There seems to be no defined database cache

Hello, looking at the parameters in this database there appears to be no cache. This shows that AMM is turned off but also that there is no db cache. How is cache being allocate if these are all 0? I am running Oracle 10.2.0.3 on AIX
5300-09. Are there other parameters to look at. Shouldn't db_cache_size be set to something?
sga_max_size ==> 908M
shared_pool_size ==> 252M
db_cache_size ==> 0
db_16k_cache_size ==> 0
db_2k_cache_size ==> 0
db_32k_cache_size ==> 0
db_4k_cache_size ==> 0
db_8k_cache_size ==> 0
sga_target == > 0
I just noticed that this database is using the old method:
db_block_buffers ==> 49152
Should I be setting this to 0 and using db_cache_size instead?
Thank you,
David

Db block buffers would be used to set the buffers within the cache.

You need to find out that why the setting of the db cache size was set to zero? Are you using any setting of VLM(Very Large Datbase) or somethng in your db?

  • Is there a difference between Web and Database Cache

    What, if any, is the difference between Web Cache and Database Cache?

    There is good documentation in the form of PDF files at the following general URL
    "http://otn.oracle.com/products/ias"
    and specifically at:
    http://technet.oracle.com/docs/products/ias/doc_index.htm
    I have read them all and most things are documented in great detail.
    I'm trying to get the Web Cache working but it core dumps immediately after trying to start it. I had no install errors reported and everything else I have tested seems to work. If you get it working could you please send me a note on anything special you did? I really need the Web Cache to work.

  • Using In-Memory Database Cache option need help

    Hi,
    I need some help:
    I am using Oracle 10g Server Release 2
    For Clientele activilty I am using Oracle Client where the Application resides.
    For Better performance I want to use the In-Memory Database Cache option Times-Ten Database.
    Is it possible to do so where there is Oracle Database Server Relaease 2 and in the Client there is Times-Ten In-Memory Database Cache?
    Any help will be needful for me

    In-Memory Cache is a server-side cache. I can not see where there would be any value putting it on the client side though given the license cost per CPU core I am sure the entire Oracle sales force would gladly disagree with me.

    I have been interested in how lightroom uses the catalog so was poking around a backup of the catalog.  I am a database administrator and I found it rather concerning that although the database (catalog) is pretty well designed, there is no referential integrity defined or enforced. This is non-standard practice and could well be the source of corrupt catalogs I have seen many people complain about. I would strongly recommend the developers modify the catalog and adopt best practices if they want to improve the stability of Lightroom and the catalog.

    I would imagine that data integrity is not enforced for performance reasons. In a closed environment like LR where the application has complete control over the data, enforcing data integrity may not be worth the performance hit. Often what is done in an environment like this is to have data integrity on in test environments which would expose data integrity bugs but where the impact of performance is low. In "production" it is then turned off to get as much performance as possible. I would say there are many more complaints about performance than corrupt catalogs. And corrupt catalogs are more likely due to interruptions in writing to the catalog (like crashes, backups or dropbox activity while LR is running, etc). Data integrity would not help in these cases as they are outside the databases control.

  • "There was an error opening the database for the library "~/Pictures/Apert"

    Hey everyone,
    There's already another discussion thread about this at the link below, but the problem was never actually resolved. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2343014&tstart=0&messageID=116 67261#11667261
    So I stumbled across this problem where Aperture 3 will display the following error when opening the image library.
    There was an error opening the database for the library “~[path]/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.
    One user suggested navigating to the actual library, and ⌘⌥-clicking the library to open it with the Aperture Library First Aid dialog. This however, did not work for me. I still received the error messages upon ⌘⌥-clicking the library.
    Here's a little hack I discovered for those of you still struggling. It doesn't fix the problem (leaves quite a large dent remaining actually), but hopefully someone can cultivate what little I discovered.
    ⌥-click Aperture (not the library)
    You should get to the library selection dialog box. Create a new library (bottom right corner) and remember the location of the new library. Put a few random pictures in the new one.
    Close Aperture
    ⌃-click both the old and new libraries and "Show Package Contents."
    Open the folder "Database" in both libraries.
    Cross check the folders to see if the old library is missing files that are in the new library. If your old library is missing some files (mine was), drag the missing files from the new library to the old one.
    Close both folders.
    ⌘⌥-click the old library.
    NOW, I got the Aperture Library First Aid dialog.
    Rebuild the library (3rd option)
    Wait a while.
    Aperture should open up with a folder named "Recovered Folder." Within this folder will be a SINGLE project named "Recovered Project" with ALL the images from your old library. There may be a few albums there too, but mine were all empty so it didn't matter in my case. To my knowledge, I lost all the adjustments I performed too.
    This is as far as I got. I have much of my library backed up, so I only needed to copy the most recent photos into the backup. I am NOT reorganizing and re-editing pictures in this one!
    As Aperture is a photo-organizing and photo-editing software, I understand that this by no means fixes the problem, since you lose all organization and editing. But it enables one to at least view the images lost. Hopefully a more knowledgable hacker else can figure out how to fix this completely. Unfortunately, I simply don't have the time to continue messing with this.
    Good luck to anyone else having issues! I understand the frustration you must be facing, its freaky having years worth of images simply disappear! After this incident, I'm definitely going to configure Time Machine to perform more frequent backups, since my latest backup was already a couple weeks old.

