Text Arch

I am trying to arch text, is this possible in Pages '09?

Illustrator is fairly straight forward on this.
You create an arch by either drawing one, or deleting unwanted parts of a circle.
Then you click on the arched line with the text path tool (T on a wavy line) and type what you want.
When you click on the line with text on it using the direct selection tool (hollow one) you get a "handle" with which you can drag the text back and forth, you can centre or left or right align the text on this handle.
The text selected on the line behaves much as any text behaves, can be edit or styled as you want.
Best to save the file as a .pdf or .ai with .pdf preview to drag into Pages from Finder.

  • Arch Linux Distrowatch's ranking via conky

    in 3 steps
    1) Download Beautiful Soup for Python & copy BeautifulSoup.py to /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages
    2) Create ranking.py containing:
    #!/usr/bin/env python
    import urllib2
    from BeautifulSoup import BeautifulSoup
    address = "http://distrowatch.com/"
    try:
        website = urllib2.urlopen(address)
        soup = BeautifulSoup(''.join(website))
        rankings = soup.find(text= "Page Hit Ranking").findParent("table").find(text="Arch").findParent("tr").find("th").string
        print rankings
    except:
        print "N/A"
    3) Add in .conkyrc
    Distrowatch's Ranking: $alignr ${execi 7200 python ~/.scripts/ranking.py}

    Thanks a lot for that script
    A few notes:
    a) Beautiful Soup is in the community repo. You can get it with: pacman -S python-beautifulsoup
    b) This script didn't work for me right away. After some help from the #python channel on FreeNode I found out, that it's probably because I'm behind a proxy. When executed from bash (where http_proxy was set) it was working, with conky not. I've searched the internet and found, that urllib2 has a proxy handler. I wasn't able to test it yet, but my script looks now as follows:
    #!/usr/bin/env python
    import urllib2
    from BeautifulSoup import BeautifulSoup
    address = "http://distrowatch.com/"
    try:
    proxy = urllib2.ProxyHandler({'http':'http://proxy.yourdomain.com:8080'})
    opener = urllib2.build_opener(proxy)
    urllib2.install_opener(opener)
    website = urllib2.urlopen(address)
    soup = BeautifulSoup(''.join(website))
    rankings = soup.find(text= "Page Hit Ranking").findParent("table").find(text="Arch").findParent("tr").find("th").string
    print rankings
    except:
    print "N/A"
    # EOF
    c) I didn't have a command python on my system, but rather python2. So the line in the conkyrc needs to changed as well (for users with the same problem):
    Distrowatch's Ranking: $alignr ${execi 7200 python2 ~/.scripts/ranking.py}
    Cheers,

    Fame! Eternal glory! Tacos! … or poutine if you're one of them.
    You could have all of these wonderful prizes and more if you can design a logo for Arch Hurd!
    Ideas to (possibly) work with:
    * Archlinux logo style 'A'
    * A GNU
    * Blue is a good colour. I like blue.
    So, talented Arch community, show me what you can do!
    Deadline: I'll make a voting thread on the 22nd (Friday), so you have until then to submit your ideas.
    However, if there haven't been any more submissions by 5PM tomorrow (GMT) I'll assume there won't be any more and start the voting them. Friday is the final deadline if people keep submitting attempts.

    I guess you are right. Here it is (again) with transparency and as svg:

    svg (feel free to improve)
    It is based on the HURD logo:

    I like this idea alot.
    Maybe this logo and the text "arch linux" on the side all in black and white and nothing else. That would look great!

  • 2 Conky Problems-Suddenly scrunched formatting and IP set to 127.0.0.1

    I have 2 problems with conky, I'm not sure if they are related. First, conky started displaying all scrunched up with much of the formatting wrong. I did not make any configuration changes at the time. I'm sure that I can go through my conkyrc and adjust everything so that it's looking correct again, but I'd rather not unless I have no other choice.
    Second, a while after starting conky, the IP changes from my correct IP, to 127.0.0.1.
    I've exhausted my google-fu and I don't know what is wrong. Thanks ahead of time for any help!

  • Installing X fails

    I've now tried twice (last weekend and today) to install X on a plain text Arch Linux setup. Both attempts failed.
    Following the beginner's cheatsheet and being not much more than an intelligent ape I did this:
    # pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils
    This downloaded a dozen files or so and then spat out many 404's to the effect that xorg-server-common-1.12.4-1 can't be found on any of the mirrors.
    I thought that perhaps the mirrors were in the process of being updated so I repeated the whole exercise today. Same result.
    Any ideas?

