Thank You, Steve

Dear Steve --
Thank you for offering to give us early IPhone adopters a $100 Apple Store credit. That is very kind of you because you have nothing to apologize for.
People buy electronic and other high-end purchases (like cars, furniture, cell phones, designer fashioins, TVs, etc) and then find within a few weeks, the product "on sale," tied to a rebate or other promotion. Rarely, does the company give prior purchasers the cost differences, especially those bought 60 days before.
I think some folks owe you and Apple an apologize for the childish rants on this site. I don't think they would be happy with anything you did except (1) give them the full $200 difference, (2) give them a free 8 gig IPhone if they chose to originally purchase a 4G -- as if for some reason it won't work any more or they didn't have that option in the first place -- or (3) all of the above.
I wonder what these people will demand when Apple announces an updated IPhone with new features, more storage or a different price as you inevitably will probably early next year?
I am an Apple customer, not an employee. In fact, I'm a pretty nontechnical customer, which is why I love Apple. Your products are not only cutting edge, but cool, fun and easy to use. I've enjoyed my IPhone and find it the best cell phone I've had. I really needed a phone -- mine was literally hanging on one screw -- and I hobbled along for 3 months until the IPhone came out. I have no regrets for purchasing it when it first came out. Being the center of attention was fun while it lasted.
Thanks for the $100 store credit. Again, that's what makes Apple so different from other companies -- you DO listen to your customers. I will using my credit to buy IWorks (which I had planned to but now can get it "free") and maybe an IPhone auto charger.
A Happy IPhone-Apple customer
PS -- Steve, let's see how I get flamed for my thank you note.

PPSS -- You don't even need to apologize for that Performa I bought as my first Apple computer. Heck, you weren't even with the company at the time!!!

I'm actually really happy with Steve's letter, as well as the rebate.
Of course, in this market, Apple had absolutely no legal, and **** near no ethical, responsibility to do that.
But it is we who make the market what it is; Companies offering services, but defined in our culture by their bottom line; and consumers, who often feel like sheep in pasture of price-points and profit margins.
As Mr. Jobs states, Apple enthusiasts (and, dare I say, Apple Fanatics) have a high expectation of Apple. They have grown accustomed to a high-touch, if slightly higher ticketed, line of products, which tend to foresee the customers' desires in the usage experience.
But there is also the Marketplace Experience; the sense of trust, which is fleeting, between consumer and company. In our marketplace, there is a growing expectation that mistrust will be part of the Marketplace Experience.
So kudos to both the complainers (particularly if the complaints were polite, but bewildered) and Apple.
The complainers, in the most notable show of dissatisfaction with a business decision in my memory, demanded a right to be a voice and be heard; to state what they can and can't abide in the Marketplace Experience. In a capitalism, this is necessary, and has been sadly lacking in our current marketplace.
Apple acknowledged to those same consumers that they had a point; while the price drop was aboveboard, and perfectly in their rights, they had an image to maintain; trust to maintain. And they felt the need to express, for once, why they made that particular decision from a modern business sensibility.
So, holy chao, we had a dialogue in the marketplace. In less than 24 hours. At the speed of light. Where the consumer got verbal, and the Company remembered what their bigger purpose, beyond profit, is; to serve the consumer what they want.
And a lot of us crave the trust between consumer and company that most of us Apple enthusiasts, the early-buying, hardcore fans, have had. In my case, that trust worked both ways; I did have some few experiences with Apple that were less than stellar, to say the least, but I trusted their products, their sensibilities, and understood that the market is sometime predatory, and I cut them slack on some of those issues, knowing that pushing the resistance to service was going to leave both parties angry and frustrated.
Well, this time, it happened to enough of the faithful at the same time, and, to tell the truth, because our market has devolved in consumer-orientation for some time, Apple had no responsibility to do bupkis.
But the kicker is that they did something. There will be those saying "It's not enough" and those who say "Why are you coddling those early-adopters?" (Of course, the answer to that should be simple to see for a company with a dedicated and enthusiastic fan-base.)
But the fact that a dialogue and compromise could be achieved so quickly, well, that's a testament to Apple and the consumer; they both recognized that they make the market what it is, and can make it better, since they can't expect it to be perfect.
Pretty neat moment for all involved, I think.

  • Thank you Steve Jobs

    I bought my first macbook and I absolutely love it, thank you Steve Jobs for making computer so easy and yes all those Mac Vs. PC ads are true, there is 100% not a single bloatware like all those Windows PCs do.

    This is my 3rd Apple notebook computer in approximately 10 years:o) I initially had a green "toilet seat", which I traded/upgraded for a 2003 Apple ibook G4. Just two days ago, I upgraded once again for a 2008 Apple macbook. The only minor problem that I ever had was with the ibook's trackpad, which Apple gladly and promptly repaired/replaced.
    Once you can get used to the differences(and applications) between Apple and Windows software, I think you'll find that Apple's are superior to the other computer/software companies.

  • Re, "Podcasts about Podcasting" area on itunes and thank you, Steve Jobs.

    Hi,
    I've just started my About.com Guide to Podcasting and was hoping to eventually be listed in this prestigious list of folks. Knowing that I'm a total "newbie," wondering if any of the iTunes folks/fellow podcasters have any advice about getting listed in this area?
    I also searched through the Technology Podcasts (as well as the podcasters on podcasting page) and couldn't find my show listed. Is this just because it's so young? I've heard you need to have four to five shows up before you're considered more than a flash in the pan.
    Tangent: In this first episode (at the end) I talk about how watching Steve Jobs present at last year's Apple conference (talking about latest iLife suite) transformed my adult life (obviously for the better!) Didn't know if anyone at Apple (PR folks, etc.) would be interested in hearing it, but I'd love their feedback. I'll have the podcast listed on the about.com site (front page of the podcasting channel) so I hope to have lots of listeners/subscribers.
    Thanks for the advice and best regards to all,

    Hi S,
    Thanks very much for your help. I'll keep on podding.
    Tangent: Do you have any MAC mail experts over there? For my about.com emails, people have said the "reply to" button says, "[email protected]" instead of "com" at the end. about says it's not on their end, and I've done the preferences/account checking thing multiple times. Any thoughts? If you could respond to: [email protected] that would be great because you might be able to see what's happening.
    Or here. Not sure what the protocol is, so thanks.

  • Thank you Steve; My Trust Restored

    Glad to know you do still care about your loyal fan base.
    I don't mind a price drop; $200 was just too much too fast.
    The $100 store credit sure takes the sting out of the bite.
    Thanks!

  • Thank You Steve Jobs and Apple, Inc.

    Just want these forums to now be flooded with praise for Apple's decision. It's not $200, but I never expected that. After all, we stood in line knowing that price drops would come, although we never expected such a drastic drop. A $100 gift card is a nice resolution to this situation, and my faith in Apple has been restored. I've already called customer service, of who I was on the line complaining to for most of the day, and filed a 'compliment' to thank Apple for addressing this issue and listening to their loyal fanbase. Please do the same. Cheers ~

    Why should you feel robbed?? You made the mistake of not spending a 100 more for twice the storage space! There is nothing wrong your phone, you made the decision at the counter to save yourself some dough and these are the repercussions . I believe that this by far the best pr contol that i've seen in a long time. The only unfortunate incident that i see is that now all you crybabies are going to expect apple to compensate you for every price drop in the future, causing them lose even more money. Why do you feel robbed? Are you going to expect a price difference when apple inevitably updates your laptops (probably the least expensive macbooks at that)?? If you do than you should not be a consumer of any sort.

    It sounds like you are looking for a program like Typinator.
    It isn't free, and the site doesn't specify compatibility with any OS above 10.7.
    As of today, the latest release is dated May 29th, 2012.

  • IMac either or has been remotely accessed, has malicious code, is hacked and/or all of the aforementioned or something that I have not yet researched. With my health issues, my Mac keeps me from thinking about the pain and disability I have. Thank you.

    Hello,
    I'm giving it one more chance and then Mac goes into trash. My iMac is either remotely accessed, perhaps malicious code, hacked and/or all of the aforementioned. I am not savvy in these areas. Please read some of the many symptoms and if you can assist me -- I am beyond grateful.  If you want to say it is my fault because I allowed somebody to use my computer or other nonsense please do not waste my time or yours. This is serious and has been going on for a period of time that is longer then I can remember!
    I have a neighbor, lives in my apartment building, 'had' physical access to my iMac.  Shortly after this I started to have problems that beyond any nightmare I have ever heard of - whether it be Windows or Apple!  Please feel free to ask me any question(s) that might help me rid my iMac of this malicious act as the police have been useless -- say they do not have equipment to check my Mac. FBI can't b bothered.
    It is more then clear that a person(s) has access and has messed up the OS, among other terrible things.  He took over my Facebook account months ago, posted as though he was me. He also prevented me from getting back into FB and Yahoo to close those connected accounts.  Went to an Apple store, under protection of their router and removed FB/Yahoo accounts.  The pages that were showing at home turned out to be fake pages controlled by him. (Think they are called "defaced").
    Anytime I did a 7X or zero out clean install -- he was there before I even hooked up the router!!!
    It came to a point that I can no longer even get to the erase/Utility/install from my apartment so I took it to Apple more then once. Besides erase/install, I turned off ALL Sys Preferences that could alert him to Mac. The last time I received a gray Install CD and was told to take it out of the building and do another erase/install.  There is no sense of going through this until I know if/how to get rid of him.
    Also when I first sign on I ALWAYS get a 192.168.100.11.  I do NOT have a router. I then go to System Preferences to Network and click "renew DHCP" several times before I get an IP addy!  I am not savvy in this area but do feel that this is a major clue.
    Passwords have been changed, master password is not something I can access which prevents me updating, etc., etc.
    I will not bombard you with every detail as that would take several pages. I am beyond desperate. Will be happy to provide further details to serious responders only.
    Thank you.
    'REQUIRE ASSISTANCE'
    Heartfelt sympathy to the many family members, friends, people who loved Steve Jobs even though they never met him -- RIP Steve. You are missed.

    If you really believe that your system has been compromised, here's what you do:
    Disconnect your Mac from your cable modem;
    Back up any documents on your system that are important to you;
    Boot your Mac from the system installation disks that came with it (insert the disk, restart your Mac, and hold down the "c" key until you get the "spinning gear" icon);
    Choose a language and click the arrow button to continue;
    From the Utilities menu, choose Disk Utility;
    In Disk Utility, select your computer's hard drive;
    Click the "Erase" tab;
    Click the "Security Options" button and select to have it overwrite all the data on the hard drive;
    Click the "Erase" button and allow it to process;
    Once the "erase process has completed (it will take a while), reinstall Mac OS X.
    Or, if this is too much for you to accomplish on your own, take your system to an Apple Store and have them help you perform these steps. If your system was indeed compromised, this will remove any such hack. You can then set up a new user account for the computer, reinstall your applications (reinstall only from original disks or downloads from the company making the software) and documents, and reconnect to the Internet.
    Note that when you reconnect to the cable modem, you may still get an IP address starting with 198. This is normal with some cable modems and probably not a cause for concern. It will not be an indication that your system is still compromised; that will not be possible if you perform all the above steps.
    Regards.

  • When will the problem of Window Media Player Plug-in for every upgrade be ever resoled? It's getting VERY IRRITATING with every upgrade. Thank you.

    With every upgrade, be it 3 or 4 and even the coming 5, many videos will hang that requires the Windows Media Player Firefox Plug-in or the LATEST Adobe Flash Player. Most plug-ins are compatible BUT not these two. Otherwise things will go smoothly.
    Thank you.

    1. Plugins aren't Mozilla's responsibility. Microsoft is responsible for the WMP plugin, which doesn't look like it is even installed in the Firefox you posted here with. You don't have the latest version of Adobe Flash AFAIK, but that is Adobe's responsibility, not Mozilla's.
    2. As far as Firefox version numbering, Firefox 4.o0 hasn't even been released yet and not even a tentative release date has been mentioned for Firefox 5.0.
    Quite honestly, WMP isn't usually that big of a problem, but Flash is very problematic - enough that Steve Jobs has it banned from iOS which runs the iPhone, iPad, and deluxe iPod (whatever it's called). HTML5 is probably going to eliminate the need for the Flash Player in a few years; good riddance to bad rubbish, IMO.

    >> then I get a completely blue screen.
    That probably means that you're not looking at a bug in Photoshop, but a problem with a driver - and the most likely cause would be your video card driver.
    And sure enough, your video card driver is almost 2 years out of date.
    Please go to NVidia's website and get the latest driver - then follow their directions for installation (so you don't get bits of old driver left over).

    I followed your instructions and installed Developer Suite 10G on Windows Vista Home Premium edition. I have Oracle 11G DB running on the same machine.
    Two points, Steve:
    1. When I tried to set the maximum virtual memory to 6110 an error message displayed from Windows and told me that I can't set the maximum virtual memory to more than 4096. I set it to 4090 and it worked and I got nothing wrong during the installation process.
    2. After installing JInitiator and disabling Java on Firefox I called the http://127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet page and everything seemed to be OK because the Oracle Forms Services logo appeared and then a successful installation message appeared , but as I clicked (ok) to continue a gray screen appeared inside the browser (like the one displayed when you try to run a Java applet inside a browser) and then I wait to death till something appears but sadly nothing. I just get a blank gray screen inside my Firefox browser.
    Do you have any idea what to do to solve the problem?

    I'm running OS X 10.4.11 on my PowerMac, and cannot retrieve email.  Does this have to do with iCloud?  I also cannot upgrade my operating system as my computer won't accept it.  Any information about this for me? Thank you!

    Hi Steve,
    If this is dot mac or Mobile me you can still use IMAP eMail in the iCloud.
    Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
    MAKE A NEW ACCOUNT - DO NOT TRY TO ALTER YOUR EXISTING ACCOUNT.
    I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
    You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
    iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
    On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
        •    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 993
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
        •    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 587
        •    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
    Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...
