TextEdit "forgets" last folder

When I create a new document in TextEdit, it was always useful that it would open the "Save as" window in the folder I had last used in TextEdit.
I am not sure when or after what changes in my system, it just won't do that anymore: it always gets back to "documents" folder.
This change in behavior seems to be restricted to TextEdit - Pages, Numbers and Safari still show me the last folder used for saving.
I tested creating a new user account, and indeed it works as before, so the problem seems to be restricted to my main (administrator) user account.
Could anyone help me troubleshoot this issue?
Thanks a lot!

Since the issue is specific to your original user account, you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your new account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything on that other account's list from the original account's Preferences folder into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (one at time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting one. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.
The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.

  • Last Folder Position

    anyone know how to fix this? finder forgets last folder position!! i already trashed the finder plist and still no avail. no matter what program i am in - save as always goes to the user documents folder. i dont want that to happen! worked fine before the snow leopard update. please help!

    See if you have the problem in another account. Create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the Finder in this new account, if it work the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide. Either way we'll know what to troubleshoot.

    Bridge forgets the last folder I had open when I restart the computer and PS4/Bridge. What gives?
    Thanks Marv.

    Do you have the option checked "start Bridge automatically with startup"? If so disable it.
    I don't have CS4 but have read posts where many people are having the same problems you are. Auto start can be a real problem if reading from external drive, as Bridge may start before the computer determines if drive is connected.

  • How do I open last folder?

    I remember in earlier incarnations of the OS, I was able, I believe from the finder, to chose that I wanted to 'open last folder'. I can't find how to do that now, and when I want to open a particular folder, it goes back to a way earlier one, so I have to, each time, keep on selecting in the chain to get to the folder I was just in. So that's not very helpful. (Does that description help or confuse?)
    Okay, I'll try an example: Example: Open Folder 1>then open Folder 2>then open Folder 3>then finally open file A, and then the next time I just want file A, the same thing happens and I am directed to Folder 1 again. Aggravating. This happens in all my apps, by the way.
    Can anyone aid me with this?

    I'll try an example: Example: Open Folder 1>then open Folder 2>then open Folder 3>then finally open file A, and then the next time I just want file A, the same thing happens and I am directed to Folder 1 again.
    Most apps have an Open Recent (TextEdit) or a listing of recently opened files (MS Word and Excel) under their File menu. Use that.

  • Going back to the last folder while browsing music

    Hey.
    I don't know how comprehendable the subject was, but it's very hard to explain.
    Anyway, I copied my iTunes library from my PC to my new iMac, and I don't want to re-add all the music that's in my Library, because I want to keep all the plays. So, I have to manually right click on each song, manually locate the file, and then add it through there. I'm sure you know what I mean.
    However, it's annoying to have to browse all the way to the exact same folder each and every time I do this. Somehow, do not ask me how I did it, but I managed to make every time I browsed a new song it took me back to the last folder I was in, which made this a LOT less time consuming. I have no idea how I managed to do this, but alteast I know it's possible now.
    My question is, how do I make iTunes go back to the last browsed folder, when adding new songs like I mentioned? I want to fix my music once and for all, but it takes so much time doing it like this so I just can't find the strength.
    I'd appreciate any answer.

    Really need help with this, and sorry for bumping.

    Downloading images used to go automatically to the last folder used to save images, even when reopening Firefox. In just the past few days, possibly coinciding wih the most recent updates, the folder defaults to the 'Downloads' folder. This is most annoying. What happened? Internet Explorer 8.0 did the same thing. This was one of the reasons why I started using Firefox to download all images. I went into Tools>Options and it only lets me set another folder. I dont want to set a specific folder I want it to always go to the last folder used. So what gives?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == possibly when the most recent updates were installed, a few days ago

    Thanks jscher 2000. I guess I didn't make it clear. "It restarts with all the addons activated, and resumes with the tabs that were open before closing it." IE, it's running fine now with all the extensions activated. Everything is OK now.
    So something in the Firefox code was causing the bad behavior. It's not essential that I find out what the problem was - I'm just curious. And if anybody else has this same problem, it might be nice to have it corrected at the source.