    Hey All,
    To my horror I have a similar problem and your solution didn't seem to help. To be specific, I get the error:
    "There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Pictures/Aperture Library_2.aplibrary" Everytime I try to run Aperture. This happened because my Apple computer shut off completely (due to bad battery) while importing photos from a memory card.
    I've tried "option + command" while clicking the aperture application and that gave me the same error message without any other option except to quit the program. I tried "option + command" and clicked the library package but that didn't work either. I tried creating a new aperture library, opening it which I did successfully, and then switching to my main one but that didn't work.
    Does anyone know away to get it to work again and have the edits still there?
    I'm a professional photographer and have thousands of photos or so in the library so this is distressing. The master files for the photos are located on an external hard drive, but I'm not sure how to access them in aperture. Are all the edits on the photographs are in the external hard drive or the aperture library. Is there any other way to resolve this issue without losing the edits?
    Does apple have a support number I can call? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • There seems to be an issue with opendns free servers

    ''(Locked. Not a support question. See bold text for reasons of locking -m)''
    This is more of a "I found it" than a question as this seems to be an issue with the opendns free DNS servers related to certain torrent sites and the duckduckgo search engine. However any thoughts are appreciated.
    While looking for a solution I followed troubleshooting steps found here to no avail regarding cookies (I'm accepting them from everyone including third party cookies and their dogs), clearing cookies (do that all the time as a matter of routine, did it again several times), clearing the cache (did that, got the T-shirt, now I'll never be naked) and checked the about:config setting (I forget which one but it was already set to 20, the default)
    Note that I can eliminate these issues completely by setting my DNS to "automatic" however I've been using opendns free DNS servers for years and have changed nothing except when troubleshooting this issue.
    The following is a detailed description. It can be confusing if you don't read it carefully:
    I had this happen on several torrent sites however I can get through on others but when I choose the .torrent link I get the same problem on most like at: http://kickass.to/movies/genre/news/ and the KAT mirrors... on KAT I can get to the page but the .torrent links are at http://torcache.net and I am unable to get those .torrents at all. (getting the "the page isn't redirecting properly" Firefox error message and the very long http://guidetest.a.id.opendns.com/?url=guidetest%2E (goes on forever) URL
    I'll post a few links that I've tried (just to see if they work) below.
    http://www.torrentz.eu/ - can't see the page at all, I get the "the page isn't redirecting properly" Firefox error message and it redirects to the URL: http://guidetest.a.id.opendns.com/?url=g...Ecom%(goes on for something like a couple of hundred characters)
    Same issue with several other torrent sites...
    lazypirate.net I can't get through at all - same issue
    http://extratorrent.cc/ - no problem with pages or .torrents
    http://isohunt.to/ - again no problem with pages or .torrents
    Particular torrents I get the:"the page isn't redirecting properly" Firefox error message and it redirects to the URL: guidetest.a.id.opendns.com/?url=guidetest%2Ea%2Eid (blah blah forever) are:
    http://thetorrent.org/A5F7D7D92D8CDE2576...9B.torrent : (getting the "the page isn't redirecting properly" Firefox error message and the very long http://guidetest.a.id.opendns.com/?url=guidetest%2E (goes on forver) URL
    I can go on to list individual .torrents but I think you get the idea...
    I've had this issue with more than a few torrents over the last couple of days and can't remember them all but further checking does seem like it's either particular torrent sites I can't access at all or on sites I can access but store their .torrent files on either torcache.net or thetorrent.org so there seems to be mixed issues, being able to see some pages but not get .torrent files from those sites if they're stored somewhere else.
    On duckduckgo I get the "this site is untrusted" error.
    Again, when I abandon the opendns DNS servers I've been using for years and go to "automatic" both of these issues disappear with no other changes. and I've done that several times just to verify the problem and even confirmed that the opendns server addresses are correct, which they are the same ones I've used for years.
    I've emailed opendns and described the issue and they are completely confused and tell me "it must be your settings"
    '''Although this doesn't seem to be a Firefox or a Windows issue, I'm using FF 28.0 on win XP Pro SP3, legal OEM copy, Pentium D, 3.66 GHz, and 4 GB or Ram (3.65 GB of RAM recognized by XP, this is normal)'''
    '''Again, this issue only happens with the opendns free DNS servers I've been using for years and vanishes completely when I choose the automatic DNS setting and has only been happening a few days.'''
    I have screenshots of the errors and thought there was a way to post them here but I don't see that.
    The error on torrent sites is "The page isn't redirecting properly. FF has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete. (and goes on to say blah blah cookies blah blah that I've checked and rechecked)
    The error on duckduckgo is "This Connection is Untrusted. You have asked Firefox to connect securely to duckduckgo.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure." blah blah (you probably know the rest). I expect that I could add an exception but again the problem doesn't happen when using automatic DNS server detection.
    I have no problems on other sites that I see.

