1. Is it possible to make it so the open -e, or open -t command, instead of opening TextEdit, opens a different text editor?
2. Is it possible to open a Windows group, and have JUST 1 of the windows execute an ssh command?

1. Is it possible to make it so the open -e, or open -t command, instead of opening TextEdit, opens a different text editor?
Sure. 'open -t' uses the default text editor application, as defined by LaunchServices. On a standard system this is TextEdit.
If you want to have 'open -t' use a different TextEditor then you need to specify an alternative application as the default text editor.
This is easiest done by selecting a plain text (.txt) file in the Finder and choosing File -> Get Info. In the 'Open with' pane you can choose an alternative text editor and clicking the 'Change All' button will update the LaunchServices database with the specified application as the default.
Now any .txt file you open will launch in this application, whether it's opened in the Finder, or via 'open -t'.

Sorry! i meant I tried all of the links that are on your web page. There are quite a few of them and I watched most of the movies but there aren't any that open on a new window with a link to close it. I thought that happened because I had a pop-up blocker but even after dissabling the blocker and trying opening some of them again they still opened in the same window. I did come accross a couple of links that changed the window and made it do wacky thinks like moving fast left and right and forcing the window to get smaller. Kinda fun but this is not what I had in mind.. lol The rollover javascript is nice but I couldn't find it on the page's source. Is it the part that says "<script language="JavaScript1.2" src=..."? I'm just curious to know which software you used to make the flash movies and how difficult it was. Maya rocks by the way!

Terminal: Window group with commands

Hi, how can I set up a Terminal window group that executes a different command for each window?
What I'm trying to do is restore an array of Terminal instances each pointing to a different location when Terminal opens (so one window should execute "cd x," the next "cd x/src," etc.).
With Tiger I could create a .term file and set an "ExecutionString" (that's how commands were labeled in the .term file format) property for each window, but with SL I'm only able to create one shell command in Preferences|Settings that is executed by all Terminal windows in the group.
So basically, how can I get Terminal to remember a group of windows and their associated file system locations?
I've spent a few hours searching and trying stuff without success. The window groups are stored in Terminal's .plist file so I opened it with Property List Editor and see the Window Groups stored in there but no properties resembling a command for each group.

neenach2002 is basically correct on this one; this post got me pointed in the correct direction. I've gone a little farther to suit my needs (and answer your question directly), so I figured I'd post my results:
First, create a file called "~/window1.bashrc" and place the following in it:
export MYHOME=/Volumes
cd ${MYHOME}
Next, go to Terminal -> Preferences -> Settings. Create a new profile called "MyProfile_Window1" based on one you like, then go to the Shell button, and type "bash --init-file ~/window1.bashrc" (without quotes) into the filed labeled "Run command." Be sure the check box next to it is checked.
Repeat for as many windows as you want, changing your label to Window2, Window3, etc. Be sure you have created the associated ~/window2.bashrc, ~/window3.bashrc, etc also.
You should now be able to open a new window or a new tab via Shell -> New Window -> MyProfile_Window1 or Shell -> New Tab -> MyProfile_Window1, and it should go directly to the directory you want.
Once you have used the menu options above to launch all your windows, save THAT as your window group via Window -> Save windows as group, and under Terminal -> Preferences -> Startup, be sure your newly saved window group is set to launch.

PS: If you would like to use this to attach to multiple servers, you can do the same thing by just launching a shell script that performs an SSH to the appropriate server. To take it one step further, consider using the unix "screen" utility to allow you to instantly reconnect to a dropped setup! I think I'll write a User Tip for this - it's a very handy setup!

Note: A "clean reinstall" was one of the suggestions in [/questions/964132]. It means removing the Firefox application files and then reinstalling Firefox from a fresh download, as explained in the "Reinstall Firefox" step in [[Basic Troubleshooting]]. If that allows you to start Firefox, but if the problem returns after restarting the computer, you should do another "clean reinstall" and then troubleshoot your plugins by disabling all of them, as suggested in the [[Basic Troubleshooting]] article.

These question marks are on your dock? And you can't open applications from your dock?
If so, try this: Open a new finder window and navigate to the Applications folder in your hard disk. The applications in question should still be in there (the Applications folder). So drag each of the application icons that you want to be available on your dock from the Applications folder onto your dock, one by one. Take each of your question mark icons that are on the dock and drag them off the dock to get rid of them. See if that fixes you up.
Now, if your hard disk no longer has an Applications folder in it, or the Applications folder is empty, you are going to have to reinstall OS 10.6 then do a software update to bring you back up to OS 10.6.8. You may be able to just go to the "optional installs" folder on the installer DVD and maybe all the stock applications are there -- I don't remember and I don't have an installer DVD handy to look. That would be way easier than doing a full blown OS reinstall. Also, as I recall, if OS 10.6 was on the computer when you bought it from the store, I think there should be an "extras" DVD that has a handful of applications that could be reinstalled from it, too.

Window autosizing question

Hello! I have a question:
When dialog window opens (action="dialog:someWindow") and size parameters is not set, window size calculates automatically. I have a page, which opens in dialog mode:

When I press button, method actionShowPanelGrid sets act equals 1, panelGrid becomes visible. I should increase page height. How can I calculate it? The better way to solve this problem is call some function, which resizes this window automatically. How can I do this?

