Thinkpad S430 Samsung 850 EVO SSD support

Hi I have replaced the original hard drive in my Thinkpad s430 with a Samsung 850 EVO SSD and done a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit Once its booted up its works perfectly, but I have terrible trouble getting it to boot reliably. I will often end up with "Attempting Automatic Repair" bootloop followed by blue screen of death with Unexpected I/O Error Error code 0xc00000e9 Sometimes entering the BIOS and then exiting again will get it to boot up successfully. I've tried everything I can download from Lenovo website latest BIOS update 2.60, lates chipset update, lates SATA/AHCI storage controller update etc. Most likely cuplrit I think is the SATA/AHCI controller driver QuestionsDoes anyone have a Samsung 850 EVO SSD running successfully as the internal hard drive in an S430?Are there any drivers or firmware updates that need to be applied to the Samsung Drive or the S430 to get the two to work reliably together? When my S430 does boot up with the SSD it takes about 2-3 minutes. The old hard drive which is ten times slower boots up to login screen in about 30 seconds. Need help please?

Yes, you can.

  • Any known issues installing Samsung 840 EVO SSD in a T540p 20BE?

After reading the "Hardware Maintenance Manual" for the Thinkpad T540p, and the installation guide for the Samsung 840 EVO SSD, this looks pretty straightforward.  But I thought I'd be careful and ask here if there are any pitfalls I should watch out for.
I'm planning on using the Samsung Data Migration software to migrate everything from the old drive to the SSD.
Has anyone here installed one of these Samsung 840 EVO SSD's?  Is it as straightforward as it looks?

Yes it is. Its wizard will guide you through the process, but just remember, that booting from your newly cloned drive, you must boot it from within your computer, not through an external USB connection.
If that isn't working, you have done something wrong, but it's no problem as your original drive can be put back into the machine and the cloning program run again with different settings if required.

  • How do I format new Samsung 850 Pro SSD in my 2012 Mac Mini

So my 12 year old is frustrated by the slower speed of his mac mini, and with some of his birthday money and my expertise (which I hope to borrow from you and pass off as my own), I've purchased a Samsung 850 Pro SSD (256 GB) and am going to install it for him.  We've already increased the memory.   I've also purchased the OWC data doubler and am planning to install the Samsung with the original Mac hard drive.
Having watched the install videos several times I feel fairly competent to do that, but my question is what to do then to access and make the most use of the SSD so everything (1) works and (2) runs as fast as possible?    For example, first, do I need to copy the OS to the SSD and delete from the Mac hard drive, and then somehow set up the SSD as the main drive?   And do I do this before I install the SSD or can I do it after?   Finally, what do I need to do to ensure that the computer uses the two drives optimally thereafter for maximum speed/performance.  You can see my level of expertise from my questions.
Other than the memory and the SSD install, we're not planning any other modifications, and his use of the mini is pretty vanilla (games, videos, etc.).    Any step-by-step help for a relative novice in this area (me) would be much appreciated.
    My Mac's specs:
    Mac mini (late 2012)
Processor:  2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 16 GB
    OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

    1. Partition and format the SSD.
    2. Install OS X on the SSD.
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu. You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed. When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • P700 with Samsung 840 EVO SSD

    Hello every one
I just bought a new Think Station P700. Before installing Windows 7 I changed the build in Hard disk to a new Samsung 840 EVO SSD. The diagnostic is able to find the SSD and all tests are passed.
Within the BIOS the SSD is not listed and when installing Windows 7 I’m not able to select the SSD.
I tested the SSD by attaching it to another System and it works fine.
How can I get this combination to work?
If more details are required please let me know.
Any helpful remarks or suggestions are welcome.
    Thank you in advance.
    Best Regards

Where is your SSD installed?  I need to know the specific port on the board.
When installing win7 to the sSATA controller (i.e. red ports SATA 1, 2, 3, or 4) you need to provide the Intel RSTe driver.  The controller is not native to win7.  If you happen to have your SSD installed to a black port, these are legacy AHCI and those ports should be native to win7.  Installing to the red sSATA ports is recommended.
With your win8.1 issue above, the only time I've seen messages like that (granted my German is a bit rusty) is when you have not deleted the existing partition on the drive.  You can try wiping out all the existing partitions on the drive and then installing the image.

I just repaired my drive in disk utility and it hasn't helped now it crashes more!

