The Safari Sidebar

How do you use the Safari Sidebar? When I go to View and Show Sidebar, it opens to the left but is empty. Clicking the plus symbol opens the Sidebar folder. I guess I just want to know what I need to place in the folder to make the Sidebar useful.
Is there a way I can view bookmarks and history from it or maybe webpage thumbnails?
If not, then what is its purpose?
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GB RAM | 160GB HD | 6x DL SuperDrive | 128MB VRAM

Welcome to Apple Discussions
The "Sidebar" you see may be one of the features offered by the 3rd party Safari add-on SAFT. Added to the Sidebar are RSS feeds; installation being explained in the "read me" file accompanying the Installer. SAFT is installed in either your main or user library>InputManagers folder.
This sidebar is not designed to hold history or bookmarks.
3rd party Safari add-on SafariStand offers a sidebar, specific for tabs - showing a small (size can be adjusted) image of each tab opened in the Tab bar.
Hope that helps.

  • Hide or Remove Safari Sidebar

    A few things, re: Mavericks:
    How do I disable the Safari Sidebar now in Safari 7.0?  I don't like it, I find it very annoying and it takes up too much screen space.  You want to travel to a new page and hit your bookmarks icon and the side bar opens.  Select your website and the side bar remains open unless you undertake another mouse stroke to close it and even then it will often freeze and not close. Note:  it is more than annoying because I use two 30" Cinema displays that work as one 5 foot display so I've got to travel like a mad man to the left hand side of Safari to close up the thing.
    When Apple adds these types of features do they ever take customer input?
    What's going to happen is that I will end up dropping Safari for SeaMonkey or Firefox.

    Did you bother to actually READ the question?  "How do I DISABLE..."  I don't want to hide it, I want it disabled, removed entirely.
    To those who wish to help another - please read the questions.  If you don't know the answer don't try being overly helpful with advice that does not answer the question simply because you are trolling for points.

    How can I disable the new sidebar feature of 8.1.2 in Safari?

    You can dismiss it by tapping the solid blue bookmark. You can avoid it all together by making Favorites of your bookmarks then enabling the Show Favories Bar.

  • I can't download from the Safari Extensions gallery

    Hi,
    *I can't see any download/install buttons in the Apple Safari Extensions page.* I just uninstalled ALL my extensions trying to troubleshoot this and now I can't get them back.
    I know there are at least two other issues like this but they're both unanswered and I honestly can't follow how some people claim to have been able to fix it.
    Please help! I won't have any choice but to switch to Chrome if I don't get this fixed.
    Thanks,
    Carlos

    Hi,
    Open a Fiinder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Now open the Library folder then the Safari folder then the Extensions folder.
    If any of the extensions you have installed are in that folder, move them to the Desktop.
    Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari and try the gallery.
    If that didn't help, go back to the Extension folder and move the Extensions.plist file to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safaari, try agian.

  • Twitter timeline incomplete in Safari sidebar

    My twitter feed timeline in Safari's sidebar is consistently missing tweets from a couple of people I follow. On twitter.com the tweets show up, but are missed/skipped in the sidebar.
    Deleting twitter from system pref's and then relogging in, does not help; neither does unfollowing then refollowing.
    I think must be a bug in Safari integration with twitter.
    or
    My son thinks Safari is treating some tweets as spam, and using a junk mail filter. He may be correct.

    Might be a cookies, cache, or extensions, issue.
    From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
    Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
    Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
    If that doesn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
    From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
    If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • In the lefthand sidebar of Finder, under 'Shared', I encounter in addition my TC, another computer, identified by a long name starting with 'hp'. I don't have another computer. What could this be? And how to get rid of it?

    In the Finder sidebar, under 'Shared', I encounter my TC, as well as another item with a long name starting with 'hp'. 'Get info' shows it to be a 'PC'. However, I don't have a PC. It cannot be my printer (HP), since that has anoter name.
    I can not access the item, which has me a 'guest'.
    What could this item be? And how to get rid of it?
    Many thanks in advance for your help.
    DB

    It's almost certainly your hp printer and is showing the WiFi adapter MAC address after the HP.
    To verify, look at the printer configuration page via Bonjour in Safari.  The settings tab shows the Mac address in the bottom left hand corner for my model of HP printer.
    I'm sorry but I can't explain why that would show up in the finder.

