The best way to distribue att Swing Application?
How can I do this?
If I give it out in .class format only them with J2SE will be able to run it..
how do you do it?
Tanx for any help!
Hi,
it depends on how you distribute your Swing
application. If you distribute it on CD, then include
a JRE on the CD.
Or you could try to convince or attract your users to
download the latest JRE themselves before the first
usage of your application.
If you distribute your application through the web,
put two buttons on a HTML page, one linking to a JRE
download (with some installation instructions before
the start of the download), the second button being a
JavaWebStart button for your swing application.
Or you could use InstallAnywhere and bundle JRE and
application into an installer.

What is the best way to distribute your swing application:
I have developed a application that connects to data base and it containes the functionality to manage the invoices and receipts system, but i am scare to distribute it by building it to jar using the netbeans build option , it runs fine but when i extract the jar file back i m scare that any one can easily decompile it using JAD and get the database credentials , please tell me the best way to distribute the application so that reverse engineering the application will not be possible please tell me that :(
Decompiling is unnecessary. All somebody would have to do would be to sniff the transmissions between your application and your database; the credentials are sent unencrypted.
So the problem is not that somebody could find out the database credentials, the problem is that your database exposes itself to the internet. And if anybody does find the credentials through any method at all, then you've got a problem.
And by the way if you distribute your application with the credentials hard-coded, then that makes it difficult for you to change the password if it does get compromised, because then nobody can use your application any more. This is a bad thing because one of the first things you should do when your system is compromised is to change the access password.
So really the best way to distribute this application would be to write it so that it connects to an application which runs on your server. This server application would communicate with the database, which would make it unnecessary for the database to be visible from the internet. Your Swing application would communicate with the server application via some kind of web service protocol. -
What is the best MVC approach for designing Swing application
Hi...
I am designing an client/server application. In this I am using java swing for the front-end development. We decided on using MVC approach for the front-end design. I found that there are more than one approachs for designing in MVC.
Which is the best way to model. To create your model taking View into consideration or Creating the Model taking the tables into consideration.
Can anybody give help me out in this this is urgent. Thanks
saiI'm not sure what you are asking, so I'll just ramble a bit and hope it helps.
Create your model taking the view and the data into consideration. :-)
Design a class to hold instances of the rows in your database that correspond (more or less) to the structure of the data. Add any needed methods to that data object to support the data that you might need for the view.
For example, suppose your database stores a name in two columns (firstname and lastname). You pull that data from the database into a collection of Person objects into your model. Your Person class has two fields (and set/get methods) to hold that data. Now, in your view, you want to display the name as one string, so add a method to the Person object to get the full name (just by concatenating the two data elements).
You have to take everything into consideration. How you are going to view the data as well as how it might be structured. -
What is the best way to deploy a java application ??
Hi,
I have a question about "deploying" a java application on to a weblogic server.
Please advise me how to automate in a best way to Deploy 10 different applications(.ear/.war) to 10 different Clusters(containing 40 Managed servers) in wls6.1......and that too in a Production environment.
I know of using Weblogic Console OR the "deploy" utility to do so ......BUT if i have like 100 clusters .....then i would have to "deploy" 100 times ......
is there any way that we can BEST AUTOMATE this process.
Thanks a lot.
-sangitaHELLO!!! WELCOME BACK!! I THINK YOU SHOULD USE
deploy....Hey Thanks.
is there any network congestion OR any other problem that i can anticipate before i use "deploy" utility. I have heared of some problems(i couldn't remember them now ....because honestly, i couldn't understand them atall when a BEA consultant told me those...).
so, any problem that may arise ....that i need to think about before deploying ~10 applications to like ~70-80 clusters ....all at a time.
thanks again for your advise. iam learning to see the big picture of application deployment.
-sangita -
I seen suggestions like making a registry entry, or making an entry in the application specific settings file. But what's the best practice? I want to do some custom tasks if that is a first run.
Also, I am deploying my application using per machine MSI installer. So un-installation not deleting the user specific config files that's get created under AppData.
Thanks PrasadHello,
Whenever possible I prefer to avoid the registry. The following works once per user where we see if a specific folder exists or not, if it does not then do first time initialization work then set a setting in the project which causes a user config file to
be written to the location for storing user settings per user.
You first need to create a setting in the project, in this case I did
var config = ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(ConfigurationUserLevel.PerUserRoamingAndLocal);
string configPath = config.FilePath.Replace("\\user.config", "");
if (System.IO.Directory.Exists(configPath) )
Console.WriteLine("This is not the first time");
else
// Do one time setup here
Properties.Settings.Default.FirstTimeValue = "1";
Properties.Settings.Default.Save();
Console.WriteLine("This was the first time");

