The stavfs() hangs for stale NFS mount

Hi,
When the remote server from where a NFS file system is mounted is down, we get the stale NFS
mount error.
An application that just reads the entries of /etc/mnttab and does the statvfs() on all the file systems will
hang infinitely. The control is within the statvfs() call. The application goes into a uninterruptible sleep mode. Signals like SIGALARM or SIGPIPE are not handled. Only the signals like SIGTERM, SIGHUP,
SIGKILL are getting handled.
One solution which we considered was to check for the availability of the remote host before calling the
statvfs(). This can be done by sending ICMP packets to the remote host. But this method will not work
on the servers which restricts the ICMP packets (for some security reasons).
Is there any other way to avoid this problem?
Thanks in advance.
Best Regards,
Rams.

And again. Since 280 people have looked at my post and not one could help me I assume that there's no solution to my problem?
If that's true I would appreciate it if you tell me, and if there's a solution you know, or if you have any idea how to solve this, please reply.

  • When trying to export to Excel the tool hangs for 10-15 min. (1.5.1.54.40)

    When trying to export a result set after a query the tool hangs for 10-15 minutes. This is regardless of the export fileformat; xls, html etc. It seems like the problem is related to the complexity of the query: Low-cost query=export OK, High-cost query=Export Not OK (even though the number of returned records is low)
    Exporting to any fileformat from a tables data-tab is OK, the problem occurs only in combination with a query that has been ran in a Worksheet.
    Will be greatful for any hint!

    Hi,
    If you are using SQL Dev 1.5.1, you can include the column header by using
    CTRL + Shift + C (instead of CTRL + C), and paste it to Excel.
    I got this info from other forum, sorry I couldn't find which one.
    Don't use the Edit - Copy Path menu, even it uses the same shortcut.

  • The query HANGS for ever!

    hi,
    we have types which extend other types. We need this as a part of a framework in db. Over the paret type are the queue (oracle AQs) defined.
    Intermitantly, on few databases, when we try to create a type extending the same parent type with the queues running, the create type script just hangs off for ever.
    WHy does this happen? more importatly intermitantly?
    is there an approach to debug such issues? or get things working by killing some sessions etc.
    Any ideas/ pointers .. please help.
    db details:
    Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 - Prod
    PL/SQL Release 10.2.0.4.0 - Production

    TNS for Linux: Version 10.2.0.4.0 - Production

    thank u for the reply.
    Is there a way to figure out what objects are pinned. and if i figure out them then how do i un-pin them?
    But i have a type extending a type. To the best of my knowledge the objects created over types are locked (or pined). The paret type is just a declaration/ definition of how the object has to be created.

  • Upgraded Firefox is hanging. When Firefox opens none of the bookmakrs are available immediately. They hang for a monent. When opening up a window in an application (i.e., email address search) the window hangs.

    When opening Firefox, the bookmarks hang for up to 30 seconds before they can be accessed. Also have a hanging issue when opening a window/pop-up within an application (i.e., email search window).
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == After automatic upgrade

    Unless the schedule it's running on is every single time I open Firefox (including closing it & reopening it right away), I don't think that's the case. Also, I don't have any of these issues on the PC I switched back to v3.6 on. That one runs smoothly whether I run Ccleaner, registry optimizers, clear the cache & history or whatever. I thought after you first gave me the answer of deleting the session files that they must've got corrupted during the upgrade, but it seems that v4 just doesn't do a good job of retaining or maintaining those files without getting them corrupt or something.
    If this is not an issue with everyone & I'm having it on both my PCs, then v4 has an issue with something that I install on my PCs that, I guess, many others don't although I don't know what that could be and I use everything I install or have running. So, I'm just going back to what works without having to dismantle my config one prog at a time to try to find what v4 may be finicky about.
    By the way, I did check & couldn't find any cleaners that run automatically on my PCs.

  • Oracle 8i database hangs for the same amount during JDBC calls.

    Hi all,
    I have a Oracle 8i database on solaris. The database hangs for exactly 61 seconds for a random jdbc call from my Java application, i mean there is no particular pattern or a JDBC call for which the database hangs. If i choose to wait for 61 seconds it returns the results from the database but if i try to access the database with another query(SQL Plus) the first query starts executing immediately. Is that a database configuration problem or some thing else.
    And i also get some exceptions occasionally( Maximum Open Cursors exception). Are these two related?
    Any feedback is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Hugo Victor

    I have uninstalled Oracle 8i.
    Removed all the services from Windows services by deleting corresponding registry entries and deleted the Oracle folder.
    I have reinstalled Oracle 8i, this time i changed the name of global database to oracledb.
    I channged the tnsnames.ora file from DevSuite appropriately as:
    # tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: C:\DevSuiteHome_1\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = mscserver)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = ORACLEDB)
    Still it can't login using scott/tiger authentication.
    What may be the problem? Please help.

