Text variable one frame behind

I have a dynamic textbox (txtBox) which contains a global
variable jobTitle from frame 1 to 20. I have an Actionscript on
each frame saying _global.jobTitle="something"; I also have a
button which switches on and off the txtBox. My problem is that the
content of the jobTitle variable is one frame behind. If I put
trace(_global.jobTitle); in the button code it gives the correct
answer. But the textBox reveals the previous jobTitle.
I reckon I should approach this differently - can anyone give
me a hint, please?
Marion

Perhaps I should add that this worked fine before I added the
button that hides/reveals txtBox. That is, another button moved to
the next frame and the variable was correct.

• Error in Display of Text variable

Hello gurus,
I have a requirement in which power user wants to see the output as follows :
Product sold of Current year for months --- to -
         /  Product Sold of Previous year for months --- to -
So if on Selection screen ,user enters months 01/2005- 05/2005
it should show the
Product sold for 01/2005-05/2005  / Product sold for 01/2004-05/2004
So i created 2 text variables one for start period and second for ending period.
I included this in the display of 1st column.
It is coming perfectly.
Now how shall i include or do this for 2nd column.
In second column i just set the offsets value so data is coming right
If i restrict those with time chara.
But in display of 2nd column ,
WHAT SETTINGS I DO FOR TEXT VARIABLES.
plust the requirement is that.
User shall enter the Value of range of months only ONCE.

Hi Noviced
1.  Create a variable having user input enabled for calmonth range.
2. Create a customer exit variable
3. Restrict one KF with this cust exit variable and one with user input variable
4. Cust exit variable will give the value of previous year months.
5. Write the code in CMOD under ur project
DATA: loc_var_range LIKE rrrangeexit,
                 l_s_range   LIKE rrrangesid.  "Header line for E_T_RANGE for export
WHEN 'ZTEXT'.
IF i_step = 2.
READ TABLE  i_t_var_range INTO loc_var_range WITH KEY  vnam = 'ZINPUT'.
v_year = loc_var_range-low+0(4).               " Take the year
v_month_start = loc_var_range-low+4(2) . " Take the starting month
v_month_end = loc_var_range-high+4(2).   " Take the ending month
v_year = v_year - 1.
CONCATENATE v_year v_month_start INTO l_s_range-low.
CONCATENATE v_year v_month_end  INTO l_s_range-high.
l_s_range-sign = 'I'.
l_s_range-opt = 'BT'.
APPEND l_s_range TO e_t_range.
ENDIF.

• How to get the Text variables in the Columns Headings

Hi,
         My requirement is I need to get data for weekly wise and for the last 10 weeks also. For this purpose I used the restricted KF based on the variables (customer exit) and offset. Also used the text variable for displaying from and to days in the column headings. I am getting the right text for the first column only. But the text offset is not considering.
Ex 07/04/2007 to 07/10/2007      06/27/2007 to 07/03/2007 like that.
I used the two text variables one for from data and other for to date using the customer exit. I am getting the same text as of the first column for the subsequent columns also. Please help me for getting the right text in the columns.
Thanks,
visu

Hello ,
               The quite simple way is to create a text variable with replacement path , as it replaces the value of customer exit used in the report.
create two text variables
First variable:
1 Replace variable with -
external characteristic key value
For interval use ---from value
2.Secod text variable
Replace variable with -
external characteristic key value
For interval use ---To value
offset start -0000 offset length0000
use these variables in the column headings.
hope it is clear,
assign points if useful

• How to make a text variable (running header - character) resize a text frame?

I have successfully been able to get a metadata text variable to auto-resize a text frame, but when I change the text variable to a running header-character/paragraph variable, the text frame does not resize - in fact it gets smaller and squashes the text.
Surely if Indesign can handle one kind of variable it should handle another??
Please help!

Thanks all.
Will- I tried adding another character to the text box but this made no difference.
Eugene- I'm trying to avoid the purchase of any 3rd party plugins due to budget constraints.
I realised that all I needed to do was use a wide paragraph rule to emulate a box behind the text, and make the text box long enough to hold all possible variables.
One other issue has now cropped up, the running header (character) only grabs the text up to the first return, but I need it to grab all text formatted with the Character Style (2-3 lines max).
I require a forced line break in the title (where the header is being pulled from) as it has a paragraph rule style attached, requiring a full return for each line of the title.
Any ideas?

