The math/ logic of the Tachometer

I am find the rotations per second (rps) of a tachometer, but I am having trouble figuring out the logic behind it/ how to calculate it. I am using a pulley with 10 spokes, and all that I can think of right now is have the tachometer count every 0.25 seconds then divide it by 10 to make it a full rotation. I tried simply dividing the count found by the tachometer by the total time to find rps, but it doesn't seem correct because with that logic the program won't be giving me the current rps. I don't really need a full vi, but any help with the logic behind would be appreciated. I am using a daq assistant that is detecing the voltage of the tachometer and using a threshold to detect the spokes to count the rotations.
Thanks.

Sounds like you have an incremental optical rotational encoder and are trying to make the system of the encoder + your software act as a tachometer.  A tachometer is a device that measures rotational speed, so the encoder on its own isn't actually a tachometer, although they are sometimes marketed that way if they are often used along with measurement hardware/software that makes the system behave as a tachometer.
Anyways, an encoder can only tell you the rotational position, not the rotational speed.  An incremental encoder can only be watched to see when it changes position.  Therefore, you won't ever be able to get a true current speed from it, but you can numerically differentiate the position with respect to time in order to get an estimation of the speed over the sampling period.  Most commonly one does what you have described - count each spoke over a sampling period, such as 0.25 s, and then divide the number of counts by the sampling period to get speed.  Shorter sampling times mean that you can sample much faster and have an estimated speed much closer to current speed; however, longer sampling allows better resolution.

  • Tachometer in WAD 3.5x - to show Avg of all values in the Data provider

    Hi All,
    I am creating a tachometer in WAD 3.5x.
    Actually the requirement for the tachometer i want to design is that it should display the Average value of the data column that is displayed in the dataprovider(which is a view in this case).
    My view (Data Provider for tachometer) contains only one data column, and its Result row contains the Average value for the data column. But when I run WAD, the tachometer doesnot read the result row, instead it reads each of the individual rows and creates a pointer for each record. Whereas as per my requirement, the tachometer should display only a single pointer depicting the average value of all records.
    I am trying to suppress all the single value rows and display only the result row in my view, am unable to do so.
    Any help would be much appreciated

  • Can I repurpose the fans in a dead G5?

    I have an old Dual Core G5 that has died. I will recycle it thru Apple. However, I removed the two hard drives (It was the logic board that died) and was also wondering if there was any way to repurpose the fans? I removed the dual fans and the one that was attached next to the speaker. What sort of procedure could I do to power these fans and use them in some fashion?

    Connect the fans to a 12v DC wall wart to power them, or, wire to a Molex connector and connect them to an ATX PSU powered machine.
    The dual fans from the G5 (essentially) are these:

  • Adjusting the angles of graphs in Disco Viewer or Dashboard by mouse

    Can we adjust the angles(degrees) of graphs in Disco Viewer or Dashboard by just pushing the mouse?
    Thanks

    Hi Disco Newbie
    Gosh, if I could get my hands on some pre-built finanial dashboards for Discoverer just imagine what I can do.
    I'm afraid that dashboards are unique to an organization and what works in one place will not be suitable in another. But of course, it all depends on your definition of a dashboard. The one that I like and the one that keeps me out of mischief is this one:
    A dashboard or dash board is a panel located under the windscreen containing indicators and dials such as the tachometer / speedometer and odometer.
    I bet you never thought it was so easy.
    Seriously, look again at this definition and you will see the foundation of a business dashboard. It's not the dials such as the tachometer, odometer, fuel gauge and temperature gauge that are important. It's not the numbers either.
    What is really important is the meaning or significance (aka KPI) that we apply to those numbers. Thus, depending upon the situation a speed of 100 mph might be considered bad, particularly if being chased by an irate police officer down a busy city street. Do the same thing on a race track and you might be considered a menace for going too slow. But do 100 mph on an autobahn in Germany and no-one will bat an eyelid because it is perfectly acceptable.
    The concept of dashboards in automobiles and in business are the same - they give you a snapshot of critical information at a glance. If you do happen to be running out of petrol the dashboard will automatically start the indicator to bring this fact to your attention upon a certain critical low point being reached.
    Similarly, your business dashboards need to provide all of the critical information that is needed to run your daily operations. They can tell you if you are spending your petrol allowance.. oops I meant to say spending your company cash too fast; what is the cash flow; what is the percentage of patients who needed a repeat visit; how many requests for service were denied this week, and how does this compare with last week - and so on.
    In a business, you can imagine that every employee has a steering wheel and an accelerator pedal but it is not necessary that everyone gets a full-blown dashboard. Since the user roles are different they do not need the same level and kind of information. The worker bees need to work and the managers need to manage. Typically only the higher executives will get the full dashboard priviliges. They want to manage by exception and will only become really interested when something out of the ordinary happens.
    Thus, this is where you ought to begin. You need to find some metrics that when applied against a set of criteria will either have a value above, equal to or below the criteria. Since your boss has the dashboard access he or she can tell at a glance if the company is running out of petrol, or whether the dashboard can be closed for another day and he or she can get back to the golf course!
    Does this brief and hopefully amusing overview of dashboarding help?
    Best wishes