    Here are the screenshots for what it's worth.
    Not sure why I can't post them in the original post.<br>
    <b>Mod edit: See [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=718813 bug 718813]</b>
    '''Again, when I set my DNS server to automatically detect the servers both problems disappear and I have no issues at all.'''
    IMO opendns is either doing this on purpose (unlikely) or they're under some sort of attack/being used to attack the specific torrent sites although I'm open to other explanations. I believe using the automatic setting for DNS is using my own ISP's DNS servers (which again, work fine... but still...)
    I'd rather not use Google's public DNS servers as Google is to commercial these days and I think there's potential privacy issues.
    '''Again I have changed the setting for DNS servers back and forth several times to duplicate/verify the issue(s)... and the issues only happen with the opendns servers.'''

  • "In-Memory Database Cache" option for Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition

    Hi,
    In one of our applications, we are using TimesTen 5.1.24 and Oracle 9i
    databases (platform - Solaris 9i).
    TimesTen holds application information which needs to be accessed quickly
    and Oracle 9i is a master application database.
    Now we are looking at an option of migrating from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10g
    database. While exploring about Oracle 10g features, came to know about
    "In-Memory Database Cache" option for Oracle Enterprise Edition. This made
    me to think about using Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition with "In-Memory
    Database Cache" option for our application.
    Following are the advantages that I could visualize by adopting the
    above-mentioned approach:
    1. Data reconciliation between Oracle and TimesTen is not required (i.e.
    data can be maintained only in Oracle tables and for caching "In-Memory
    Database Cache" can be used)
    2. Data maintenance is easy and gives one view access to data
    I have following queries regarding the above-mentioned solution:
    1. What is the difference between "TimesTen In-Memory Database" and
    "In-Memory Database Cache" in terms of features and licensing model?
    2. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option integrated with Oracle 10g
    installable or a separate installable (i.e. TimesTen installable with only
    cache feature)?
    3. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option same as that of "TimesTen Cache
    Connect to Oracle" option in TimesTen In-Memory Database?
    4. After integrating "In-Memory Database Cache" option with Oracle 10g, data
    access will happen only through Oracle sqlplus or OCI calls. Am I right here
    in making this statement?
    5. Is it possible to cache the result set of a join query in "In-Memory
    Database Cache"?
    In "Options and Packs" chapter in Oracle documentation
    (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b14199/options.htm
    #CIHJJBGA), I encountered the following statement:
    "For the purposes of licensing Oracle In-Memory Database Cache, only the
    processors on which the TimesTen In-Memory Database component of the
    In-Memory Database Cache software is installed and/or running are counted
    for the purpose of determining the number of licenses required."
    We have servers with the following configuration. Is there a way to get the
    count of processors on which the Cache software could be installed and/or
    running? Please assist.
    Production box with 12 core 2 duo processors (24 cores)
    Pre-production box with 8 core 2 duo processors (16 cores)
    Development and test box with 2 single chip processors
    Development and test box with 4 single chip processors
    Development and test box with 6 single chip processors
    Thanks & Regards,
    Vijay

    Hi Vijay,
    regarding your questions:
    1. What is the difference between "TimesTen In-Memory Database" and
    "In-Memory Database Cache" in terms of features and licensing model?
    ==> Product has just been renamed and integrated better with the Oracle database - Times-Ten == In-Memory-Cache-Database
    2. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option integrated with Oracle 10g
    installable or a separate installable (i.e. TimesTen installable with only
    cache feature)?
    ==> Seperate Installation
    3. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option same as that of "TimesTen Cache
    Connect to Oracle" option in TimesTen In-Memory Database?
    ==> Please have a look here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/timesten/quickstart/cc_qs_index.html
    This explains the differences.
    4. After integrating "In-Memory Database Cache" option with Oracle 10g, data
    access will happen only through Oracle sqlplus or OCI calls. Am I right here
    in making this statement?
    ==> Please see above mentioned papers
    5. Is it possible to cache the result set of a join query in "In-Memory
    Database Cache"?
    ==> Again ... ;-)

  • Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database VS Oracle In-Memory Database Cache

    Hi,
    What is difference in Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database VS Oracle In-Memory Database Cache.
    For 32 bit on windows OS i am not able to insert data's more than 500k rows with 150 columns (with combinations of CHAR,BINARY_DOUBLE,BINARY_FLOAT, TT_BIGINT,REAL,DECIMAL,NUMERIC etc).
    [TimesTen][TimesTen 11.2.2.2.0 ODBC Driver][TimesTen]TT0802: Database permanent space exhausted -- file "blk.c", lineno 3450, procedure "sbBlkAlloc"
    I have set Perm size as 700 mb,Temp size as 100mb
    What is the max size we can given for PermSize,TempSize,LogBufMB for 32 bit on windows OS.
    What is the max size we can given for PermSize,TempSize,LogBufMB for 64 bit on windows OS.
    What is the Max configuration of TT for 32 bit what i can set for Perm size Temp size.
    Thanks!

    They are the same product but they are licensed differently and the license limits what functionality you can use.
    TimesTen In-Memory Database is a product in its own right allows you to use TimesTen as a standalone database and also allows replication.
    IMDB Cache is an Oracle DB Enterprise Edition option (i.e. it can only be licensed as an option to an Oracle DB EE license). This includes all the functionality of TImesTen In-Memory Database but adds in cache functionality (cache groups, cache grid etc.).
    32-bit O/S are in general a poor platform to try and create an in-memory database of any significant size (32-bit O/S are very limited in memory addressing capability) and 32-bit Windows is the worst example. The hard coded limit for total datastore size on 32-bit O/S is 2 GB but in reality you probably can;'t achieve that. On Windows the largest you can get is 1.1 GB and most often less than that. If you need something more than about 0.5 Gb on Windows then you really need to use 64-bit Windows and 64-bit TimesTen. There are no hard coded upper limit to database size on 64-bit TimesTen; the limit is the amount of free physical memory (not virtual memory) in the machine. I have easily created a 12 GB database on a Win64 machine with 16 GB RAM. On 64-bit Unix machines we have live database of over 1 TB...

  • Forms/Reports: Role of the Database cache and Web cache

    Hello oracle experts,
    I am running a purely Forms and Reports based environment (9iAS).
    My question are:
    a. Is it possible to use features from the Web Cache and
    Database Cache to boost the performance of my applications?
    b. Are all components monitorable from the OEM?
    Please guide me so that i can configure my OEM to monitor my
    forms and reports services.
    thanks in advance for your reply
    Kind regards
    Yogeeraj

    Hi BradW,
    The way this is supposed to be done in Web Cache is by keeping separate copies of a cached page for different types of browsers distinguished by User-Agent header.
    In case of cache miss, Web Cache expects origin servers to return appropriate version of the page based on browser type, and the page from the origin server is just forwarded back to browser.
    Here, if the page is cacheable, Web Cache retains a separate copy for each type of User-Agent header value.
    And when there is a hit on this cached page, Web Cache returns the version of page with the User-Agent header that matches the request.
    Check out the config screen titled "Header Association" for this feature.
    About forwarding requests to different origin servers based on User-Agent header value, Web Cache does not have such capability.

  • How can i define database name in oracle ADI

    Hai Friends,
    I am facing a problem when i am going to define database name in oracle ADI there is a error u can enter minimum 6 char database name but my database name is PROD it is only 4 char long. how can i define can i will change the database name. Please suggest me.
    If u have any query regarding oracle apps plse discuss with me.
    Many thanks
    Ghanshyam khetan

    Database is used internally by ADI and does not have any relationship to the name of your database.
    Using ADI I am able to create a database with the following:
    Name - My Wacky Database
    GWYUID and FNDNAM as usual
    Connect String - VIS
    I'm able to signon and work successfully with that definition. The connect string is more important in this scenario as that tells the networking layer which database to actually talk to. As you can see here mine is only three characters.

