  • The Sims 2 crashes after installing Nightlife or Pets Expansion Packs

I'm at the end of my rope, so I thought I would see if anybody out there can help me. I'm posting this on a few boards.
I've been a huge fan of the Sims ever since the first game was released. I got my first Mac a year ago, and The Sims 2 for it for Christmas. I put off purchasing any expansion packs - I had enough fun with the base game and downloaded custom content that I did not feel justified in spending the money. Then they made Pets, and I was sorely tempted. After playing with that expansion on my sister's new Windows Vista laptop, I decided that I would get it for my Mac for my birthday in July.
After I installed the expansion pack, my game would crash during the blue startup screen. I removed custom content, reinstalled the game, and tried everything else the Aspyr tech support could think of - including sending my disc back for a replacement copy.
I've included all of our correspondence below. Maybe someone out there has had a similar problem, or can think of what could be causing this issue.
Today I tried installing the Nightlife expansion pack, and was met with the EXACT same issue. Obviously there is something wrong with my Mac or the base game, or some bit of software or code on my system is screwing things up. . .
I'd really hate to sell the expansions online and then fork over the money for a copy of Windows and the PC version of Pets (I already own the base game). I'd hate to devolve back into a Windows user =+\
7/31 I sent a message to Aspyr Support through their website:
I just installed the Pets expansion on top of the Sims 2 base game. Now it crashes before the start-up screen has finished loading. I tried removing the downloads folder and the neighborhoods folder, in case something in there was not compatible. The game still crashes.

    Greetings,
I'd recommend downloading the latest version of Quicktime from apple.com as well as our Pets patch via support.aspyr.com and see if that solves the issue. If not:
This error can occur for a number of reasons; Multiple installations of the game, unnecessary patching of the game, moving game files around after installing, installing the game to your desktop, or corruption of game files. Unfortunately a clean install is the only way to resolve this issue.
I recommend the following troubleshooting steps. Try running the Repair Disk Permissions function of the Disk Utility located in Applications/Utilities. Also, avoid installing the game to Applications or the Desktop; there are permissions conflicts that can arise when games are installed here. Games work best when they are installed in a separate games folder on the top/root level of your hard drive.
Reinstalling gets rid of any game data that may have become corrupt. Be sure to trash the game's preferences file(s) (com.aspyr."Sims2".plist) located in the Home/Library/Preferences folder. Common game file locations are Home/Library/Preferences and Home/Library/Application Support and Home/Documents when you do so. Then just trash the current copy of the game and install a new copy to the new games folder at the root of your hard drive. I'd also recommend doing a Spotlight search of your computer to make sure you've removed the game files / folders before reinstalling.
You can usually find specific removal instructions via the readme file located in the main game folder to use as a guideline for installing the game.
    (From the Sims2 readme file)
To uninstall The Sims 2 and The Sims 2 Body Shop, drag the following to the trash:
"The Sims 2" folder which contains the game and The Sims 2 Body Shop applications
    "home folder\Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2" folder
    "home folder\Library\Preferences\com.aspyr.TheSims2.plist" file
    "home folder\Library\Preferences\com.aspyr.TheSims2BodyShop.plist" file
    "home folder\Library\Preferences\com.aspyr.TheSims2PackageInstaller.plist" file
If you have Sims 2 expansions you should run the game once by launching it from the hard drive before installing any expansions. This will create a new set of preference files and allow the installers for the expansions to properly install the software.
    I hope this helps.

Thank you for your quick response. Sadly, the game still does not work. I tried all of your advice, then decided to make sure I had done everything I could possibly think of.
First, I moved my saved games (and downloads, user data, etc) to a folder on the desktop, so I could retrieve them later.
I ran the Repair Disk Permissions function.
I had the latest version of Quicktime, but I reinstalled it anyway. I also downloaded all available system updates.
I erased all of my remaining Sims data, including the preference files.
I rebooted. (not sure if this does much, but I know my old PCs worked better with reboots)
I installed the Sims 2 in a newly-created Games folder on the HD. I also installed the patch for the base game.
I played the game; it functioned properly.
I rebooted again and installed the Pets expansion and the patch.
It is behaving the same way as before - the game quits unexpectedly when the startup screen gets to "calibrating canine customization."
Oh, and I did not moved my saved data back into the game folders - I tried running it clean, first.
Is there anything else I can try? Or do I just give up and sell my expansion pack on eBay?