  • My controller dosent get the feedback

    hi
    I have the tachometer of my machine connected to the servo motor but still my controller doesnt recieve the feedback.What should I do ?The encoder settings are enabled.Pls help.

    Hi
    I am sorry for not giving you the full details.But lemme try telling u the whole setup.I ve got a instrument called "clinostat"This instrument has got two motors in it and these two motors control the speed of two wheels.
    I am using the PCI 7342 controller and PXI.I am using a Servo motor.There is an option in this PXI and it says:Identify the devicehud that be done?It says that you will have a file attached to the device file where i can get the identification number but i cudnt find anything of that sort.I am using the Motion assistant s/w and labview 7.1.
    With the help of the motion assistant I am able to run the motors now but the motor doesnt run at the speed i set in the motion assistant.why is that so?And I wanted to check whether the analog feedback that comes from my instrument's tachometer(there is no encoder in the machine) is right, I ran a example program "Automatic analog feedback" from the www.ni.com site .My motor runs at a constant speeed and the expected feeedback was totally different from the actual feedback.So the feedback isnt coming properly from the tachometer to controller.Do I need a interpolator to use analog signal with NI motion controller?I am sorry for asking you so many questions but all this harware stuff is something new to me.Pls do suggest me the stuff i shud read to solve all these issues.Thanx a lot for helping me. Awaiting your reply.

  • Tachometer time synchronized with waveform time

    We ran into an issue trying to record both the speed/time from the OAT
    Tachometer.vi
    and waveform data from our other channels.  The problem is that the
    time shown in the waveform data is different from that in the tach
    signal.  I need to make sure my tach signal rpm data is synchronized
    with the data I recorded from my other channels (pressure, temp, etc).
    I am recording data to two different excel files using two
    different Write Labview Measurement.vis.  I have the "enable" switches
    tied together.  I record the data to excel from my .dat files.  Since
    the tachometer signal does not send "0 rpm" there is nothing in the
    excel file until I have a speed profile.  So I wait to record until I
    have a clear speed profile around 120 rpm and then record data.  Once
    in the excel files, I subtract the offset from the tachometer signal
    (Excel file #1) and the other waveform data (Excel file #2) so that
    both start at time zero.  I get about 0.5s extra recorded samples from
    #2.  Why do #1 and #2 not match?  Is there any way I can ensure that
    the data I am taking is occurring at the same time and one set does not
    lag the other?
    Thanks.

    Hi all
    I also had a similar problem. In my VI, I want to acquire a waveform, starting from the moment when the speed goes over a threshold.
    I have a loop that acquires a every iteration 1.5s of waveform and computes speed profile, then tries to cut the waveform when the speed exceeds the threshold value.
    Unluckily, watching the speed profile generated by the VI "OAT Analog Tacho Process" (whose reset connector is set to FALSE) I can see that the time values are not in phase with the acquisition timelenght.
    To give an example, at the 4th iteration of the loop, where I would expect values between 4.5s and 6s, usually the speed profile has a timelenght ranging from a bit more than 3s to 4.7s, which means, it is not a problem due to the loss of a cycle for initialization issues, otherwise its points would stay inside the range 3s-4.5s
    I thought it could be a problem of buffer underflow, but even increasing the buffer lenght doesn't solve the problem.
    May it be an effect of the interpolation in the computation of speed profile? Or do I lose some samples during the loop? (I close the acquisition channel only at the end of the VI, in every loop I just call the read VI)
    Thanks in advance

