Tiger 10.4.11- Security Update- Internet Problems

I have big problems with Internet (very slow) since I installed the latest Security Updates ! Who can help? (if possible in german...) Thanks (e041172 at yahoo.de)

Schade. Mein Deutsche is nicht sehr gut.
I am not an expert here, but a number people have had similar problems. The issue seems to have started in July.
Various solutions have been posted, but the two that worked for us are as follows (using 10.4.11). Both are setting in System Preferences > Network > Built In Ethernet TCP/IP (we're hardwired to the internet at the moment).
One solution was to enter DNS setting as 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
The other solution was to enter the DNS setting as 4.2.2.5
After entering, hit Apply Now, then restart the computer. Both worked, but the second actually seemed to be a little faster.
We have not tried this with the Network > Airport yet, but one post suggested using the longer DNS settings for it and the shorter setting for Ethernet.
Good luck!

  • Has the lastest security update caused problems for anyone else?

Since the latest security update things have been a little weird with my MBP. Within 5 hours of udating the computer there were two kernal panics. At least I think the second one was a kernal panic. I had closed the lid and it wouldnt sleep or turn back on and it had no response to the power button or any keys so I eventually pulled the battery. Then on restart it acted as if recovering from a panic.
Since then I have had other problems such as long waking time from sleep, dim screen after restarts, and itunes opening for no reason at all. After the latest restart things seem more 'normal.'
Has anyone else had this problem? If it continues, what should I do?

And here was I thinking it was my own imagination! After installing that annoying update, my MBP has not been the same.
I also had two kernal panics exactly as you have described.
My MBP seems to me to be extremely sluggish compared to what it was, and I am seriously condsidering reinstalling OS x and not installing that update.
At one point I decided to run disk check and it said I needed to repair my hard drive, something about the actual size and recorded size being different, so I repaired that last night so I will have to see how that goes.
I am very careful with my comp so i know that it is nothing I did that could cause thes problems.
And of course to add another problem to the list, My battery life is nothing like it used to be. I am a college student and up until i installed that update i could easily go 4 hours in lecs using the laptop to take notes, but now after about half an hour the battery indicator says i have an hour left. It is very annoying!

I don't have this problem but as I can see some people wrote about disabling security boot before this update must be installed. Can you please test it and send some feedback.

  • BW G3 Down after Security Updates

I have an older BW G3 that's running some version of 10.1 or something close to that. We just use it to run a scanner. After running a few minor OS updates that included a security update and something else, I have a system that boots up, but doesn't activate the monitor.
I can tell it's running because I get audio feedback on sound volume changes. During startup, the amber light on the monitor turns green for about 3 seconds as though it's trying to activate it. The same boot up symptoms happen when I try to boot from a CD, too. I've zapped the PRAM and removed a lot of the extra RAM.
Any ideas? I don't do big OS updates anymore because I know I'm "pushing it" with this system anyway. Hope someone can help. I don't know how else to proceed.

    Paul:
That's great! There have been some reports on one of the Security Updates causing problems, but not of the sort you are experiencing. It is very difficult to pinpoint these things. In any case you are back in business. Good for you.
    Good luck.

  • Leapard/Tiger & Security Updates on dialup

Did not see a General forum for this. If there is one, please point out its location?
I have had a MacMini PPC with Panther for just over three years now. Recently, the Audio input became "not supported" (no audio save 'out' via audio jack). Since the computer is getting old, I was thinking a new MacMini since I love it so much.
Problem: I can not afford anything but dial up and I see that the updates for Tiger and Leapard are MB huge. I had trouble getting the old Panther updates at 30-40MB. A 80-110MB update would take me all day IF it didn't get corrupted.
Is there any way around this problem? (No friends or family with hi-speed connections.)