    Hello again,
I greatly appreciate how quickly you responded once more, but frustratingly the game is still not working. I burned my saved game info to a DVD so that I could erase every single Sim-related file on my system. I followed steps 1-16 exactly , then skipped to 29. But once I launched the game with Pets, the exact same problem occurred - it (un)expectedly closed when the startup screen got to "Calibrating Canine Customization."
I don't know what could possibly be going wrong, and it's very disappointing. Please let me know if there is anything else I should try.

    Hello,
I am sorry you are still having problems with The Sims 2. In most cases checking to make sure you have all the latest Apple updates and a fresh install will fix this problem.
Here are a few things to check for:
    1. Make sure the game is installed on the boot volume, the main hard drive.
    2. Don't put the game in your Applications folder. There are permissions conflicts that can arise when games are installed here. Install the game to the root level of your drive instead.
    3. Run the permissions repair. To do this, launch the Disk Utility located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. The second tab will allow you to repair permissions.
    4. Remove the game completely (search for all game files) and run the install again, and choose the Macintosh HD as the destination for the install. When you launch the game, leave all in-game graphics settings at the defaults. Then reinstall the patch.
Here's something else you can try. Uninstall the game again, move ALL files related to game to the trash and empty it. Do a search on your entire computer to make sure that you got everything. Disconnect any peripherals from your computer except for the keyboard and mouse, create a New User account, reboot the computer and log into the new user account. Then reinstall the game. Choose your Macintosh HD as the destination to install to, and after initially launching the game, leave all in-game graphics/resolution settings at the defaults.
    Have a nice day,

    Sorry, it's me again.
I've done everything you suggested in this and the other e-mails, to no avail.
    -my system is fully updated.
-ALL Sims 2 files trashed and emptied.
    -Permissions repair run.
    -peripherals unplugged.
    -New user created.
-Rebooted and logged in as new user.
    -Installed directly to HD.
    -Launched + closed game.
    -Installed Pets Exp.
-Launched - failed. It crashed at the very same point during startup.
-downloaded and installed patch; still failed.
I'm ready to restore my base game saved files from their DVD and sell the expansion pack on eBay.

There is one last thing to try and that is to assume there is something wrong with the Pets DVD. We offer a disc replacement service for $10 or, if you have purchased the disc in the last 90 days, it is free.
    8/16/07
I received my replacement disc today, and quickly installed it after backing up my files. The game still crashes at the same point during startup. Is it time to give up?
    8/16/07
    Hello,
I am very sorry the Pets expansion has not worked for you. I have never run into a situation where nothing will fix the problem. In all cases with the Sims 2 or expansions a disc replacement fixes the problem. I would guess that there is some obscure Apple issue causing the Pets to crash.
    Have a nice day,
    Aspyr Tech Support

I finally got the solution from a friend at the TSR forum. It was a problem with QUicktime 7.2. I needed to install this update:

  • THE SIM CARD INSERTED IN THIS IPHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED.....

Hello. I bought on Dec. 17th 2007 at Orange shop in Beausoleil (south France) an iPhone with the option of unlocking the Sim (100 Euro plus). I followed all instructions. Everything was perfect, on Dec. 24th I was able to unlock the iPhone and used with Orange sim, MonacoTelecom sim and Vodafone sim. BUT the iPhone had a problem: when in sleep mode it did't received calls. So Afer 24 hours I stopped to use, UNSAFE. After Christmas holidays I called Apple assistance, they send me UPS and I returned iPhone to Apple (Jan. 4th 2008). I received a NEW iPhone on Jan. 8th 2008, VERY RUSH. Perfect service, I thought (...making terrible error...). The iPhone was LOCKED and I wasn't able to use. Now starts all the problems and for this reason I'm writing.
I called Apple and Orange many times. Orange didn't received the documents from Apple for the changing of IMEI and Serial, for them I had the first iPhone. After many cals finally I asked Apple to send something official for the changing.
    ....Days goes on and on.......
Every day two times I called Orange, but evert time I received different versions of my situation. Everyday I tried to restore the iPhone but still simlocked.
On Jan.15th after a meeting with a lawyer I decided to make pression to Apple: infact I returned them an unlocked iPhone and I received back a locked one.
I finally was able to speak with a "supervisor" (Mr. F...) and he tried to solve the problem.
On Jan. 16th I spoke with another "supervisor" (Mr. J...) and he told me to make another time the restore, because they changed the firmware.
From now I tried to make the restore many times with Orange sim. Everything seems to go well but when I put another sim on iTunes there is a white page with:
"THE SIM CARD INSERTED IN THIS IPHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please etc etc....".
So the iphone is locked!!! Maybe is country locked, I don't know.
    Incredible, unbelievable.
From Apple they told me to wait someting from US, but until now ..... nothing, I received no news from Apple.
The bad situation is that after more than 30 days after the buy I am not able to use the hardware I bought!
I hope that someone from Apple can read this post (sorry if is so long, but with this details I think that in Apple can understand the problem).
I send in warranty an hardware with certain features that I payed to Apple and I received back it with different features.
    That's not serious.
After many days, next week I think to go by legal means if Apple France is'nt able to solve the issue.
Many thanks if someone from Apple read my post.
Many thanks if someone help me.