  • Tachometer RPM Errors

    I am trying to use my tachometer and LabVIEW (V11) to give me the rpm of a wheel/hubmotor system. Using a USB 6211, the ctr0 counter pin, the OAT Digital Tachometer vi and a function generator (generating a square wave at 2Vpp, 50% duty cycle and 1-25 Hz) is giving me very big errors. For instance, there are times where the setup will say that the rpm's are extremely large, negative, NAN or infinity. Also, when I increase the frequency, there are regions that it will increase the rpm and others where it will decrease it. I have also added the loop timing delay to somewhat account for the likely delay that will be incurred when this code is inserted into the larger program that will have a lot more running along side this, and this seems to alter the performance. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Katie,
    Thanks for your response, and I apologize that it has taken me a while to get back to you.
    I tried incorporating the OAT Build Digital Tacho Info VI, and received the same results.
    In response to the second half of your reply, I did use MAX and confirmed that the count was incrementing at the frequency of the signal from the function generator. I have attached the VI that will be using the tachometer to get a wheel's rpm/ground speed to monitor performance so that you can get a better look at all that is going on. The other VI was used to test LabVIEW rpm/groundspeed methods outside of the main program, which is not currently complete enough to run. Additionally, the tachometer will need to be sampled continuously at a rate of 7kHz. The wheel will only ever have a ground speed of 0 to 50 kph (0 to 33 mph) which means that a point will occur with frequency between 22 and 24 Hz (24 and 26 in wheel).
    My biggest concern is finding a method of calculating the rpm/groundspeed that will not slow down the rest of the program. Of the other sensors, three will also be sampling continuously at 7kHz and two at only a few Hz.
    For the attached VI, you only really need to look at the "True" case for the two top most case structures, as all other cases are basically copies of this case. Also, there are some subvi/support VIs that LV will look for, which can be ignored since they do not have anything to do with the tachometer implementation/problem.
    Thanks again for the help,

  • How do I read a pulsed input on an SCB-68 counter channel?

    Hello all, I have been searching through the DAQ help and this board
    for a few hours now and I cannot find an answer that addresses what
    should be a simple problem. Let's start with hardware and software: I
    have a 6062E PCMCIA DAQmx card connected to a SCB-68 (E Series)
    connector block. I am running Version 7.1.0.306 of Measurement Studio
    for Visual Studio .NET and am coding in C#. So please, no LabView
    answers.
    I am trying to read the pulsed output of the Omega HHT-1501 Digital
    Tachometer - it outputs a TTL LOW pulse every time the sensor is
    triggered, I would like to read in these pulses and  get the
    frequency to determine RPMs.  As far as I can tell I need to
    connect the pulsed signal line to CTR0, which is PFI9/GPCTR0_GATE on
    the connector block, pin #3. I have verified that the tachometer is
    indeed pulsing correctly. I have used the DAQ Assistant to create a
    DAQmx task to acquire the frequency of a digital signal using the 1
    Counter Low Frequency Measurement method, input range is set from 1Hz
    to 1KHz, starting edge is set to falling. For Task Timing the
    Acquisition Mode is Continuous, Samples to Read = 100.
    When I run the test I get no response. And it also seems that the
    GPCTR0_GATE is always at +5V. I have tried just about every other
    combination of inputs, including using CTR1 on GPCTR1_GATE, pin 41, all
    with the same result - no signal read.
    So what is the problem? Every post or help article I have read makes it
    sound like plug and play to read the pulses but this is not the case -
    does the counter gate need to be configured as an input in either
    software or hardware? Am I supposed to have a signal set on the SOURCE,
    and if so what? And what about my ground line from the pulse source? I
    have tried attachign that to DGND, still no result, and if I attach the
    pulse signal gnd to the GPCTR0_SOURCE it causes my tachometer to lock
    up.
    This thread
    http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=34826&query.id=3937#M34826
    seems to be very closely related to what I want to do but is as vague
    as the help articles - it mentions using one of the two timebases as
    the source input - what does this mean in terms of code/wiring?
    Additionally in the NI-DAQmx help article under Device
    Considerations->Counter Signal Connections->AO/E/S Series it says
    "The count direction terminal must be tristated to use an external
    signal. Reset the device to ensure the terminal is tristated" for edge
    counting. A) Is this related? and B) how does one tristate by reset?
    Power cycling the scb-68 has no apparent effect on anything.
    I would appreciate any help on this matter, hopefully with as much
    detail as possible since the help manuals seem to be mostly useless for
    guiding one in performing any task.
    Thanks!

    Hi Shyam,
    The major factor that would come into play with the signal having some noise is that the counter is expecting a TTL signal and the oscilloscope is measuring an analog input signal. If your signal floats above the TTL thresholds or does not rise/fall within the specifications, the behavior is not predictable and it can be measured as a high or low by the counter. An oscilloscope will measure the analog signal and you may be able to measure the frequency of the noise on your scope by analyzing a smaller timeframe of the signal.
    What Is the Definition of a TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic) Compatible Signal?