    WonderWoofy wrote:Just want to make sure... you are connected to the internet, yeah?`
    Well, I am an idiot sometimes but I try to avoid to be that stupid. Simply skimming my OP would've answered that:
    t4711 wrote:This downloaded a dozen files or so and then spat out many 404's to the effect that xorg-server-common-1.12.4-1 can't be found on any of the mirrors.
    Anyway, either or both of
    # pacman -Syu
    # pacman -Syy
    solved the problem. (I now have X and Xfce up and running though the latter is a bit too heavy for my liking. I'll have to check other DEs/WMs.)
    It would be a great idea and certainly help complete Linux and Arch newbies like me (who nevertheless RTFM) if the beginner's guide carried a BIG FLASHING HINT warning people to always update via -Syu before installing something. I did a -Syu during the install (as instructed by the beginner's guide) but I had not realised that this should be done before any new install.
    So far I gotta say that Arch has been great. There are some small niggles with the beginner's guide and some rough edges but it is possible to install and use the system without any prior knowledge of Linux. Having said that, much (perhaps too much) of the material online assumes that the user has at least some Linux background. Believe it or not, even some technically advanced people don't.
    My 2 cent.

  • KGlad - need help with arched text again

    Hi, you helped me recently with some arhed text. I was trying
    to figure out at way to get the arched text font size to get
    smaller as more and more letters were entered into the input field.
    What would you charge to get something like that working?

    1. you wanted the text to start in the center-top of the
    output textfield and begin to arch towards the lower right and
    lower left symmetrically so the arched text expands from the center
    towards the lower corners.
    2. you want to start with a certain font and font-size
    3. you want to decrease the font-size as more text is entered
    in the input textfield just when the arched text begins to extend
    beyond the output textfield's borders in order to keep the arched
    text within the output textfield's borders.
    is that correct? is there anything else?

  • Adjust Arch forum text with dark theme

    I have written 2 greasemonkey scripts (these are usually helpful for people with dark themes):
    - One that changes the subject box and buttons to white text
    // ==UserScript==
    // @name Arch Linux Dark Text Fix
    // @description Displays dark text on an Arch Linux page.
    // @include http://bbs.archlinux.org/post.php*
    // @include http://bbs.archlinux.org/edit.php*
    // ==/UserScript==
    function addGlobalStyle(css) {
    var head, style;
    head = document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0];
    if (!head) { return; }
    style = document.createElement('style');
    style.type = 'text/css';
    style.innerHTML = css;
    head.appendChild(style);
    addGlobalStyle('input { color:white; }');
    - One that changes the message box to black text
    // ==UserScript==
    // @name Arch Linux Light Text Fix
    // @description Displays light text on an Arch Linux page.
    // @include http://bbs.archlinux.org/post.php*
    // @include http://bbs.archlinux.org/edit.php*
    // ==/UserScript==
    function addGlobalStyle(css) {
    var head, style;
    head = document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0];
    if (!head) { return; }
    style = document.createElement('style');
    style.type = 'text/css';
    style.innerHTML = css;
    head.appendChild(style);
    addGlobalStyle('textarea { color:black; }');
    Save those into a text file with a .user.js extension and import them into greasemonkey.

    Well, a screenshot wouldn't be of use, because the text is a very dim white, and you wouldn't even be able to see it. Just imagine what it looks like
    But here it is anyway. If you look really closely you can see the text "This is white text".

    You can't do that in Pages. If you need text in an arch use Art text 2 lite, free from the Mac AppStore.

  • How to create arched text without using envelope warp in Illustrator?

    I am using Illustrator cs3 on mac os X This is a video of my problem that I sent to a fellow designer but didn't get an answer I was happy with. Can anyone help?
    http://www.screencast.com/t/4RePFrecwr

    The Appearance Panel is your friend. You don't need to duplicate items, simply add a new stroke to the existing object via the Appearance panel.
    To edit the contents of an Envelope Distort simply choose Object > Envelope Distort > Edit Contents. The preview bounding box will look odd, but you'll be able to select the text and apply any color to it.
    You could also expand the object using Object > Expand And ONLY check the "Object" box. This will result in outlines of the text where you can apply colors as well without the envelope getting in the way. But of course, it's no longer live text.

  • Arching, angled text, large to smaller text.