    UPDATE:
Spent another 3 hours downloading 18.7 update for Quicktime7.2 that gives better tie in with iLife software since the first download attempt ended in 'can't write to Library' problems. Second attempt successful. Auto restart of computer. Repaired permissions. Went online. Whoops..can't. ISP Connect Authentication failure. Try again. Turn off computer. Restart. Try again. Can't connect to internet.
Found old backup of QuickTime 7.2 dmg file and re-install over current copy. Repair permissions again. Connect go online. Success. Bring up Software Update. Surprise--despite redoing Quicktime 7.2, the update that crashed my connectivity is no longer listed on the available update list. How can that be if I installed over my original copy of Quicktime that wanted that iLife compatibility update in the first place? Mystery. Update does not show on 'installed' list, but also isn't asking to be installed?
Remembers back when first got Mac that was told Software Update was an iffy proposition. It was better to go directly to the Apple Downloads page and get updates from there.
    Q. Has there been many complaints about Software Update and Security updates? I figure that I will need to spend something like 1/4 of my internet time with system tied up just doing various update downloads for software with Leopard. Having the SU cause problems a good percentage of the time would not be workable.
Note: Before someone asks, I don't have newest Quicktime 7.4.5 installed because did not trust Software Update before and the link from Apple Downloads always dumped me on a Quicktime site page where I can't seem to get their free download link to stop sending me in circles. Obviously, 7.2 version is the last time I was able to get their site to work for me. Same with iTunes. Besides, both are now so huge that I only bother Panther security updates and those seemed to stop with the New year.
    Q. Does anyone here have Leopard and a dial up connection? Is it working for you or have the newest Apple OS outgrown dial up so much that it would be pointless to invest in one for online work?
Will be computerless for rest of the week, but hope to find advice when I get back.

  • Dock won't hide/show after Tiger security update

I installed the Dec 27 Tiger security update last night (via SW update) and now the dock is behaving badly. I had it set to automatically show/hide, but it would not show anymore after the update. I always install sec updates, so I did also do the previous one without any problems.
So far I've done this to try to solve the problem:
    - I changed the settings to turn hiding off and the doc appears and works correctly in that mode. The only problem with it seems to be that it won't show after it hides with hiding turned on.
    - I repaired permissions
    - I shut down and restarted
    - I did a safe-mode restart and a regular restart
    - I trashed my doc preferences, restarted, and recreated the configuration of items I like.
    - I tried removing the preference called /Library/Preferences/com.apple.dockfixup.plist which had no effect, so I put it back. (It's dated 2006 but I have no further info about it.)
Also, oddly, it seems that my system menus are strictly pull-down now. I am almost sure they had some drop-down behavior before, because I keep clicking on main menu items expecting the submenu to persist, and it doesn't. If I'm not imagining this, perhaps the two issues are related?
I don't have any system mods or Finder replacement apps.
Are there any other dock-related files that I could replace from my backup to try to fix this issue?
Did the update do something specifically to change the dock?
I really hate to reinstall and reupdate from scratch to fix such a minor problem, but it is 100% annoying. Ideas and commiseration welcome.

Thank you. I didn't know you could remove the whole folder without wreaking havoc. I will try another user account for thoroughness.
    New info:
I discovered this morning that both of these problems do not occur with my Contour mouse, only with the Logitech trackball. The trackball has a brand new problem at startup today, which is that it acts like it's constantly right-button-down. It selects only.
So perhaps its a driver or mouse hardware issue. I think it's suspicious that it started immediately after the update, but since the trackball did not come with a driver, I am not sure I can further troubleshoot it myself. I'll dig around in the system and on the net a bit to see, but I'm probably going to buy another pointing device in order to resolve this. The trackball is only about 2 months old, but maybe it's filled up with cat hair. ... There's a joke in there somewhere.

  • Mail 2.0.5 CRASHES ON OPEN after Security Update 2005-009(Tiger Client)

I'm trying to figure out how to fix this.
I rebooted into a techtool pro e-drive and repaired permissions (as well as some other repairs to the drive, etc), but it still is crashing.
I created a new user and opened mail just fine there.
So... it is something in my account. Not sure exactly what to do next?

I'm having the same exact problem. (See Mail 2.0.5 crashes when I get new mail). I deleted my preferences & my junk mail settings, to no avail.
A remarkable number of other people are posting with similar problems, just in the past week or so alone, and as far as I can tell, no one has figured it out. There is definitely a bug here. I have a hunch that it may be related to a recent software update. I'm going to post this to the other threads in hopes of garnering some attention from Apple.
For posterity's sake, I am connecting to a Gmail account, a POP account, and a .Mac account.