  • MINUTES:SECONDS to decimal time, (MINUTES.SECONDS)

    I want to be able to convert "colon time" (28:45) minutes:seconds to "decimal time" (28.75).
    I have resorted to a work-around: put minutes in one column, seconds in a second column, convert the minutes to seconds, add the two seconds columns, divide by 60 entered in another column. It works, but for what I am doing it takes several columns of formulas.
    I only have 08 at home. I am at an APPLE STORE where I can do this easily using iWork 09.
    Is there an easier solution for this using 08?
    Thank you,

    (New To Spread Sheets)

    Jerrold Green1, Jerry:
    Most excellent posts by you, thank you. Your formula was quite clear and it worked. I formatted an entry column as TEXT, and the formula column (to the right) as NUMBER (to two decimal-places, which is what I need).
    I found the formulas: LEFT, LEN, and RIGHT under TEXT, as you said it would be. I have yet to figure out the(math—logic) of the formula!
    I could not find this formula in APPLE's NUMBERS08 User Guide. Nor could I find a direction for converting MM:SS to decimal minute(s) in the 09 User Guide.
    I had printed the 08 guide right after I had bought the software and had downloaded the 09 guide to study as a preview to buying it.
    I do have an "issue" with the software of NUMBERS 08.
    Using 08, when formatting a column as Date and Time, one has three options: Date and Time, Time only, or Date only.
    But when I formated the column for Time only, a date might appear when I clicked on a cell in that column.
    To me, it is like being asked if I want cheese on my Big Mac, I say NO, and I receive the Big Mac with cheese! Why ask, sif you don't listen?
    So, if anyone knows what the reason for this (the NUMBERS 08—not cheese on my BIg Mac!), please tell.
    Thanks.

  • Int cannot be deffered error

    Hello,
    I hope this is an appropriate forum for this question. This is not a HW assignment; I have just started Java as a hobby. I think the real problem I have is a lack of sound understanding of how to call methods, and what criteria have to be met to call a method within the main().
    Here is the code:
    public class InconvenientChange3
         public static int quarters;
         public static int dimes;
         public static int nickels;
         public static int pennies;
         public static int sum;
         public static int sum()
                   sum = quarters + dimes + nickels + pennies;
         public static void main(String[] args)
                   System.out.println();
                   int[] values = new int [100];
                   for (int amount = 1; amount < 100; amount ++)
                             quarters = amount/25;
                             int remainder = amount%25;
                             dimes = remainder/10;
                             remainder = remainder%10;
                             nickels = remainder/5;
                             pennies = remainder%5;
                   for (int amount = 1; amount < 100; amount ++ )
                             values[amount] = sum.values[amount];
                             System.out.println(values[amount]);
                   System.out.println();
    The error I get is: int cannot be dereferenced values[amount] = sum.values[amount];
    I have tried troubleshooting this for a while, but can't figure out this error. Thanks so much for your assistance.
    - steve

    Hello,
    Thanks for your response. My intent is to apply the method "sum" (which adds the total number of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies) to the elements of the values[ ] array, thus creating a new array that holds the number of coins required for each value.
    So the value at index 1 is 1 (1 penny)
    The value at index 11 is 2 (1 dime, 1 penny)
    The value at index 41 is 4 (1 quarter, 1 dime, 1 nickel, 1 penny)
    etc.
    I played with this a little, and successfully printed the sum for every value by including the statement:
    sum = quarters + dimes + nickels + pennies wihin the first for loop. (So I know my math logic is correct). Now I want to assign these sums to a new array - that's my intent.
    Thanks again for your help and patience.
    Regards,
    steve

  • I never did anything to get a warranty, so I don't have one. Should have.

    Well I am extremely frequently using this thing. Two months I had broken the hold feature completely out. I don't mean the white piece I mean the white piece and everything down to the screen. So when I was listening to some Sabbath doing some trademark air guitar I rocked out a bit too hard and my iPod got dunked in the toilet. I got it out fast and dried it and it works. So now what happens is when I try to put it to sleep is says is charged all the time. When I am playing a song it says it is charging and when I have backlight timer on it will sit there all night flashing until it is dead. It drains its power of a twelve hour charge in about 4 hours of standby. Good math logic there, you know. If you know how to fix this at all please ignore the rest.
    So, since I don't have a warranty that I know of(you probably have to send something in,) would it be cheaper to get a new battery, installation, and maybe a new hold button on it, or would I just be better off buying a 4 gb nano 3rd gen w/ a warranty. If you don't have to send anything in peachy, i have only had it 8 months.