Both your classes seem to be independent applications. (they are public, and they have their public static void main)
Is this your intention? If so, your question is how to pass data from one application to another. That can be done in many ways, and it is a complicated issue. (if one application wants to pass data to another, you first have to find the other one, and if it isnt running you might want to start... - lots of things to think about.)
If what you want to do is simply to pass data from one Frame to another, the matter is quite more simple.
Here is a sample:
import java.awt.event.*;
import java.awt.*;
public class F1 extends Frame implements ActionListener
private F2 theOtherFrame;
public F1()
Button b;
b=new Button("Action");
b.addActionListener(this);
add(b);
setSize(100,100);
setVisible(true);
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
if (theOtherFrame == null)
         theOtherFrame = new F2();
         theOtherFrame.setSize(100, 100);
theOtherFrame.setSomeData("Her you have som data");
theOtherFrame.setVisible(true);
public static void main(String[] args)
new F1();
class F2 extends Frame
private String strData;
private Label lab;
public void setSomeData(String str)
lab.setText(str);
repaint();
public F2()
lab = new Label();
add(lab);

• ADF : How to pass a variable from one frame to another frame ?

Hi,
I have an html page divided into 3 frames, all inside a frameset. Each frame are linked to a specific .jsf page (src attribute). When I list a list thanks to a ADF datatable in ONE frame, each row has a "show more" button. When I click this button I succeeded to print row detail inside the same frame thanks to the processScope ADF's native variable. The problem is that I want to display the row detail in another frame, clicking from this current frame. So for this I need to reload the other frame which display the content of the processScope variable.
For this I use the javascript code :
=> parent.frames['bottomRight'].location.reload()
Just before refreshing, I put the variable in the processScope of course like it appears in the backing bean :
FacesContext context = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
              CLPRMBuilding building = (CLPRMBuilding)
         context.getApplication().getVariableResolver().resolveVariable(context, "building");
         if (building == null)
         return "error";
         AdfFacesContext afContext = AdfFacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
         afContext.getProcessScope().put("buildingDetail", building);
Next, when the user click on the button "show more" a binding CoreCommandButton component is done. And the accessor's code is executed :
public void setShowMoreCommandButton(CoreCommandButton showMoreCommandButton) {
              this.showMoreCommandButton = showMoreCommandButton;
              showMoreCommandButton.setOnclick("parent.frames['bottomRight'].location.reload()");
And so the other frame is reloaded ! But the "buildingDetail" variable seems not to be present in the processScope because in the jsf page displayed by the other frame no content is printed, like if the variable were not initialized. How to do then ? How to pass the buildingDetail variable to the other frame which I need to reload to refresh it's content ?

I am wondering why does (r.a) give an error outside the method? What's the reason it only works when used inside the (b/r.a) maths function? This is illegal syntax:
class B {
      int b;
      A r = new A();
      r.a;  //syntax error
}Why? Class definition restricts what you can define within a class to a few things:
class X {
        Y y = new Y(); //defining a field -- okay
        public X() { //defining a constructor -- okay
        void f() { //defining a method -- okay
}... and a few other things, but you can't just write "r.a" there. It also makes no sense -- that expression by itself just accesses a field and does nothing with it -- why bother?
This is also illegal syntax:
int doB() {
          A r = new A();
          r.a;  // error: not a statement
}Again, all "r.a" does on its own is access a field and do nothing with it -- a "noop". Since it has no effect, writing this indicates confusion on the part of the coder, so it classified as a syntax error. There is no reason to write that.

• Text variable over more than one line

Hi,
I want to use text variables in table cells. But if the content of the variable is to long to fit in one line, then InDesign hides the complete content of the variable. I thing, this is a "no-go" for text variables. What, if it currently fits and then I increase the character size so that it will not fit? Ughhhhh!
Is there a work-a-round for this problem?
What do you think about it?
Should this behaviour changed in future releases of InDesign?
With Greetings from Germany
Ralf
(sorry about my not really good english)

What I've done in the past is
Find out how many characters per line.
Setup character style called VarLine 1, VarLine 2, VarLine 3 etc.
Set up a paragraph style for your text.
Go to the nested style.
VarLine 1 up to # characters
VarLine 2 up to # characters
VarLine 3 up to # characters
etc.
Set up your Variables for
Line 1
Line 2
Line 3
Then set each one to pick up the appropriate VarLine character style.
This works to a certain extent, it will need tweaking, as each application is different. I'm not sure if it will work in your case, but you never know.

