=/ 'MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=10.6 \

I thought the backslash should be a line continuer, but it doesn't work. BTW, I wasted about an hour searching Google for the answer to this question.

Skip it, I figured out one of my parameters is wrong but no error is reported. The backslash character is the line continuer.

System call, line continuation issue

Hello,
I used Java system call on a linux script as below:
Runtime.getRuntime().exec(myScript.bsh);
Where myScript.bsh is a bash script file. While the bash script file was executed, the issue is that some scripts in the file were skipped during exectution when there is a line continuation symbol. e.g.
runCommandLine arg1 \
arg2 \
arg3
The above command in myScript.bsh will not be executed. However, it will be executed successfully if I put the above command in one single line without the use of line continuation.
I would appreciate any insights on how to get the script run with line continuation.

Confirm that you can execute the command directly in a terminal window.
You may have to wrap the call in a shell.

Sun Studio 12 support DOS text (e.g. CR\LF) for line continuation ?

I moved up to Sun Studio 12 hoping that I could solve a age old problem that allows me to share my code via NFS across multiple systems. AIX and GCC Linux precompilers and compilers have not problem with a code like this:

but for Solaris with the Sun Solaris compilers I have always had to copy the tree and convert to UNIX text.
The line continuations are there for z/OS MVS record length limits to avoid having to modify default systems to build on that platform.

Is there some undocumented flag/option I can use to get past this error? I hope so. Otherwise have to go back to coping lots and lots of code around, converting to Unix text as I do it, preserve the date based on the original file and then copy the binaries back to staging afterwards. On AIX and Linux and Windows they can all build in parallel from the SCM export.

Sorry, I don't know of a way around this exact issue.
Studio compilers will ignore the CR in a CR/LF sequence, but the C compiler does not accept what looks like an escaped CR. (The C++ compiler does accept what was intended as an escaped newline sequence.)
Is the CR actually necessary? I thought that on systems using CR/LF as the default newline would accept LF as a newline as well in source code.
If you have a Studio support contract with Oracle, you can file a request for enhancement (RFE) on the C compiler via your support channel to address your problem.

Multi line strings - line continuation chars?

Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is a daft question or not...
I need to put a multiline select statement into a string variable.
ie I would like to put the sql below into a variable.
select bla bla bla bla bla
from bla
where bla
strvar := 'select bla bla bla bla bla
from bla
where bla';
Is there a standard line continuation character that I can put at the end of each line to enable me to put the single quote and the beginning of line 1 and the end of line 3? Or do I need to quote each line front and back and cat them together as separate strings?

How to increase the number of scrollable shell/terminal lines?

Hi guys,
I've just run "pacman -Syu" and got hundreds of error lines. When I tried to scroll up to the first one by pressing "shift-pageup" I noticed, that I could only go back a couple of lines. So apparently my terminal "forgot" the first few lines.
How can I increase the number of "history lines" (no, I do not mean the bash command history) in my terminal? I'm not using any terminal emulator like xterm. I have no GUI installed on that box. It's just the normal virtual console I'm talking about.

Slow Broadband 250K throughput, line continually d...

I joined BT in October 2010, I left Sky because my broadband speed was really good then one month they dropped the speed, no notice or apologies. I joined BT as I thought they would be able to provide a fast, quality and reliable service; this has not been my experience so far.
Summary
Problems since joining in October 2010, 6 months on still not fixed.
Line throughput is configured to 250kbps, Profile is configured to 3776kbps.
Current download speed is 0.12mbps, this is my average download speed.
Line drops every 4-5 days, profile is reconfigured then drops again.
4 failed BT Broadband engineer visits (engineers did not turn up).
Card changed on the switch twice.
If there is anyone from BT who cares about their customers please contact me to try and resolve.

A complex broadband engineer attended my premises on Friday, he spent 2.5 hrs testing and could find nothing wrong with the internal wiring he dsaid I should be able to receive 4.7mb download with no problems. 4 hours after he left and my router threw a wobbly, continually rebooting with the amber and red light on occasions. Surprise, surprise the speed returned to the usual poor speed of 0.12mbps download.
I have run BT Speedtester tonighht and it gets worse 67KBPS download, line profile now configured as 160kbps, see results below.

How do I make a non-closed figure out of lines (continuous, because corners need to line up) of a certain thickness, and then cut it out?

Could you help me with this problem? I suspect it's very simple but I'm a beginner.
I need to create a continuous shape out of lines 15 pixels thick, and then cut it out. I've tried the line tool, using the shift key to add to endpoints, but then the corners do not end up exactly. I've also tried the path key on the pen tool, but this always closes the shape for me, which is not what I want. The shape IS the line.
I've attached a picture of a basic sketch of the shape I'd like to produce. Can any of you give me any advice? Thank you.

Draw a baseline guide to snap the pen tool to where you want the lines to line up If you're using CS6 or later, use the stroke so you can edit the line.

