Thread problem depending on the OS

I'm developing a Java CORBA server application with JDK1.2.2.007, it contains a lot of threads and synchronized blocks - multithreading use. I have the following weird behavior depending on the OS:
The startup of my server is for instance the ORB mainloop (let's say like a graphical event loop).
- on WIN32 the CPU gets stuck to 100% after startup (without any activity)
- on Solaris it is not reproducible
- on HP neither
After performing a client request on my NE:
- on WIN32 (2K) the CPU keep stuck to 100% (I'm not astonished anyway)
- in Solaris (spark) the CPU gets stuck to 100% after this first client request (but no activity after the request is completed)
- on HP the problem is unreproducible (at any time).
We're developing on SUN and we've came to the point that we have to use 2 workstations: one to run the server and one to run the client coz the CPU problem. By chance my target is on HP ;-)
At one given time, a lot of threads do exist (for instance the Orbacus threadpool). I've tried to analyze with JVM options -Xrunhprof:heap=sites,cpu=samples,depth=10,monitor=y,thread=y,doe=y with not real success.
I've heard about Amdahl's law but I'd like to know how I can analyze that the problem comes from the object creation, garbage collection, and/or synchronied methods/blocks. Does anybody know much about how to track this law in real code ?
-> if so, how to detect these blocks ?
-> if so, can I instrument the JVM to solve the problem ?

There certainly isn't any evidence that threads on Sun or Windows normally pegs the cpu. At least not without activity.
So that certainly suggests that your code does impact it in some way.
I am guessing that you are also not using the same vendor for the JVM on all boxes? Sun doesn't make one for HP.
How many threads are you creating?
Threads wait on objects. Presumably when you start it up you are waiting for some signal to start processing? And the only way to block would be to wait on a system resource like a socket. So what type of resource are you blocking on at start up?

When I'm trying to connect to the net by using my application, I get two errors: "TCP open" and "interruptedIOException", and so I suspect that's some kind of thread problems.
On the other phones (Nokia, Sony Ericsson) this application works with no problems...

Java threading problem... threads only work on 1 processor

I've got a iterative deepening problem that i have to parallelize. As far as i know i did everything correctly however everything seems to be running on 1 processor instead of 2 processors. As far as i know i am using threads (-Xprof either defines them as thread-1 thread-2 or pool1-thread1,depending on the method used for issueing)

it get's it's input from a bag that is filled before the iteration begins. (once the bag is filled it trips a barrier) this worker thread is a implementation of Runnable

    }since this method is synchronized and it always returns something (either null or a board) and the worker tests for this. there is no race condition here.
furter more. the main thread is a loop. It fills te bags with an intial state. then it trips the barrier and waits for the workers to do the work. the workers then process the bag until it hits zero and then trip the barrier so that the main thread can do the next iteration (and fill the bag)
p.s. i know the code is a bit messy, but i want to get the threading to work. As of now i relaly don't understand why the threads are just running on 1 processor instead of 2 processors. not only that. the excecution time is nearly the same as that of a sequential equivalent.
p.s.2 the code is parallisable. and it is run on a smp system.

i'm very sure that the jvm and os support smp. the
problem really should be in the code.I don't see how this can be the case. There's nothing in the Java language that deals with how threads are assigned to processors (at least not as far as I know) so there isn't anything you can do in your code to affect that.
Or did you meant that i have to tell the jvm in the class that
there is support for multiple processorsThat would be the only possibility. I have no idea whether it can be done or not, though.

Cant syncronize! Threads problem

that i imagine is in the event dispatch thread.
This method calls as u see, two other methods of a class named CPU(.
Note that fetch and execute are observed classes and my applet class

The problem is that during the execution of fetch() and execute(),
inside these methods change some things and so they call notifyObservers(Object arg)
passing to the applet the argument and so the applet updates some text components.
But as you can immagine there is no time for the gui to update himself so i see nothing.
So, my question is which of the methods need to be in a separate thread so to ensure
visible results(component updating)?
Perhaps,the update method needs to be invokedLater with SwingUtilities?
Please give me an example code if possible.