Hi ACE BW,
You can try to use the SELECT statement and then include the LOOP inside it.

• After Effects CS6: Adjacent text layers overlap by one frame, can't fix it

Adjacent text layers, which we are using to subtitle bits of video, butt up against each other and in some instances it's fine (the text changes at the correct frame), but in others the text from the first one bleeds by one frame into the second and overlaps. If I shorten the time on the first one by one frame, there is a gap with no text. How can I fix this? The comp is built from the video so the frame rate of the comp is the same for the video file.
Thanks for any help!
Glen

Thanks very much Mylenium for your help - I've scoured the file looking for everything you mention, and there anything fancy at all. I'm using no time-stretching or remapping, simply putting a text layer on top of a video, and moving its in and out points. No blurs or odd keyframes as far as I can tell. Video and comp are both 29.97 framerate (comp created using "New comp from selection").

Thoughts?

• Copy static text from one MIF documents to other MIF document

Hi All,
I'm trying to copy the text frames and their contents from one document to other document.
I"m following the bellow steps..!
1. Open Template1.mif by F_ApiSimpleOpen()
2. Create new document called "Template2.mif" using "F_ApiCustomDoc"
3. Import the required formats by
F_ApiSimpleImportFormats(Template2,Template1,FF_UFF_COLOR |FF_UFF_COMBINED_FONTS |FF_UFF_COND |FF_UFF_DOCUMENT_PROPS |FF_UFF_FONT |FF_UFF_MATH |FF_UFF_PAGE |FF_UFF_PGF |FF_UFF_TABLE |FF_UFF_VAR))
4. Read the text frames from "Template1" and create new text frame in Template2
         pgfId = F_ApiGetId(FV_SessionId, Template1, FP_FirstFlowInDoc);
         while (pgfid) {
         //     create a new text frame in Template2
              tFrameId = F_ApiNewGraphicObject(Template2, FO_TextFrame, pFrameId);
              objGraphicId = F_ApiGetId(Template1, pgfId, FP_FirstTextFrameInFlow);
         //assigning the properties of text frames
              propspdf = F_ApiGetProps(docIdfrom, objGraphicId);
              F_ApiSetProps(docIdto, tFrameId,&propspdf);
Till this step, it is working as expected.
Next I need to read the paragraphs of each text frame and put only static text available in the TEXT FRAMES OF Template1 in newly crated TEXT FRAMES of Template2. But ignore the variables in the text frames.
I tried to work with the following piece of code
         doc2PgfId = F_ApiGetId(docIdfrom, objGraphicId, FP_FirstPgf);
         doc1PgfId = F_ApiGetId(docIdto, tFrameId, FP_FirstPgf);

                        F_ApiDeallocatePropVals(&props);
                        props = F_ApiGetTextProps(docIdfrom, &tr.beg);
                        F_ApiSetTextProps(docIdto, &trT.beg,&props);
                        name1=(StringT)ti->u.sdata;

                 bPgfalive = False;
                 break;

where am I going wrong? Is there any simple way of doing it?
How do I go ahead with this? Please help..!
Thanks,
Basav

Hi Michael,
Thanks for quick reply..!
There was a piece of code which validates whether the text frame I needed exists or not. I intentionally removed so as to not to confuse the reader.
Let me give you a clear picture that what I want to do..!
I've a MIF file and XML file that has the details of text frames and its contents in the MIF. XML looks like
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<MyProjectXML>
<TextFrame frame="fr18111dd"><P>Basava</P></TextFrame>
<TextFrame frame="fr224362cc"><P>Prabhu</P></TextFrame>
<TextFrame frame="fr2547"><P>5 Year Performance (US Dollar)</P></TextFrame>
</MyProjectXML>
My MIF file has more than 50  named text frames. Some of them are in XML file, like - fr18111dd, fr224362cc,fr2547. These text frames have the static text,variables and tables. [ Tables I've kept it aside to work later for now]
What I need -
Need a MIF file that has frames available in XML file and replace the variables with the values given in <P> tag and keep the static text as it is.
I'm trying the other way now, Open the MIF file and delete all the text frames except the frames mentioned in the XML file and save as new file.
Let me know if I'm doing anything wrong here..! That will save my time and effort.
Am I clear on my query? and what I wanted to achive ? Let me know otherwise..!
Thanks,
Basav

