My four year old iMac has developed horizontal lines and gradations of gray over the last month. Is my machine on its way out? Is there anyway to fix the display?

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing.

The simplest way, is to erase the drive and reinstall the OS X.

Other than that, you will have to trash all your User files, delete all the photos from within iPhoto and then empty the trash.

The screen on my MacBook Pro Retina has horizontal lines and a flicker every few seconds this happened after  this weeks Airport Utility 6.3 upgrade.

    Hi John,
I would take your machine into a Apple service center. Its highly likely a hardware issue. The most likely issue being the display has failed. If there is no external damage to the machines display they will replace the whole display under warranty for you.

  • Help, my 3+ year old iMac has a fried logic board

I have an iMac G5 PPC 1.8GHz 20". Within the past year or so Apple replaced the power supply as my serial# fell under the G5 Repair Extension Program. It was working fine until recently when the screen would lock up and require reboots. Now it will not even boot up. I took it back to the Apple Store and was told it had a bad logic board. The tech showed me the bulging capacitors. The estimate for the repair is a whopping 600+ bucks.
I am very reluctant to invest that much dough when I was already thinking of selling this one and buying a new Intel based iMac. Besides, I need the money for gasoline for the next week! I thought I could attempt the repair myself until I found I could not get the part any cheaper than what Apple was going to charge.
This really bugs me as I've had the computer for just over 3 years. Any ideas on what I should do? Try to sell the remaining good parts? Can it even be used as a monitor? The display is still in fine shape. Hard drive is good too (250G). Thanks in advance.

My nearly 3 year old iMac died a couple months ago and after jumping through some hoops to get the date of purchase reset to what it should've been, I took my iMac in to a local service provider to get it fixed under the repair extension program.
I was then told when they diagnosed my computer that the logic board and power supply were both dead and needed replacing. When I brought up the repair extension program I was told that it only covered the power supply and not the logic board.
Should I contact Apple Customer Relations or should I go back to the people who diagnosed my computer and plead my case with them?
P.S The serial number of my computer falls into the range posted on the Repair Extension Program for the Video and Power Issues page, so I'd imagine my computer qualifies since it isn't 3 years old yet.
    Thanks

  • 3 years old A100-001: horizontal lines when playing games

    Dear Everyone!
I have a Satellite A100-001 notebook, almost 3 years old, with 3 GB memory ram, nVidia GO 7600 256 MbRam VGA with rather fresh (6 months old) Windows 7 Professional 32 bit OS.
I use my notebook every day, mostly for work or gameplaying. I never had a problem (and this is why I love Toshiba) until yesterday: when I play, after a few minutes (5-10-15 at most), the screen turns stripped with horizontal lines, and freezes down. Like I said, I never had a problem before.
I don't really know what happened. Could anyone tell me a solution?
I've been thinking of the loss of temp control. I don't really think that the VGA card died (or at least, I hope).
    Thanks for you support!

    Hi
Hmm the lines on the notebook screen could be related to the graphic chip issue but you should connect an external monitor to be 100% sure that this is a vga related issue and not notebooks monitor problem
But in my opinion its vga issue possibly the graphic chip starts to malfunction due to a higher temperature while gaming what do you think about this theory?
I think you use this notebook long time and maybe the cooling fans dont work properly due to the dust. How about cleaning the cooling module?
Try an compressed air spray. Such tool helps to get rid of dust and debris
    Good luck

  • Is there a way I can auto fix the red eye in all photos in my library, rather than fixing each individual photo seperately?

    Hi,
I have lightroom 5 which I use to edit photos taken using a ringflash around my canon 60D. The ringflash causes subjects in the photos to have red eye. Is there a way you can auto correct the red eye over all the photos you import rather than using the tool to edit each individual photo separately?
    Cheers,

    The short answer is: no.
And I don't *think* there is a longer answer - but maybe somebody knows better..

  • How can i install a windows version 8 on a 3 year old iMac 27 (only windows and nothing else not via bootcamp = result shut be a clean iMac with windows - no

Some of the problem is that i dont understand the thing which bin told when you go to bootcamp for a user of mac's since the model was the "classic" and we make newspapers on them - so i want and easy way to have and mac computer for my self (the new one) and let my daugter have a beutiful imac with windows on.

If you don't want Boot Camp and you don't want a virtual machine, go buy a Windows computer.
Both Boot Camped Windows and Windows running in a virtual machine work well. Your issues are because of your lack of knowledge or understanding, not because Boot Camp and virtual machines are poor products. Universities, large and small businesses, home users, etc. use virtual machines to run their operating systems.
Your statements about Boot Camp and Parallels are not the experience of thousands of users.
Either find someone who is knowledgeable about running Windows on Apple computers to help you or buy a Windows computer. Believe me, if you find a way to install only Windows on your Apple computer without using Boot Camp or a virtual machine you will have more problems than what you have already experienced.

