Thread dump under linux

Hi John,
My computer(celeron 2.2ghz ,1 GBRAM) is far too slow than turtle if creator is opened. I have changed memory setting but dint help. I am very frustrated, I takes ages to navigate or do anything.
Could you please outline the steps to generate the thread dump under LINUX, I know u have posted them before but they are for windows.
Any help will be greratly appreciated.

  • Oc4j thread count under linux

    hi all !
    i have a memory problem on my as903 on linux and now i'm confused about why there are 18 oc4j threads started for my 5 deployed applications (not to mention the others for administration!??).
    right now i wonder if there is a way to configure this thread count ?
    anyone of you solved this problem ?
    alois

    OC4J 903 releases and later have a configurable thread-pool, where you can set the upper and lower bounds for the number of threads to use.
    I don't know that this will be the cause of the memory problem you mention, but if you want to tune it, then see: http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/ias/doc_library/903doc_otn/generic.903/a97677/advanced.htm#1011968

  • WebLogic 8.1 SP4 on Linux - thread dump does not work

    I have setup WebLogic 8.1 SP4 on RedHat Linux AS 3.3 with Sun JVM (142_05). When I try to perform a thread dump using weblogic.Admin, I receive the following error in the stderr file. I have also tried the kill -3 but still no thread dump. Is there some trick to this ?
    cannot load libary 'stackdump': java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no stackdump in java.library.path

    I am getting the same error as well
    cannot load libary 'stackdump': java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no stackdump in java.library.path
    I am creating a simple domain using the domain config wizard and I hope all the PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH are set by the default scripts. But I am still getting this error.
    But Kill -3 <PID> works though!
    Is is a know problem OR am I missing something?!

    but nid for all threads in the thead dump is the PID of my main process, 3936 (0xf60). is there a way to correlate the PIDs produced by "ps -efm" to the threads in the thread dump?
    thanks!

    i upgraded to 1.5 version of java, and could see distinct "nids" in the thread dump after that..

  • Reduce number of running thread under Linux

    Hello,
    How can reduce the number of running thread for coldfusion MX
    7.0.2 server under Linux (they are almost 30; )

    If you create a pool of any sort you will need a point where all requests for a resource from the pool must go via, and that piece of code could potentially become a bottle neck. But if you develop it well there will be a very small piece of code that is sychrnonized that will either put a request in a queue as there are no resources available, or it will provide the requested resource. As far as i am aware there is no safe way around this as you will have multiple threads requesting the resource.

  • Too many resources used under Linux

    I have tested sun jvm under linux red-dat 6.2
    and 7.1 (listed by Sun as official platform supported)
    The JVM I test was from 1.3.0 to the 1.4.1
    I have written a simple application server that
    runs java application starting a new JVM.
    When the java application runs (with the -server or
    -hotspot option) I see that 10 java process are
    istantiated. (10 JVM)
    This is a real problem because for 4 users that runs 4
    applications there are 40 JVM running
    (each one allocates about 20 Mb of memory)
    and the system became very slow.
    With the -classic option the situation is better: only 1 JVM
    for application is started, (the application is the same, I
    have change only the -server option with -classic)
    but JVM seems to be less stable: I have a lot of segmentation
    fault errors. (with core dump)
    With the new distribution of Sun JVM (1.4.1) the -classic option
    is no longer supported.
    Does anyone knows if is there a way to have only one JVM
    for application? (-classic does not works well)
    Is there others JVM for linux more stable instead of the Sun one?
    PS: I have tested the same code under win/2000 using JVM 1.3.1_03
    and the -classic option. All goes well (the same application):
    I haver only 1 thread for application without jvm runtime error.
    Now my doubt is: does Sun belive in the Linux Word?
    JVM for Windows is much more stable!!!
    Thank you in advanced and best regards.

    I am assuming that you believe that there are 10 processes because that is what ps shows. However on Linux, each thread in a java program shows up in ps as a separate process. The memory for each "ps process" corresponding to a java thread is shared among all the threads of the JVM. Therefore if you see 10 processes with 20MB each you are not using 200MB, just 20.
    If you are running 4 JVMs then you would be using 40MB not 800 as shown in ps.
    I think Sun's JVM for linux is quite good (as I use it every day). If you need to run so many JVMs you should invest in more memory.
    BTW, How much memory is installed in your system?