One way could be to put the content of the action performed method into a new thread, then use invokeLater in your Observers that cause GUI updates:

Well,let me describe the new problem.
Here you cant see the method execute().
The problem is a synchronization problem.
Actually,what the two methods do is:fetch() updates the value of a long called instruction and execute() takes this value and do some things.Note also that the time the execute method needs to finish is not
always the same.By that, i mean that it depends on the value of the instruction updated by fetch().
By putting some System.outs before and after updating i realized that there are delays or sometimes
i noticed that fetch() executes 2 times before execute() takes control.
So,i created some synchronized private methods set and get to control access to these resources.
Better but still not correct...
What should i look?Where stays the answer?
How to synchronize these two methods on these resources?

I think that your fetch and execute has a "Producer-Consumer Relationship"
in such cases you can make the producer place the produced value in to a queue and consumer take the vlues from the queue
In the producer thread it sleeps for a while and try again if the Queue is full
In the Consumer thread it sleeps for a while if the Queue is empty and then try again
Or you can do as follows
In the Producer thread it waite() if the Queue is full
In the Consumer thread it waite() if the queue is empty
When ever Producer put a value in to the Queue it calls the notify on Consumer and when ever Consumer takes a value from Queue it calls the notify() on Producer
you can even use notify all
I think thiere is no built in Queue class in java so you will have to write one here is a example

In the above report first column and the last columns are fixed and the other columns are dynamic depending upon the input selection:
if input selection is Normal and RDO then only 2 columns w'd be created and the other 2 fixed columns.
Can anybody help me how do I design such report....

According to your description that you want to dynamically increase and decrease the numbers of the columns in the table, right?
As Jason A Long mentioned that we can use the matrix to do this and put the year field in the column group, amount fields(Numric values) in the details, add an filter to filter the data base on this column group, but if
the data in the DB not suitable to add to the matrix directly, you can use the unpivot function to turn the column name of year to a single row and then you can add it in the column group.
If there are too many columns in the column group, it will fit the page size automatically and display the extra columns in the next page.

There was a problem connecting to the server (again)

Dear All
There have been many posts with "problem connecting to the server" errors, but they all one way or another get corrupted with Time Machine responses. I have seen threads with a similar problem to mine, but there is no clear answer. So, for this thread please do not make reference to Time Machine. I have never used it.
I get an error "There was a problem connecting to the server "NAME""
The server may not exiost or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
The server is my old laptop running Snow Leopard. I don't use this computer anymore because I have bought a MacBook Pro riunning LIon.
The error is on my iMac, which I have recently upgraded to Lion. Now that I am not using my Snow Leopard laptop this error is impossible; my iMac is becoming unusable because I cannot type more than 10 words without this error warning.
As I said, I do not use Time Machine, so that cannot be the problem. It is off. I simply need my iMac to completely forget about my old laptop.
Any help appreciated.

How to display different Splash Screen depending on the Locale?

Hi,
I have a splash screen which is working fine.
I want to display different spalsh screen depending on the locale the user has.
Is this possible.
I can display different Title,Description and the text of the short-cut icon on desktop and startup Menu based on the locale by mentioning it in the JNLP and altering my browser settings. I am not able to use the icon and splash screen corresponding to the specified locale. How to do this?

SQL query / thread problem!

I have the following code. when the execute mkethod is called, an instance of TransactionRunner is created. within the run method of TransactionRunner an SQLQuery is executed. I want to return the result set when the query has been executed, how can I do this, at the moment it tries to return the resultSet before the thread has finished. any ideas? I hav tried using a boolean as a flag but it doesn't appear to work.