  • T520 dont boot from Samsung 850 EVO

hello,I encountered problem when cloning original HDD to SSD (samsung SSD 850 EVO) on my Lenovo thinkpad T520. First I installed Samsung cloning sw, attached SSD by USB2SATA conventor and then I ran cloning wizard. After cloning operation (with success result) I changed disks and my laptop was unable to boot from SSD drive. It looks exactly like if there is not any OS instaled on it. But if I connect this SSD disk to other computer, it works normally and I can see proper partition structure on it. I thought Samsung sw did incorrect work and I tried to use hardware disk cloning device to copy original disk to SSd once again in raw form. A little longer work, but worth doing in such case. Unfortunately, the result is the same. Laptop refuses to start OS from SSd and is trying to boot from NET instead. After then I tried to clone original disk to spare hybrid SSHD disk and both methods were successful - ie. laptop boots happily from SSHD but it keeps refusing to boot from Samsung SSD 850 EVO. any ideas what to do next? BIOS setting tweak perhaps?thanks in advance

    Hi
JirkaT, did you clone entire (!) drive, not partition-by-partition?
I performed the loning process multiple times w/o issues using free version of Acronis True Image Home application. I hope you'e using the same app from Samsung (it has another name I don't remember).
I installed the new target drive into the external USB-SATA box and used cloning application on the "old" source drive installed.

  • MacPro 4,1 won't boot from Samsung 840 EVO SSD

    Hello,
I've recently replaced the SSD in my MacPro4,1 system with a Samsung 840 EVO one. Before that I had an older OWC disk that worked fine.
Did a fresh install and everything was fine until the first reboot when the system doesn't start from the SSD anymore. It stays a bit displaying the access denied icon (cycles a couple of times through the mac icon, which dissapears immediately, and the access denied one) and then it boots into Windows or Recovery (both of these are on a separate partition).
Startup manager does not show the SSD in the list. Booting in Windows or Recovery however, the SSD appears in the list of devices that I can boot from. However it does not work.
I managed to start it up by booting into Recovery first, doing a Repair Disk which shows at the end "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required." and then rebooting. This only works once, if I want to reboot again I have to do the Repair Disk bit again.
    Thanks,
    Andu

  • Samsung 840 EVO SSD  slow in macbook Pro

    Hello Everybody.
Some months ago I got from amazon the a 250 Gb ssd, samsung 840 Evo.
Usign Black Magic I was impressed to see read/write speed about 450 MB/s.
Lately, running Black Magic Speed test, I noticed that the results drop down to 30 MB/s.
I just updated the ssd firmware and the result are almost the same (i think is going a lil better, but still dropping to 30-40 MB/s.
I know there are some threads about this, but didnt get to have clear  is this normal, a faulty piece or what?
    Some more info:
    Trim Enabler ON.
Free space from 50Gb-120 Gb (the results are almost the same)
    Macbook Pro 15" mid 2012, 2,3 GHz ,i7, 8GB ram.
    ssd firmware EXT0BB6Q (just updated)
    Even more info:
Right now I have just Chrome opened, and I'm running some tests.
The very first result go up to 480 Read and over 500 Write.
Restarting the test sometimes the first results in Write dont go higher than 260 MB/s.
Within 10-15 sec the write speed drops to 180 Write, then up again to 230-260 MB/s.
Waiting  1-2 min It drops down to 100, then 80 to reach 30 MB/s (all this is Write speed, Read is almost  constant at 480-500 MB/s)
    Stress 5GB.

    Grant,
I have been using the drive as a system drive for one year without enabling the TRIM, which I did yesterday. Are you suggesting that enabling TRIM does not remove the garbage filled blocks? Should I format the drive and proceed with a fresh install, or will the blocks clean with regular use?
Put simply, when something is deleted on a HD, the OS understands that the space is now free and can be written to. SSD's do not understand that so the pages from which the file was deleted are considered still full of good stuff. The link I provided goes into some detail about what's involved in erasing SSD blocks so deleted files get moved along with the current files in the SSD erasure dance.
TRIM is the way the OS informs the SSD that the space occupied by the deleted file really can be erased, and the SSD then acts on it. However, your SSD hasn't been directly notified about the year's worth of deleted data because TRIM wasn't activated to do it. The SSD's Garbage Collection process will get to that space eventually but it won't be as efficient as if TRIM was there to help.
But since all the SSD's blocks have a finite life span, the less they're exercised by erasing, formatting and reinstalling stuff, the longer the SSD should last.