  • UNABLE TO FIX: "There was an error opening the database for the library"

    Like many others I have received the "There was an error opening the database for the library" error message today after a mid-Aperture processing session crash. However, unlike others I have been unable to fix the database...
    I have trashed all prefs, tried merging with a new library, tried repairing permissions, repairing the database, AND rebuilding the database, and have tried disk utility. Nothing works. Repair permissions did it's job, but didn't fix it. Repair Database doesn't even start to work and the Aperture utility quits immediately. Rebuild Database crunches away for about a minute then stops, and eventually quits itself with no error message.
    Aperture works fine with other databases, just not my main one. I'm worried that maybe it won't rebuild because the library is 500 gigs and I only have 200 gigs of free space, but that's pure speculation.
    Anybody out there experienced this same issue and come up with a solution? I know I can pull my masters out of the Aperture package, but I have 500 gigs of edits too... anyway to force rebuild the database by tossing the database files in the package or something?
    Thanks!

    Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. Even with the 420 gig library on the drive I had 520 gigs free (1TB drive). In any case since I had made a duplicate of the library I began to pull files from the Aperture Library > Database directory and I seemed to have fixed it enough to allow Aperture to Rebuild the Database.
    I ended up tossing all the .plist files and the Library.apdb file in the Database directory within the Aperture Library. After doing so I was able to properly rebuild and all is right with the world.

    Cache Hit ratio 47.99The fact that you get two different values for "the same thing" is a clue that (a) your SQL statement is suspect and (b) your logic is flawed.
    You SQL is going to give you some kind of (meaningless) average since the database started up. The report you showed looks like part of an AWR or statspack report which will be covering a short interval of time. The difference between the two percentages may mean the two approaches are using different formula, or it may mean that the result is highly dependent on the time window.
    Since you have access to AWR/statspack - run off a report for a (short) interval when the system is performing well, and for when the system is performing badly, and compare them.
    As a starting point you could post the two sections "Load Profile" and "Top 5 Timed Events" to the forum for initial comment. If you do so, please make sure you use the "code" tags (see end of post) to make the output readable or you may get no replies.

  • Database cache settings for 4.13 on NT 4

    The database cache settings and the documentation have always been
    confusing.
    I have about 35000 entries in my directory. If I have enough available ram
    should I try to put all the entries into ram? The default setting is a 1000,
    should I change it to 35000? Will I notice any great speed increases.
    And the second setting has to do with index cache. Should I try to get that
    into ram also? My id2entry.db2 file is about 40MBs. Should I change the
    default from 10MBs to 40MBs? Will there be a significant increase in speed?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Russ H for your quick reply.  I am still fairly new to FCP X coming from using FCE not iMovie.
    The project I'm working on I had already started before posting yesterday.  Is it possible to change the settings for what I have already done, or no I need to start all over again?
    Thanks again
    Matt

  • Logic behind database cache - war behind complexity - funny

    Guys, help ne out...
    I know that you want to separate application server and database server to different machines so that you will not just be taxing one machine. That is you want a database server as a back end to service database requests...You want your application server as a middle tier on another machine to coordinate clients request and database servicing...
    Now you put in a cache on the application server w/c really is an oracle instance doing "replication" functions with the database server...Don't you get the same problem as before --- "Application and Database" on the same machine --- Besides, the database server also has to do "synchronization" with this "cache", won't this be an added "procedure" for the database...Might as well, just use the J2ee server Oracle 8i and use a webserver to
    KIS!S.
    Actually, I am really frustrated with my Database cache installation...it hungs on me by 98 % saying that it cannot resolve tnsnames with the origin database...If you go looking at other topics posted by others,,it seems that a lot has the same problem as mine...but, I cannot really find a decent, responsive reply from an Oracle rep to help us guys out...You'd think, they do not know how to resolve the issue..Oh, yeah they say, that check your listener and tnsnames.ora, funny thing is if you use NET 8 Assistant, it will reject the default tnsnames.ora service name <HOST>-icache because you have a "-" in the name. So much so for their war against complexity...

  • Oracle Database Cache

    After installing Data Base cache Succesfully.
    I invoked my appilcation and runned some reports and forms. But I could not see any Hits/misses in the Cache manager statistics.
    But if I am executing it in Back end at SQL Prompt, those are visible in Hit/Misses statistics.
    1) How can I make my application to use Database Cache?
    2) Also I want to Know if my application is using Web Cache or not. Is there any way to Check this out.
    Pls. help me. I am running out of time

    Thanks for your reply. Infact I saw your question before I posted my question. Actually that answer will not suffice for me.
    I invoked my application and ran some reports. Since report contains SQL statements, The Hit/Misses statistics has to show whether that particular SQL is a Hit or Miss. But, its not showing anything, But if I run the SQL at Backend it's showing in the Statistics.
    Now I dont know how to make my application to use database cache.
    Any more clues.....
