Your iMac uses the same 3.5" IDE/EIDE, Parallel ATA (PATA) - not Serial ATA (SATA), hard drives that are used in PCs. The onboard IDE controller will not recognize a capacity larger than 128 GBs, so any standard drive that's larger than that (160 GBs ->) will have unused capacity. A 120 GB drive was the optimal drive to install, but many manufacturers have discontinued that size. You should be able to find a 160 GB drive at any electronics, office supply, or computer store in your area, or you can check online retailers (like newegg.com) for a comparable drive. As an example, Micro Center is selling the Western Digital 160 GB (PATA) drive for $55. Seagate's drives are also a good choice, because of their 5-year warranty. After installing the drive, you should boot the iMac from the Tiger installer disk and use Disk Utility to format the new drive as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. You can also partition the drive into multiple volumes, if desired. This Macworld article will provide useful directions for opening up the iMac's lower housing and replacing the hard drive. As an alternative to replacing the internal hard drive, you could connect a FireWire external hard drive. The FireWire-connected drive wouldn't be subject to the 128 GB limitation, so you'd be able to use a mega-sized drive.

What is max size/spec for upgrading hard drive in 2006 mac mini intel core duo 1.66?

I've been through the commuity and on-line retailer pages and I'm confused by the variety of answers here. I know the max thickness must be 2.5." But some say 5400 RPM; others say 7200. Some say 1TB but show only 750GB.
Is iTB safe in this box? Overheating issues?
I've seen a Seagate Momentus 1TB from one retailer but can't find any trace of it at others or on the Seagate site.

The most important thing is that it be Serial ATA (1.5 Gb/s) compatible, there is no practical limit other than manufactured size in that form & speed.

Not the iMac serial #, I know about the recall program. We are looking at a refurbished (not Apple) iMac & it has a Seagate 1T HD, naturally, we want to know if it is one of the bad ones.

What is the proceedure for replacing a hard drive (after failure) for RAID 5 with IX4-300D?

I have the IX4-300D with 4 hard drives (identical Seagate drives) using RAID 5.
Someday a hard drive will fail and I and I have to replace it. I read through the users manual briefly and I didn't see any documentation on how to perform a hard drive replacement and not lose any data.
So here are my questions:
1) I know per the instructions that Lenovo prefers using identical hard drives. Let's say in 2 years, 1 hard drive fails. Most likely, the same model Seagate hard drive will not be available. So will using a replacement hard drive by the same manufacturer with similar specifications work?
2) Will the front panel (or the software) tell me which hard drive has failed?
3) What is the proceedure for replacing a hard drive after a failure occurs? I read that the IX4-300D is not hot-swappable. So do I just power the IX4-300D down, replace the hard drive, and turn it back on?

It is best to replace the hard drive with one that is the same manufacturer, rotational speed, and capacity, so it does not have to be exactly the same model.
The front panel should show which drive has failed. If not you can check the web interface to find out.

(INFO) This is a still in the sealed package 250Gb Internal IDE 3.5", 7200RPM Seagate Hard Drive. This is a Seagate "certified repaired" HDD that was shipped to me for a return. It has never been installed nor has it ever been open. The label also indicates it is a Barracuda 7200.8.
Should this one work on my MacBook.

What is listed under 'Backups' are the 'local snapshots'. In my case I do not have any.
Run a Time Machine update and the Backups should be reduced.

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

The iTunes Media folder is set in Preferences > Advanced, and is the key to most iTunes folder organizational activities. So I doubt that the automatic deletion will work for files that are somewhere else within the folder structure.
However, I have not experimented with that issue in quite a while, so you are welcome to give it a try in iTunes 11.

Boot camp does not give me the option to make a partition, instead it just gives me the options to download windows support software, install windows 7, etc. I do not want any of these, I want to set aside the space on my hard drive!

Hello, I wish to install Linux Ubuntu on my macbook pro by using boot camp to set aside space. Whenever I load the Boot Camp Assistant application out of the utilities folder in applications, it only gives me the options to download windows support software and install windows 7. I do not want this, I just want to be able to slide that little bar to set aside the space on my hard drive that i can use for Linux. I tried just downloading the windows support software but my internet is immensely slow and it has been an hour or so since it started and it's not even half way done. When this download is finished will i get the option to partition or will i just be faced with those same options?
I am on a 13" macbook pro, with apple OS X snow leopard version 10.7.2
A lot of the data on this macbook was transferred over from my old macbook i had.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Well thank you for your honesty. Apple requires you have to have a Mac to develop iPhone apps, ergo my foray into OS-Xland. No way around it that one except for running OSX in a VM, which would have probably saved me some quid, true enough.
BUT for those interested parties: VirtualBox has a startup script in /Library/StartupItems/VirtualBox that will prevent OSX from fully booting on the initial (and required) rEFIt boot cycle. Once I temporarily moved that out of the StartupItems rEFIt went in as expected.
FYI, the openSUSE desktop running native is a little peppier than OSX native which was a nice surprise. Now if the Mac just had more open source software we would have a deal. (:

Try assigning Queen as the Album Artist on the compilations in iTunes on your computer.

I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear. It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire. ????

After downloading music and dragging into iTunes I end up with multiple copies of the album on my hard drive. I do have the "copy files into iTunes library" checked. When I try to erase one of the copies I end up with red ! in iTunes library.

When I try to delete one of the copies of the album and go back to itunes and try playing a song, I get a red exclamtion point next to the song with an error message saying itunes cannot locate file. My questions are, Does Itunes literally make a copy of the song? If so , How do you know which file to delete?

Sony's own entertainment software on the Vaio plays merry **** with iTunes, worse there's no telling when it will kick in.
First head over to the Sony Vaio site and get the update for the software, that will stop it from messing with the iTunes database/library files when you connect your iPod.