  • 6 year old iMac resurrected but why and how

I apology if this is in the wrong forum but I am lost.
    Rudimentary? Obvious? Does everyone know?
Fall of 2000 purchased an iMac DV+ according to sales slip...
    added OS 9.1
Have an iMac and a eMac in the same room but different wall outlets.
(The eMac is used for this posting.)
In the spring of 2006 there was a power interruption during the
    night.
In the morning the eMac restarted by pushing the on/off button.
    iMac did not restart.
Would press the power on button - the “chimes” sounded and
the screen remained dark. A sound like Canola oil hitting a hot
skillet came from the area of the on button. (Sounded like
    electricity arcing.)
Put the iMac in the basement. Would try restarting it now and
    then and no luck.
Went down the other night & plugged in the iMac.
Held down the command key as the iMac was turned on.
    The iMac worked. Why?
When you get reach your 80th decade in life and have no heirs ---
(but errors) you can waste time and money.
Post script: Seems that there have been circuit breakers tripped at
times while the iMac was used.
Also, there are many correspondents in these forums that appear to

but don’t understand any of it.
    eMac PowerPC G4 (3.3)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Many of the parameters that make your Mac a joy to use on a daily basis are stored in parameter RAM, along with a map of what-hardware-is-where inside this Mac. Parameter RAM is maintained by an "always-on" power supply, and backed up by a battery.
When you have a power failure, or pull the plug to move or service your older Mac, and the backup battery is low, corruption can creep into the parameters. This often leads to no display, or the flashing question mark display (can't find the system to boot from).
When the battery voltage drops lower, different things may happen to the parameter RAM. (For example, it may be cleared rather than just corrupted.) This can change what happens when you try to power on. YOU did not change anything, but the battery inside your Mac has changed.
Please challenge us when there is too much jargon! I know there are many more readers than posters, so I try not to talk above people's heads, but I do not always recognize it when it happens.
And I will do the same. What's a curmudgeon?

  • HT201412 My Ipad quit working - it's 2 years old.  I called Apple and they basically told me that it's done.  I can pay 249.00 to get a reburbished Ipad 1, or buy a new one.  I want to know why it died?  They mentione it could be the hard drive.

My Ipad 1 quit working after 2 years.  Was never dropped, abused, etc.  Just quit the other night.  Went to the Apple store, called the support line and they tell me that since the warranty is up I can pay 249.00 for a refurbished Ipad or buy a new one.  Not happy at all.  I want to know why it quit.  The person I talked to at Support says he doesn't know what happened.  He says it sounds like my hard drive crashed.  ANyone else have this problem?  I am so mad.

If the tech you talked to said anything about a "hard drive", he was completely ignorant or misspeaking rather badly. The iPads have no hard drive; the storage is all solid state. You may wish to talk to another technician, or make an appointment at an Apple Store if there's one near you, and confirm the diagnosis of a hardware failure.
If you've confirmed that it is indeed a hardware failure, then you can pay the replacement price, find an independent iPad service shop and see if they can do a repair for less, or buy a new iPad. If it were me I would put the money toward a new, or at least newer, iPad rather than pay the replacement charge. You can get some good deals on refurbished iPad 2 and third-generation iPads from the Apple Store, any of which will run the most current versions of iOS, something which the first-gen iPad will not, and would come with a full warranty (which could be extended to two years with AppleCare).
As to why your iPad failed, it's impossible to say with any certainty. The circuitry could have had a tiny flaw that finally failed, or the iPad could have received a static shock, something quite common in many areas in the winter when the air is dry.  Sorry it happend to you, but anything can fail.
    Regards.

  • My 5-year old iMac is freezing up and will not reboot unless it is turned off for an hour or so.  What is going on?

After some heavy lifting ( backing up or working in several applications) the system will slow down to a crawl and then freeze.  A hard shutdown and restart will usually not reboot it.  I typically get a white screen with a floder with a ? mark on it, a circle with a line through it, an Apple logo with a spinning wheel for many hours (I let it go overnight once to no avail), or a simple white screen.   The disk checks out fine with Drive Genius and disk usility, from both the hard disk (when I can get it running) and from the Disk utilite and Drive Genius Disks.    I have erased (zeroed out) the disk and reinstalled Snow Leopard several times with all updates.  Reparied permissions successfully.  It runs swimmingly until I start loading up files and try to use them or tao back up to Time Machine on a Time Capsule.   It will then repeat the whole scenario.   Often, If I leave it shut down for an hour or two, or overnight, it will boot fine, even after all of the prior white screens.
I have taken it to the Genius Bar a coupole of times, and they have done a system reinstall and analysis to no avail.   Everything looks fine.  Infact, ast time it had rested and while it did not boot before I left, it did fine there.
The only devices connected are an ethernet cable, bluetooth mouse, and keyboard.  What's up?
I think this is a hardware not a software issue.

BankerDad, let's see if we can change this device's behavior. Is there any physical or liquid damage on that device? Connect it to a charger to see if the charging battery icon populates on the screen. Keep us posted.

  • Why am I not able to type into my pdf files. Why is the cursor only appearing at he areas where there in no typing? I believe I know who's doing this, but can you fix the problem for me please?

I cannot type into one of my pdf files. The cursor only appears where there is no typing. I believe there is foul play going on on my computer, Can you fix this problem?

    Hi Donna,
Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this mystery! I hope it's not foul play.
You say the problem is with just one of your PDF files? What version of Acrobat/Reader are you using? If you're in Reader, you're limited to commenting/annotating the PDF (you can't edit text with Reader, so you wouldn't be able to select text that's in the PDF already).
Please let me know what program/tools you're using and we can take it from there.
    Best,
    Sara

  • My 6 year old iMac is freezing frequently and I have random weird display spots - any suggestions?

I'm having issues with my desktop Mac - I took it to apple and they ran a diagnostic and said it was fine.  The screen has frequently appearing inconsistencies like weird little sections of random colors and now the whole thing is freezing frequently.  I have approx 60 gb free and I'm running 10.7.3 with no odd software or especially labor intensive programs other than iPhoto.
Any ideas are more than welcome!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List

  • I have CS4 (Windows) and now have a Mac computer, is there any way I can download to the Mac?

Does anyone know if there is a way to download my Windows CS4 to my recently purchased IMac.

No. you are long past any upgrade and platform swap eligibility. You can only buy a new license or sign up for CC. It's a moot point, anyway. There are serious compatibility issues with CS4 on OSX 10.10, so it would be nothing but trouble.