  • Customizing the Wiki sidebar step by step

    I'm having severe problems with my Wiki-setup. Frankly the worst Apple-experience in my entire life. When I'm done with this thread, I'm certain that a lot of other people will have an easier time configuring a custom sidebar in their own Wiki. At the moment, I'm lost.
    *Apple has posted this: "Extending your wiki server"*
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/ExtendingYour_WikiServer.pdf
    Which has a chapter on page 18-23 that takes ut step by step towards a custom wiki sidebar.
    This guide is poorly written and takes an abstract approach towards helping the user, in this case, poor me. To summarize:
    As far as I know, the relevant files are stored at
    */Library/Application\ Support/Apple/WikiServer*
    (themes, wikicontent and such)
    And some files at
    /Library/WebServer/Documents
    (index file that points towards the correct wiki-dir)
    *------ QUOTE: ------*
    Creating Sidebars
    If you haven’t created a sidebar before, it might be easier to customize an example
    sidebar to suit your needs.
    In the wireframe theme’s theme.plist file, there is a sidebars section that contains an
    array of sidebars you can customize:
    <key>sidebars</key>
    <array>
    <dict>
    sidebar keys and values
    </dict>
    <dict>
    sidebar keys and values
    </dict>
    </array>
    *------ END QUOTE: ------*
    *I assume...*
    That "the wireframe themes theme.plist file" is this file:
    /Library/Application Support/Apple/WikiServer/Themes/wireframe.wikitheme
    Later down, at page 23, there is a part named *Using the Example Sidebars*
    *------ QUOTE: ------*
    The wireframe theme’s theme.plist file includes several sidebar examples. All of these
    examples are commented out by default. You’ll need to remove the comments marks if
    you want to use the example sidebars as custom sidebars. If you don’t add any custom
    sidebars, the default sidebars are used. If you use at least one custom sidebar, the
    default sidebars don’t appear.
    Consider commenting out all sidebars you don’t want to use, and leaving
    uncommented all sidebars you want to use. Doing this allows you to choose which
    sidebars you want and allows you to easily change sidebar settings later on. To do this,
    you must start a comment before the <dict> tag for a sidebar, and end the comment
    after the </dict> tag for that sidebar.
    *------ END QUOTE: ------*
    Do I understand this right? I may just edit this file and it will show up on all my Wiki's? What if I want different sidebars on my different Wiki's? Guess different sidebars should be an easy thing to fix, so I doubt the change is made in this file - which gets me thinking, why do I need to edit this file at all? Well.. Let's do it anyway:
    *The original file: /Library/Application Support/Apple/WikiServer/Themes/wireframe.wikitheme/themes.plist*

    Then, to make the changes take effect, I use this command re restart the service:
    sudo serveradmin stop teams; sudo serveradmin start teams;
    I launched Safari and check the website. Theese changes had NO effect on either of the Wiki's. Which is actually a good result because I want to controll this for each wiki. But there is no documentation about how to do this
    Back to the drawingboard....
    Well, since I should be able to to control this separately for each wiki maybe I should try to edit the theme.plist file located inside one of the specific themes? Such as one of theese, located at /Library/Application Support/Apple/WikiServer/Themes/
    block.green.banner.wikitheme obsidian.blue.banner.wikitheme
    block.green.wikitheme horizon.blue.banner.wikitheme obsidian.blue.wikitheme
    block.red.banner.wikitheme horizon.blue.wikitheme obsidian.green.banner.wikitheme
    block.red.wikitheme horizon.green.banner.wikitheme obsidian.green.wikitheme
    float.green.banner.wikitheme horizon.green.wikitheme obsidian.orange.banner.wikitheme
    float.green.wikitheme horizon.grey.wikitheme obsidian.orange.wikitheme
    float.orange.banner.wikitheme horizon.red.banner.wikitheme
    float.orange.wikitheme horizon.red.wikitheme
    Well, let's try this.
    I'll edit the /Library/Application Support/Apple/WikiServer/Themes/horizon.green.wikitheme/theme.plist file which is from the theme I use for one of my Wikis. Originally, it looks like this:
    *------ QUOTE: ------*
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>displayName</key>
    <string>Horizon Green</string>
    <key>name</key>
    <string>com.apple.horizon.green</string>
    <key>version</key>
    <string>1</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    *------ END QUOTE: ------*
    Let's try to add the sidebar arrays here. Like this:
    *------ QUOTE: ------*
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>displayName</key>
    <string>Horizon Green</string>
    <key>name</key>
    <string>com.apple.horizon.green</string>
    <key>version</key>
    <string>1</string>
    </dict>
    <key>sidebars</key>
    <array>
    <dict>
    <key>displayName</key>
    <string>Custom tags</string>
    <key>howMany</key>
    <string>5</string>
    <key>sortDirection</key>
    <array>
    <string>reverse</string>
    </array>
    <key>tag</key>
    <array>
    <string>custom</string>
    </array>
    <key>type</key>
    <string>search</string>
    <key>uid</key>
    <string>CustomTags</string>
    </dict>
    </array>
    <key>version</key>
    <string>1</string>
    </plist>
    *------END QUOTE: ------*
    I'll run this command once again: sudo serveradmin stop teams; sudo serveradmin start teams;
    I launch Safari and guess what happens! The Wiki has decided to revert to the theme which I choose as the default theme when I installed Mac Os X Leopard Server! It reverted to the Block Green Books theme, and the sidebar is still not changed. If I go via the Wiki's admin interface to rechoose my origional theme, it's become unavailable.
    If i change the /Library/Application Support/Apple/WikiServer/Themes/horizon.green.wikitheme/theme.plist back to it's origional state, then run the sudo serveradmin stop teams; sudo serveradmin start teams;
    I'm back with a working Wiki, but still no custom sidebar.
    No success. Does anybody have any suggestions, please?
    I'm crying my eyes out over here :-/