I am up against the same problem, but I believe that
you could fire off a progress monitor during the
thread task and have the thread return the ResultSet.If you're planning to use Swing, then yes, you do need to execute the command in a spawned thread, otherwise your event thread will hang. BUT, spawning a sub-thread from a Swing app is not equivalent to spawning one from a simple console app, because the Swing event thread will keep your process alive. Instead, I would suggest doing something like the following:
1) In the ActionListener that invokes the query (may be hung off a menu item, or a button, depending on your app):
        public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent actionEvent)
            (new Thread(new MyQuery())).start();
            displayWaitIndication();
        }This method runs in the event thread, and spawns a sub-thread to run the query. It also displays some sort of wait indication, maybe a progress box or a WAIT_CURSOR (I prefer the wait cursor, as you can't accurately display the progress of a server-side operation).
2) MyQuery implements Runnable:
        public void run()
            List data = // call something to perform DB op here
            SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable()
                public void run()
                    mainWindow.refresh(data);
        }This may be a bit confusing, as it leaves a lot of stuff out. I've used "List" as the return from the database function; chances are that you'll actually implement something like MyResultSet. You don't want to use an actual java.sql.ResultSet, because it (may) perform(s) a client-server call to retrieve each row. So, you process the real result-set into a container object (List or whatever) in the sub-thread.
Then, you pass that container object back to the display window, on the event thread. I've used a variable to access the display window; you may do things differently. The key thing is the use of SwingUtilities.invokeLater(), to perform the actual update on the event thread.
To summarize:
1) You initiate the action on the event-thread.
2) You perform the action in a sub-thread, put the resuls into a container.
3) You update your display on the event-thread, using SwingUtilities.invokeLater().

Thread caching generally and the print API specifically

hi - new slant on the old "printing" chestnut
code goes something like this.

if i run the same piece of code twice over, deleting a printer after the first time thru, i get the right answer on the second run.
example b)
if i stop the code at the break point, and then delete a printer; i get the same answer for z as for y. Still using the same JVM and thread, remember.
i think the JVM or thread is caching the answers to this static call "lookupPrintServices". so i get the same answer until the code ends and the JVM exits.
since this is going to run in an EJ bean, a workaround might be creating a child thread, doing the printer discovery in it, then returning the answer somehow to the waiting main program. This is nasty - does anyone have an other ideas ?

In fact, these server process have multiple devices attached because there are different hardware requirements depending on metadata recorded in the XML file (paper size/type, duplex printing). When a new hardware requirement arises, we may need to install a different device. It may also be the case that an XML contains a new printer name but that an existing device matches the requirements. We then install a new (logical) printer and map it to the port of the existing matching device.
Any way, the device selection is data-driven and is somewhat dynamic (we will not add printer every day/hour but it will happen and the service should preferably not be interrupted)
The problem of a new report type with hardware requirements already supported by existing devices could be solved by a override method but the problem of new hardware specifications, requiring the installation of a new printer can currently be solved only by bouncing the VM, which must be done carefully (being sure that a report has been processed completely and that the next one has not yet been started).

Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 SP3 service-j2ee threads problem

I'm an intermediate Java programmer and a newbie in
the Sun's web servers world.
I'm doing an evaluation of an web applicaction
written in Java Servlets that is
supposed to have a leaking threads problem. We use
SunOS 5.9 (... sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-i2) and
JVM 1.5 Update 4 (the problem is presented too
in SunOS 5.8 and JVM 1.4.2_04).
We have seen, thanks to 'prstat' (PROCESS/NLWP) a
increasing thread's growing in one of the process
that correspond to our web server instance (I'm sure I'm
looking the right process). I have checkout the source
code and it seems like the app doesn't have threads
problems. I have used the Netbeans Profiler and I see a
high number of threads called service-j2ee-x that grows
in congestion moments and never disappear.
Anybody could help me with suggestions?

Thankyou, yes I am unfamiliar with debugging Java apps. I got the web server Java stack trace and I have passed this on to the developer.
The web server finally closes the socket connection after the total connections queued exceeds 4096.
There are several hundred entries like this... waiting for monitor entry.. could be a deadlock somewhere?