  • Printing problems after installing Security Update 2015-002

After installing Security Update 2015-002 on three separate computers on two different WiFi networks, printers on the network are losing their connections to the computers that can print to them. We have experienced this on a network running a Canon printer and an HP printer - both have disappeared on the network although the printer suggests it is still connected to the network. The same thing has happened on a separate network I manage with a single HP printer on that network. I have tried removing the printers, resetting the printers etc. Nothing is working. I can get one print out of a printer when I turn the printer off and then on. Three minutes later the printer is no longer connected to the computer - although still connected to the network. Please Help.

I think I have figured out that it is in fact the Apple Extreme Base Station that is losing the printer. It is very odd because the printer is connected to the Wifi. My computer is connected to the WiFi and connecting to the internet. The Router for the internet can see the printer. An Apple Extreme is then connected via a network cable in Bridge mode to the router. When I turned the power off the The Apple Extreme and then restored power it all worked. was still working this morning, but again this afternoon I needed to reboot Apple Extreme. It is quite strange that this is happening on two different Networks in different parts of the country at the same time. Maybe the Security Update is somehow affecting/blocking communication with the printer? I just don't know enough. These networks have been up and running with the same printers and computers for years with zero problems - all of a sudden we have the same problem on both Networks.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

  • Startup problem since 5/07 security update

I've been having serious problems with startup since the last security update. Startup hangs at the first gray screen or the while screen with the Apple logo. Sometimes multiple restarts get me to the login screen. Safe mode gets me there as well, but the next time I log in the same problem occurs. I have cleaned caches, deleted extensions, deleted fonts, used several shareware programs to clean up my startup files.
Yesterday, when I booted up, a small camera appeared mid-screen with a face alternating with a question mark. The camera blinks back and forth for a long time. Once startup made it to the login screen, but I didn't want to login, since I didn't know what it was. Today I tried to login again. The camera is still there--no surprise--but this time startup is stalled at the gray screen and the fans starts up and runs with no progress.
Any ideas? My iMac has worked perfectly until I did the last security update. I am pretty careful about downloads or opening any unknown files, so I'd be surprised if I have a virus. Others in my family use the iMac, but they're pretty saavy about viruses.
I'm about to reinstall OSX, but want to see if anyone has run into this and found a way around.

  • More Security Update Problems - Finder Menu on/off constantly

I like many others here had a perfectly normal imac G5 and then performed the security update tonight, sadly since then the Finder is flashing on/off and I can't access Finder Menus, I can however open Safari and access internet.

I would be very grateful for any ideas

Thank you for your response Greg, in the blind panic that set in last night I did manage to check the Console Log to see what if anything was happening with 'Finder'. I have Emblematic installed in the Admin Account and this was repeatedly coming up in the log as Finder was starting and quitting.
    I have read loads of issues with the Security Update but thought I would do the following first;
    1. Checked the 2 other accounts on the iMac, logged in to both - no issues with Finder quitting.
    2. Did a SafeBoot and no issues with Finder until I clicked on the Emblematic icon on the System Preferences menu. The Finder menu started to start/quit as it had been doing in normal start up.
    3. Uninstalled Emblematic while in SafeBoot and re-started.
    4. Logged in to Admin account and no problems with Finder
    5. Problem appears to have resolved so I can only assume it was conflict between Finder and a third party application.
    6. Can't even recall why I had Emblematic installed anyway - have never used it!
Thanks again and a lesson learned with Auto updates.

  • 10.6.4 Security Update 2010-05 and Flash Disk Problem

New Mac and System 10.6.4-- Software update notified me of Security Update 2010-05, and I downloaded yesterday without remembering I had a flask disk in 1 of 4 USB ports, using it to organize data when the hard disk on my older IMac (3 years) crashed. Now if I try a restart with the flash disk in 2 of the 4 ports (including the one it was in or the one with the printer connection), I get a blank gray screen, and must do a cold restart. If the flash disk is in one of the other two remaining ports, no problem. If another flash disk is in any of the 4 ports, no problem. I have reinstalled the security update and reformatted the problem flash disk without any change or success

Hi chgr5, and a warm welcome to the forums!
If you don't get an answer in the Tiger/10.4 forums where we are now, you might try...
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1339
Whew, that's pretty strande, if it were Tiger/10.4 I'd suggest this, but my 10.6 iMac died...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, move these files to the Desktop.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
n Finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    Reboot & test.