    Eureka! I found a solution that helped me along the way. I'm now able to add as many Custom Dynamic content in the sidebar as I wish. But I haven't been able to remove "What's hot" and "Upcoming events" yet.
    *THIS is how you customize the sidebar in your wiki server running on Mac Os X 10.5 Leopard*
    1: When you have a working wiki, use you're Terminal.app to access this dir:
    /Library/Collaboration/Groups/[NAME OF YOUR WIKI]
    Inside this foldere there is a file named metadata.plist
    This file is where you add your content. BUT you MUST do this in the correct order to make it work. This is how:
    1. Edit the file and insert content like shown in the example bellow.
    2. Save the metadata.plist file and go to the Application Server Admin and restart the webservice Click stop, what until it's stopped, and click start again.
    (If your're running the server in simplemode, you just use server preferences and stop and start the webservice again).
    3. Run this command in the terminal: sudo serveradmin stop teams; sudo serveradmin start teams;
    4. Now you can se that you're changes have been made.
    Issues: If you access the wiki via you're browser and you get "internal server error" -It's because the syntax in the metadata.plist file is wrong, so revert to your backup and try again.
    If you don't restart the webservice like described in step 2 above, and then try to access the wiki via you're webbrowser, the wiki will overwrite your new settings and you're changes will not be saved.
    This is still by far the stupidest undocumented issue I've experienced with Apple. If Steve S knew about this, he would be ashamed
    The file shown bellow is not entierly like the one that will work in your wiki, this is because the GUID id unique for every wiki - and our file bellow specifies to use the green theme as well. So instead of copy/paste the file I'm showing here, just modify your own by adding lines like this:
    <dict>
    <key>displayName</key>
    <string>Final Cut Pro</string>
    <key>howMany</key>
    <string>10</string>
    <key>sort</key>

    <key>type</key>
    <string>custom</string>
    <key>uid</key>
    <string>CustomTagSidebar</string>
    </dict>
    Look at my file bellow to learn exacly where to place the lines.

  • Where is the Safari icon located.

    I have found a bunch of custom icons for OSX on line and have started using them. I replaced the trash can empty and full, some of the icons in the finder sidebar etc. through system/library/coreservices. I backed up to original folders and corrected disk permissions afterward. Everything is working fine. But I can't find all of the icons I would like to replace.
    Where is the safari icon for example? I looked in dock, finder and coretypes bundle. I can't seem to locate it. Can anyone help?

    Hi Jason,
    When it comes to changing icons in the system or in applications, the possibility of creating some system problem jumps. As an alternative, I use CandyBar, which simplifies this process immensely.

  • My safari does not keep my history despite all the settings and adjustment i made to the safari preferences so as to be able to keep my browsing history. the browsing history is wiped out whenever i close safari.

    i use macbook pro mid 2012, OS X mavericks. my safari does not keep my history desp[ite all the adjustments made to the settings at safari preferences. my browsing history are cleared whenever i exit safari. i dont know why. i want to try and re - in stall it . the safari is version 7.0.1. but i dont know how.

    If you're having trouble making changes to files that are inside your home folder (represented by a house icon in the sidebar of a Finder window), or if you can't get changes to the settings of an application to stick, then please see below.
    Back up all data.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
    Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
    You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
    Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
    Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
    In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
    Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
    In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

    HI,
    You have CTLoader/Conduit installed that is most likely the causing Safari to crash.
    Open a Finder window. Select MacintoshHD in the Sidebar on the left. Then on the right open the Input Managers Folder and move these files to the Trash.
    CTLoader/ctloader.bundle/Contents/MacOS/ctloader
    Now in that same Library folder open the Application Support folder and move these files to the Trash.
    Plugins/cttoolbar.bundle/Contents/MacOS/ct_plugins
    In the same Library folder open the ScriptingAdditions folder and move these files to the Trash.
    ctscripting.osax/Contents/MacOS/ctscripting
    Relaunch Safari.