    Hello there, I don't know if this is the right place to post this question on, but I just wanted to know how and if a certain effect can be applied to Illustrator. I wanted to get this text shape and angle that is found on the link below which reads 'PELICANS'.
    http://logopond.com/gallery/detail/187441
    As you can see the 'P' starts of as the Largest letter and then the letters become smaller and at an angle, and then becoming larger again. It would be great if anyone could tell me how to do this. The only way to contact people at Logopond is by writing a public comment or forum, but not for help needed in doing certain things in a particular program. Its usually for design comments helping create brand logo and identity.
    Thanks

  • EeePC- SDHC Issues only with Arch

    To begin with I have a Eeepc 701 4G and a A-DATA 16GB SDHC Turbo Eee PC Edition card. Whenever I try to install Arch via a usb drive, I get a error on boot that says something along the lines of I/O error with my SDHC card which is listed as /dev/sdc1. Normally I would think this is a defective card or its going bad but Arch is the only distro that gives me this error.  The error is just in the text that scrolls by but it also hangs when trying to partition the SDHC drive To test it out I have installed Mandriva 2008.1 Spring, Ubuntu 7.10/8.04/8.10, Ubuntu-eee, fluxflux-eee, and Forsight Mobile (I have been going crazy trying to find a distro I can live with/ even close to what Arch provides). Each one of them I set the / partition on the internal SSD and the /home partition on the SDHC card. Arch is the only one that gives a error with the SDHC card. I have ran extensive tests in Linux and also windows(sisoft sandra) but everything is fine with the card. The card is supported as it is a "Eee PC Edition Model" http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820211300  I have noticed tha some distros have problem with installing via a usb drive and using /home on a SDHC drive(only Fluxflux-eee) but it is normally a /etc/fstab issue not the I/0.
    Any ideals?
    THanks
    BTW: The card is only 2 weeks old.

    hi guys,
    I had a similar bug on my netbook with the Elantech touchpad. I have reported a bug to the maintainer of the Elantech driver and I get a patch that fix it.
    description of my bug:
    with two fingers above the touchpad, tap alterrnatively with each finger on the touchpad.
    - expected behaviour: the cursor does not move.
    - actual behaviour: the cursor jumps sometimes to the left or the right.
    this only happens when configuring the touchpad with synaptics (by defaults, mine is detected as a mouse)
    is your bug the same than mine ?
    are you using both the proto=exps option and synaptics ? (I still have the bug in this configuration)
    if it is the same bug, I have submited the patched kernel to AUR

  • Arch PPC, a G4 and a Saturday

    I had some spare time Saturday. Well, actually, I had plenty of stuff
    to do, I just did not want to. I was sitting at my desk thinking of
    anything that I could be doing besides what I should be doing
    A shiny box in the corner of my office caught me eye!
    I have two Apple G4 machines, both are 450MHz (Don't be a hater!)
    My oldest son has one that he plays around with. It has OSX on it.
    The other one was sitting in the corner of my office here at home.
    It had OSX on it also. But it was not being used at all.
    Trying Arch PPC on the G4 had been a plan for a while. The time to try
    it had come. It was placed on "the rack". The shiny G4 was going to be
    a file server!
    The install went very well, and quick. There were only two hangups.
    If I had taken the time to read before installing, the first problem would not
    have been a problem at all. It was the issue with OpenSSH requiring heimdal.
    And heimdal being in extra and not in core.
    The second problem was after the install. The G4 was rebooted and I
    was greeted with a screen full of scrolling text.
    DEFAULT CATCH, code=300 at %SRR0:...
    There was more on the line that I do not remember. That line looped
    forever. My official opinion was "that ain't right". A Google search told
    me that it might be trying the wrong partition and I needed to boot into
    OpenFirmware (OF) and make it manually boot the correct partition.
    Getting in OF was a challenge. Googling for ways to get into it gave
    plenty of hits. After many failed attempts, I finally got in and told it
    what to boot (boot hd:3,yaboot) and Arch PPC was running!
    I had read that running "ybin" would fix the booting error. When the
    system was fully up, ybin was ran. Then the system was rebooted and it came up
    the way it should!
    Then OpenSSH, Samba, ProFTP, and lighttpd was installed.
    The total time it took, from start to finish, was under 45 mins.
    Remember the stuff that I was trying to avoid doing? There was still
    time left to do those things. Not good   I needed to kill more time.
    Why not add X and e17? Although neither of those would be
    used much, if ever, on a file server. So what! I want to see how it
    does with X running.
    I installed X, firefox, thunar, terminal, x11vnc and e17.
    I added 3 more HDs. Now there is a little over 1TB in the G4.
    When everything was installed, startx.
    The screenshot shows the CPU at 7%. That is not accurate. On average,
    with X and e17 running, the CPU stays near 50%. X wont be used anyway.
    The box will run headless. Without X running, the CPU stays at about 1%.
    The G4 was placed in the location it will remain. Booted up (no X.)
    Everything was tested, everything works.
    All that added about 40 mins onto the time (e17 had to be compiled.)
    And I still had plenty of time to mow the lawn

    I'd buy that shirt!
    Also: nicely done! I thought about installing Arch PPC on my iBook but then again, I'd miss Textmate. Maybe on a second partition ... later.
