The file disappears!

Hi,
I have been putting links to jar files on my website, and I just decided to use java web start because Internet Explorer tries to download jars as zip files.
Here are the directions I found on the site:
http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Programming/jnlp/
First, create the JAR file:
jar cf JNLPTime.jar TheTime.class
Second, create a key in the keystore (or use one you already have). You'll be prompted for information like first name and last. You should at least fill in that information.
keytool -genkey -keystore myKeys -alias jdc
Third, sign the JAR. Be sure to remember your password from the previous step.
jarsigner -keystore myKeys JNLPTime.jar jdc
I followed these steps, and everything seemed to go well, but after the thrid step I could not find a javawebstart or jnlp file. Where did it go?

For JWS few things need to be done
First compile, jar, and sign your source code. Do not forget to specify main class in the manifest while jaring. You will need to sign other libraries/jars that you are using ( I might be wrong here)
Second, create .jnlp file. This file will tell users' webstart component how to run your application, things like java versions supported by your application, memory to use, jars to download, parameters like input files or other things.
Third put your .jnlp and your jars main jar ie one with class containing main method, and other helper jars/libraries on the server. Give appropriate permissions to the .jnlp and the jars.
From your question, it seems that you have created the jar but not the .jnlp file as mentioned in the previous reply.
Hope this helps.

I tried to rename a file, it gave me an error message (can't remember the number - 43??) and then the file disappeared from the original folder. When I do a search, the file comes up under the new name, but it does not show a path, and even though preview shows the contents, I can't open the document (Powerpoint) and I can't move the document. I tried "Copy" and paste but it doesn't work. I tried "Share" with Airdrop and iChat, but the file is inaccessible. When i try to rename the file, it says the filename is too long.
When I try to open it, it says the alias is not good, and asks if I want to fix the alias. I'm afraid to do that and lose all access to this document.
Right now, it feels like a ghost document - it is on the computer intact, but it is in an undisclosed location and inaccessible.
Please help!!

I was able to resolve this by repairing permissions, even though no permissions error was listed specifically for that file.
I could also have recovered it through Time Machine, but I'm interested in knowing how not to have this happen again!
I was afraid of rebooting and possibly losing track even of the ghost.
I did not try EasyFind - I'll keep that in mind next time.
Thanks for all the comments.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
If you mean you deleted the files from Pages on your phone whilst using iCloud, then yes they will disappear from Pages on your iPad too.
If you simply deleted the app from your phone, if you were using iCloud then they should not have disappeared from your iPad.
It's not clear from your post, which of these you did.

• Files disappear when creating a new folder

I'm new to mac....got a macbook this week. I'm in Iraq so I have very limited access to anything. No internet for my mac at the moment...so I can't update even if there are ones. I assume I have the currenct version of everything though. The question...
While switching over my files I decided to reorganize them. I'm working on my external HD and creating many new folders for all my files. On numerous occasions now (4) I have created a new file the standard way...right click>new>file...then named it. On these occasions I have done this it has renamed the previous file I had worked in (even though it was not selected) and then the contents of the file disappeared. This leaves me with the new file I created and another identical file of the same name...now with nothing in it. Some of my files I have backed up, but the last one deleted many videos that I didn't. Happens randomly at no particular time. If I select the file and view its contents often it will briefly change its name back to the original name, but still nothing in it. Then next selection of anything will switch it back. Have not been able to fine the files anywhere. Tired of losing my files. Any ideas??? Thanks.

Hi Craig and Welcome to Apple Discussions....
First of all, thank you for all you are doing. It's so appreciated! Just be safe and come home soon.
Now... I have a feeling your external hard drive is the culprit. Read here:
Changing the names of items
You can easily change the name of a file, folder, or disk on your computer.
IMPORTANT: To avoid problems using Mac OS X or applications on your computer, don't move or change the names of folders that came with your system (such as the Library folder or your home). You should also not change the names of applications or items associated with specific applications. If you accidentally change the name of an installed item and you experience problems, you can change the name back.
Locate the item you want to rename on your desktop or in a Finder window.
Click the item to select it, then click the name. The name is highlighted and you will be able to edit it.
Type the new name and press Return.
Some document names have a file extension, such as ".txt" or ".jpg." If you change the name of a file and delete the extension, some applications may no longer recognize the file. To ensure the file can be recognized by the application that created it, change only the part of the name that comes before the extension, or open the file using the appropriate application, then save the file with a new name.
You cannot change the name of an item in the Finder window's sidebar. You must locate the item on your desktop or in a Finder window to highlight and change the name.
And more here:
Getting information about files and folders
You can view and modify information about files, applications, and volumes in the Info window. This information can include:
Comments that Spotlight can search on
Who can view and modify the item.
The applications that can open it.
Metadata that describes a file's contents and how it was created. For example, a photo's Info window may contain the picture's dimensions, exposure time, and the make and model of the camera.
To see information for one or more items, select the items and choose File > Get Info. An Info window opens for each selected item.
To see a summary of information about several items, select the items then hold down the Control key as you choose File > Get Summary Info. A window summarizes information on all selected items, including their total size.
To see information about each item as you select it, select one of the items then hold down the Option key as you choose File > Show Inspector. An Inspector window displays information on the selected item. When you select another item, the Inspector's contents are replaced with information on that item.
I realize that's a lot to digest and your time might be limited. This is something that only takes a few minutes and might help immediately.
Go to MacintoshHD/Applications/Utilities and locae Disk Utility. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left and then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Depending on the size of your drive, it should only take a few minutes. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility from the Menu.
Here's how to find out exactly which Mac OS you are running. Click the Apple logo top left of your screen then click, About This Mac. A pane will open. Just under "Mac OS X" will be the version number. ie., 10.4.x
Reboot your MacBook and see if this helps.... I'm retired and have time... if you need one on one help e-mail me: [email protected]
It's the least I can do