  • Is there any way of dragging and dropping an iCal event showing in week view across to a date in the left sidebar monthly calendar?

    Hi, Im not a frequent forum poster, as most of my questions can be found already answered on them!
    This is a question Ive had for a long time and it amazes me that no-one else seems to ask it. I check at each OS upgrade but its never there...
    Is there any way of dragging and dropping an iCal event showing in week view across to a date in the left sidebar monthly calendar?
    I was able to do this years ago in MS Outlook, and utilized it all the time when I needed to push things back, now I have to open the event and select an new date in the drop-down calendar for each & every event I want to move to a new month at the end of the month.
    If its definitely not possible, how to you ask apple to consider including it - it doesnt seem like a particularly difficult task.
    Thankyou
    Andrew.

    Andrew,
    Is there any way of dragging and dropping an iCal event showing in week view across to a date in the left sidebar monthly calendar?
    No, but you can use cut/paste. Cut (⌘X) the event, then click on the week where you want to move the event, and Paste (⌘V).
    If you have a suggestion for Apple to change that method use: Apple - Mac OS X - Feedback.

  • Hello, I've updated the iPhone I have got I have a problem I hope you respond to some of the applications no longer work, such as the safari and skype and many applications are no longer working with the ios7.0.4

    Hello, I've updated the iPhone I have got I have a problem I hope you respond to some of the applications no longer work, such as the safari and skype and many applications are no longer working with the ios7.0.4

    Standard troubleshooting...
    1. Try a Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the slider.  Slide to power off.  Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the Apple logo.
    2. Try a Reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
    3. Remove apps from Recently Used (multi-tasking) list...
    - From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
    - Swipe up on the app preview card to remove it from the list
    - Press the home button when done.
    4. If still a problem restore with your backup.
    5. If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
    6. If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.

  • I apologize for my stupidity right from the start so extra points for the help! how do you get get rid of apps that you dont want ever, off of the list of waiting i guess youd call it? im beginning to think its allowing something to affect the safari?

    i started having issues with my i pad yesterday afternoon, then i noticed the upper section of the safari which was grey was now charcoal? since then searches are odd and when i click on history to erase its not there? i went into the apps to see if there might be some i missed cleaning out and not only were there, but i cannot remove them, am i doing something wrong? im not a computer person at all so any help would be greatly helpful. your humble ammature, joe.

    Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data and also Clear History
    If that doesn't work then try closing Safari via the taskbar and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
    A third option is a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
    Not sure what you mean by the 'list of waiting' (?). Do you mean that they are on your iPad's homescreens with 'waitin' against e.g. they have haven't finished downloading ?
    You can delete fully downloaded apps from your iPad's homescreens by pressing and holding any of them for a second or two and they should start to shake. Then press the 'x' in the left corner to delete the ones that you don't want, and when you've finished deleting press the home button below the iPad's screen so as to stop the apps shaking. If you don't get the 'x' on any of the apps that you've downloaded (you can't delete built-in apps) then check that Settings > General > Restrictions > Deleting Apps isn't set 'off'

  • How do you put safari web pages into icloud with the safari iCloud button?

    how do you put safari web pages into icloud with the safari iCloud button?

    What that button does is sync your tabs between your devices. So if you have multiple macs with Mountain Lion and/or devices with iOS 6 (once it comes out this fall) you can pick up where you left off. For example, let's say I have apple.com, nytimes.com, and facebook.com open on my mac, but I need to run. Later, if I need to use another computer in my household, I can just restore the tabs that I was using before on this other mac.

  • I can't get into the safari discussion board.

    and firefox and opera are soooo lame. So, I'm going to post here;
    I know I'm in the wrong board, but Firefox and Opera won't open the Safari discussion page. so here's trying here:
    Hi, I use Safari 4.0.1 (there's my problem right there, probably), and although it crashes all the time, now it won't even start up. Please help me because Firefox is sooo lousy, I keep getting "Apple Discussions no longer exist" pages (or something to that effect) every time I hit a button.
    I do a lot of editing on Wikipedia, and I'm always flipping back and forth from a page to the Top Sites page. The Top Sites page always gets the rainbow ball of death for some reason (I have "Medium" amount of Top Sites).
    I went into the Top Sites manager, un-pinned one page, and then suddenly both Safari and my Mac turned into Windows XP and took forever for anything to get done.
    Force quitting, then re-opening only results in a blank page with a rainbow death ball, and deleting 1200+ "preview" images from the cache didn't help either. Neither did a reboot.
    So I'm most likely going to install the latest version of Safari because it is faster than Firefox and less cumbersome.
    But I'm hoping someone may be able to tell me what loop or trap Safari got stuck in because that seems to be what happened:
