Testing the water on possible Flash Professional and Flash Builder integration

Hey,
I just wanted to throw this out here instead of the bug area to see if I'm off my rocker or I'm on to something.
Basically one of my major pains is that any application design I do, I do it in Flash Pro and I code in FB. Switching back and forth between apps just to press CTRL + ENTER seems like a) a waste of time and b) a waste of system resources.
So what I'm proposing is having FB integrate with FLA files.
When you create your product you have the option to specify a target FLA (or multiple with a build order) so that when you test your project it will actually build your FLAs in order (in the situation that the final SWF requires others) and you're off to the races.
You could also have the currently associated FLA files have a checkbox next to them which could temporally disable them for a build.
If you still need to make design tweaks later on, it's a mater of opening Flash and doing them, but it would be so slick to be able to have FB render the FLA for you in the same app (no more random CTRL+ENTER in FB anymore!)
As far as where it could go. I think it would work the best if it was just a new tab that could be added to the perspective. Would allow drag+drop of FLA files to it, drag+drop ordering and also have the checkboxes to disable any FLAs from the build.
So there we go, does that sound like a decent workflow?
Cheers!

Hi guys,
Have you considered Testing the water on doing your design work in the new Flash Catalyst software http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashcatalyst/ for your skins instead of Flash CS4.
You would be able to export directly in the new FXG format and integrate it directly in your FB4 coding.
There is a tremendous productivity potential gain there.
I am planning to abandon eventually completely Flash CS4 for both design  and coding and substitute it eventually by simultaneously working in FB4(coding) and Flash Catalyst(design) with input symbols directly linked to photoshop and illustrator related files.
For those of you who would like to wet their toes  and initiate  a quick dive, Lynda.com has already released, on june 11,  an 1h40 min course on this subject. Here are the details.
Length: 1 hour
Online Training Library® exclusive!
Flash Catalyst Beta Preview
with: Mordy Golding
Flash Catalyst is a new Adobe application that is currently in beta and available for downloading atlabs.adobe.com, that allows designers to quickly create interactive Flash content and rich internet applications without having to write a single line of code. In Flash Catalyst Beta Preview, Mordy Golding demonstrates a workflow that emphasizes the intuitive nature of the tool, and shows how to achieve results in a short time. Meant to bridge the gap between designers and developers, Flash Catalyst allows the designer to work with familiar applications, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, while automatically generating the necessary code in the background for the developer. Exercise files accompany the course.
Topics include:
Creating interactive content from Photoshop and Illustrator design compositions
Turning ordinary graphics into functional components like buttons and sliders
Using smooth transitions and animation techniques
Moving content between Flash Catalyst and Flash Builder
Declarative Graphics
Flex 4 will make good use of FXG, the new graphics interchange format used with the CS4 graphics applications. Flex 4 and Flash Player 10 can together render FXG graphical elements. These include:
graphics and text primitives
fills, strokes, gradients, and bitmaps
support for filters, masks, alphas, and blend modes.
FXG graphical elements can be used in Flex 4 in a number of ways. FXG elements can be used within an MXML file or component and can also be saved as an .fxg file format. The CS4 tools will typically export an FXG using the FXG 2008 namespace. Because these files are designed to be shared between graphical applications, you’ll find that they have a stricter format to what’s used in Flex; the Flex compiler will only use the FXG-specific tags. Adobe’s new application, Flash Catalyst, will make it easy to create FXG graphics compatible with Flex 4, which you can then use to complete your application’s user interface and appearance.
New effects have been added to Flex 4 that can also be applied to FXG graphical elements. These new effects will work on both new and old components alike. Standalone effects must now be declared within fx:Declarationstags instead of the body of the application. Once again, Flash Catalyst has additional tools to help make using these effects easier.

Any and all advice is welcome.

Do you have different versions of the graphic novel pages, or is there just one version of the page? If there is one version, can you crop into the page without losing anything important?
I would guess that there is one version, and that cropping into the page will lose something important. If that's the case, here's how I would handle it:
Make a stage that is 14:9. The size doesn't matter, but 1400x900 could be a good starting point.
Put down a background texture that fits well with the look of the other images. Make that fill the 1400x900 stage.
Place your page graphics so that they are within the center 1200x788 area of the stage.
Set the stage scalemode to "noBorder".
You now have a layout that will work on all devices, as narrow as iPad, and as wide as iPhone 5. All without any code. On the widest devices you'll see a bit of your background pattern to the left and right of the page graphic. On the narrowest devices you'll see a bit of background pattern above and below the page graphic. But you won't lose sight of anything important.

  • How can I get to the compiler arguments in Flash Builder 4.6?

    Howdy!
So far I've been unable to locate any information that could help me with my task. The ultimate goal is to build my project's SWF with mxmlc. I was not able to figure it out and thought I'd install Flash Builder in the hopes of being able to get to the compiler arguments. No luck.
First, I'm not the lead on the building of the SWF. This is done by another person via the Eclipse plugin; her hard drive crashed last night too. In fact I'm not a Flash developer. I'm coming at this from a Build Infrastructure perspective.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • What is the language used in Flash Builder?