But who has to make another unlock? Orange told me that for them is ok and the phone is unlocked. I read on other pages that Apple has a world-database with Imei numbers. So seems Apple can also do the unlock, even for the fact that they returned me a locked phone, different from the one I sent them. The warranty is with Apple, I forgot to warite in my first post that first of all on Janauary I went to Orange shop where I bought the iPhone but they told me for every problem is Apple that has to solve.

  • I have an I phone 4 that I use in Singapore, but would like to use it in the US while on holiday. How do I cahnge out the sim card, and is there anything else that I need to do.

I have an I phone 4 that I use in Singapore, but would like to use it in the US while on holiday. How do I change out the sim card, and is there anything else that I need to do?

Ignore the other post (the one from Brendan), he has no idea what he is talking about.
Read your manual (you have a bookmark to it in Safari on your iPhone or put iBooks on your iPhone and download the manual from the iBookStore) and it will show you how to remove the microSIM from your iPhone. AT&T is not tourist friendly and does not offer a pay as you go plan for visitors with an iPhone. If you are going to be here for a short time you can probably buy a pay as you go microSIM and use it before AT&T notices, if it is going to be for a long time that won't work.
There is a 3rd party company that will sell you a microSIM that will work with AT&T but they are pretty pricey.
Finally, you can get a pay as you go microSIM from T-Mobile to work with your iPhone but you will only have EDGE data speeds.

  • "There is a problem with the SIM card in your iPhone"

I'm getting this error when I try to activate my new iPhone 4 through iTunes:
"*There is a problem with the SIM card in your iPhone.*
To activate your iPhone with this account, you will need a new, unactivated SIM card. Please use the SIM card that was provided with your new iPhone. If you are using the new SIM card, and are unable to complete activation, you can go to an Apple Retail Store or an AT&T company owned retail store to request an unactivated SIM. If you would prefer to have a replacement SIM card sent to you via overnight mail, please call us at 1-800-MY-APPLE. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused."
Now I've already been to AT&T and nothing they could do with the account settings would work, in fact they had never seen the issue before. They gave me a new SIM card and that did nothing as well. Finally they tried out a different SIM tray, and that still didn't work. I have a Genius Bar appointment at the Apple Store tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone else has this problem. Do you think that the SIM reader inside the iPhone 4 is broken?

I solved a problem I had with activating my iPhone although the error message was different from yours.
I got the message "There is something wrong with your iPhone and it cannot be activated, please bring it to your nearest Apple service".
Via a Chinese forum I found out its the SIM card witch is the problem. If the serial number of the SIM has a "letter" in it it won't work. If only numbers it will work.
I now tried it with 2 SIM cards with letters and got the message over and over again. Than tried with my only numbers SIM card and it activated instantly.

  • The Sims 2 Holiday Pack digital download?

Not sure where to post this, but I'm wondering where I can purchase the Sims 2 Holiday Pack for Mac online, and have it available as a digital download?

  • To All those suffering with the 4G LTE Router..Final Solutions (Disconnections, etc)

I wanted to post an update for everyone on this forum.. I've had several threads in here about my MBR Disconnecting randomly as well as it not
passing traffic for Citrix clients, etc.  I've spoke with some high level VZ techs and managers and found that this is all related to the firmware on
the units. The upper level people at VZ know this MBR is garbage in it's current state and are looking to get a new firmware release out soon..
who knows how soon.  The techs I worked with said the only solution for they have been able to provide is either to: 1. Assign a Static IP to the
device (which costs a lot) or 2. Try a new SIM card.   The tech I worked with handles business accts only and he personally has helped over 20 people with this same exact issue.  He said there are definite problems with the firmware and this device shouldn't have been released until these items were fixed.
I wish they would tell the poor 1st level VZ techs this same info. You can do all the resets/reboots you want and it's not going to fix the problem.
He also stated the firmware is so flaky that what works in one instance will almost never work somewhere else.. it's completely random.
Since my company does over spends over a million dollars a year with VZ they were able to get me a Static IP address..but I wasn't even able to
change the APN in the settings. He also said this is flaky bc some MBRs let you change it and others do not (even with the same firmware).  The
static IP is supposed to be automatically assigned when the device is reset to factory defaults so I tried that about 50 times and it still didn't work.
I even tried the NON-VZ Netgear N300 unit I had purchased as a test and I was able to put in the correct APN, but it too would not pull the static IP
even after several factory resets over a 2 day period. Both units were total garbage..
Finally I tried putting the SIM into an old Pantech UML290 USB modem I had and guess what??? It immediately pulled the Static IP and worked
perfectly.  I've been running the UML290 in an old Cradlepoint router and the service has been FLAWLESS for over a week now.. NO DROPPED
connections, NO FLAKY traffic blocking, etc.  Just works perfect as it should.. So I'm sorry to say this but until VZ comes out with a new firmware
release for this 4G Router you are out of luck.   I plan on using this current UML290 + Cradlepoint setup indefinitely or until they prove the issues
with the 4G router are fixed.  Wish I had better news,, but hopefully this will save some of you from sitting on hold with VZ tech support for days
as they run you in circles and tell you to call Netgear to fix the problems....

Excellent post creosote7, thank you very much!  Fortunately I came in here first before even trying to talk by phone to anyone about this.  I have exactly the issues you describe ... inability to play nice with Citrix VPN, and constant drop-offs, connection unavailables, etc.  Being the old Microsoft tech that I am, I just reboot the device and wait until it connects again, after which is usually good for an hour or so.  But I have it connected to a backup battery, so I know it's not flakiness from poor line condition.
What really puzzles me is how it worked fine for a week and then dies, just as AshLee52 reports.  I looked at my usage, and sure enough it was working fine enough to pull about a gig a day for the first 7 days I had it (I had to learn the hard way that my company put MozyPro on my laptop and set it to back up 4GB a day. AGGGH).  But then all of a sudden it drops off.  This smells very highly of Verizon throttling us rather than a firmware issue.
That said, firmware updates have been the fix for me for many a switch, router, and pc problem over the years, let's hope you're right and they release something soon.
Thank goodnes I kept my DSL ... it's slower but has been my lifeline for getting my job done.  For anyone reading, I happen to also have a Verizon 4G wireless hotspot (the little hocky puck style) as well which works fantastically at the same location, so the connectivity issues are definitely tied to this LTE Home router or the VZ home service.

  • Problems Playing the Sims 3

Here is my issue. I used to have a late 2009 Mac book Air. Recently i have come into a late 2011 edition Mac Book Pro. I installed the sims 3 with my copy of the disk, and everything worked just fine. I played had a jolly old time. I also did not have the internet at this time. I moved in with my grandpa a couple of weeks ago and he has some lowspeed internet. Upon connecting, i got a notice for a software update for the sims 3. So i updated. After updating. The sims 3 would Crash everytime i started it up. Not even letting me into the game. So i uninstalled, (multiple times) and tried downloading the updates.. Same problem persisted. Finally i tried just clean reinstall without updating.. The SAME problem persisted.. After a few more tries and a steam cleaning of anything EA on my mac book, i reinstalled AGAIN. I downloaded a single update. Now i am able to get into the game, create my sims. When i try to move into a household, the game freezes and crashes. I have tried clearing cache, removing updates. I am Lost at what to do. I just want to play the got **** game!!!

You need to tell them that their suggestions are not working.  And you should continue to post in their forum area.  It is where the Mac Sim player helpers are.Is the game compatible with your os system?

Hello! I am in a sort of predicament. My friend has recently purchased the "Sims 2 Collection" on my computer and I NEED A REFUND!! I am now down to 40 bucks and direly need that credit back! any tips? NOTE: Have already created a support ticket concerning the issue.

NOTE: Have already created a support ticket concerning the issue.
Then you have done what you need to do. It's in the hands of iTunes Support now. They either will or they won't. The policy is that all sales are final. They usually give one refund per account. If you have already received the one refund, then I doubt that you will get another.

  • How long does it take for the phone to get full service after you insert the sim card???

I got my Droid Incredible in the mail today, and inserted the sim card and somehow online I think I deactivated my old phone, and I've been waiting for my new phone to receive full service for maybe over an hour now. I cannot call customer service or anything because both my old and new phone cannot make any calls because neither of them are activated. Please help!

I had a similar issue activating by HTC DNA.  The activation instructions Verizon sends are horrible since they explicitly mention that you do not need to call in to activate your phone.  I left my SIM activation running overnight and it just didn't work.  I finally called Verizon from my work phone the next day and the agent informed me that you do need to call to activate your SIM card.  You will need to have your SIM card ready when you call (to provide the long string of numbers on the back of the card).  Hope this helps!

  • Is it possible to backup an iPhone without the SIM card?

I've been an iPhone 3G user until recently when I bought my unlocked iPhone 4S. I was informed that I need to get my SIM card clipped in order for it to fit the new phone. My situation is that I'm actually traveling in overseas at the moment and do not have my computer with me to backup my old iPhone 3G. So my question is: can I go ahead and clip my SIM card now and then backup my iPhone 3G later without any SIM card, and finally syncing my new iPhone 4S? Or must I have my SIM card in the old iPhone 3G while backing it up?

Having a SIM card in the device has no bearing on whether it will backup or sync with iTunes.
A SIM card is required to activate the device and use a carriers services (voice, data, sms).
Instead of trimming the SIM card, you are better off getting a microSIM from your carrier.  If you accidentally mess up trimming the SIM card it will become useless.

  • The Sims super collection freezes.

    Hello community,
I have recently downloaded "The Sims 2: Super Collection". For a while it worked seemlessl. But lately, every time I want to load my newly created family, it starts loading and in that process freezes.
I Have already tried to delet and reinstall the app, which didn't make it better. Though I noticed that this problem can be temporarily resolved by letting the family move out and move back in. But after a few times loading it keeps freezing again with that particular family. I created a new family, with whom the same thing happens after a while playing the sims stop moving. I can move stuff but that's it. When I log out of that house and log back in it freezes in the proases of loading.
    plz anyone with a solution?

  • Will I be able to play The Sims 2 on my MacBook Pro?

I have the mid-2012 MacBook Pro: 2.5 GHz processor, Intel HD 4000 Graphics, 4GB of memory, and masses of storage space left. Will I be able to play my PC copies of The Sims 2 using Boot Camp? I've been looking on the internet because I was unsure whether the graphics chip was good enough as it's not designed for gaming, and some people say it won't work, others say it will (presumably because it's a 10 year old game). If it will work, would I be able to install all the expansions? Our old desktop computer that it was installed on finally died at the exact moment that I suddenly became desperate to play The Sims, so I'm hoping you'll give me good news! Thanks.

It's version 10.9.4. I've not actually set Boot Camp up yet, my dad says he'll do it, but I'm going to put XP on. The base game needs 800 MHz processor, 256 Mb RAM, 3.5 Gb hard drive, and a 32 Mb T&L video card with DirectX 9.0 driver support. The expansion packs vary but need around 1.3 GHz processor, 256 MB - 1 GBRAM, 1.5 GB hard drive, and the same video card.
It's mainly the video card that I'm unsure of, as I assume the processor etc. can deal with a ten year old game but the video card isn't really designed for gaming. I'm hoping that it's not designed for gaming in the sense that it's not designed for modern games, but can cope with older ones. I've downloaded SimCity 4, The Movies, and Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 form the App Store and they're all fine.
P.S. - Ronda Wilson: I have the PC copies of the games already, so I'm kind of reluctant to buy a new game unless my games won't work. I've looked into The Sims 3 on Origin as back up plan though, because as you said it will run natively.

  • Will it play The Sims 2?

    I've got a 2GHz MacBook with 1GB Ram.
I know about integrated graphics, and so far the GFX performance of this computer are much better than the Radeon 9200 in my previous iBook.
Will i get playable FPS in The Sims 2 with Low/Med quality settings (and perhaps 800x600 res)?
Does anyone here use The Sims 2 with their MacBook - can you tell me what its like?
    Thanks, Joe.

If you install the rev. E patch (this will take you directly to the download, BTW) it works pretty well. Right now I have it on medium settings with 1152x720 res, and it is just a little worse than the iBook... but when its on 1024x780 its better than the iBook at medium settings. This what I can tell from what I remember on the iBook... but I don't play often enough to know for sure.