What is the best way to deploy application that uses web services?
Hi all,
I'm having some problems figuring out the best way to deploy our app now that we've switched over to using web services.
I'm fairly new to Java and web services. From what I understand, JNLP and WebStart are methods to deploy Java clients to users and not for creating war files and the like.
Here's a little background:
We have a large PowerBuilder/Oracle application. The db consists of over 500 tables and the client consists of several thousand PB components. A user creates "transactions" which contain a series of "sub-transactions" within. Most of the data is collected and stored locally in the client in a series of datastores. When the "finalize" happens, the records are validated and sent to the database.
We are in the process of moving each of the subtransactions (currently in the PB client) into subPROCESSES on a java project. We are using the JAX-WS framework to develop the web services in Netbeans. These web services aren't much more than remote xml as the messaging technology. For writing data back to the database, we are using the Java Persistence API to function outside of an EJB container but will shortly be migrating to the Glassfish application server to use several of the EJB container frameworks including the EntityManager.
We haven't attempted any type of deployment and are unsure of where to start. Any suggestions would be so helpful and appreciated!
Thanks!

It is for launching rich client GUI based (AWT, Swing, SWT..) applications onto the end-user's desktop.
There are some parts of JWS that might seem peripherally useful to the installation of a web-app., but it is really not a 'good fit'.

What is the best way to use Swing GUIs in an MVC design?
I have a question on how to build an application using swing frames for the UI, but using an MVC architecture. I've checked the rest of the forum, but not found an answer to my question that meets my needs.
My application at this stage presents a login screen to get the userid and password, or to allow the user to choose a new locale. If an Enter action is performed, the userid and password are checked against the DB. If not accepted, the screen is repainted with a "try-again" message. If the Cancel action is performed, the process stops. If a locale action is performed, the screen is repainted with different langauge labels. Once the login process is passed, a front screen (another swing frame) is presented.
Implementation: I am using a session object (Session, represents the user logging in) that calls the Login screen (LoginGUI, a Swing JFrame object with various components). Session uses setters in LoginGUI to set the labels, initial field entries etc, before enabling the screen. From this point, the user will do something with the LoginGUI screen - could be closing the window, entering a mix of userid and password, or maybe specifying a locale. Once the user has taken the action, if required, the session object can use getters to retrieve the userid and password values entered in the fields.
The crux of the problem is 1) how will Session know that an action has been taken on the LoginGUI, and 2) how to tell what action has been taken.
This could be solved by getting LoginGUI to call back to Session, however, I am trying to buid the application with a good separation of business, logic and presentation (i.e MVC, but not using any specific model). Therefore, I do not want LoginGUI to contain any program flow logic - that should all be contained in Session.
I am aware of two possible ways to do this:
1. Make LoginGUI synchronised, so that Session waits for LoginGUI to send a NotifyAll(). LoginGUI could hold a variable indicating what has happened which Session could interrogate.
2. Implement Window Listener on Session so that it gets informed of the Window Close action. For the other two actions I could use a PropertyChangeListener in Session, that is notified when some variable in LoginGUI is changed. This variable could contain the action performed.
Has anyone got any comments on the merits of these methods, or perhaps a better method? This technique seems fundamental to any application that interfaces with end-users, so I would like to find the best way.
Thanks in advance.Hi,
I tried to avoid putting in specific code as my question was more on design, and I wanted to save people having to trawl through specific code. And if I had any school assignments outstanding they would be about 20 years too late :-). I'm not sure computers more sophisticated than an abacus were around then...
Rather than putting the actual code (which is long and refers to other objects not relevant to the discussion), I have put together two demo classes to illustrate my query. Comments in the code indicate where I have left out non-relevant code.
Sessiondemo has the main class. When run, it creates an instance of LoginGUIdemo, containing a userid field, password field, a ComboBox (which would normally have a list of available locales), an Enter and a Cancel box.
When the Locale combo box is clicked, the LoginGUIdemo.userAction button is changed (using an ActionListener) and a property change is fired to Session (which could then perform some work). The same technique is used to detect Enter events (pressing return in password and userid, or clicking on Enter), and to detect Cancel events (clicking on the cancel button). Instead of putting in business code I have just put in System.out.printlns to print the userAction value.
With this structure, LoginGUIdemo has no business logic, but just alerts Sessiondemo (the class with the business logic).
Do you know any more elegant way to achieve this function? In my original post, I mentioned that I have also achieved this using thread synchronisation (Sessiondemo waits on LoginGUI to issue a NotifyAll() before it can retrieve the LoginGUI values). I can put together demo code if you would like. Can you post any other demo code to demonstrate a better technique?
Cheers,
Alan

-sangitaThanks Tommy. but i would like to know a very important point here: this is using
the weblogic.utility that you just talkd about.
Suppose iam having an ADMIN server that has say 10 clusters and 50 managed servers
underneath to take care.
1 cluster each = 5 managed server
now iam deploying a simple .war file to say a single managed server, i have found
out that it takes a looot of time to get the application deployed.
what do you say about this situation ?
what is the best approach ??????

To deploy the application from the command prompt in WebLogic 6.1 you
use the
following command
$JAVA_HOME/bin/java -cp $WL_HOME/weblogic.jar weblogic.deploy -port $WEBLOGIC_PORT
-host $WL_HOST_IP $WEBLOGIC_CMD $WEBLOGIC_PWD -component $WL_Server_NAME:$WL_Server_NAME
$WL_APPLICATION_NAME YourApplication.war
$WEBLOGIC_CMD sould be DEPLOY for the first time deployment and UPDATE
for redeployment
For deploying in a cluster you better create a shell script which call
the above
command with different cluster ip address as a parameter.

For 6.1, it's probably not a huge win to use ant. It's up to you.

Rob, do you still consider or suggest using ANT for deploying say

do you see any advantages using [ANT + weblogic.deploy]..... over

fundamentally it's just a wrapper around weblogic.Deployer

....can
i use ANT

If you have Downloaded and Upgraded to Lion See...
Here is an excerpt of the SLA; the Lion license (purchased from MAS) is NOT transferable. The SLA is quite clear:
B. If you obtained your license to the Apple Software from the Mac App Store or on Apple-branded physical media, it is not transferable. If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to athird party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple-branded hardware beforedoing so, and you may restore your system to the version of the Apple operating systemsoftware that originally came with your Apple hardware (the “Original Apple OS”) andpermanently transfer the Original Apple OS together with your Apple hardware, provided that:(i) the transfer must include all of the Original Apple OS, including all its component parts,printed materials and its license; (ii) you do not retain any copies of the Original Apple OS, fullor partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (iii) the partyreceiving the Original Apple OS reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of theOriginal Apple OS license.

Boot from the original OS installer disk and do an Erase & Install.
When the Mac reboots into Mac Setup Assistant Quit and shut it down.

Best RegardsHi AJ,
Nice PDF !
Though the PDF does give a basic idea as to how we can go about the deployments using ANT and EM in Test and Prod, it doesn't really give extensive details. For eg. ANT would obviously need huge ANT scripts to be written for migrations to multiple Test servers, etc.
Similarly, when we talk about EM, does it mean each of the services has to be manually deployed on Production ?
I am sure we would be looking more towards a fully automated solution. No ?