  • Can't save files to Last Folder Used

    I'm scanning items with a Kodak iQsmart3, running under Kodak's oXYgen 2.6.1 scan application. Late last week, the application suddenly stopped saving files to the last folder used. Now I have to re-select the destination folder for each scan.
    I have rebooted the computer several times, and have also re-installed the scan application, but nothing helps the problem. It seems now that the problem may be with OS 10.4.11. I've searched and searched for a solution within the OS, but can't find anything that helps.
    Does anyone have a suggestion on how to proceed? Is there a place where you can check to see if the saving options can be changed?

    Thanks for your suggestion. However, I did as you advised and still cannot save files to the last folder used, as I used to be able to do.
    This is the first time in the 2 1/2 years I've been using this system that I've had any trouble with it. When I opened Disk Utility, it showed me the size and type of three different drives, all identical in manufacture. The first holds the Operating system, and the other two are set up in a Raid Striped set. I selected Macintosh HD under the name of the first drive, since that's the name of the disk on my desktop, and ran the Repair Permissions function, moving the recentitems.plist file to the desktop and rebooting, as per your instructions. Was that the proper area to use or should I have selected the disk description above that?

  • Saving PDF to last folder

    I have Adobe Reader X 10.0.0, PDF Version 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x). I have been saving PDF's for years, and each time I save, it goes to the last folder I saved to? The other day, I had approximately 15 PDF's that had been scanned to me, and after I had saved 5 of these documents normally, it then started going straight to a temporary folder, and has done ever since, which means I have to go through all the folders to get the one I desire? I have spoken to our I.T. department and they believe its a problem with PDF and not with our system, and I believe otherwise. I can use Recent Places, but when you have done the same thing for years, and the amount I do, change is not always good
    Has anyone encountered the same problem, and can help?

    Hi Kat,
    This is a bit geeky, but the signature appearance that you see on the page is not the signature, but just a graphical representation of the actual signature. The actual signature is a blob of hex encoded data in the PDF file that you don't really see. That aside...
    When you create a digital signature the first thing Acrobat/Reader will ask you to do is select a digital ID to sign with. Acrobat then reads the digital ID and amasses some information to use to create the signature appearance. It then fills in the form field (a signature field is just a special use form field) with the appearance, BUT the signature still hasn't been created. The next thing Acrobat does is asks you to Save the file to disk. This is more geekiness, but it much safer to compute the signature byte range on disk then it is in memory. The simple explanation is it's harder for the bad guys to manipulate the bytes on disk then it is for them to control the bytes in memory and because a digital signature provides document security we err on the safe side and require the file to be written to disk before the signature is created. The other safety item is, we want to sign the signature appearance so that someone can't come along later and modify the appearance without breaking the signature, so it (the appearance) has to be created before the signature proper is created.
    So at this point you've seen the signature appearance and thought that the signature has been created, but it hasn't. When you try to save to the network folder something is preventing Acrobat from saving the file and what ends up happening is the file is rolled back to the pre-signature state and the signature appearance is removed. The file is in essence untouched.
    All of that aside (which is probably more than you really wanted to know) the real question is why can't the file be saved to the network folder. This isn't really a digital signature issue, but rather a network permissions issue.

  • When I am prompted to choose a folder to save downloaded files to, why does 7.0 start the download browser in a random folder rather than the last folder saved to?