  • MSI GX660R with intel motherboard and compatibility with Samsung 840 EVO SSD

    Hi
Im am new to this forum, so I apologize in advance if this post is in the wrong section.
I am considering to replace the hard drive in my MSI GX660R with a Samsung 840 EVO 250 gb ssd, since it has the best benchmark ratings and are very afordable. My laptop has an Intel motherboard with an i7 core processor.
My question in relation to the upgrade is, whether the laptop is compatible with that excact ssd. I plan to run it in AHCI mode, since I have bad expirience with loss of data under RAID. If i chose to run the extra HDD as a secondary drive, it will therefore still be under AHCI.
Can anyone refer me to some sort of compatibility list, or tell me if the above mentioned drive is compatible? I havent been able to find out myself, and MSI is farily difficult to get in contact with.
    Any help is appreciated.

Yes, your early 2013 Retina model uses 6.0 Gbps SATA but it's not a standard mSATA connection. You could upgrade using Transcend's JetFlash -> http://www.transcend-info.com/apple/jetdrive/ - to space up to 960GB, however.

The EVO has performed better in benchmark tests and is cheaper/GB, but there have been compatibility issues regarding performance in MBP's. See clintonfrombirmingham's response in this post >>>Can I upgrade my Hard Disk in MacBook Pro MD101 to Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB....Please advice

  • Samsung 840 evo ssd not recognized in macbook pro 2011

    Hello Apple Support Forum,
I am trying to upgrade the hdd in macbook pro for ssd. I've formated the SSD in Mac format in another macbook air via USB, and installed the SSD in the main bay. However, after I booted using OS X mavericks usb drive, the OS X installer does not regonize the SSD. Can any one offer some adivce or suggestions? I am pretty sure that the disk is physically installed corrected in the mai bay.
    Thanks!

    biglizheng,
have you checked to see if your SSD is recognized by your MacBook Pro externally, via USB? If it’s accessible externally, then you could run the Mavericks installer to do a clean install onto the external SSD. It will be slow, since it will be limited by your USB port’s transfer rate, but it should get the task done. Once the external installation process has completed, you can hold down an Option key while restarting your MacBook Pro, and it should list the SSD as one of the drives from which you can boot. If you can boot from it and run Mavericks from it, then the problem could be with your internal SATA cable rather than with the SSD. (HDDs can be more forgiving of faulty SATA cables than SSDs are, which could explain why it didn’t affect your HDD.)

  • [SOLVED] Samsung 840 Evo SSD poor performance

I'm posting this as [SOLVED] just in case anyone else comes across this issue. This isn't a linux problem but it may affect linux users and the cause isn't obvious. Mods feel free to delete this topic but it may be useful for people searching in the future.
Samsung have identified a problem with this model of SSD which causes data access to become slower over time. They have released a "Performance restoration tool" that upgrades the firmware and restores the performance of the drive (essentially by re-writing the data to it).
The tool is available here: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/ … tAodanEAIg
As of today (27/10/2014) the tool is only for Windows but a linux version is due "At the end of October"

I thought I'd already posted my experience, but I guess it's better late than never. I tried to update with the bootable cd.iso but the update failed with an error saying something like "I AM AN ERROR" which I found to be quite amusing. Luckily the error happened before starting the update process so nothing was broken. Next up was the FreeDos method mentioned by Slizzered and everything worked just fine. So just to play safe, go with the bootable usb stick method which has been confirmed to be working.

  • Is my "Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB" defective (or just incompatible with MacBookPro5,5 Yosemite 10.10.2 - 13 inch mid-2009)