• Text variable + text with tabs to align away from spine

Hello
I need a document header that shows the chapter captions. So I created a text variable that picks the format of the caption.
But the chapter captions have tabs:
I.>Introduction
So in the header, on the left pages it looks fine:
alignment is "away from spine"
I.>Introduction
But on the right page the chapter number remains with the spine, only the text after the tabs aligns "away from the spine":
I.                 >                                   Introduction
I found it difficult to search for this on google and the forum (and no result) - and hope I made it clear in the text above I can't believe it's a rare problem and really hope I just oversee something and it can be solved..
Thank you!!

Some details about how the paragraph is constructed would help. I'm guessing here that the variable is a running head variable based on paragraph style, and that the nmber is manually typed, along with the tab, rather than being a numbered list.
If that's the case, substituting one or more em spaces or other fixed-width spaces in combination for the tab should solve the problem in the headers, but may cause other issues in the body of the text if your intention by using the tab was to always have a variable space between the number and the words depening on how many characters there are in your number. With roman numerals and proportional fonts it would be difficult without the tab to always have the chapter title itself begin at the same x-coordinate in the frame regardless of the number.
To overcome that issue, you can use two variables in the header, both designated as Running Header (character style), and separate them with an em-space or similar (not a tab). If there are not already nested styles in use for the titles, create two character styles that are nothing but names, then in the paragraph style for your chapter titles go to Drop Caps and Nested Styles and apply the first character syle up to 1 tab character, None through 1 tab character, and the second character style through 1 sentence. You two character style based variables in the header will pick up the two parts of the paragraph. It seems unlikely that anyone would notice or care that the spacing is fixed between number and text in the headers but not on the page, especially since the alignment shifts from page to page.

• Identical actionscript works in one frame but not another...?

Hi all,
I'm working on this electronic sheep creator for my Masters
degree (don't ask haha..) which is online at
www.aegreen.co.uk/creativetech/ . The problem I'm having
is that a piece of actionscript I'm using for saving the sheep as a
jpg using BitmapData works in one frame with one movie clip but not
in another frame..
In frame 1 I create two movie clips - mc_modifysheep and
mc_dna:
on(release) {
_root.createEmptyMovieClip("mc_modifysheep", 1)
mc_modifysheep._x = 150;
mc_modifysheep._y = 70;
mc_modifysheep.attachMovie("sheep_body", "body", 1, {_x:42,
_y:65});
mc_modifysheep.attachMovie("sheep_head", "head", 2, {_x:0,
_y:0});
mc_modifysheep.attachMovie("sheep_legs", "legs", 3, {_x:77,
_y:215});
_global.bodycolour = "default";
_global.headcolour = "default";
_global.legscolour = "default";
_root.createEmptyMovieClip("mc_dna", 2)
mc_dna._x = 0;
mc_dna._y = 0;
mc_dna.attachMovie("mc_DNA_empty", "DNA empty", 1, {_x:8,
_y:360});
mc_dna.attachMovie("mc_dna_default_default_top", "top", 2,
{_x:45, _y:374});
mc_dna.attachMovie("mc_dna_default_default_right", "right",
3, {_x:65, _y:400});
mc_dna.attachMovie("mc_dna_default_default_left", "left", 4,
{_x:32, _y:401});