    You would have to purchase a program to do this.
    The ipod is not a storage/backup device.
    All of your music should be on your comptuer as that is where it came form in the first place and you should always have a backup copy.

    I have a tachometer used to measure our centrifuge that puts out 5v every time it makes a full turn. I need to read the frequency of this 5v blip (0 volts otherwise) in Hz or RPM's - (Prefer Hz). Which function would be best for this? I should be able to do the math from that point. You are reading the Tachometer input that is giving 5V pulse when it completes a rotation. You tried to compare it with "5"?
    Analog input will never give you a value exactly what you are expected, it should always have tolerrance of atleast 2% added to your expected input.
    I have added a quick example on calculating RPM Value this may not give you precise result but it will give a kick start for you to use low level VI's
    Good luck

  • Alt+F9 status in Word

    We save a merge document on a server. When a workstation accesses the document, it is copied onto the client workstation.  The merge document only works properly if the merge field Names (e.g. {mergefield 19})  are visible when the document
    is opened on the client. If the merge field names are not visible, we press Alt+f9 to make them visible and the resulting document is printed correctly.
    The dilemma is that the document does not open the same on all work stations but it is coming from the same document on the server.  The Alt+f9 toggle appears to be a function of the status of the work station (client) computer.
    Question:  Is there any way to see the status of the Alt+f9 on each work station?  Is there any way to set the status of Alt+f9 so that any document opened in word defaults to see the Merge field names rather than the data?
    Bill Voorhees

    Thank you for your responses.  The Calyx software changes the main document view from {MERGEFIELD 19} to <<Point Field 19>> when alt+f9 is pressed.
    When the finished document uses {MERGEFIELD 19} from the main document, it prints correctly.  If, however, the main document shows the field as <<Point Field 19>>, and that field is used in a word field with any math logic, it produces a
    Syntax error, <.
    Maybe Calyx point Software could produce a « & »  character rather than 2 "less than' and 2 "greater than' symbols.
    No, the Calyx point Software doesn't change the display - Word does.
    Again, the syntax error strongly suggests you're working with a Preview
    and all the problems would go away if only you would Finish the merge. I suspect all you're achieving by toggling the field code display is causing the fields to update. the same could be achieved by Ctrl-A, F9. Even when working in Preview mode, however,
    you could obviate the printout problems by checking Word's 'Update fields before printing' option (File|Options>Display). That option is user-specific but doesn't compromise the document display.
    As for the chevrons (ie '« »') - they're part of the actual mergefields. Whether they're displayed as chevrons or as braces (i.e. '{ }') depends on the Alt-F9 state; they're the same things displaying in different modes, that's all.

  • Fan Error on HP desktop

    hi there guys,
    i got a hp: p6203w desktop computer with the stock; Sunon KD1209PTS2 on board as a case fan.
    I recently switched it with a Noiseblocker MS-81 quiet fan and got the cpu fan failure on startup.
    Now whats weird is when i check my speeds with speedfan software is that, with my original fan the software say Fan2 : 1000 RPM
    now when i start windows 7 (after i pressed F2 when failure pops up) and check my speeds with the new fan , the software say Fan2: 0 RPM
    whats remarkable is that the new fan is actually turning , when i checked my computer open-cased, not very fast but its slowly turning, while the software said it doesn't
    So whats this saying for me is that the computer didn't recognized the fan in the first place at starting up the computer !
    Do you guys know if this has something to do with a RPM check at startup ? Or is it another difference in specifications of the two different fans ?
    Its no possibility for me to check out my bios, because i already checked and i'm not blessed with a cool n quiet function or other fan settings
    Maybe the new Noiseblocker fan is just not turning fast enough for the computer to recognize it ?
    Please help me out here i got stuck !
    Best regards
    Willie

    all my fans are 3pin also the new one but the new Noiseblocker has a 3pin (tacho) connector?
    maybe this has something to do with this problem ?
    You say it has a 3-pin tacho connector?
    Speedfan may not be reading the tachometer signal  with the Noiseblocker fan because it is is faulty. Normally changing the fan is quite straightforward.
    If  the fan is running,you have checked the CPU and motherboard temps and they are within specs, it is really not an issue. It is more of an annoyance if you are willing to tolerate it.  You may be able to turn off the warning in the BIOS
    What is the CPU that is installed?
    The standard is a single three pin connector.