Is the Samsung 850 EVO not compatible with this MacBook Pro? Has anyone installed it and found it to work fine for a few months?
Has anyone faced boot-partition corruptions, problems when installing Yosemite updates with this SSD - on reboot, SSD partition became unmountable for me after the installing Yosemite update 10.10.2 (14C1510).
I am trying to understand whether
mine happens to be a defective drive - in which case I have the option of getting a refund from seller and ordering a replacement (same make+model), OR
I should return this one and go for a Crucial/OWC/other SSD
    Details:
    MacBookPro5,5 Yosemite 10.10.2
    Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB
I purchased this drive and installed it in my MacBookPro about a week ago.
Since then I have repeatedly run system-reported data corruptions on the SSD.
One obvious sign of the corruption is that on powering-on the laptop, it will stall for a long time (5 to 30 minutes! - normally it would boot up in about 30 seconds) after the grey/black Apple-logo and status bar appear on the white-background boot-screen.
Another way I see this is by running Disk Utility's 'verify disk' operation.. Reports serious errors and asks me to reboot in recovery-mode with Cmd-R to repair the partition.
I have erased and re-installed the OS (Yosemite) several times on it already because sometimes the Recovery-Partition's Disk Utility cannot repair the errors - asks me to backup and erase+format. The repair operation does not always succeed *.
This is happening often and without any pattern **.
Several times on the latest install, I have booted up in single-user mode and run fsck -fy: till yesterday, this was still occasionally finding and successfully repairing issues (after which I run fsck a couple more times to confirm).
Seems to be running fine today.
    * I am re-installing off of a TimeMachine backup.
But I don't think that is causing the trouble: verify-disk on the original backup reports no errors, and even the computer itself passes "verify"/"fsck -fy" several times over before failing in the same way again after an hour or 2 of actual use.
** On one occasion, after an OS update (latest OS X security patches) succeeded and reboot completed, verify-disk again asked for the Cmd-R recovery-mode repair - which failed to repair the errors.
Also, if I as much as launch the Yosemite installer while booted up, then even after quitting (without proceeding beyond the initial screen), the SSD fails completely again requiring to be erased. Happened twice with installers involved, but corruptions even without installers did happen.

I loaded the Samsung 850 into my 2012 i5 Macbook Pro and it's been working well since I installed a few days ago.  The only concern I have is that on boot up I get a white screen for around 30 seconds before it begins the startup with the apple and progress bar.  That's odd, because when I installed an SSD on my older 2009 Macbook a few years ago that laptop booted up almost instantaneously when I pushed the power button.
I loaded the system on the SSD by cloning, rather than using Time Machine and it worked without a hitch.  Used Carbon Copy Cloner in trial mode after formatting the SSD with Disk Utilities.  Not sure if your problem may stem from using Time Machine.  The cloning apps will usually adjust the data on the new drive based on available space, so if your SSB is a different size than the original HDD, it would automatically correct.  Not sure about TIme Machine.
I'll keep researching about the startup lag when I turn on my Macbook Pro with the 850.  Seems it should boot up right away with the SSD, but maybe it's because the 850 uses the new vertical stacking configuration.  That's the only thing I can think of that's different from the last SSD I installed in my old Macbook.

  • SATA problems with 850 EVO

    Hello,
I recently upgraded my laptops slow HDD to a brand new SSD! (samsung 850 EVO 120gb) and my computer is misbehaving!
When I first turned on my laptop with the SSD and installed the Samsung magician software it said that my computer did NOT support SATA3 6GB/s! My computer suddently did some sort of update and the magician said "Your SSD is connected to SATA3 6GB/s!" And yes i did a benchmark and got over 500MB/s read and write compared to the SATA2 210MB/s i got on read and write. The next morning I went to check it out again and it said it was SATA2 again!??! wth is going on here?
    I have a hp pavilion 17-e177sb with windows 8.1
UPDATE: I should've called this thread: "SATA3 enabled after BIOS flash but gets disabled on next reboot"
    can anyone help me?
    thanks,
    nnvt

    HI @nnvt
I grasp that you installed a new SSD drive, the Samsung 850 EVO 120gb.
The magician software advised you that your system did not support SATA 3.  The computer did something and then you were connected at SATA 3.  This worked fine until you rebooted and it then reverted back to SATA2.
Here is a link to the HP Pavilion 17-e177sb Software and Drivers . Please check that you have the latest bios and UEFI ( under diagnostics) installed.

  • Samsung 840 Evo incredibly slow in MacBook Pro 2011

I just got a brand new 250GB Samsung 840 Evo SSD and put it in my MacBook Pro. The drive is incredibly slow. OS X install took hours, and it takes over a minute to boot up. Even small tasks like clicking a button take several seconds to process. I have enabled TRIM through terminal (which took about an hour) and still no better. Is this something that can be fix or should I get an RMA# from NewEgg?

    jeffturner24,
older firmware revisions of the 840 EVO are known to be problematic on Macs. You can download the latest firmware package for it (and an instructional PDF) from this Samsung page; with this package, you can burn a bootable DVD from which the latest firmware revision can be installed.
Another possibility is that you might have a faulty internal SATA cable. If you connect your SSD externally and boot from it then, and it runs at normal SSD speeds, but it remains incredibly slow when booting from it internally, that could point to a problem with your internal SATA cable. (Hard disks are more tolerant of a faulty internal SATA cable than SSDs are.)
If neither step above resolves the issue, then you should arrange an exchange with Newegg.