• Deleted Files disappeared from external drive but space is still occupied ( iMac )

Hello all...
I have this problem.
Whenever I delete items from my external hard drive, using iMac (running mavericks), the files disappear from the drive window but their space will be still occupied. if i format the drive using my mac, everything will disappear & the whole drive capacity would be available for use.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Luk

Unless you empty the trash while the external is attached, the files will remain in the trash. You will gain back your space after you empty it.

• Mac Os 10.8.2 file Disappear !

Hi every body,
i downloaded Mac OS 10.8.2 from AppStore and it was Ok... the file was about 4.5GB, and i installed it and i am now running 10.8.2..
The probelm is : After downloading and installing it, the file DISAPPEARed ! ... i searched it every where .... No file found...
Although, before downloading it, i read that "i can install it for many machineS" ....
What is the problem ??
Thanks for any help

1--> is there a way to recover it now from my Hard disk ??...
Not one that I would bother with. Data recovery is a tricky thing, as deleted files can be overwritten, which destroys them utterly. An installer as big as this one is almost certainly not still intact after using the computer for a little while.
2--> when downloading it from another machine. do i have to pay again ?!
No, you simply log in to the App Store using the same Apple ID you purchased Mountain Lion with and re-download from your Purchased list.

• Drag and drop, like magic the files just vanish!

Ever since upgrading my mid 2009 MacBook Pro to Lion, I have been having trouble copying or moving files by dragging them. I especially seem to have trouble dragging files to the desktop...  I drag them there, but they just vanish without a trace.  I also don't seem to be able to option-drag a file to make a copy of it... I drag it to a new location and it just vanishes completely.  This is driving me mad.  Anyone else having this issue?
I've run a permission repair a few times, but it's made no difference.  Any ideas?

I pasted this in answer to another thread but will post again here:
Yes I have had this problem on both my iMac and MBA. It was driving me mad! Can import files to applications like Lightroom and export but trying to copy files to another location through Finder and the files disappeared after appearing to copy.
Solution is to Force Quit Finder and Relaunch. I then rebooted and all is now fine.
Another solution I read is to paste this in Terminal:
killall Finder && open /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app
Hope this helps others.

• Desktop files disappeared (advanced user)