Terminal (Shell) continues to show a folder even if it is deleted/ renamed

Make a folder, let us say "xyz" on desktop and cd to this location on a terminal using 'cd' command.
Now rename that folder to "abc".
Now type 'ls' command on Terminal to see the content of folder "xyz", it still shows.
In addition if you use 'pwd' command, it still shows that you are in directory "xyz"
Worse is that even if you delete the folder "xyz" and empty trash. Even then using 'pwd' command would show your present working directory as "xyz" folder.

All expected behavior.
Make a folder, let us say "xyz" on desktop and cd to this location on a terminal using 'cd' command.

The 'cd' command makes a chdir() system service call, which opens the target directory and stores the open file descriptor in the process.
When you rename the folder, that just changes the directory entry in its parent folder, it does not change the file system inode for the directory nor does it affect already open file descriptors to the directory.
So when you do an 'ls' with no path, the 'ls' command will ask the file system for the '.' (current directory), which the file systems knows to use the current working directory it already has saved in the process.
This is how Unix has worked forever.
In addition if you use 'pwd' command, it still shows that you are in directory "xyz"
'cd' and 'pwd' are bash built-in commands, so bash has cached the last 'cd' path, and when you issue 'pwd', bash just echos the cached path information. It does not verify anything before displaying the path.
If you want to see the real current path, then try using
/bin/pwd
this will do the more complex reverse path reconstruction, which can have some unexpected responses, because of symbolic and hard links that may have been used to navigate down to the current directory location.
Worse is that even if you delete the folder "xyz" and empty trash. Even then using 'pwd' command would show your present working directory as "xyz" folder.
Again, bash is just echoing the cached path that bash last knew about.
Also since the process still has an open file descriptor to the directory open in the process as the current working directory, the file system will defer the actual directory delete until after that file descriptor is closed.
The fact that a file or directory will not be truely deleted if it is still open, allows an application to continue to use a file if it has it open, even when some other process deletes the file. This can be good for the application, but if that was a huge file and you were trying to free up space, you would not see the space returned until after the process that has the file open, closes the file.
You can use the 'lsof' command to find what processes have what files/directories open.

What is the syntax for line coninuation in java.Suppose i am defining a string and it goes to the next line.Without using '+' for appending how do i define this single string.

use concat(String yourString). This will append yourString to the end of your first String.

Can the Terminal add a user(with all options) on a single line?

Thanks Drew!   You have some great thoughts there. Perhaps I should provide a clearer environment of each high school(4). All classrooms have a lock down Windows environment. (There are no Macs any where in any classrooms.) The mini-tower will be the only Mac on each high school campus. we're in Dell country. The desktops are locked in such a way that only the ghosted/installed software on each hard drive works and no other software can be installed. USB sticks can't run any exe, jar, or other executable file. Even the other drives on the network can't run them. This has been setup to prevent students from bringing games into the environment and running them. Only the single classroom in each high school, where Web Tech is taught, has a ftp tool installed. Students cannot bring and use their own laptops either. So there really isn't any stray ftp activity happening. You cannot "ftp" out of the network! And there is only the one Mac available per campus. All this makes it certainly easier to maintain for sure. I am the only user in the school district they let run a personal laptop...mine has Ubuntu (tweaked). My knowledge of Linux has led them to assign this project to me. They are MS based entirely and so is their knowledge base.
I've got to teach the other 4 teachers how to manage the mini-tower. Basically it is this:
     Start and stop Apache2,
     Start and stop vsftp,
     Add ftp users(students will only have directory:           /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default/studentlastname.firstname ) Students will not log on to the min-   tower directly as any normal user would, but only through ftp. (I.E. no /home directory) ,
     Remove/delete students as needed
     (I'll pre-install cgi-bin scripts on these to keep it simpler on the other teachers and myself.)
With this in mind, you can see why a basic script or single command line to install these students would be great! I want to keep it simple to avoid mistakes the teachers might make adding users. Once I understand adding a user (in a terminal) better on a Mac, I may write a script to make it happen for them.
I'd also like to understand removing/deleting a student/user better to insure everything is gone when executed.

Continuous forest line speeds and zooms out or view NOT, but should?

