Thin Driver can't connect

I'v got a Novell 5x server with oracle 8 database running. The WEBDB wouldn't run so I'm using Netscape Enterprise server. I can perform a loopback test from the server (LOAD TNSPNG80 WEBFS-TCP.WORLD) and get a reply in 930ms. I can log into SQL 8 from a workstation and can perform a simple query (SELECT ENAME FROM EMP) and get a list of enames. I've set my CLASSPATH on the server to include the CLASSES111.zip file on both my server and workstation. I've edited the JdbcApplet.java and set the URL to WEFFS-TCP.WORLD and set the port to 1521. The DriverManager registers but the getConnection fails with [security.Couldn't connect to 'webfs-tcp.world' with origin from 'local-classpath-classes']
Any help ?

Couldn't tell from the description, but are the RDBMS and webserver on the same box? If not the security violation is legit. Use the net 8 connection manager to proxy the connection or sign the applet for the browser being used. Refer to the applet security tutorial on the Sun web site for more details (developer.netscape.com has a good one too).

FIOS - IMG 1.9 - Activate eSata drive - Can't connect to server

Just got updated to the new guide here in the Los Angeles area! Trying to activate an external drive. Says it's trying to activate, and then it says "Unable to connect to the server. Please try again later."
Anyone experience this? I've got a 7232, new image, and drive connected. It's an older esata external, but I don't even see the access leds on the drive do anything. If the drive is the problem, would the dvr say something about "this esata drive doesn't work" as opposed to saying it can't connect to "the server"?

Figured it out, Plug in your drive...yank the power on the Dvr...wait 15 sec. Let the dvr boot back up. I didn't even have to try and activate the drive ...the dvr asked me about it once I hit menu to watch tv. At least in my case it didn't work until the dvr booted with the esata drive powered and plugged in during boot.

How many external drives can i connect to Pavillion p7-1154

I want to know if I can have two external drives attached to our P7-1154 hp pavillion desktop computer. I do have a spare USB port to make the connection. I already have one WD external Drive attached, which is rated USB3, 2TB Drive. The one I want to add is also a WD drive, a USB2 USB3, meaning it is a USB2, but is compatible with a USB3. It is a 1 TB drive.
When I originnaly attached the current USB3, 2TB drive, I immediately had a new folder come up named MY BOOK (K) and that is where I back up all my data.
I am assuming that when I attach the new, 1 TB drive to the empty USB port I will Immediately get another MY BOOK folder but with a different name, probably MY BOOK (K3) , or something like that.
My real Question I guess, is whether the Computer will recognize this as a different drive and give it a different name, or whether the computer might not be able to accept a second drive.
I do not want to take any chance of confusing the computer in any way, and so that is why I posted this question.
I posted this question in another forum about a month ago and did get one response, but did not get an answer. The responder wanted to know the rating of the two drives and wanted to know why I needed a second external drive. I provided him with the USB and TB ratings, and told him I just wanted the additional security of having our data on two external drives. I had one external drive on a different computer a couple of years ago and I accidentally dropped it, and was not able to recover any of the data. So I want to have two drives on this P7-1154 Pavillion Desktop. I did not hear back from him, so am posting in this forum.
I would appreciate any comments, information, or suggestions.

Physically you can attached more than one external hard drive. I do that all the time. Your PC is equipped with multiple USB ports so you shouldn't have an attachment issue. If the application supporting MY BOOK has issues with multiple MY BOOK devices attached to your PC then you need to seek a solution from the MY BOOK manufacturer.
So to answer your question, yes your PC will support multiple USB external storage devices at the same time.
If your real question is, does my PC support multiple MY BOOK external USB devices?, then you should seek advice from the MY BOOK manufacturer.

LaCie 1TB external hard drive can not connect to E4200

I have my LaCie 1TB external hard drive plugged into the USB-port of the Linksys E4200 so I can access that drive wireless.
However, in my disk management (via Cisco Connect), it does not show under Storage > Disk.
How can I solve this so I can access this hard drive from any computer in the network?

Connect the hard drive directly to the computer and make sure that your computer can detect the hard drive.
If it is detected and working properly on your computer then connect the hard drive the USB port on the router.

Win32 Thin Driver Cannot Connect

Help. I have a strange problem. I have an
Oracle 8i running on a Solaris machine.
I'm trying to connect to it from a
Windows 95 machine using the Oracle thin
driver. The connection works several times
but then I start getting "SQLException: The
Network Adapter could not establish the
connection". If I restart the
listener process on the server, I can again
connect from Windows 95 successfully for a
few more times.
Strangely, connecting from
another Solaris machine by the thin driver
works 100% of the time.
BTW, I'm using JDBC1.2.2 and 8.1.6 Thin
Driver. I've set the Oracle 8i to allow
50 processes.
Has anyone seen this problem before? Any

Hi Zhang,
I found the problem. Windows requires more
listener dispatcher processes than Solaris.
So to fix the connection problem, increase
the dispatcher. If your database SID is
SAMP, then locate initSAMP.ora and change
"mts_max_dispatchers=5" to "mts_max_dispatchers=10". You can also run "dbassist" to do it. Restart the database. The problem should be solved.