Hello,
Main Problem:
While working (though not specifically while I was watching, ie: I was cycling through firefox, acrobat reader, outlook 2010, and microsoft word 2010 without viewing the desktop very often) all of the documents on my desktop disappeared.
Meaning, they were all there (some have been there for months) this morning when I came to work and turned my computer on, and while working (without rebooting or doing anything abnormal) the files disappeared. None of the folders have disappeared nor have
their positions on the desktop changed. The only thing out of the normal routine that I did today was update Adobe Acrobat Reader 9. I don't use X because it conflicts with my printer, though lately it's been acting up anyway so I thought it might be 9 and
did the check for updates(I've had check for updates turned off until now). It updated from something like 9.2.5 to 9.5.1. Other than that it's been a usual day of typing in Word, opening PDFs and printing them out, with a little Outlook 2010, Mozilla Firefox,
and some wordpad.
Some specs:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (no pending windows updates)
ESET Smart Security, active, up to date, and running the entire time. (Full scan returned no problems)
8gigs ram, C drive 500GB, D drive 80GB, E drive 1TB
and other various goodies I'll be glad to divulge if anyone wants to know.
Things that are -not- wrong:
I've been using computers for over 20 years, I built this one from parts as I do with all my computers, yada yada, I'm the "computer guy" at my company I run the network, I setup all the boxes, and take care of all the repairs and problems. Then again I am
not certified or licensed in anything, there is plenty about Windows, and especially Windows 7 that I do not understand. Also, and this is quite unfortunate, I live and work in Japan so my OS is in Japanese. I am fluent to an extent but I cannot navigate some
of the control panel areas without a little trial and error because the chinese characters get a little tricky when you get into too specific of a subject; BUT, I love and have been using ACDSee Classic forever, with it's "show hidden" and "show system" files
options, I have free reign over hidden files and programs from the rest of the people that use this computer who do not know what ACDSee is (safer for them).
Nothing shows up in ACDSee or explorer with show hidden files active in my desktop folder or any other user's desktop (there's only one user but windows makes those "all users" folders anyway)  or on the desktop itself. All the folders remain untouched.
Files that were positioned between two folders are missing, meaning I didn't accidentally click and drag the whole desktop into my recycle bin and some how clean the bin without noticing.
Only one file shows up in quick recovery scans of the recycle bin or the desktop, and I'm currently in the process of a deep scan of the entire C drive. (though I didn't delete the files, so why should they?)
Solution?
The only thing I can imagine is that somehow some sector of the desktop got "archived" or sectioned off in some manner. If I can assume the folders within the desktop folder have their own paths (their own separate sectors on the disk, albeit within the desktop
sector) and that the files within the desktop folder all share a common sector (the desktop folder) perhaps that sector got somehow funked with? For example the shortcut to "My Computer" even went missing. All I had left was a recycle bin and 9-10 folders
scattered across the desktop. So is there some way I can look into recovering that specific sector? Some sort of indexing/archiving that might cause this?
I don't have recovery points, nor that recent of backups to recover files such as last nights work or last weeks work, but more important than getting my data back is, What Happened!? So it doesn't happen again.
It seems there are actually a fair share of people (on this site and MANY others) that have or have had this problem and now fear their desktop as an evil devourer of mid-term papers. In my case as well, weeks of work, in a business environment, definitely
NOT acceptable.
Help!
If anyone has any insight or ideas of what could be causing this that would be great. We need an open discussion on this. Again it does not have to do with Human error (me), nor does it seem to be a virus (the hidden files deal); I have plenty experience with
computers and after scouring the task manager and the hard disk with various tools I cannot find tens of files all from one single location, that were all there just hours ago!.............??? Trying a search or turning desktop icons on something simple like
that has already been done  XD  no offense, but this is not that simple.
Thanks for any input!

Thanks again Milos.
A. The desktop theme and start menu etc. remain unchanged. Would that stand as proof the profile was not reset?
B. I was directed towards recuva on a different forum as well and gave it a shot. The deep scan (of the desktop and all sub folders) did recover about 4 of my files, but they are older over written versions of the files; some of the more recently created
files don't even show up on the list... I can see stuff that was deleted last year, but not some of my missing files? That what leads me to think it's something to do with file restructuring, or maybe as you're suggesting a profile management problem. The
files just plain aren't considered to be related to the desktop folder anymore.
C. That makes sense. The desktop folder is handled differently than say a root folder on the D:\ drive... I don't save stuff on the desktop at home either... it's just something everyone seems to do for convenience at my office, though I've never seen this
problem before.
D. I sometimes have that too and usually am dealing with PDFs received via outlook 2010, thus am opening them directly with adobe's reader.
E. ?
F. Yes.
G. I will look into that; thank you.
H. Ya the administrative warnings in Windows 7 are quite a pain in my opinion... being told I don't have privilege on my own computer is a little silly... no doubt my fault for not spending the time to reassure my system that it's my fault though. I'm interested
in opening system rights both personally and for work, I will look into that when I find the time.
I also ran scan disk after a reboot (before I went home two hours later than normal the day before yesterday) but it only lasted like 3 seconds and said all is well?? Which I've never seen before, but maybe I forgot to check the "check for bad sectors" box.
So I plan to try and run that again today in as deep a format as possible.... I still assume that is somehow the problem... for the files to not even show up from a program like recuva, it feels like the sector was written off as corrupt somehow or...??
why only one specific folder, exclusive of it's subfolders! XD

• Compressor video files disappearing

I've been using compressor (in Final Cut Pro) to make all of the files for my current project and it has worked fine until I get to my main (largest) file. I am using "Best Quality 150 minutes". It takes over 12 hours to compress and goes through both the audio and "fame" compression (over 20,000 frames), but when it it finished, only the audio file is there. I've searched my entire computer for the file, but it is nowhere to be found. I've tried this twice now with the same result. Anyone got any ideas?

Similar here.  I was able to get old .mpg vids to open in Quicktime - but as soon as the videos opened, the files disappeared from the drive and I can't find them.  Please help!

• File disappeared

I don't know if it's a iCloud topic, but I already checked there and noone replied.
A .numbers file of mine disappeared on my iCloud... or better: suddenly I could not open that any more. There's a (corrupted?) folder with a .plist file and .db file.
Is any way to have my numbers file BACK?