Hi everyone - total noob here.
I'm really interested in learning how to code ( I'm a designer, and want to add coding to my skill set).
What would be the best way to get up to speed? What language should i learn?
Flash Builder & Cataylst look amazing.
    cheers

Thank you all for such a swift response. I wouldn't expect anything less
    from an Adobe forum.
-markerlin - I guess we're in the same boat, eh? You shed some more light
    on the subject for me
*-David - *Thank you for your clarification. It sounds like, there are three
"languages" I should be looking at: actionscript, fxg & mxml, correct? if I
want to be involved in both the design and the back-end aspect of a project?
    Is mxml anything like xml?
    - John - *Thank you for your brief yet concise answer. I'm just trying to
get a clear picture of where i should be focusing my attention.
I'm basically a designer, who wants to make the leap to designing business
solutions to companies who want to (or need to be convinced to) take
advantage of the amazing technology that's out there. After watching this
Adobe eSeminar yesterday, *"Extend your brand and deliver compelling
customer experiences"*, and viewing this (cool) graph,
    http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=121875404, you'll
notice that "computer systems design and related services", as well
    as "*management,
scientific and technical consulting services*" have the biggest % leap of
all industries. I'd like to position myself somewhere in there in the next
    decade.
Essentially, i'd like to be a designer that can explain what the
programming/coding needs to be and actually *know *what i'm talking about...
    That's my long answer, anyway.
Oh, and thank you for this site!

  • Cannot edit the manifest.xml in flash builder extension builder 2.1

In flash builder I installed the extension builder 2.1 to build a photoshop extension. The basic structure created automatically the manifest.xml file but i cannot edit this file in the editor and If I edit outside of the flash builder it does not reflect the changes.
What I want is to add an icon for my extension.

    SOLVED!!
    ===========
When creating an adobe extension project in Adobe extension Builder with Flash Builder 4.6, a folder ".stage-extension" is created but not listed in the directory in the Package Explorer Tab. However the manifest.xml file in the bin-debug folder is shown giving the impression that it could be edited.
To edit the manifest.xml file, locate the location of your project and find: YourPorjectName>.stage-extension>CSXS>manifest.xml
Edit this manifest.xml for the changes to apply.

  • How to update the AIR included in Flash Builder SDK?

So, the Flash Builder SDK comes with a version of AIR, which it uses when you package a mobile app for iOS (Android mobile apps are run with the AIR that's downloaded from the Marketplace)...  On my Windows machine, this "built-in" copy of AIR is located in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4.6\sdks\4.6.0\runtimes\" unless I'm mistaken.
I'm pretty sure that it does not automatically update itself -- and I'm equally certain that it's a pretty old version of AIR, because it's the one that was included with the 4.6 SDK which was released 8 months ago...
So how do I update this version of AIR that's built into the Flash Builder SDK?
    Thanks,
    Laurence MacNeill
    Mableton, Georgia, USA

Oops -- never mind...  Didn't realize there was a separate AIR SDK that you could download -- I thought it was integrated into the Flex SDK, and since there hasn't been a new Flex SDK since 4.6, I thought I had to somehow grab pieces and parts of AIR to update this manually...
But grabbing the AIR SDK from http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/air-sdk-download.html did the trick...  Just unzipped that into the sdks\4.6.0 folder and was done...  Sweet...

  • Can't build the compiler from within Flash Builder 4

    Hey!
I've decided to try and dabble some with modifying the compiler, mainly just for fun but if I can I hope to be able to contribute to the project somehow. In any case, I've gotten everything to build properly using the ant script, but I can't seem to make the java compiler bits to build correctly in Flash Builder. This baffles me because everything seems to be set correctly and I get no linked resource errors. FLEX_SDK is set and verfied, as is ANT17_JAR, ANT_HOME and JAVA_HOME. • What is the workflow for creating Flash Builder 4.7 Applications?

Now that Design View has been removed from Flash Builder 4.7 I was wondering what the proposed workflow is for creating software?
What is the suggested flow? How can a developer layout a screen visually? Or is it true that this is just no longer possible?

  • Form Builder and Graphics Builder Integration

Does anyone have tested code fragments to do the following?:
Send a mousedown event to a chart embedded in a form.
Get back the section of a (pie) chart that was clicked.

  • Flash Builder Integration

Flash CS5 has the ability to integrate with Flash Builder for editing AS files but I can't find a way to make it work with existing Flash projects. The docs tell how to do it when creating new FLA/AS files but they don't say anything about existing projects. I've changed my ActionScript preferences to always use Flash Builder as my Class Editor but that makes no difference. Whenever I open a .AS file either with File | Open or by double-clicking in the Project panel the file opens within Flash. How can I get it to open AS files in Flash Builder (for a project that was created with an older version of Flash)?
    David Salahi
P.S. I've even tried exporting as XFL to see if there's a way to change the settings but there doesn't seem to be anything related in the XML.

I found a workaround: create a new .FLA file in CS5 and use that one instead of the old one. After doing that, when I double-click files in the Project panel they open in Flash Builder.
This workaround is OK for simple FLA files but it's not going to be practical for an FLA of any complexity. So, I'm still wondering if there's a better way?

Yes, flash builder 4 was the name given to what is effectively flex 4.
    This answer is, essentially wrong.
Flex 4 is a Software Development Kit (SDK) that includes a compiler, a user interface framework, and a few other items.
Flash Builder 4 is an IDE that can be used to develop Flex applications.  Flash Builder 4 can also be used to code ActionScript w/o any dependencies to the Flex Framework.
Grizzzzzzzzzz wrote: 2. Are Flash Builder 4 and Flash CS4 the same ?
No, Creative suite 4 is a software library consisting of many different programs
This answer is much more correct; but for additional clarification:
Flash Builder 4 is an IDE that programmers can use to develop applications for the Flash Platform.
Flash Professional CS4 is an IDE that Designers can use to create time-line based animations for the Flash Platform.
One is geared for designers; and another for programmers.  In theory they can be used to reach the same end point although I wouldn't want to do application programming in Flash Professional; nor would I Want to do design stuff in Flash Builder.