    When prompted to choose a destination folder for files that I am saving, I have found that 7.0 doesn't always open the file browser with the last folder I saved to. In previous versions, if I saved a jpg to a specific folder, it would open still directing me to that same folder the next time I was prompted. Now, if I am saving a string of images, there is no telling which folder the browser will be opened to when I am prompted. Very annoying to 1) have to figure out where I am in my filing system and 2) have to work my way through god knows how many folders to get back to where I saved the previous file ten seconds earlier. If this is some kind of smart feature that's making suggestions based on file source history or downloading patterns or whatever, can I turn it off? Here's hoping that you can help, because I really want this to be an easy fix rather than a bad version of your otherwise flawless program or worse yet a deteriorating hard drive.

    Firefox 11+ versions have support via <b>browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite</b> pref to disable to disable the feature to remember the download directory based upon the URL.<br />
    The browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref doesn't exist by default (it is hidden).<br />
    Create a new <b>Boolean</b> pref with the name <b>browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite</b> and set the value to false.
    You may have the clear the "Site Preferences" via Clear Recent History to remove already stored data.

  • Remember last folder location lost with Mac Lion updates

    Since Lion or Mountain Lion, we have had an annoying problem where the last folder location is not remembered in Illustrator. For example when updating links on multiple files, would like for the folder location to return to the last one used, but this would go to some folder 3 levels higher/
    Found
    http://www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX/
    fixes this. But hoping someone else has another solution as having to buy that for each computer would get costly for somethng that used to work. Also the software seems to not have bneen updated in a long time, adn don't wnat a solution that won't last.  Am on 10.8.2.

    how about this Mike, the file opening dialog is handled by the OS, if it still does not remember, I could manually try to code it to stay in a folder.
    select a couple of images before running, to test,
    #target Illustrator
    // script.name = relinkAllSelected_v2.jsx;
    // script.description = relinks each selected placed images one at the time;
    // script.required = select at least one linked image before running;
    // script.parent = CarlosCanto // 7/12/11;  version 2 - 07/25/13
    // script.elegant = false;
    var idoc = app.activeDocument;
    sel = idoc.selection;
    if (sel.length>0)
              for (i=0 ; i<sel.length ; i++ )
                       if (sel[i].typename == "PlacedItem")
                                var iplaced = sel[i];
                                var ifile = iplaced.file;
                                var file = File.openDialog ("Select file to replace " + ifile.name);
                                if (file!=null) // skip if user Cancels

  • How do I set Adobe Reader XI so that a saved pdf will be saved in the last folder saved?

    When I save a group of PDF files, I want them all saved in the same folder.  How do I configure so that each fille will be saved in the last folder that was used to save, rather than having to browse for the save folder each time?

    I am replying to my own question. I learned that if you right click when trying to open a PDF, you are asked which app you wish to use to open the file. If you click on Get Info, instead of choosing an app, you get this great information box which gives you the option to set Adobe Reader as your default app for PDF files. It even allows you to change all the pdf files you already have to Adobe Files. Yay.

  • Bridge CS4 does not open in last folder user

    Bridge does not open all of the time in the last folder used. It will open in a previous folder.
    Any ideas?

    You need to exit Bridge before shutting down for a return to your last folder.
    I think it should automatically exit when you shut down so you will return to the folder you were last using.
    This occurs when you have bridge set up to launch at start up, which is great in itself.
    CS4 bridge is so improved from CS3 in speed and reliability..thanks to Adobe!

  • Last Folder Opened

    I have searched this board to no avail. I am using Illustrator CS4 on Snow Leopard.
    My issue is when I place and image (or open just open a file through Illustrator) the dialog box takes me back to the hard drives root folder.
    Obviously this is quite annoying when placing several images, or saving files. I am not sure if this is an OS issue, or Illustrator. I do not have this issue with InDesign, though.... Any pointer would be appreciated.

    It takes me to the last folder I used through the place or open dialog.
    I would therefore suggest doing this
    1. Quit Illustrator.
    2.Go to User/username/Library/Preferences/ Adobe illustrator CS4 Settings and trash the settings folder, the whole folder not just the contents of the folder..
    3. Start Illustrator. Illustrator creates a new preferences file.