(1) Most likely not if you clicked cancel before it was saved. You will probably need to recreate it.
(2) Your only chance is to restart Mac and see if the file, or at least part of it, might be in the Trash inside a folder called "Recovered Files."

If the Aeroquartet freeware finds that repair is possible, you can decide whether the importance of the corrupted recording is worth the cost of repair.
(3) Finally, if your published system info correctly shows that you are using Mac OS X (10.5.2), you should update to the latest version:

Use Disk Utility to repair permissions *before installing _and again_ immediately following the restart* that completes the update.

• _All_ Files Disappeared in After Effects!

CS3 After three days of work over the weekend, I was loaded a AE project back on a USB drive so I could take it back to work with me tomorrow. The piece is a 35 second animation...maybe two or three dozen layers. (The strange thing is that the last comp which I exported was over a gig in size.) The transer to the USB drive was going slowly, so I canceled it.
Much to my surprise, all...I repeat...all of the files disappeared. All the project had was a name in AE...no files...no timeline...no nuthin'.Like I have just created a new project. The project remembers that it used files in the File/Open Recent Files but there is no trace of the timeline
Is there a way of retreiving a previously saved version? Help! Got to get this done for a major presentation. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply.
It seems I did not make myself clear. I was not using a USB stick drive. I was using an external hard drive which was connected by an USB connection. I have two external hard drives which I use. One is a normal external hard drive with an USB connection. The other hard drive is a USB docking station into which I can put various hard drives.
You mention the possibility of an autosave version. Do you know where these might be found? I have looked and there is no obvious location.
I have never lost _all_ files in a video editing project.

• Quicktime X file disappear after convert it.

I have a video on .mp4 format, open it on Quicktime X then use the "save as" option to convert this file to an iPod format. Usually takes about 30 minutes. The weird thing is that if I leave the computer running the process and get back later, the file disappears.
When the conversion starts generate an icon on the desire destination. But apparently if you don't manipulate the file right after the conversion is done the file just disappear.
Does anyone had the same problem before? Any Idea how to solve it?
The thing is that I don't want to sit in front of my computer to wait until the conversion is done, just upload several video and used them once they are all ready.

Hi Brian
thank you so much for your help !
I still don't fully understand waht really happned...
But I think the problem was solved...thanks to you.
I firstly tried to do exactly what you suggested: Exported the project as QT, then quited FCP, dragged the file into Compressor's Batch window, told the compressor to make a MPEG2 frm it... and here it stoped working...Submit ws subdued and I could not make it work...Then I took a look at the file QT had exported...it was a 303Mb FCP movie, not a QT.mov file, and the sequence was about 4.5 Gb !
Here I tried something else:
First, from FCP, Printed the sequence to video. Then captured it to FCP again to a new project, through Log and Capture, this time it did not need rendering and in the Capture Scratch folder after saving the new project was a QT.movie file; Dragged it to Compressor and made a MPEG2 file...
On the phone with the project's author I heard for the first time the original QT.mov files he gave me were in fact exported from iTunes under MacOS 9.2...I don't know if this can mean anything, since I have worked before with QT files exported from iTunes with no problem...
Can you please give me your insight about all this ?

• Files disappeared...

So... I wake up my computer from sleep, and i get a warning that CC application was unable to sync 5 files (old ones) due to a server error... I found that strange since they were old files and i opened my local CC folder... And... It was empty... I went to the online CC account and there were only 5 files there (the ones that were mentioned on the error.
The space used is still the same as if the files were there... But...
What is happening?!

I contacted Adobe by phone today, and the person who helped me, said that the files disappearing was probably a glitch on the server, and the space that was still occupied was still occupied because of some problem Adobe was trying to fix. But in my account details in their side it says that i have all my space free.
He also said that he was escalating my situation to his supervision and that they would contact me soon. So... Lets wait and see...

• Files disappear but won't delete from my MacBook.

I'm running out of space on my drive and started deleting big files a while back thinking I solved the problem. Now my disk space is full. What keeps happening is that it won't send my files to the trash when deleting and says that they are being deleted immediately. But my disk space stays the same and the files disappear. So now I don't know why I can't delete anything and I don't know where the files are going. Help??

Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

• Inserted jpeg-file disappears

I have inserted a jpeg-file in my movie-frame, it works fine when I run the movie 3-4 times, then the file disappears from the movie-frame. Why? And how do I prevent that from happening?

I think I have followed yor steps but I can not get this to work. This is how I do:
1)I have the original movie and a seperate jpeg-file which I copy and insert in the movie-frame and put it where I want it in the frame. This is no problem.
2)Then I use the "save as" and save the movie with a new name and as "self-contained movie".
Even after doing this 2-3 times it does not work. The Movie Properties "Resources" tab still shows that I have more than one file even if I resaved the movie. What did I do wrong?