Here is my simple problem which I can not resolve.
I will try to make as a detailed description as possible as I can not figure out which step needs to be corrected.
I would like to create a landscape view as seen by someone on a sleigh ride down the hill.
It starts with a winter forest extreme close up then trees start to move to the left ever so slightly, then speed up down hill and then decelerate and zoom out into a thin line on the horizon while slowing down but still moving to the left of the screen.
The way I decided to create this scene:
I created a nice multi layered file in Illustrator with all the trees overlapping each other. The file is to the maximum artboard width allowed by Illustrator.
I imported this multi layered Illustrator file into After Effects as a Comp with separate layers.
I assigned slight movement in the layers from right to left at various speeds. It gives a dimension to the view as you see one line of trees passing behind another at slightly different speed. This step does not seem to create any problems.
I kept on building the continuous line of trees extending to the right by duplicating imported Illustrator layers until I reached the limit of After Effects Comp canvas size. I believe it was at either 30000 or 60000 pxls. The reason why I need trees so large is because at the beginning of the animation we see them at an extreme close up with all the leaves and branches visible. Then the forest line starts to move to the left and speeds up.
Eventually it speeds up and zooms out at the same time enough to reach its end on the right. By this time the trees are at 50% of the screen size. So I import my tree layers again and match them perfectly at the seam and assign speed and scale so it continues to move past the viewer to the left and zooms out into perspective.
And now everything goes wrong. I perfectly match the points of original tree line and the additional tree line. I see they nicely touch each other in the beginning of the movement and at the end.
However unexpectedly in the middle they start to overlap each other and move slightly faster. For example: Left end of second forest line touches the right end of first forest line at the beginning at 10 sec and touches it the same at the end at 20 sec. However at 15 sec it speeds up and jumps ahead the right end of the first forest line. I tried to fix it by making a key frame at 15 sec and aligning them again. It resulted it two smaller jumps at 12.5sec and 17.5sec. If I keep on keying between the frames the left end of the second forest line continues to make little jumps in between. If I try to adjust the zoom out part it again messes everything up. I did set up my anchor point to the left side of layer.
I thought the problem is with Scale, so I made layer 3D and started to reduce a Z dimension but got the same result. The layers jump on each other and it does not seem as one continuous movement.
POTENTIAL PROBLEM: I did assign Easy Ease, Ease In an Ease Out, so my acceleration and deceleration have nice and smooth motion. However I tried to match the speed and velocity in Key Frame options window (double click Alt on PC opens this dialog window) between the original and the additional forest lines.
I can not make this forest line long enough in a static window as I reached the width limitation of After Efffects canvas size. I need it very large as it starts at extreme close up and then zooms out to a and extreme horizon.
I can not make it a moving line and keep on patching it up as movement does not match and lines start to speed up between the key frames and overlap each other.
I though the problem was the combination of side ways right to left movement and zooming out motion (which I tried both ways: Scale in 2D layer and Z Dimension in 3D Layer) but I can not match even the linear speed of the forest lines from right to left. Perhaps there is a problem with how I am trying to match it.
I will even rebuild the entire project if someone can list steps how to make one continuous line of patched up elements in sync, so they seem as one continuous image line.

Hard to really grasp the situation without a few screen grabs, but some general thoughts:
If all your elements are vector art from Illustrator, scale shouldn't be a factor. Set your Illustrator layers to Continuously Rasterize, and you can move as close as you like to the layers with the camera and they will still be sharp. Thus, you can work at an overall smaller scale, and not go beyond AE's 30000 pixel limitation. Which also means you won't need to frame-match two environments.
It sounds to me like you are overcomplicating the job. Personally, I wouldn't combine camera movements and zooms - the potential that varied focal lengths will upset something is too great. I'd just do everything with camera movement, using the X axis for left-right movement, and the Z axis to move closer or further toward your subjects. After Effects cameras mimic the way real world cameras work, so it's best to approach the job like a real world situation. Build the world, then animate the camera moving within that world.
Remember that you can use Precomposed/Nested compositions to greatly streamline your work. Make a clump of 10 or so trees in one comp, then use that pre comp nested multiple times within your main comp. Don't forget to collapse transformations of the pre comps.

Continuation line character included as a parameter

The new version of SQL*Developer (3.1.07) recognises the dash character as a line continuation character but includes it as a parameter.
Thus in the following

you would expect the second parameter in the script to have the date string '1-JAN-1995'.
However, it has the string value 'First parameter which is a character string'. Similarly, you'd expect the third parameter referenced in the script to have the date value '31-DEC-1995', but instead it is '-'.
Without supplying the '-' line continuation error the command won't run at all - as expected. Therefore the line continuation character is recognised but is included in the parameter list!
It worked correctly in the previous version I used of SQL*Developer.

Generally speaking, however, "JavaScript" is Netscape's implementation of ECMAScript, a scripting language primarily for client-side development for a web browser. "Java" is an entire platform, but typically refers to an object-oriented programming language that is typically compiled to bytecode and run in a virtual machine.
They're not the same thing at all.

Monitoring a terminal server line session

Hello,
I have got around 50 C2811 terminal server bundle running to connect some RS232 manufacturing equipments.
They are configured as suggested on Cisco site.

Terminal lines have no authentication, no exec process, transport input telnet.
I would like to monitor a terminal line session, to display characters transfered between serial port and telnet session.
I am not sure this is possible though.
I tried "monitor traffic line" command, as indicated on this procedure :

But it seems like it requires an exec process, and terminal monitor mode does not recommand to use an exec process.
I also tried some debug commands, or access-list logs.
The only information I can get is the start and end time for each telnet session.
I would like to display all the characters transmitted in these sessions.
Is this possible ?

How to handle long lines in a JAD file?

Hi all,
setting MIDlet permissions in a JAD file easily expands the length of one line so that they need to get wrapped into 2 or more lines. AFAIK JADs actually are manifest files and the manifest file spec says that a line continuation is marked by a line beginning with a single space. I use Ant to create the JAD file and Ant's manifest task does it exactly like this. Example:

Try workarounds like "glueing" permissions into single (long) line or splitting them on commas