  • Failed to install enterprise manager under linux

    When I installed Oracle 10g(10.2.0.1) under linux, I got an error when running
    /ora01/db/oracle/product/10.2.0.1/bin/emca within oracle universal installer.
    The emConfig.log file shows such error:
    oracle.sysman.emcp.exception.EMConfigException: Invalid value null for parameter PORT
    at oracle.sysman.emcp.ParamsManager.checkParam(ParamsManager.java:2630)

    at oracle.sysman.assistants.util.em.EMConfiguration.run(EMConfiguration.java:426)
    at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:534)
    So I have to run emca after the oracle installation. I am new to this tool. I modified both tnsnames.ora and listener.ora file to set port to 1521. And then I run emca -config all db,
    but now I cannot pass "entering the password for SYS user" (I already set SYS user's password to oracle, and it works when using sqlplus.) .
    I am totally confused. What should I run emca to set up the enterprise manager's website? Now I can use localhost:5560/isqlplus and localhost:5560/isqlplus/dba.
    Many thanks!!

    I just run emca as oracle instead of root, then the password got passed, but I got new errors:
    Aug 30, 2007 5:59:59 PM oracle.sysman.emcp.EMConfig perform
    SEVERE: Failed to allocate port(s) in the specified range(s) for the following process(es): JMS [5540-5559],RMI [5520-5539],Database Control [5500-5519],EM Agent [3938] | [1830-1849]
    What should I do? Is running emca -config all db necessary to get enterprise manager installed?

  • How to find out the number of threads created under java vm at runtime

    our application seems to have hit the max number of threads that can be created under vm and the vm will just hang after that. that behavior seems to be consistent from an article that I read earlier.
    I wonder any way that java app can find out the number of threads currently created under vm?
    thanks in advance!

    If you are not starting an extra thread group you can use the Thread.activeCount method. But this willnot return all the threads, as there are some jvm threads, i.e. garbage collector. Also if you are running on a Unix type operating system then you can send a signal to the jvm to give you a thread dump, i think the signal is sighup.
    If the application is hanging i would of thought that you have a deadlock situation rather then the JVM not being able to create new threads, roughly how many threads should be running ??

  • Thread Dump issue with LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1

    Hi ,
    When I take Thread Dump using 'jstack <PID>' in JDK 1.5 it givss me "sun.jvm.hotspot.debugger.DebuggerException" in the dump nothing more
    I set LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 in my server to avaoid some other issue ( JVM crash some times)
    Surprisingly, I can not stop my server ( my java process ) after that using our Shutdow scripts , Ctrl C or even "kill -9 <PID>",
    I have to restart the machine or manually release uncleaned resources that my server occupied and restart the server
    This happens Redhar 9 as well as in Linux ES.
    Anybody faced similar problem?
    Any help or information regarding this is highly apprecialted

    @brain0
    I've downloaded the glic-2.3.6 sources from gnu, so I could build it from those. I'm however reluctant to do this because I really don't want to break my install.
    I do agree with you on the NPTL statement, but pvs relies on allegro, which relies on LinuxThreads. Allegro is not being ported to new versions of glibc, so that approach is unfortunately not viable.
    @iphitus
    I wasn't very specific - it's allegro as in a lisp environment.
    I think I'll try and install an old version of arch on wmware instead. Is there anywhere you can check out glibc version numbering on old arch install isos (ie. do I need arch-0.[1-9].iso)? And anywhere you can download the old isos (tried filewatcher, but a lot of the older sites seem broken)?
    Thanks for the replies,
    Mads
    PS. I noticed that you recommended slackware for old kernels in another thread. I'm however in a bit different situation as I need old versions of glibc. Furthermore I would prefer sticking to arch, but was wondering whether there were any specific reasons for not doing that.

    Thanks alot for your reply. It is a web application
    using java and tomcat server. And the problem is that
    sometime when I click on a button or a link than the
    CPU goes to 100% and it hangs but normally it works
    smoothly without any problem.This often indicates a busy retry loop somewhere. You need to acquire the thread dump when the problem occurs, but be warned that depending on the problem it may not be possible to obtain a Java-level thread dump. In that case you need to try and take an OS level thread dump - eg using pstack on solaris/linux (and there's some win32 tool as well if I recall correctly).

  • SIGQUIT ignored / no thread dump in 1.5/5.0 ?

    Trying out 1.5 on a dual-xeon, Linux 2.4.27 machine. - 'java -version' returns:
    java version "1.5.0"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0-b64)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0-b64, mixed mode, sharing)
    Java process seems to ignore 'kill -SIGQUIT' -- nothing to stderr/stdout, nothing to working directory. A thread dump would be really handy. No special options were used to launch JVM.
    Any ideas?

    I'm having a problem with the same symptom: SIGQUIT is ignored. So I ran jstack and got this:
    Error occurred during stack walking:

  • Exception in html parser under Linux

    Hi all,
    Following code is copied from Tech Tip 23Sep1999. I have compiled it and run it under Win98. It works fine for any uri. However, when I try to run it under Linux, it throws exceptions. I noticed that some web site can be parsered with the program in Linux but some can't. I wonder the different between those platforms. Anyone can tell me how to make the program works under Linux.