Oracle JDBC Thin Driver and Firewall Problem

Hi!
We have Oracle 8.1.5 and Websphere App Server. There is a
firewall between the two. A servlet creates a connection pool
(not that of Wesphere's). The frontend is JSP/HTML (no applets).
The servlet uses the Oracle JDBC Thin Driver for DB Connections.
The problem is - Once the connection is freed, the connection
pool is not being able to retrieve it and hence it created
another one, thus reaching the max. # of connections and the
system hangs. Restarting the DB service flushes the connection
and the application starts running again...
There was a similar problem discussed in this forums long ago. I
have not yet tried mentioning the firwall port and IP in the
connection string. But apart from that, is there any other
setting I need to do (on firewall or for the connectionstring)
to deal with this problem?
Someone had suggested to punch a hole in the firewall for the DB
port - but we can not really do that in the current scenario...
I would appreciate if anyone could share their experience
regarding how they resolved this issue.

I would recommend using the thin driver where ever possible, their are
certain problems with thin driver which are more in the area of XA support
you can check weblogic documentation for pointers on this. Oracles latest
thin driver is pretty stable as they have fixed a bunch of problems.
heres how to use thin driver:
create the connection pool using the following url
jdbc:oracle:thin:@<mc-name or ip-address>:<port-no>:<oracle sid>
and driver: oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver
You dont have to install the thin driver its bundled with the product.

HT201250 If using Time Machine with an external drive, can I just use it occasionally for back up, say once per week and have it disconnected in between backups?

When using TM with an external drive, can I connect and use it occasionally for backup and disconnect it between backups, say one backup per week? Or does it need to be connected all the time when the computer is on?

TimeMachine works better if it's nearly always connected.
For addtional backup like what your needing, consider a bootable clone in addition to TM.

Thin driver connection in oracle8i(8.1.5) on Linux with JDK1.2.2

Problem in connecting to database using oracle jdbc thin driver

hi
i am trying to connect to a database using oracle thin driver.
i am getting following error:
java.sql.sqlexception:Io exception: the network adapter could not establish the connection
Io exception: the network adapter could not establish the connection
the connection string has the property of using a dedicated server
for this reason i have put USE_DEDICATED_SERVER=ON in sqlnet.ora file...
we did not face this problem while connecting to other databases which do not have the property of dedicated server in their connection string in tnsnames.ora file.
please suggest a solution for this.

If you are using the thin driver, sqlnet.ora does not come into play. None of Oracle networking does. That is one of the great things about using the thin driver, no need to have the client installed.
That error is due to incorrect connection info you are supplying or the machine you are connection from can't ping the machine it is trying to connect to.

I have no problem with my code connecting to an Oracle 8 database, just 9i.
I'm trying to debug in Visual Cafe (JDK 1.1.7) and have both the classes111.zip and the nls_charset11.zip in my CLASSPATH.

If you're using 8i 8.1.7.1 or 8i 8.1.7.0 thin JDBC drivers on NT, then you can get them to connect to 9i by applying the 8i 8.1.7.1 Patch available at:
http://technet.oracle.com/software/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/solsoft.html
You might have to register/login first.
Basically, it's just a case of replacing a class already in your classes111.zip or classes12.zip with the class in the patch.
Took me a while to find this, but it worked first time after patching. Hope this helps.

Can I connect to Oracle server7.1 through Java-JDBC using the latest thin drivers???

MY Current requirement is to connect to multiple oracle 7.1( and other variants) servers running on different operating systems, through Java/JDBC.
My FIrst question is, can i connect to older versions of database using latest drivers?
I could connect to the server running on SCO-oracle 7.1 using SQLNet8.1.7 under windows. But the same is not happening when the client is on Linux.But I need to connect from linux
It says ORA-03113 - End of communication channel.
What may be th problem.
If any one could show some pointers where I can get more information about this problem would be helpfull

I tried the classpath suggestion above (not the one modifying the .xml file) , but it didnt work for me , I am using WLI 10.3.1 and trying to connect DB on 8.1.7 V . I downloaded the classes12.jar and the ojdbc14.jar file from the oracle and placed in lib and the even included the classpath , but i again got the same exception .
All this while i was selecting the option Oracle Driver Thin from the DataBase Driver when creating the connection pool from console . I tried with "BEA Oracle Driver (Type 4)" and it worked for me .. Although the option "BEA Oracle Driver (Type 4)" lists only the DBs from 9.0.1 to 11 G , but in my case using this driver i am able to connect to Oracle DB 8.1.7 . So all you guys if it classpath doesnt fix the issue try out by selecting Driver , "BEA Oracle Driver (Type 4)" .
Manoj , this will fix the Connection pool part of the ques, but for the java part Try to load the Driver class "weblogic.jdbc.oracle.OracleDriver" before connecting to DB with Class.forName.