}
the sheep in 'mc_modifysheep' and the dna in 'mc_dna' are
built up over frames 2 and 3 and then in frame 4 the user decides
whether the sheep is given freedom or captivity. If freedom is
chosen then the user is prompted to name their sheep and the movie
clip mc_modifysheep is saved as a jpg on the server using
BitmapData and PHP. If captivity is chosen then the user is
prompted to name the dna and the movie clip mc_dna is meant to be
saved as a jpg on the server but only a white blank jpg is
produced, not what is contained in mc_dna.. I've tried all sorts
but I can't figure out why it's doing this..
Here's the code I'm using, that works, to save the
mc_modifysheep:
import flash.display.BitmapData;
btn_freedom.onPress = function() {
freedom();
function freedom() {
snap_sheep = new BitmapData(305, 290);
snap_sheep.draw(mc_modifysheep);
var pixels:Array = new Array();
var w:Number = snap_sheep.width;
var h:Number = snap_sheep.height;
var a:Number = 0;
var sn:String = txt_Freedom.text;
high = 99999;
low = 00000;
ran =
Math.floor(Math.random()*(Number(high)+1-Number(low)))+Number(low);
var rn:Number = ran
var filename:String = dn+sn;
for (var a = 0; a <= w; a++) {
for (var b = 0; b <= h; b++) {
var tmp = snap_sheep.getPixel(a, b).toString(16);
pixels.push(tmp);
var freedomoutput:LoadVars = new LoadVars();
freedomoutput.img = pixels.toString();
freedomoutput.height = h;
freedomoutput.width = w;
freedomoutput.filename_sheep = filename;
freedomoutput.send("save_sheep.php", "_self", "POST");
stop();
and here's the near identical code apart from different
variable/movieclip names I'm using to try and save (but failing)
mc_dna:
import flash.display.BitmapData;
btn_capt.onPress = function() {
capt();
function capt() {
snap_dna = new BitmapData(305, 290);
snap_dna.draw(mc_dna);
var pixels:Array = new Array();
var w:Number = snap_dna.width;
var h:Number = snap_dna.height;
var a:Number = 0;
var dn:String = txt_Capt.text;
high = 99999;
low = 00000;
ran =
Math.floor(Math.random()*(Number(high)+1-Number(low)))+Number(low);
var rn:Number = ran
var filename:String = dn+rn;
for (var a = 0; a <= w; a++) {
for (var b = 0; b <= h; b++) {
var tmp = snap_dna.getPixel(a, b).toString(16);
pixels.push(tmp);
var captoutput:LoadVars = new LoadVars();
captoutput.img = pixels.toString();
captoutput.height = h;
captoutput.width = w;
captoutput.filename_dna = filename;
captoutput.send("save_dna.php", "_self", "POST");
stop();
I know it's a problem with the flash and not the PHP as I've
tested for that, definately in the flash. I just don't understand
how the same code can capture mc_modifysheep, but not mc_dna.
argh!!!
If you need to take a look at the FLA file it's up at
www.aegreen.co.uk/creativetech/dohumansdream.fla
Thanks everyone!!

If you dont find anything specific, a lot of the problems i
encounter like this are because one little thing is spelled wrong.
like it doesnt match whats in your php file, ect. my suggestion,
though a long one, if you know its supposed to work, and theres no
syntax error, re type it, not copy and paste, and just be careful.
keep tripple checking. you might not even find what was spelled
wrong, but it might fix the situation,

• Serious problem with text variables in table of contents

I posted this in the regular InDesign forum -- seems that there's no easy solution that would work well in a production environment (only suggestion was to convert the variables to text). However, thought I'd post it here to see if anyone on the scripting forum has a suggestion that might help:
Using InDesign CS4, when there is more than one text variable in a heading that is then included in a generated table of contents, the characters in the table of contents entry are scrambled. Is there a way to avoid this problem so that the table of contents entry has the same text as in the heading?

(This might also have been mentioned in your other thread:)
Text variables work great, but have one big basic flaw: the text cannot be broken. If you have a single text variable contents that's too wide for your text frame, all characters get squished together. I imagine this being even worse when you have two or more variables in a single paragraph. (Another big flaw is that you cannot include character formatting. Let's hope Adobe is working on it.)
You cannot "work around" this basic behavior with a script. The only thing you can do is convert the variables to text, which will de-variablize them (for want of a better word).
Other than using variables, you might want to use the regular Table of Contents feature (which is not "live" but needs updating after each change in the original document text), or perhaps Cross References, which can be used to pick up entire paragraphs.