  • Crash (SIGSEGV, SIGILL) of 32bit Hotspot under Linux x86_64 in VMware

    Hello!
    A reproducible crash of these 1.6 32 bit Java VMs is hinderung my application from starting when I want to start it under a x86_64 Linux kernel in VMware (Workstation and ESX):
    - java version "1.6.0_06"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode, sharing)
    - java version "1.6.0_06"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode)
    - java version "1.6.0_10-beta"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-beta-b23)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b11, mixed mode, sharing)
    Tested using there kernels:
    - Linux debian 2.6.18-6-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Feb 10 17:50:19 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    - Linux openSUSE 2.6.22.5-31-default #1 SMP 2007/09/21 22:29:00 UTC x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    - Linux sles10-sp1-sdm 2.6.16.46-0.12-default #1 Thu May 17 14:00:09 UTC 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    Sproradic but reproducible JVM (Hotspot) crashes while running a simple garbage collector stress application several times in parallel. hs_err files are generated each time. However, the "Problematic frame" address and library changes every time!
    Examples:
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (10.0-b22 mixed mode, sharing linux-x86)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C [libc.so.6+0xe4c9d] xdr_u_long+0xd
    VM state:not at safepoint (normal execution)
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (10.0-b22 mixed mode linux-x86)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C 0xf7f56acb
    VM state:at safepoint (normal execution)
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (10.0-b22 mixed mode linux-x86)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C [libnss_compat.so.2+0x2e16] nsscompat_getpwnam_r+0x46
    VM state:synchronizing (normal execution)
    The problem only appears using JDK or JRE 1.6 32 bit edition on a Linux 2.6 x86_64 kernel in VMware. Tests using real hardware, using a i686 kernel and using JDK / JRE 1.6 64 bit edition or JDK / JRE 1.5 (32 bit and 64 bit) could not reproduce the crashes.
    Questions:
    - Is there a general stability problem when starting the 32 bit Java VM under Linux 64?
    - Does anybody have similar problems with
    - Java VM 32bit under Linux 64?
    - Java VM in VMware (both ESX and Workstation)?
    Simple stress test application:
    public class GCStress {
    private static Thread[] threads;
    private static java.util.Random random = new java.util.Random();
    private static int maxBytes;
    private static int numThreads;
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    numThreads = Integer.parseInt(args[0]);
    maxBytes = Integer.parseInt(args[1]);
    threads = new Thread[numThreads];
    for (int x = 0; x < numThreads; x++) {
    threads[x] = new Thread(new Allocator(), "Thread_" + x);
    threads[x].start();
    while (true) {
    for (int x = 0; x < numThreads; x++) {
    if (!threads[x].isAlive()) {
    threads[x] = new Thread(new Allocator(), "Thread_r" + x);
    threads[x].start();
    try {
    Thread.sleep(500);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    // ignore
    private static class Allocator implements Runnable {
    public void run() {
    while (true) {
    int tSize = random.nextInt(maxBytes);
    // System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getName()
    // + " allocating " + tSize / 1024 + "kb");
    byte[] tMemFiller = new byte[tSize];
    try {
    Thread.sleep(random.nextInt(200));
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    ; // ignore
    }

    The program is started like this:
    ./jdk1.6.0_06/bin/java -server -Xms32m -Xmx256m GCStress 500 10485760
    And I run it usually 5 times in parallel. 1 time seems not to be enough (I should test that tonight).
    However, I've tested using several -XX: flags, but nothing really helped! (-XX:+UseParallelGC, -XX:-UseTLAB, -XX:+UseSpinning -XX-UseThreadPriorities, -XX:-UseBiasedLocking, -XX:-UseLargePages)
    About the lib: Every time, the content of hs_err is very different. I've also got

  • Collect Thread Dump using Script and direct to separate log file

    Dear Legends,
    I request you to provide me some useful guide lines to collect Thread Dump using script in linux and redirect the output to a separate log file, not the STDOUT file. If it is redirecting to STDOUT then how to extract only the thread stack to a separate log file.
    i used
    ps -ef | grep java
    kill -3 <pid> >> ss1_td.log
    but it is not providing the thread stack to the log file.
    Anykind of help would be appreciated much.
    Regards,
    Karthik

    Hi Ram,
    Really a great and useful script for me at the right time. It solved my requirement and i made some changes to my requirement and the script it working fine to collect the thread dump and even i have checked the thread dump with SAMURAI works fine.
    Helpful site also refer sites like these which contains more valuable things for weblogic. We will meet in the forums again.
    Note: also please update several links available in the site like UNIX scripts, WLST, Python etc.

    Karthik