When working with javascript in multiple windows like this, it is very easy to get lost.
I think what you missed in accessing your applet was a "document" object.
There are a couple of hints for writing javascript:
1 - you can type javascript into the address bar like so:
javascript:alert(window.opener)
You then follow the path to the object you want as long as you can. Build it up slowly, so you see where the chain breaks.
javascript:alert(window.opener.opener)
javascript:alert(window.opener.opener.document)
javascript:alert(window.opener.opener.document.applets)
javascript:alert(window.opener.opener.document.applets.length)
2 - General design: Don't reference stuff on other pages - call functions on the page only.
Rather than calling window.opener.opener.document.applets[0]. (ie referring to the applet from window 3)
do this
window.opener.opener.saveApplet() (from window 3 call the saveApplet function on window1)
and on the first page have

document.applets[0]. ...
</script>
This provides a sort of interface for other pages to use, so they don't have to refer to details on the page.
If you change the layout of the page, or the name of the applet etc etc, you only have this one place to modify it. It can save you a nightmare in javascript errors later on.

Why do Terminal Window Groups Get 2 Columns Wider Every Launch?

I set up 3 terminal windows of different sizes, place them where I want, and save as a "Window Group." Then I set this Window Group to be used when launching Terminal.
Lion has introduced a bug whereby every time you launch the Terminal app, each window in the Window Group gets wider by 2 columns. It is 100% reproducible and incredibly annoying.
For example, follow these repro steps:
Launch Terminal. Your first window in the group is 140 columns wide, just as you saved it.
Quit Terminal.
Launch Terminal. Your first window in the group is 142 columns wide. The other windows are similarly wider by 2 columns.
Quit Terminal.
Launch Terminal. Your first window in the group is 144 columns wide. Again, the other windows are also wider by 2 columns.
... and so on...
If you select "Window > Open Window Group" and choose the same group, it will open them at the intended sizes. However, this doesn't solve the problem.
Is there a work around to prevent this?

a fix from apple will probably take some time (apple is not fast about bugs they consider minor). in the meantime, you can use something like the following as a workaround. copy the following into a plain-text editor and save it as <whatever>.applescript (somewhere out of the way - it doesn't matter where you save it so long as there are no permissions issues).

You could also save this as a compiled script (.scpt) using script editor; doesn't really matter.
Then, copy the following into a plain-text editor and save it as user.terminal.widthFixer.plist (the name doesn't really matter, so long as it ends in .plist), in the folder ~/Library/LaunchAgents.

<yourname> should be your short user name, obviously, and the path in the ProgramArguments array should point to the script. Log out and log back in, and this script should (in the simplest case) automatically reset the window width.
caveats:
I can't test this (the external disk with my Lion installation died), so I can't guarantee it will work out of the box
depending on whether the increment occurs at startup or shutdown, you may need to set columnCout to 78 instead of 80 to get the right final size
make sure you use a plain-text editor (TextWrangler, TextEdit in plain text mode, or any programmer's editor). using a formatted text editor will mess things up.
if you have a complex setup you may need to reset Window Settings other than the default one. All this means is changing tell property list item defaultWindow to tell property list item "window settings name". adjustments should not be difficult, but post back with details if you need specific instructions.

The right-mouse-click dropdown on links in FF4.00 has swapped the positions of 'open link in new tab' & 'open link in new window'. This is infuriating as I keep opening windows when I want tabs. I want to swap back - how?

Problem opening Bridge CS5 in Windows 7

When I open Bridge CS5 in Windows 7, I get a pop-up window from User Account Contro that asks "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?" The program listed is Bridge. If I say NO, Bridge doesn't open. If I say YES, Bridge opens normally. This question pops up every time I open Bridge but not with any other CS5 applications or any other program. Any suggestions? Thanks,

This is a permissions issue within the OS. Next time you start Bridge right click on the icon and select "run as administrator" and choose yes. Perhaps it will stick that way.

SharePoint Foundation 2010 - Your client does not support opening this list with windows explorer when clicking Open with Explorer

when I tried to open document library in Windows explorer view by click 'Open with Explorer', it popped up “Your client does not support opening list with windows explorer”
OS: Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64
IE: 9.0 32bit
webcient service is runing
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\services\WebClient\Parameters and changed the BasicAuthLevel to 2 instead of 1.
Anybody knows how?

How to open page in new window while handling event on link.

Hi all
I have a requirement where page should be opened in new window when I click on link.My item style is 'link'.Despite of mentioning target frame _blank, I m not able to open it in new window.I m handling event by setting Action Type as fireAction.I hope this might be the reason because of that this happened. Can somebody suggest some solution so that I can open it in new window.

though i am not able to answer, i can get some answer for my question.
How the link item is handled thru the ActionType and event in the Client Action..?
The reason for this question is that we are trying to extend the customer search page in AR - EBSR12. there the search result page has the Account Name as a link and the Action event says viewAccountName and the action type says firePartialAction. I am trying to understand this so that i can add more parameters to the link so that i can use them in the target page of the link..
Any help is appreciated..