  • Toshiba 46TL938G hangs for the 20 sec hanging channel volume or input

    Hi,
    I recently bought a Toshiba 46TL938G. When it I turn it on and try to do something the system hangs for about 20 seconds, a large rotating circular icon appears in the top right hand corner of the screen (As if it's performing a start up and informing me I have to wait) then everything works fine.
    It's very frustrating as it only seems to happen when you try to do something like change the channel/volume/AV input. For example if I turn on my TV and leave it for 5 minutes it will just sit idle on the programme that's on.
    But the second I try to change the channel/Volume/Input/go into menu it hangs for the 20 seconds and then does it's thing and lets me get on with my life.
    Has anyone else experienced this and know of a fix? The firmware on my TV says it's up to date.

    Did you try to reset the TV?

  • Are nfs mounts allowed in vfstab after a flash archive restore?

    I am restoring a server using a flash archive. The vfstab on the original server contains an entry for an nfs mount. It looks like during the push of the archive to the new server, the vfstab gets saved to vfstab.orig and the nfs mount is removed from vfstab. So I added a finish script to add the nfs mount back to vfstab and now the server gets hung during S73nfs.client during reboot.
    Are nfs mounts not allowed in vfstab after a flash archive restore?

    One option is to secure the OBP with a password.
    At the OK prompt, set the security-mode to "command" and then set a password. Careful not to loose this password. With this set the only option is to "boot" without supplying the firmware password.
    Commands:
    # halt
    ok setenv security-mode = command
    ok setent security-password <enterpasswd>
    ok reset-all

  • Systemd and nfs .mount

    Hi,
    I'm trying to setup a systemd unit for my NFS mounts. I don't want to use /etc/fstab because I want an openvpn.service dependency. However, for now, I'm omitting that dependency due to debugging. Here is the current unit file I have:
    # cat host\@.mount
    [Unit]
    Description=%i mount
    DefaultDependencies=no
    Requires=local-fs.target network.target rpc-statd.service
    Conflicts=umount.target
    [Mount]
    What=host:/%i
    Where=/%i
    Type=nfs
    Options=user,async,atime,exec,rw,wsize=32768,rsize=32768
    DirectoryMode=0755
    TimeoutSec=20
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    When I try to enable this I get the famously vague error:
    # systemctl enable ./host\@mnt.mount
    Failed to issue method call: Invalid argument
    Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks!

  • Branded 9 Container NFS mounts

    Does anybody have any information on how the P2V install handles exisiting NFS mounts that were in the vfstab file? After my installation there were all commented out and changed to reflect different mount points under export.
    Thanks.

    Just to follow up on this:
    All of my strange problems (NFS unable to mount, iSCSI unable to login, vi hanging, VNC console session blank) were related to using jumbo frames on a switch that didn't support them. I had MTU=9000 set on my interfaces to try and speed up iSCSI/NFS and it turns out that causes a lot of funky network issues if your switch doesn't support it properly. The funny thing is that ping and all sorts of network tools ran flawlessly...
    Be careful with jumbo frames... just a word of warning.

  • NFS mounted logs versus locally mounted logs

    OS : Solaris 8,
    HW : Sun V-440
    We had all the logs and other binary read/
    write files on a NFS mounted FS.
    We decided to move those logs and binary
    files to a locally mounted disk. Now we see
    the application slow down considerably.
    We were expecting it to be the other way
    around (Local disk to be faster).
    Does anyone know what the reason could be ?
    Thank you.

    Anything in log files that may help id problem?
    iostat showing any problems with fs
    All references to NFS location of logs and executables updated?
    Any stale NFS mounts?
    Where on the filesystem did you relocate logs and binaries to?
    You said the application slowed down considerably. Any data to compare to? What happens if you put files back where they were? Performance improve? Capture stats, move stuff back to local fs, and compare. Where has performance degraded?

  • Problem with reader version 11.0.2 when it starts up and I open a file, All hangs for 30sec

    I am using windows 7 on a 64bit laptop.
    When I open a file the sytem hangs for over 30sec saying 'program not responding' the wakens up and works fine till I open another file?

    Thanks for your feedback. I have now tried that but does not appear to change the situation noticeably.
    I have tried raising priority using a program for managing the 2 memory cores and this appears to improve
    things considerably as one might expect but probably only masks the basic problem.
    I am assuming that I have added the reader_sl.exe program file to the start-up sequence, since this is
    not as straightforward with windows 7 as it was with previous versions.

  • Java.sql functions intermittently hanging for 60 seconds

    I have an Oracle 8.1.6 application on Solaris with Tomcat 3.1 using JDBC to talk to the database. I am using the thin driver for JDK 1.2.2. I moved a box from development to production and changed the network information in the database and in Solaris. Now I have strange behavior where about 5% of the time functions such as Connection.prepareStatement, ResultSet.close, and PreparedStatement.close will sleep for 60 seconds. Then they proceed as normal. It is always 60 seconds, never a hard deadlock. The application is multithreaded, being inside Tomcat and all. The other strange behavior is that when another thread accesses the database, the first thread that was sleeping will wake up and proceed as normal. I will try to switch to the OCI driver, but I think it is very strange that the thread hangs for exactly 60 seconds inside the calls to the JDBC driver. The other 95% of the time it works great.

    We switched the driver to OCI instead of thin. It looks like it is working OK now. I suppose it was some strange behavior in the thin driver.