Problem in fetching the code for the line item

Hi,
I am working on a report in which to display the values corresponding to the line item of a PO.
For, ex, if there are 3 line items 10,140,150 and their condition values such zing,zgrd,zbrd are the condition types consist of different values depending on the line item i.e. 10,140,150.
My problem is when i execute the code the data of 1st line item is correctly fetched but the rest 2 line item data is pasted as it is. only the main pricre changes and the code for zing,zbrd,zgrd remains same as it is in the first line item 10.
plzz proivde me guide lines how to solve this problem.

How can we model different receipt days in a location depending on the start-destination relationship in an optimizer run in SNP?

We have a business scenario where the receipt days for a location depends on the relationship between the Start-Destination Location. We need to include this constraint in an optimizer run with daily buckets.
Example:
Factory A (Start Location) ships to DC X (destination location) only on Mondays, with a lead time of 2 days. DC X should receive the stock from Factory A on Wednesday
Factory B (Start Location) ships to DC X (destination location) only on Thursdays, with a lead time of 1 day. DC X should receive the stock from Factory B on Saturday
Does anyone has been able to model this scenario?
I tried using transportation calendars(time stream) in the means of transport, having undesired results:
a) Transportation Lane A-X. Calendar 1A, only Monday is available
The system creates stock transfers on Monday on Week 1 and ends on Monday of Week 3.
b) Transportation Lane A-X. Calendar 2A, Monday and Wednesday are available
The system creates stock transfers on Monday and Wednesday on Week 1:
      The stock transfer that starts on Monday-Week 1 ends on Monday-Week 2.
      The stock transfer that starts on Wednesday-Week 1 ends on Wednesday-Week 2.
c) Transportation Lane A-X. Calendar 3A, Monday Tuesday and Wednesday are available
The system creates stock transfers on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday on Week 1.
     The stock transfer that starts on Monday-Week 1 ends on Wednesday-Week 1. (this is actually what I need)
     The stock transfer that starts on Tuesday-Week 1 ends on Monday-Week 2.

you really don't need to post all that code, few people will read it, or try to compile/run it.
just a tree in a scrollpane in a frame is all you need, then add the method/problem to the basic,
and post that so its only 20 to 30 lines long.

I have installed Safari update - 5.0.6 and the browser stopped working. At openingit shows the following icon:
"Safari has suddenly finished working. Possible problem is in the action of the plugin "TastyAppsAVPlugin".
After deleting all plugins from the folder "Internet Plugin", Safari worked again no problem, BUT all sites with flash content (e.g.YouTube) did not work.
I then tried the following experimental steps:
a) Moved all plugins from the folder "Internet Plugin" into a temporary folder.
b) Downloaded and istalled Adobe Flash Player version 10.3.181.34
c) Started Safari and it did not work ( same message"TastyAppsAVPlugin")
d) Deleted Adobe Flash Player from the folder "Internet Plugin". Safari worked.
e) Moved back all plugins, except Adobe Flash Player, from the temporary folder to "Internet Plugin" folder. Safari works... But Flash won't work!!! Before update to Safari 5.0.6 , ev erything worked perfectly well.
Guys, please solve the problem

How to generate a pwm whose duty cycle has to be varied depending on the frequency of the input trigger??

I am quite new to the Labview FPGA module.
I am currently working on an application where i have to generate a pwm to control the ON time duration . The pwm ON time depends on the frequency of an input signal.I want to retrieve the ON time value from a lookup table which contain the duty cycle values for the pwm at different frequencies of the input.This input also has to work as a trigger. The input is pulsed and the trigger has to generate the pwm at every rising edge. I am using a PCI 7831R- RIO series. I am urgently in need of some help and i have hardly a couple of weeks before i meet the deadline.
I am trying hard to learn the basics from the shipping examples but not able to quite make my vi work.
Kindly lend a helping hand and i would be very grateful to anybody who can help. Thanks a lot in advance.

iOS 7 devices need iTunes 11.1 or newer to sync. Depending upon your computer and the OS it is running, you may not be able to upgrade to iTunes 11.1 based on the requirements for iTunes 11.1.
